Eastern Michigan - Miami (OH) Preview

AP Detroit -- The Eastern Michigan Eagles, champions of the MAC West, will meet the Miami Redhawks, MAC East champions at Ford Field in Detroit Michigan for the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championship. For Eastern Michigan, the matchup marks the first time in school history that the Eagles have played in the conference championship game. Their last conference title was in 1987 before the breakup of the conference into separate divisions. The Miami Redhawks are the defending conference champions after claiming the title over Northern Illinois 26-21 in the 2010 championship game.

For the Eagles, there is no secret to how their offense works. They will rely almost primarily on the legs of the senior dynamic duo of Dominique Sherrer and Corey Welch. The duo has run through opponents all season combining for 1907 yards and 25 touchdowns on the ground. The coaching staff will look to keep pressure off of freshman signal caller Mark Iannotti. Iannotti, who was supposed to spend the year on the sidelines redshirted, was thrust into the starting role ever since junior starting quarterback Alex Gillett went down for the season with a broken collarbone in week two. Iannotti is expected to redshirt next year when Gillett returns.

For the Redhawks, it all starts with redshirt junior quarterback Zac Dysert. Despite missing several games nursing a PCL sprain, the Ohio native has put together a very strong year and has the team in position to compete for another conference title. His favorite target on the season has been senior tight end Kendrick Bruton. Bruton has had a fantastic senior season hauling in 14 touchdowns.

Miami University comes into the game as heavy favorites against the upstart Eastern Michigan Eagles. Las Vegas odds have the Redhawks as fourteen point favorites. Tune into ESPN for full coverage of the MAC championship game starting at 7:30 pm est.

Re: A Rising Storm in the North | Cheese's Eastern Michigan Dynasty

Wow not bad making it to the championship in your first year. It'd be awesome if you could win it! That should definitely set you up for a decent bowl game and help tremendously with your team's prestige for recruiting purposes - as EMU I can imagine that's one of the biggest challenges haha

Year 1 (2011), Week 14, Team News

Eastern Michigan Team News: Week Fourteen

Pair from Michigan Commit on Eve of MAC Championship -- The Eastern Michigan Eagles received "hard commits" from a pair of two star players from Michigan, tight end Justin Brown (6-5, 242 lbs) and defensive tackle Chris Carey (6-0, 268 lbs). Both players had previously given soft commits to the Eagles earlier in the season. Brown took an official campus visit in week eleven and was present to watch Eastern Michigan thrash conference foe Buffalo 52-13. Carey visited in week fourteen while the team was on a bye week but took tours around both the city and the campus along with having dinner with the coaching staff. Both players were being pursued by in state rival, Central Michigan.

Recruiting Profile – Justin Brown

Scouting Report
Out of the St. Clair Shores area, Brown was a four year starter for the Lakeview Wildcats. A wide receiver his first two years of high school, Brown bulked up as an upperclassman and flourished from the tight end position his final two years. He possesses good athletic ability and is a very capable receiver. The main knock against him is his blocking ability. He lacks lower body strength and has a tough time driving defenders off the line of scrimmage and sealing the edge.

He will almost certainly redshirt his first year on campus at Eastern Michigan due to the Eagles depth at the position. If he can bulk up and work on his blocking technique, Brown has all the tools to be a starter down the road.

Recruiting Profile – Chris Carey
Chris Carey | DT
Lansing Waverly Warriors, High School Senior, Waverly, MI

Scouting Report
The Eagles add their second defensive tackle of the class in Waverly native Chris Carey. While not nearly as talented as fellow recruit Tremayne Smith, Carey should provide good depth for Eastern Michigan who is losing three tackles at the end of the season. In high school, Carey was able to compensate for a lack of speed by overpowering smaller offensive linemen off the ball. He will not be able to do that in collegiate football and could be overmatched against large guards. He could see playing time as a true freshman dependent on if the Eagles are able to bring in any more talent along the line. Being able to redshirt him would be ideal but may not be a luxury Eastern Michigan is able to afford.

Houston is 11-1 but not ranked? That's odd.

Anyway, win the MAC!
