We're building something here... an NCAA 14 teambuilder dynasty

Background Info

I’ve always liked the challenge of building a mediocre team into a championship caliber contender. I’ve done a UMass dynasty, I’ve done a UAB dynasty, I’ve done a Georgia State dynasty, but they all got boring and I felt the teams were too easy to rebuild. Probably because I didn’t set any recruiting restrictions and by year 3 my team was already stacked.

I came up with the idea a while ago to create an entire team of seniors, so that when the season was over you would only have your recruits from that first season, and the rest of your roster would be walk on players. I’ve been running a dynasty offline like this for a couple seasons now and I’m really enjoying it so far.

My goal in this dynasty will be to take a brand new football program at a fake school I created, The University of Portland (Maine) Trappers from a new program to National Champions. For the purpose of this dynasty I’ll be putting my team in the place of the UAB Blazers.

Dynasty Rules

Game: NCAA 14 on PS3
Skill Level: Heisman
Coach Progression: Slow
Playbooks: Will use the head coach’s playbooks
Sliders: OS Community found here: http://www.operationsports.com/forum...t-sliders.html
Roster: JOSHC1977’s
ALL PORTLAND GAMES WILL BE PLAYED NO SIMMING

Recruiting Rules

No scouting until after the player commits to my school.

1* - Can recruit in state and pipelines up to 2*, can recruit 1* in adjacent states.

2* - Can recruit in state up to 3*, can recruit 2* in pipelines, and 1* in adjacent states.

3* - Can recruit in state and pipelines up to 3*, can recruit up to 2* in adjacent states, and 1* nationwide.

4* - Can recruit in state and pipelines up to 4*, can recruit up to 3* in adjacent states, and up to 2* nationwide. With a limit of four 4* signees.

5* - Can recruit in state and pipelines up to 5*, can recruit up to 4* in adjacent states, and up to 3* nationwide. With a limit of six 4* and one 5* signees.

6* - Can recruit in state, adjacent states, and pipelines up to 5*, and up to 4* nationwide. With a limit of ten 4* and four 5* signees.

Due to the small number of recruits in Maine, New Hampshire, and Canada (9 total eligible under recruiting rules for 1* program), I’m treating all the small states in that northern corner of the U.S. as “adjacent states” ex; New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

I’ll also allow myself New York as a pipeline state, because of head coach Johnny Shaw’s connection to the state.

Redshirting

I’ll be limiting myself to five redshirts a year. This may change at some point in the future.

Players Leaving/Transferring

I can’t stop anyone from leaving early for the draft or from transferring to another school.

I can deny transfer requests to come to my school, but only if I know for sure that player will be buried on the depth chart.

Portland History

The University of Portland (Maine) was founded in 1899, the athletic teams were named the Trappers in tribute to the all of the beaver pelts and deer hide, etc. that moved through the port throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. The school has been competing at various collegiate levels in basketball, baseball, and wrestling for men, and volleyball, basketball, and softball for women. As well as a co-ed track and field team. But they never fielded a football team. Until now.

During the 2011 football season college president Henry Welch brought up the idea of starting a football team to the board of directors. They had a campus wide student vote to gauge the interest of creating a football team, the decision was a unanimous yes.

Starting in the summer of 2012 work began on a new stadium at the same location where the track and field teams held their home meets. Seventeen thousands new seats were added to bring the total capacity to 20,000 people and a score board was erected in the north end zone. The new stadium was named Welch Field in honor of Henry Welch, who first brought up the idea of starting a football team.

The Beginnings of a Football Program

Starting in the spring of 2013, Welch began searching for a head coach to lead his fledging football program. He extended offers to many big name coaches, as well as several Division-II and Division-III head football coaches hoping to be able to lure one of them with the promise of coaching at a Division-I school. He would get a couple bites, and ultimately settle on Coach Johnny Shaw. The 42 year old Shaw is a graduate of the University at Buffalo, and was currently serving as the offensive coordinator at Alfred State, a small D-III college in the state of New York with a student body of around 3,500 people. During the introductory press conference Welch described Shaw as “a man of great integrity, with a fiery personality, and a true passion for the game of football.”

The University of Portland is a member of Conference-USA for all sports, so naturally Welch reached out them with hope that they would accept his new program with open arms. The conference committee agreed to allow the Trappers to join as a football member when they either a) win 6 games in a season, or b) for the start of the 2018 season whichever comes first. Per NCAA rules the Trappers will be ineligible to play in a bowl game in their first season (2016), if they are able to qualify.

Coach Shaw will begin recruiting players during the 2015-16 season, and the Trappers will start play at the beginning of the 2016 season. The University has awarded the football program only 15 athletic scholarships for the 2015, and first ever, recruiting class for the school. With a limited amount of scholarships to hand out it is expected that the team will hold open tryouts on campus for any student interested in walking on to the team.
