Re: California Dreamin'

Bears Have NFL’s First Father-Son Coach-Player Duo

“I asked him not to do it, but he did it anyway,” said new Bears head coach Scott Linehan. “Him” is Chicago GM Ryan Pace and the “it” is drafting Linehan’s son, Idaho QB Matt. “Sure, it would be cool to win a Super Bowl with my son at quarterback, and I have every bit of confidence in his future, but QB’s face enough pressure without all the additional stuff that come with being the coach’s kid.” With Tyrod Taylor being on a short leash, could we ever see a Soldier Field crowd chanting “Dad-dy’s Boy! Dad-dy’s Boy!” when Matt starts and struggles? A couple of other things may be at work here: the publicity of a head coach having a son on the roster for the first time in NFL history and/or beginning the grooming of Matt as a coach if he peters out as a signal-caller. In any event, many are going to question the wisdom of Pace’s investment of Chicago’s third round pick, especially when Baker Mayfield was still on the board.

Did The Colts Draft Enough Receivers?

OK, so the severity of T.Y. Hilton’s injury, the loss of Donte Moncrief to free agency and the failure to exercise the 5th year option on Phillip Dorsett’s rookie contract all justify the Colts taking a receiver in an early round. But three consecutive picks? May that’s applying theory that if you throw enough stuff against the wall, something will stick. It also means that after taking corner Minkah Fitzpatrick with the 5th overall pick, Indy didn’t take another defensive player until Round 6.

G-Men Have Drafted 3 QB’s In The Last Two Drafts

Last year the New York Giants drafted Miami’s Brad Kaaya in the third round as a backup QB and a potential successor to Eli Manning, who is now 37. This year another third-rounder went to a signal-caller, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, and as an added bonus, the G-Men took USF’s Quinton Flowers in the 7th. With New York unlikely to carry 4 QB’s on the 53-man roster, of the youngsters is going to end up on the practice squad or released altogether. Wouldn’t it be ironic if that one ended up elsewhere and turned out to be the best of the trio?

Rams Win Exhibition Opener As Gustafson and Hogan Duel Into Overtime

The coaching staffs of the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers got extra time for in-game player evaluation and the teams’ preseason opener did not end until there were less than 2 minutes remaining in the overtime period forced by a field goal by the Niners’ Randy Bullock in the final minute of regulation. The game gave the Rams reason to believe that the backup QB position would still be in capable hands if GM Les Snead decides to act on a trade offer for playoff sensation Sean Mannion. Brafy Gustafon, with a full year in the system under his belt, threw for 242 yards and a pair of scores while completing 22 of 35 attempts without being intercepted. And with the Rams having drafted two receivers this year, returning wideouts played as if their jobs were on the line. Third year man Pharoh Cooper, who had better numbers as a rookie than he did in 2017, caught 6 passes for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns, including the game-winner. Billy Brown, who spent his rookie season on the practice squad after being signed as a UDFA out of tiny Shepherd Universty, grabbed 5 balls for 63 yards. As for the rookies, first round pick James Washington, playing on the first quarter, had 3 receptions for 32 yards, while 4th-rounder Jake Weineke had 3 for 33 and a tub. Mannion showed no signs of his postseason play being a fluke, completing 8 of 11 passes for 172 yards, including a 63 yard rainbow to Cooper. San Francisco’s Kevin Hogan, who was thrust into a starting role last season to due Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury, went 25-of-36 for 243 yards and 3 touchdowns and Mike Davis had a surprisingly strong performance, rushing for 109 yards on 16 carries, prompting Rams head coach Sean McVay to say “A lot of things on defense still need a lot of work.”

Browns Lose Allen and Kessler

Lord have mercy on the poor Cleveland Browns. Potential franchise savior Josh Allen suffered a partially torn ACL in the first series of Cleveland's preseason opener and is expect to be out of action for a minimum of 2 months. When he eventually does make his first career start, it will be without the benefit of some exhibition season preparation, and some may make the argument that the situation would merit postponing his debut until 2019. Not bad enough? Cody Kessler did not make it out of the first quarter either, suffering an elbow injury that could take a full month to heal. Now the Browns are facing sacrificing a player who would have made the 53 man roster so Horse Face Glennon can start on opening day. Factory of Pain indeed.

Chiefs Trade Parker To Bears

The Chicago Bears did not get a strong safety upgrade in free agency or the draft, but they have just gotten one via a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. KC has already seen enough of first-rounder Derwin James to be comfortable with shipping Parker out for the Bears' 6th round pick in the 2019 draft. While Parker's true value may be more than that, it was a case of both teams knowing that Parker would be released if there were no trade takers.

Re: California Dreamin'

Fighting For His Life

For many fringe players, being out of practice squad eligibility means the end of a brief NFL career. Such is the prospect facing Los Angeles Rams running back Malcolm Brown. With one more tailback on the roster than there was before the draft (7th round pick Chase Edmonds), Brown’s time in LA will end if he doesn’t make the 53 man roster. In the Rams’ second preseason game, Brown proved his intent to not go away quietly, scoring on runs of 66 and 37 yards, and those touchdowns were the difference on the scoreboard in LA’s 27-13 victory over the visiting New York Giants. Even if Edmonds, who averaged 6.8 yards per carry in rushing for 38 yards on 6 attempts, takes Brown’s roster spot, Brown has those runs to add to his video resume to present to potential new teams. In other statistical notes, Sean Mannion’s hand remained hot (11/13, 154 yards and a TD) and first round pick James Washington got more involved in the passing game, leading the ream in catches and yards. For the G-Men, the developing story is that 7th round pick Quinton Flowers currently appears to be second best QB on the roster. Eli manning is seeing limited action this preseason and did not take a snap in this game. Brad Kaaya played the first quarter and in six attempts completed three dump-offs for a mere 18 yards. Flowers, whose play kept Baker Mayfield watching from the sidelines, went 17-of-27 for 171 yards and scrambled thrice for 17 yards. First round pick and 2017 Heisman runner-up Derrius Guice didn’t see the field long enough to get his motor warmed up, carrying for just 20 yards on 6 attempts.
