ESPN SCOUTING - It's never too early to take a look at the upcoming NFL draft. It may only be early September but the college season is in full swing. The early favorite to go #1 overall is USC QB Sam Darnold, and with no fewer than 11 teams sitting 0-2 to start the season there are plenty of potential suitors for Darnold. Experts around the league predict it will come down to a race between the Jets and Bears for the #1 pick, but with the Bears investing in rookie last year we might see yet another blockbuster trade for the pick, if they land it.
If there is anyone who could challenge Darnold for the honor of being picked first, look no further than our #3 ranked edge rusher Arden Key out of LSU. Quality edge rushers come at a premium in the NFL, and if Key can put together a solid season he may join other recent SEC pass rushers who went first overall, Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney.
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - The Jets fell behind the Dolphins early and Miami continued to pad their lead throughout the afternoon. After giving up 187 yards and 249 yards on the ground the first two weeks, the Jets again were abused on the ground to the tune of 245 yards. Jay Ajayi alone accounted for 240 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground, adding 87 yards receiving and a touchdown reception.
If the Jets defense wasn't porous before, the losses of DT Steve McLendon and CB Morris Claiborne can't be good. Both went down with knee injuries, McLendon could possibly return in a few weeks, while Claiborne season is in jeopardy with a PCL injury.
For the offense it's no longer if Petty/Hackenburg will play in 2017, but when. Dropping to 0-3 on the season, and put together another poor showing, big changes are coming to the offensive unit. An OL shakeup is priority number 1, as a lack of pass protection and run production begins with the big guys up front. A new starting lineup is due for Week 4.
I've always loved Madden with real draft prospects.. very cool that you'll be doing that here! Especially with the team off to such a rough start.. that draft guide could be a nice preview of who you'll be taking come end of season 1.
Much like every other dynasty on the board, I'm reading along! Looking forward to seeing what happens with your edition of the Jets!
Thanks man! Adding in editing last year was a big plus for my CFM immersion. I have a strong feeling that I will be near the top, if not at the top, of the draft... but given my teams struggles on both sides of the ball, who will take might not be known till draft day haha.
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - The number that will be haunting the Jets won't be two (the deficit they lost by), nor will it be three (their plus turnover differential), no, the number that will haunt the Jets after their fourth straight loss will be nine. Nine is the number of sacks the Jets gave up to the Jaguars. Nine is the number of more sacks the Jaguars had than the Jets. Nine is the number that let down a tremendous defense effort and handed the Jets yet another loss.
In hopes for a better offensive outing, the Jets made changes along the offensive line. J. Harrison replaced W. Johnson at Center, and B. Qvale replaced B. Ijalana at Right Tackle. Early on the changes were positive as rookie HB E. McGuire, making his first start after B. Powell's benching following a Week 3 two fumble performance, opened the game with multiple big runs. The Jaguar defense would adjust and shutdown the rookie the rest of the game.
Trailing late in the 4th the Jets had a chance to tie the game after rookie Safety Marcus Maye intercepted a Blake Bortles pass for a touchdown. The Jets would fail to convert the two-point try, and the Jaguars would run out the final three minutes and leave New Jersey with the win.
What To Do?
The Jets are sitting 0-4 with yet another poor offensive performance. With such poor production over the first four games changes need to be made. Rookie receivers ArDarius Stewart and Chad Hansen have found themselves in starting roles due to injuries. TE Scott Orndoff and CB Jeremy Clark have been promoted from the practice squad to aide a depleting roster.
With so many young players the odds of the Jets turning around the season are slim. This won't discourage HC Todd Bowles, but if the Jets continue down this path the next four weeks and are sitting 0-8, the Jets will have to turn their view towards the future and no body's job, not even Bowles', will be safe.
