Note: for some reason, the schedule table generator does not work for me. While I will use table generators for other purposes, I will be using a different format for the team schedule, based off of Wikipedia's team pages.

MONTHS OF MOMENTUM
Cougars spend offseason preparing to surprise in 2013

According to head coach James Arnold, 2013 fall camp is among the most intense he has ever seen in college football.

“These guys want to win,” proclaimed Arnold. “They want to be champions.”

They have certainly had ample time to prepare, with new offensive coordinator Roy Hahn, a former strength coach, adding hours weekly to the time players spend in the weight room. Hahn, a hulking figure, was in full form when the Houston Chronicle visited fall camp. Between various yells and screams at his players, Hahn shared some of his philosophy with us.

“The harder they practice, the easier Game One will be,” said Hahn, referring to the Cougars’ opening game against the Jaguars of Southern University, an FCS team. “I don’t want them surprised by nothing, I don’t want anyone to hit them harder than they hit each other.”

Indeed, the Cougars’ practice could easily be mistaken for a rivalry game in the SEC based upon the passions displayed.

Players were not permitted to speak to media present, but if they could, they’d likely say, “Ouch!”

The Cougars open their 2013 season August 30 at home.

HOUSTON COUGARS PRESEASON RANKING

The Houston Cougars come into the 2013 season ranked 74th in the nation according to the preseason poll, a long way from entering the prestigious Coaches Poll ranking the top 25 teams in the country.

For Cougars fans, the ranking may come as a disappointment, but certainly not a surprise after a 5–7 campaign one year ago. But for the Cougars themselves, the ranking only serves as motivation.

“I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people,” says head coach James Arnold. “We’ve been working in some new schemes and most of our guys improved a great deal in the offseason. I’ve been very impressed with what I’ve seen in fall camp.”

Also in the realm of preseason rankings, the Cougars are interestingly projected to finish a solid second in the American Athletic Conference’s West Division. The winner of that division is expected to be the Navy Midshipmen, who would then go on to face the Cincinnati Bearcats for the American conference championship.
