Who would have thought that, in Week 7 of college football, the Houston Cougars would be one of the nine remaining undefeated teams in the FBS?
At the start of the season, few believed that when the Houston Cougars (5–0) took on the Memphis Tigers (1–4), that the game would have much significance. Now, the game carries with it not only the hopes of the Cougar nation, but the hopes of nearly the entire American Conference whose membership is wishing for a team to represent them on a national level.
The Cougars enter the matchup heavily favored statistically, with the vaunted #1 offense in the country. In his pregame press conference, Houston head coach James Arnold highly praised first-year offensive coordinator Roy Hahn. “Roy earned his coaching stripes in the SEC and he took the lessons he learned there and applied them here, and the result has been sensational.”
Whereas Houston’s ability to pull away was questioned before last week’s matchup at Tulsa, Memphis’s 120th ranked pass defense is not likely to provide any trouble whatsoever. Expect the Cougars to run rampant over a hapless Tigers D. Meanwhile, with Memphis ranked below 100th in total, rushing and passing offense, expect the Cougars defense to have a field day.
Let’s face it: this one is not going to be close. It would behoove the Cougars to sub out their starters as soon as a victory becomes inevitable, likely near the end of the third quarter. That way, they can avoid injuries and allow their second and third strings to gain some playing time in the event they ever need to start.
Make no mistake about it: this one is Houston’s to lose.
