Hopefully you can stick with the run game against Northern Illinois, that seems to have been your strength all season (or at least during that four-game winning streak). If you can get Sherrer and Welch 35+ carries, give your defense some rest, I think you can send EMU to their first MAC title game.
Unfortunately you are absolutely right. This game had "trap game" written all over it. We fell behind early in the bad weather and just couldn't get our feet back under us for the rest of the contest. Once we get pushed away from our running game, we typically do not do well at all. Iannotti will be great in the future but he is still very young right now. I do think next season we will go back to to starter Alex Gillett (currently out for the season with a broken collarbone) who will be a senior. I may choose to redshirt Iannotti and give him the season to grow. We will see.
For now, we turn our sights to NIU, who looks very very good on paper. Harnish is absolutely killing on both the ground and through the air out of their pistol offense. Sherrer and Welch will get a lot of work and I am hoping we can play some keep away offense and burn lots of clock with methodical run and grind drives. A trip to the MAC championship would be huge for us. Thanks for checking in!
Year 1 (2011), Game 12, Eastern Michigan at Northern Illinois
Eastern Michigan senior HB Dominique Sherrer took home player of the game honors running for 162 yds and two scores in the win.
MAC West Champs: Eastern Michigan Claims MAC West Title with 28-24 Win Over Huskies
Eagles claim MAC west title; head to conference championship game for first time in school history; EMU last won the MAC in 1987 | Eagles rally in fourth quarter; score go ahead touchdown in final 20 seconds of game | Sherrer and Welch combine for 234 yard and four scores.
AP DeKalb – For the first time in school history, the Eastern Michigan Eagles will be heading to the MAC championship game representing the western division of the conference. The Eagles were able to top the heavily favored Northern Illinois Huskies 28-24 in a battle for the western division title. The last time the Eagles won the Mid-American Conference was in 1987 before the conference was split into two divisions and the championship game formulated. As has been their formula all season, Eastern Michigan leaned heavily on the legs of seniors, HB Dominique Sherrer and HB Corey Welch. The dynamic duo combined for 234 yards and four scores on the evening.
Record Breaking Season: DE Brad Ohrman broke the single season school sack record (11.0) previously held by Avery Brown. Ohrman got sacks; number eleven and twelve in the win. With possibly two games left to play Ohrman can build on the record.
Eastern Michigan would score first as Sherrer lead the team to a score on the opening possession of the ball game. However, QB Chadler Harnish would quickly lead the Huskies back as they scored twice thanks to both the arm and the legs of the senior signal caller from Greencastle, Indiana. HB Jamal Womble would also add a rushing score as the Huskies took a 21-7 lead into halftime.
Eastern Michigan would score midway through the third quarter on a long run by Welch to pull within seven. The real turning point would come in the fourth quarter when Sherrer broke two tackles on an electrifying 67 yard run that cut the Husky lead to 24-21. Following another tough stand by the Eagles defense, Eastern Michigan would go a 15 play clock killing drive capped off by a Welch touchdown for the go ahead score with less than twenty seconds left in the game. Several desperation heaves by Harnish would come up empty as the Eagles claimed the 28-24 victory.
"This is what we have been working towards all season long. We knew we had the talent and the drive to be in a place to play for the conference championship all season. The work is not over and we will not be satisfied until we are hoisting that conference trophy." -- Eagles Head Coach Dan Clayton
The Eagles will have a bye week for the final week of the regular season. They will then head to Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan to face the MAC East champion Miami (OH) Redhawks (9-3). A full game preview and matchup is expected to be released in the coming days.

Welch and SHerrer for the win! 4 Tds by the backs, fantastic. Is one of the more speed or power? Or both...deadly.
That MAC championship is going to be great. Congrats again on winning the MAC West!
I am really going to miss the dynamic duo of Sherrer and Welch. These two guys are single handedly the reason we are where we are this season. Sherrer is more of a power back and run through you kind of guy while Welch is my change of pace finesse back who is also a pretty good receiver. Interestingly enough both possess pretty comparable speed (~88). Due to the MAC competition being pretty slow though, they look a lot faster than they are. When we have played stiffer competition that speed is less deadly. Either way, we are going to have a huge hole on our offense to fill this coming offseason.
Thank you! Definitely a fantastic season and just a huge accomplishment for us to even be in the championship game. Miami (OH) looks very good and definitely heavily favored but hopefully we can hang with them. Thanks for checking in and following along Matt!
