NEW ORLEANS, LA - The Jets (5-8) find themselves on the road again, this time down in Louisiana to go up against the Saints (6-7). The teams traded punts the first few drives, neither team moving the ball much. Defense reigned supreme as the game was scoreless after the 1st.

Rookie standout Elijah McGuire went down early in the 2nd with a back injury and would not return. At 2:34 to go in the half the Jets became the first team to enter an opponents territory, but the drive would end with a punt. The very next drive the Saints put together a series and scored the first points of the game when Brees connected with TE Coby Fleener with eight seconds remaining. Saints lead 7-0 at the break.

The Saints would add a field goal their first drive of the second half and increase their lead to 10-0. The Jets would attempt a fake punt from midfield on their next drive, but were stuffed short. After three quarters the Jets offense was scoreless. Looking to change this the Jets drove deep into Saints territory, but the drive ended with a sack fumble of Hackenberg.

New Orleans scored on their next drive and extended their lead to 17-0 with 6:30 remaining. After having fumbled the previous drive, Hackenberg fumbled again to start the Jets drive. Trying to escape pressure Hackenberg was hit and turned the ball over again. The Saints scored yet another touchdown. The Jets’ final drive would end with a Hackenberg interception.

All the momentum New York has had the past few weeks seems to have gone away. The offense sputtered and never got going, and while the defense put together a solid day they can’t be expected to keep up this level of play week in and week out.

Matt Forte saw a limited number of snaps, recording only one carry, but it looks like he will be back to full strength next week. Good timing as McGuire left the game with an injury and is questionable for next week's game against the Chargers.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - The 5-9 Jets welcomed the 5-9 Chargers to town for their home finale. With both teams sporting their respected throwback uniforms the Chargers received the kickoff, drove to midfield, and were then forced to punt. Los Angeles’ special teams unit did an excellent job downing the ball on the 4-yard line. To negative rushes later Matt Forte was tackled in the end zone for a safety. The Chargers drive down and scored after the safety punt, putting the Jets into an early 9-0 hole.

A blocked punt late in the first would set the Chargers up in great field position, resulting in them extending their lead another three points. New York didn’t gain a first down until early in the 2nd quarter. Clearly the offensive woes of a week ago continued to plague the unit. The Jets were able to finally put a drive together late in the 2nd, highlighted by a 37 yard completion to Robby Anderson and a 27 yard run by Matt Forte. Penalties would kill the drive and the Jets settled for a 23 yard field goal, closing the gap to 12-3. The Chargers were able to put together a 2-minute drive and score with under a minute to go, taking a 19-3 lead into halftime.

Los Angeles kept their foot on the gas, scoring on their first drive of the second half. The Jets offense was shut down in the 3rd, three drives and three punts. New York put together a drive early in the 4th and Robby Anderson scored to make it a 26-11 game, following a successful two-point conversion. The Jets then forced a punt, but were unable to get another drive going. The Chargers got the ball back with 10:40 to go and put together a long, time-killing drive that ended in a touchdown with 1:14 remaining.

With the game out of reach Hackenberg and the offense, playing for pride, drove down the field but ran out of time. Los Angeles wins its sixth game of the year, topping the Jets 33-11.

FOXBOROUGH, MA - The Jets season wraps up on the road against their division rivals, the Patriots. New England jumped out to a 7-0 lead, thanks to a touchdown reception by James White. New York was able to make a field goal on their opening drive, the Patriots responded with one of their own and led 10-3 at the end of the 1st.

Following another Patriots field goal the Jets marched downfield late in the 2nd and were setup 1st-and-goal from New England’s 4 yard line. Two negative runs later the Jets were looking at 3rd down from the 6 yard line. Coming out of the 2-minute warning the Jets ran a play action and Hackenberg was sacked by Shea McClellin, forcing the Jets to settle for a field goal. The Patriots responded, as Tom Brady led an efficient 2-minute offense that scored with only 0:05 remaining, giving New England a 20-6 lead to end the first half.

The Jets came out throwing in the second half but stalled out mid-field on their first drive and second drives. Looking at another drive ending near mid-field the Jets caught a break when Malcolm Butler was called for pass interference on a 3rd and long. One play later Austin Seferian-Jenkins hauled in a touchdown pass from Hackenberg, cutting the Patriots lead down to 20-13.

New York began the 4th still down seven, but after a face masking penalty and 30 yard reception by Robby Anderson, the Jets found themselves just outside the Patriots’ redzone. Hackenberg would find Kenbrell Thompkins for an 11 yard strike. Catanzaro missed the extra point, so the Jets still trailed 20-19. The Patriots answered right back with a Gillislee touchdown. New York went three-and-out on their next drive and the Patriots were able to hold on the ball for the remaining four minutes, leaving New Jersey with a 27-19.

The Patriots finish the season at 13-3, wrapping up another AFC East title. For the Jets, they finish 5-11, an identical record as the year before. Black Monday is only a few days away and it is unclear if Todd Bowles will remain the head coach of the Jets, many feel the team exceeded expectations and perhaps Bowles has secured at least one more year in New York.

THE HEISMAN

This year's Heisman finalist were:

QB Josh Rosen, UCLA - Led his team to a 12-1 record, PAC12 Title, and spot in the college playoffs.

QB Sam Darnold, USC - Led his team to a 10-2 record, defeated Josh Rosen head-to-head 42-38/

RB Saquon Barkley, Penn St - BIG10 leader in rushing yards, 3rd in NCAA, helped guide Penn St to an 11-1 season.

OLB Arden Key, LSU - Led the NCAA in sacks and TFLs, broke Terrell Suggs' NCAA sack record with 25, helped LSU to an SEC West title and #1 total defense in the SEC.

For only the second time in history, and not since 20 years ago, a defensive player has won the Heisman! LSU's Arden Key narrowly edged out Josh Rosen for the honor. Key joins Charles Woodson as the only winners to have been primarily defensive players. Congratulations to Arden Key!

LEAGUE FIRINGS

Another Black Monday has come and gone in the NFL, let’s take a look at which coaches lost their jobs:

Coaching Carousel
TEAMCOACHRECORD
ARIBruce Arians6-10
CINMarvin Lewis2-11 (Fired WK14)
CHIJohn Fox5-11
INDChuck Pagano9-7

Pagano, the only coach with a winning record on the list, lost his job in large due to failing to make the playoffs once more. The Colts were sitting 9-5 with two weeks to go, but failed to win their final two games and the Colts deemed Pagano's services no longer needed.

Bruce Arians' Cardinals were plagued with injuries this year, most notable to star players David Johnson and Carson Palmer. His firing comes at a bit of a surprise, perhaps with the impending retirement of Larry Fitzgerald, and possible one of Carson Palmer, the Cardinals might be looking for a change from top-to-bottom.

Both Marvin Lewis and John Fox must have seen the writing on the wall, seemingly always being on the edge of firing, both put together lackluster seasons. Lewis' Bengals started off so poorly he didn't even finish the year with the team. And while Fox's Bears should some heart late in the season, three straight losing years were too much for Chicago.

Some surprising non-firings included Hue Jackson (1-15), Todd Bowles (5-11), Sean Payton (7-9), and Bill O'Brien (7-9). The Browns are in clear rebuild mode, so Jackson might have been given another pass on the season. Bowles' Jets seemingly overachieved this year, enough to give him one more season.

As for Payton and O'Brien, strong finishes seemed have saved their jobs. O'Brien's Texans won their last two, one of which was a Week 17 win over the Colts, knocking the Colts out of the playoffs. Payton put together his 4th straight 7-9 season, but it seems New Orleans is faithful that Payton can turn it around. Or maybe they're afraid if losing Brees?

PLAYOFF RECAP

WILDCARD

The biggest surprise of the first round has to be Green Bay losing to Tampa Bay. A war of the Bay's, you could say.. or not, came down to the final Green Bay drive. Aaron Rodgers, Mr. NFC OPOY, led the Packers down the field into the redzone with a chance to score the go-ahead touchdown. Instead, the Buccaneers defense held strong and denied the Packers.

DIVISIONAL

Upsets ruled the second round, as the Patriots were the only home team to win. The Bucs kept rolling, while the #2 seed Vikings got embarrassed in their new home.

RAVENS(9-7) @ PATRIOTS(13-3)

CONFERENCE

The Bills and the Patriots met for the 3rd time, this time in the AFC Championship game. And the Patriots made it a hat trick by beating Buffalo for the 3rd time this season. The NFC was decided by two young QBs, both put on great performances but it was the Eagles' Wentz who prevailed.

SUPER BOWL

What a game. The Patriots looked like they would run away with this one after a couple early Wentz interceptions. But the Eagles made it a game in the second half and almost completed the comeback. Unfortunately, the Patriots were wearing the 'lucky whites' and held off for their 6th Super Bowl victory, putting Belichick and Brady in a league of their own.

EAGLES(11-5) @ PATRIOTS(13-3)
PHI 28 - 36 NE

The 2017-18 season is in the books, many things changed from last year but the results are the same. New England will now set their sights on a three-peat, which is very, very possible.

THE OFFSEASON
2018 EDITION

Around The NFL - Offseason Recap (Part 1)

NFL.COM - Another busy offseason is in the books and the long wait until opening day is almost over. Free Agency, the Draft, Mini-camps, all in the books. Here is a comprehensive look at some of the major storylines of the 2018 NFL Offseason.

HEAD COACH CHANGES
Coaching Carousel
TEAMPREVIOUS COACHNEW COACH
ARIBruce AriansJosh McDaniels (Patriots OC)
CHIJohn FoxChuck Pagano (Colts HC)
CINMarvin LewisJohn Fox (Bears HC)
INDChuck PaganoDavid Shaw (Stanford HC)

John Fox was hired in a surprise move by the Bengals, who many thought would go sign a first-time head coach, either an NFL coordinator or a college coach. It appears Cincinnati feels Fox's leadership will guide them back to the playoffs after a disappointing 2017.

Chuck Pagano was the second fired coach to find a new home when the Chicago Bears hired him. Many Bears' fans are hoping the rebuilding is finally over.

The Colts hired Stanford Head Coach David Shaw to fill the void left by Pagano. Will the Shaw-Luck reunion spark a Colts return to the playoffs?

Josh McDaniels has gotten a second chance. The ex-Broncos HC and established Patriots OC was brought in to replace Bruce Arians as the Cardinals HC. With the retirement of Carson Palmer, McDaniels had a big whole to fill immediately in his offense, and fill it he did.

Notable Moves:
  • QB Jimmy Garoppolo traded to Cardinals
  • CB Malcolm Butler to Saints - 4yrs $66M
  • RB Thomas Rawls to Lions - 4yrs $23.4M
  • CB Brent Grimes to NE - 1yr $8.57M
  • LeGarrette Blount to Chiefs - 3yrs $22.9M
  • DE Sheldon Richardson to Lions - 4yr $30.0m
  • QB Teddy Bridgewater to Giants - 2yr $10M

The biggest moves this offseason all revolve around New England. The Patriots decided to franchise tag and trade Jimmy Garoppolo, instead of tagging Malcolm Butler. The Patriots sent Garoppolo and the 32nd pick for the 8th and 40th overall picks. Cardinals new HC Josh McDaniels needed to find a QB, and he got one he is very familiar with. As part of the trade Garoppolo agreed to a 5yr $80M extension.

Bulter, who had been offered a contract from the Saints during the previous offseason, finished what he started a year ago. After yet another 7-9 season New Orleans, and nearing the end of Brees' career, the Saints all going all out in 2018.

Here is a recap of the Jets' offseason moves.

Key Arrivals:
  • QB AJ McCarron - 4yr $37.3M
  • HB Matt Jones - 2yr $5.2M
  • TE Trey Burton - 4yr $26M
  • C Zach Fulton - 4yr $11.5M
  • ROLB Shaquil Barrett - 5yr $28M
  • CB Ladarius Gunter - 2yr $8.08M

Key Departures:
  • QB Josh McCown - Free Agency (Unsigned)
  • HB Bilal Powell - Released
  • WR Quincy Enunwa - Free Agency (CAR)
  • C Jonotthan Harrison - Free Agency (LAR)
  • TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins - Free Agency (IND)
  • K Chandler Catanzaro - Free Angecy (MIN)

The Jets went after a QB in Free Agency, signing ex-bengals QB AJ McCarron to a 4yr $37.3M deal. McCarron, who played in nine games last year, threw for 1,936 yards, completing 64% of his passes for 12 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. The Jets do hold the #6 pick in the draft, so they may still take a QB but it would appear that McCarron has been signed to be the Jets starter in 2018.

Overall the Jets had a decent draft. Although they signed AJ McCarron during the offseason, the Jets took quarterback Josh Allen with the 6th overall pick. Allen is considered one of the better QB prospects of the draft and OC Taylor Johnson said he will definitely have a chance to win the starting job, adding that "all starting spots, from the quarterback to the long snapper will be up for grabs this preseason."

All nine draft prospect have a shot to make the 53-man roster. New York didn't add much talent during Free Agency and, coming off a 5-11 season, will have plenty of positions up for grabs.
