Re: Tearz49ers Presents: This Is Texas (NCAA Football '14)
*************
FORT WORTH, Texas -- For two quarters TCU balled out, no way in any shape or form did they look like a program who were coming into the game on a six game losing streak, a streak in which included a 35-19 pummelling at the hands of SMU and a 34-31 overtime loss to Kansas (The Longhorns next opponents). What came to be the Horned Frogs undoing in this one you ask? Well like Texas' its inability to play mistake free football, and a complete second half offensive meltdown which saw the Horned Frogs score just six points.
In total, both Texas and TCU combined for a total of seven turnovers.
The Longhorns got on the board early with a 4-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead, this quick touchdown came off the ball of the games first turnovers Texas defense end Malcolm Roach broke free off TCU's sophomore right tackle Lucas Niang and punched the ball straight out of the hands of the rushing Kenny Hill Jr. on the Horned Frogs first play of the opening drive.
You could hear the moans ringing around Amon G. Carter Stadium, but they were soon silenced by two quickfire Horned Frogs touchdowns. Sewo Olonilua took Texas safety Brandon Jones for a ride for a full five yards before ending an 18-yard scamper with a touchdown. The Horned Frogs second touchdown was set up when Michael Downing Jr. snapped down on an extremely under thrown pass from Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger, Ehlinger threw three interceptions in today's game. The Horned Frogs took just one play to take their first lead in the game when Kenny Hill Jr. found a wide open Jaelan Austin and the junior receiver walked the ball in pretty much untouched for a 23-yard touchdown reception, despite Brandon Jones effort.
The Longhorns answered with a quick strike of their own, scoring 82 seconds later on a 35-yard touchdown reception by sophomore wide receiver Collin Johnson to tie the game at 14-14.
Texas and TCU exchanged field goals in the second quarter before TCU running back Sewo Olonilua capped off a long 9-play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, and if you couldn't write a better movie script on the next play Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger fired the ball straight into the arms of TCU senior cornerback Ranthony Texada who took it 36-yards to the house to give TCU a 31-17 lead going into the final minute of the first half. It isn't the first time this season that Ehlinger has had multi interception games and his head coach Tom Herman could be seen showing the young quarterback just how he felt about the latest turnover. Texas closed out the first half with a 21-yard Josh Rowland field goal.
Whatever was said to the Longhorns at half-time worked and when Devin Duvernay took the opening kick-off 100-yards to the house (A NCAA record) you could see the life almost sucked out of the Horned Frogs defense, who up until this point had played well above their No. 119 ranking.
Two more Josh Rowland field goals would give the Longhorns a slim 33-31 lead going into the fourth quarter.
A 39-yard catch and run by Lil'Jordan Humphrey on the first Texas drive of the fourth quarter put Texas at the TCU 2, and Humphrey found himself wide open and was found by Ehlinger to almost certainly seal the win, but that came a few moments later.
Texas cornerback P.J. Locke III and senior safety Jason Hall (who had an interception already in the game) almost got in each others way to pick off Kenny Hill Jr. setting up a quick 5-yard Chris Warren touchdown to seal the win for the Longhorns, despite a late touchdown connection between Hill and Austin.
"We talked about the stupid mistakes we had made on offense," Texas head coach Tom Herman told reporters after the game. "I told them that if we continued on this path then we could kiss our playoff chances goodbye..."
When asked if he considered taking Ehlinger out of the game, Herman quickly rebuffed suggestions that he was close;
"It never crossed my mind, he is a young kid, he knows what I expect from him and today he didn't get to that level. We go again next week and I am sure, based on what I know of this kid that he will up his level when we take on Kansas."
Junior linebacker Breckyn Hager, who had 7 tackles, senior safety DeShon Elliott who pitched in with five tackles, led the Longhorn defensive effort, but it was Malcolm Roach who once again stole the show for the Longhorns defense; Roach collected three sacks and a forced fumble along with four tackles in the game, he also had four tackles for losses.
On offense, Texas were led by a steady running game. Kyle Porter who is so far keeping Chris Warren III to limited carries finished the game with 109-yards on 19 carries. The Longhorns totalled 215-yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries. Ehlinger had his worst game since taking over for the injured Shane Buechele, and looked ever like the true freshman he is. Ehlinger completed just 8-of-17 passes for 192-yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions, he was also sacked twice in the game.
The Longhorns are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 11, when the will play host to the Kansas Jayhawks at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial. The Jayhawks come into the game on the back of a three game winning streak with wins over TCU, Kansas State and Baylor.
