Re: Texas State Bobcats: "Texas Forever"

Texas State Routs UAB In Season Finale

WR Brandon Smith scores his first TD of the year

This game looked like one team was headed to a bowl game while the other was headed to the toilet bowl. Texas State increased their winning streak to six games after whipping UAB 48-0. The Bobcats came out playing with their head on fire and never let up.

The Bobcats started the game by dominating the Blazers on the ground game. RB Robert Lowe and RB Chris Nutall combined to rush for 351 yards by themselves. On the opening drive, the Bobcats would run the ball nine times and only pass the ball twice. Lowe capped off the drive with a four yard dive into the endzone.

The passing game was equally effective. QB Tyler Jones threw three touchdown passes in the game while only playing three quarters. Back-up QB Connor White played the fourth quarter, when he would scramble for a ten yard touchdown.

Senior WR Brandon Smith was finally able to get into the endzone after failing to do so in the first eleven games. Smith came into the season as the team's number one receiver, but he hasn't had quite the season that everyone expected.

The defense of Texas State had its best game of the year by shutting out UAB. DE Jeff Banks registered two more sacks in this game while other defenders would add two more. Fellow sophomore DE Karee Berry led the team in tackles with seven and recorded three tackles-for-loss.

Texas State have been projected by many sports outlets to play in the New Orleans Bowl in Louisiana, but they will have to await official word on their bowl game. UAB finished its worst season in program history by going winless in all of their games. It is unclear if HC Bill Clark will keep his job after the year. UAB has said they will wait until after all of the bowl games are completed to make a decision.

Conference Championship Week Matchups

C-USA: UTEP (8-4) vs. #21 Western Kentucky (11-1)

AAC: Cincinnati (8-4) vs. #23 Navy (10-2)

SEC: #14 Georgia (9-3) vs. #5 Alabama (11-1)

MWC: Nevada (7-5) vs. #10 Boise State (10-2)

PAC-12: #6 Oregon (11-1) vs. #8 USC (11-1)

ACC: #4 Florida State (11-1) vs. #7 Georgia Tech (11-1)

B1G: #11 Minnesota (10-2) vs. #2 Ohio State (11-1)

MAC: Ohio (6-6) vs. Central Michigan (8-4)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

College Football Playoff Rankings

1. TCU (12-0)
2. Alabama (11-1)
3. Ohio State (11-1)
4. Florida State (11-1)
5. Georgia Tech (11-1)
6. Oregon (11-1)
7. Arizona (11-1)
8. USC (11-1)

Overview:

TCU has secured their spot in the playoff by going undefeated in the regular season. The Horned Frogs do not have a conference championship game so they are in no risk of losing to fall out of the picture.

The other three spots are up for grabs. As of now, the committee has Alabama, Ohio State, and Florida State in the playoffs, but all of that could change depending on the outcome of the games. Georgia Tech who will play Florida State in the ACC championship is ranked fifth so the winner of that game will most likely receive a bid into the playoff.

Alabama faces Georgia in the SEC championship, and Ohio State faces Minnesota in the Big Ten championship. If both were to win, they would likely both be in the playoff.

The final three spots in the rankings go to three teams from the PAC-12. USC and Oregon face off in the championship game while Arizona who also compiled a 11-1 record will need a lot of luck to sneak in. The most likely scenario for them to get in would be both the Crimson Tide and Buckeyes lose, and even that might not be enough for them.

Wow! Your running game absolutely exploded. Very strong finish to the regular season. Should be interesting to see where you get slated in the bowl season. Who are you currently projected to face if you end up in New Orleans? Nice job man!

I appreciate it. I'm not sure how much of it was our running game or UAB's defense. It was an easy 7-8 yards every run. I think we are projected to play UTEP at the moment.

Re: Texas State Bobcats: "Texas Forever"

Sports Talk with The Beans

Welcome back to Sports Talk with The Beans. I am your host Byron "The Beans" Bowers. We have two big topics to discuss today. Texas State has received word that they will play UTEP in the New Orleans Bowl, and the College Football Playoff.

First, lets talk about the playoff committee's decision to put Alabama, who lost in the SEC Championship game, in the playoff over PAC-12 champion Oregon. Many people have speculated over the years that a two loss SEC team would be rewarded a spot over a one loss team from another conference.

Now, we have our definitive answer to show that is in fact true. Multiple sources have said there were heated discussions between the committee about putting Alabama in over Oregon, particularly between USC AD Pat Haden and ARK AD Jeff Long. Long is the playoff committee chairman. Both have declined to comment on the matter so far.

Some are calling for the committee to be disbanded. While that seems highly unlikely at the moment, those people may have a serious arguement. If the committee does dissolve, it is not known whether the playoff would continue or revert back to the BCS format.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Texas State Bobcats will be travelling to Louisiana to play in the New Orleans Bowl against the UTEP Miners. The Miners have compiled a record of 8-5 after losing in the C-USA Championship game against Western Kentucky. This game will pit two of the top mid-major Texas programs. The winner of this game would gain bragging rights, and it could really help the winner in recruiting in the state of Texas.

The Miners play a very similar style to the Bobcats in a pro style offense. HC Sean Kugler has brought a toughness to the program in his two years that it has lacked in the past. The Miners really want to control the ground game on offense with RB Aaron Jones. It will be tough sledding for Jones as he will be going up against the top rushing defense in the nation in Texas State.

UTEP may have to turn to the arm of QB Mack Leftwich. The coaching staff chose Leftwich after a four way battle for the starting job in training camp. He proved to them that was the right choice with his play this year. The Miners have also used dual-threat QB Kavicka Johnson in the Wildcat at times this year.

This should be an interesting match-up between two Texas schools. Make sure to tune in when Texas State faces off against UTEP in the New Orleans Bowl on December 21 on ESPN 2.
