THE RECRUITING BOARD: WEEK FOUR
By David Hyde on September 20, 2013 at 7:51p

The Recruiting Board is your weekly dose of updates from the UNLV football recruiting trail, keeping tabs on the latest from commits and targets from around the country.

REBELS PICK UP BIG COMMITMENT

Brian Ross, an undersized, yet speedy Californian halfback, has committed to UNLV.

Rated at three-stars by 247Sports, Ross measures in at 5-foot-8, 170-pounds. He is the Rebels' fifth and highest rated verbal commit of the 2014 class.

Ross will be looked upon to provide depth at UNLV's stable of running backs, which already features freshman talent such as Keith Whitely and current redshirt Niko Kapeli.

As a junior in 2012, Ross rushed for 1,096 yards and 11 touchdowns at El Rancho High School (Pico Rivera, Calif).

UNLV RECEIVES TWO VERBALS

Fullback Cedrick Myric and linebacker Cameron Marshall have both announced their verbal commitments to UNLV.

Myric announced his pledge first through Twitter on Sunday following UNLV's victory over Central Michigan. The 6-foot-1, 240-pound fullback picked the Rebels over multiple potential suitors including Utah, both New Mexico and New Mexico State, and Texas State.

247Sports lists Myric as an unranked recruit, common for the underutilized fullback position. However, he is a bruising asset to place in the backfield and should fill in well for the Rebels' William Vea who is set for graduation in 2014.

Marshall concluded a quiet recruiting process after turning down interest from Hawai'i, Idaho, and UCLA to opt for the Rebels. The 6-foot-4, 224-pound recruit is slated at two-stars and the No. 1 - but only - ranked outside linebacker in Oregon, according to 247Sports.

PREVIEW: WESTERN ILLINOIS
By David Hyde on September 21, 2013 at 5:10p

If the UNLV team that showed up in the second half of its 62-27 victory over Central Michigan is the one that takes the Las Vegas Stadium field at 9 p.m. today, the Rebels should be fine against Western Illinois (2-1) .

WESTERN ILLINOIS
2-1, 0-0 MVC

9PM - SATURDAY, SEPT. 20
LAS VEGAS STADIUM
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

NO BROADCAST
“If we play like that second-half team, which we’re capable of playing a full game, I feel like we can compete with anybody,” linebacker Tim Hasson said. “That’s how I know we can play.”

The Rebels need to build on their success against the Leathernecks and get to 2-2, which would be the first time UNLV has been at least .500 since beginning the 2009 season 2-2.

Storylines:
  1. Who starts under center is one of the many questions left unanswered for UNLV. Hauck has refused to answer thus far, making it appear to be a game day decision. One thing that was noted by Hauck, however, was that both Sherry and Herring would play.
  2. UNLV has lost each of its past two matches against lower-divisional opponents.
  3. Hauck, in his fourth season, never has won back-to-back games at UNLV. If his team fails to come through tonight, Hauck will be squarely on the hot seat because this appears to be the most winnable game on the schedule.

Matchup to watch: UNLV’s defensive line vs. WIU’s offensive line

This is a matchup that should really favor the Rebels, and success up front would be key to making this an easy victory. So far the Leathernecks haven’t made any drastic mistakes but UNLV has the size up front to change that.

Players to watch: The Rebels' quarterback battle will seemingly carry into this game. Should Herring play well, he may very well be deemed the starter for the season's remainder.

Western Illinois' Anthony Fontenot, only a redshirt freshman, has the talent to be starting at multiple FBS programs. He has help in the backfield with sophomore running back Ryan Butler.

The Rebels didn’t amaze or inspire awe in tonight’s 34-10 victory against Western Illinois (2-2), but what they did do was line up at home against an inferior team and do exactly what good teams are supposed to do in that situation.

They played shut-down defense and from the start left no doubt which team would walk out of Las Vegas Stadium victorious.

“We controlled it from start to finish,” UNLV coach Bobby Hauck said, “so it’s a pretty complete win.”

BOX SCORE: UNLV vs. Western Illinois

The counter to all the good vibes surrounding the Rebels’ first winning streak since 2008 is that stretching it to three means winning on the road next week at New Mexico (1-2). The gap between back-to-back victories actually dates back longer than UNLV’s 23-game road losing streak. So before looking ahead to that challenge take some time to enjoy this one.

As expected, senior quarterback Caleb Herring got the start, picking up where he left off in last week's 62-27 demolition over Central Michigan.

Sophomore Nick Sherry performed in brief first and fourth quarter stints, finishing 4-of-9 for just 19 yards.

Immediately after Sherry's first appearance, Herring returned to the field and solidified his position by throwing the game's opening 44-yard touchdown pass to Torry McTyler. Herring finished 16-of-36 – an inflated ratio due to receiver drops – for 192 yards, two scores, and an interception.

The senior signal-caller also added another 106 yards on 12 carries.

Tim Cornett pitched in 131 yards rushing, two scores, and a team-leading seven receptions for 62 yards.

“We’ve got the weapons, that was never a question coming into this season,” Hauck said.

After being overshadowed by the explosive offense last week, the Rebel defense continued their stellar play to garner recognition. The unit limited WIU to 254 yards of offense, nine first downs, and came up with seven sacks.

“We kept everything in front of us. That was a huge priority coming into this week,” said senior linebacker Tani Maka, who had eight tackles and a sack.

After WIU's starting running back Ryan Butler left the game injured, UNLV limited his backup, Gavin Lawrence, to under a yard per carry on 10 his attempts.

Defensive backs Peni Vea and Kenneth Penny both contributed interceptions.

“These guys enjoyed it tonight,” Hauck said. “It was fun to be in that locker room.”

HOLLOWAY, REBELS' FRONT LINE PACES IMPROVED DEFENSE
By David Hyde on September 22, 2013 at 5:55p

UNLV’s defensive line struggled badly last football season and has been a liability for several years.

Expectations, however, were different this season.

It was a more experienced line which figured to make it perhaps the strongest part of the defense. Four games into the season, the line is meeting expectations.

“They’ve played well up front on defense,” coach Bobby Hauck said. “We’re a little more veteran there than we’ve been in past years.”

The Rebels, who play at New Mexico on Saturday, have allowed their last two opponents an average of 350 yards per game. Not bad considering Minnesota and Arizona gashed the defense for a combined 1139 yards through UNLV's opening weeks.

It’s a long season, however, and UNLV still faces playmaking quarterbacks such as Fresno State’s Derek Carr and San Jose State’s David Fales.

But with the promising early play by the defense, much of the credit is due to the line. Parker Holloway, at end, leads the team with four sacks and is third in the MWC with 10 tackles for loss. The line as a whole ranks nationally in the top ten with 15 total sacks.

Seven of those sacks were made last night against Western Illinois.

“Our depth has really made the difference so far,” Holloway said. “We've got a two-deep rotation that allows us to stay fresh and when we come out, we're ready to make plays.”

Definitely a great showing from our D. They did exactly what they needed to do against a lower-division opponent. Front line stopped absolutely everything.

And thanks! I feel really content with my layout on the long-term basis - one of the first time that's happened - so i really appreciate the compliment

TIM CORNETT: NEW MEXICO 'OUR STATEMENT GAME'
By Matthew Gaines on September 23, 2013 at 10:04a

It’s been nearly four years, a precise 1,430 days, since UNLV last won an away game. A trip to New Mexico (0-3) this weekend presents them a clear opportunity of ending the 23-game spell, and they are looking to take every advantage of it.

“We’re tired of carrying that monkey on our back,” running back Tim Cornett said. “Every year our season revolves around how we’ll do on the road and every season we’ve failed. It’s time to put the whole thing to rest.”

The Rebels, now 2-2, are coming off consecutive wins for the first time under head coach Bobby Hauck. Four games into the season, they have already tied their win total from last season, as well as the year beforehand.

“We’ve came out and made some noise, but it’s still early. There’s over 10 weeks left of football,” Cornett said. “But Saturday, that’s our statement game. We’ve had it circled for months. That streak has got to end there.”

True to Cornett's assessment, this is a big game for UNLV, which probably will be an underdog in the remainder of its away games. So if the Rebels are to break the skid, it most likely needs to happen this weekend.

Ironically, the Rebels’ last road victory was a 34-17 defeat over Lobos on Oct. 24, 2009. A preceding loss to a ranked TCU squad began the skid that now stands three short of a program record (26, 1994-98).
