Bears Ruin Primetime for Jets

--Primetime. Monday Night Football. Throwback uniforms. 2-0. Disaster. That summed up the New York Jet's 27-7 defeat at the hands of the Chicago Bears. Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler was efficient threw the air throwing for 217 yards and two touchdowns. The Jets were able to contain halfback Matt Forte on the ground but stacking the box allowed for Brandon Marshall to gain 75 yards on four receptions to help extend the Bears' drives. Two turnovers, an interception by Geno Smith and two fumbles by the Jet's backfield summed up the difference.

Bear's Safety Ryan Mundy picks off Geno Smith.

Geno Smith kept the turnovers down but only threw one touchdown on the night, which was the only score for the Jets. Down 10-0 with 8:16 to go in the second quarter, Geno fired deep to speedster Percy Harvin. Harvin beat the corner and hauled in a 66 yard touchdown pass to bring the New York's deficit down to three. Harvin later left in the third quarter to injury. The Jets also lost tight end Jace Amaro and middle linebacker Demario Davis in the fourth quarter. Without his two standout receivers, the Jets offense stifled for the rest of the game. Smith would finish 16/28 for 214 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

The Jets defense did a remarkable job keeping the team in the hunt throughout the game. It didn't get out of hand until there was 6 minutes left. They tallied five sacks against Chicago's depleted offensive line.

Next week, another undefeated comes to MetLife as the Detroit Lions (3-0) try to take control of the NFC North.

Jets Sign Linebacker Minter; Cut Linebacker Cunningham

 photo Kevin_Minter_zps60e8f624.jpg

--The Jets today have announced the signing of inside linebacker Kevin Minter. The deal is for one year at $390K. The former LSU star was originally drafted in the second round in 2013 by the Arizona Cardinals. Being buried under quality veterans and just being a special teams player, the Cardinals decided to release him in the preseason. This signing comes at the heels of inside linebacker Demario Davis getting injured in the Week 3 loss against the Chicago Bears. Minter will wear #53.

In order to make room, the Jets released outside linebacker Jermaine Cunningham. Cunningham, a second round pick in 2010, played four years for the Jets and tallied no tackles this year.

Good job on signing a player from LSU!

Re: Out of Mediocrity: Rise of the Jets

I've been following along but I couldn't put my head on this one thing...

The Jets are mediocre? But in all seriousness good work. Was going to post a while back but never real got the time to, and then forgot...

Anyways, you deserve a round of applause for winning not one game... but two games with the Jets.

Lions Defense Stifles Jets

 photo Pic4_zps5938d38c.png

--The Detroit Lions proved today that they don’t need Calvin Johnson……..at least when playing the Jets. The Lions defense shut down Geno Smith and the New York offense, compiling three forced fumbles and four interceptions in a 27-9 win. They also scored 11 points off of an interception by cornerback Darius Slay and two safeties. New York also recorded a safety as well, and Geno Smith ran for a 9 yard touchdown in the first quarter for the only points scored by the Jets.

Detroit put on a dominant performance the entire game, shutting down both phases of the Jet’s offensive attack. With receivers Percy Harvin and Jeremy Kerley out with injury, the Jets were depending on the run to get things going. What happened was a 47 yard rushing day by halfbacks Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson and with Geno Smith rushing three times as well. Ivory was lost in the fourth quarter with a torn hamstring and is expected to end up on injured reserve.

With no running game to speak of and lack in pocket protection, the Lions recorded seven sacks on the day. Ndamukong Suh led the Lions with three while forcing and recovering a fumble. Along with the Slay interception was an interception by linebacker Stephen Tulloch.

New York was able to shut down Calvin Johnson as Megatron only compiled 24 yards on four catches. This allowed tight end Brandon Pettigrew and receiver Golden Tate to open things up. Tate, the former Seahawk, caught three passes for 82 yards. He also caught a touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford in the third quarter. Pettigrew tacked on 84 yards on seven catches. While Geno Smith was busy turning the ball over constantly, Matthew Stafford had an efficient day throwing for 263 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. The offensive line of the Lions protected well, not giving up a single sack against the blitz happy scheme of head coach Rex Ryan.

What the Jets have to be scared of is the lack of points the past two games. After tallying 66 points in the first two games of the season, the Jets have only scored 16 in the past two weeks. They will have to find an answer as they travel across the country to San Diego as they take on the Chargers (2-2) next week.
