2001 Growing Pains: A Panthers Franchise

Hello Everyone. I am not really a fan of today's football so I decided to go a little retro after having a blast reading The_Canes Madden 2003 franchise with the Texans.

I am going to be starting back in 2001. The Ravens have just come off of their Super Bowl victory and released Trent Dilfer into free agency. Brady is still a nobody and Ricky Williams is on the Saints. I have all of the draft classes up until the present and have modded stadiums and uniforms to be correct for the time (except the Chargers).

Game: Madden 08
Roster: Madden 2002 Default Roster
Platform: PC
Difficulty: All-Madden
Draft Classes: Yes

Re: 2001 Growing Pains: A Panthers Franchise

2001 Offensive Preview

----Coming off of a disappointing 7-9 season where the Panthers lost five games by one score or less, coach George Seifert feels confident that this years iteration has what it takes to finish the job. Carolina is only five years old, but the team has not been back to the playoffs since their magical run in 1996.

Quarterback

After getting sacked a league high 69 times, quarterback Steve Beuerlein was sent packing to Denver. Seifert wanted to go with youth and mobility to run his west coast offense. It's time to see if Jeff Lewis is worth it after Seifert traded for him last year, coincidentally, from Denver. Seifert seems to like his potential. Carolina also drafted Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke out of Florida State. It is concerning that the quarterback considered experienced on the team (Lewis) has only passed for a total of 210 yards and no touchdowns in his career. Dameyune Craig will be the third string.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------Grade: D+

Runningback

The guy with the funny name is back. Tim Biakabutuka is definitely in a prove it year after battling injuries since being drafted. The Panthers not only have a fast runner but a good receiver as long as he is upright. Fullback Brad Hoover provides good run support and proved he could even pound the rock, rushing for over 100 yards last year against the Packers. Richard Hundley provides adequate depth as the backup to Biakabutuka.

Grade: C

Receivers

Definitely the strongest part of the offense. Veteran Muhsin Muhammad is coming off a good season where he hauled in 102 receptions for 1,405 yards and six touchdowns. Donald Hayes and Patrick Jeffers provide quality depth though none of them have blazing speed. Wesley Walls returns at tight end and looks to stretch the middle of the field.

Grade: B-

Offensive Line

Center and the tackles look to be fairly decent this season with the likes of Todd Steussie, Jeff Mitchell and Chris Terry. The guard positions look somewhat dismal with Jamar Nesbit and Kevin Donalley. I would expect Carolina to sign another guard before preseason, but this line looks as porous as it did last year. Expect a lot of sacks.

Grade: D
