Re: Restoring Titletown: A Packers Franchise

Packers Preview: Week Ten
By Dan Witherspoon

-------------------------
Are you ready for some football? The Eagles (3-5) come to Lambeau Field Monday night to go head to head with the Green Bay Packers (6-2) and they are desperate for any type of momentum that just might save their postseason hopes. With the Cowboys way in front of the Philadelphia in the NFC East, barring a monumental collapse, the Eagles can only hope to look for a wildcard spot. It is still possible to obtain, but they cannot suffer to lose much more.

Quarterback Randall Cunningham is going to have to
make plays with his feet and his legs for the Eagles.

Meanwhile, the Packers are on a five game winning streak and, barring a monumental collapse of their own, need to start looking at a first round bye in the postseason. With San Francisco and Dallas the only teams in front of the Packers for home field advantage right now, the Packers cannot afford to drop any games that they should win.

Coach Mike Holmgren-"Don't let their record fool you. This team is a great team lead by a great quarterback in Cunningham. They are dangerous and I've hounded the players. They are ready. We just need to go in and do our jobs. All of us."

For the Eagles to Win
On Offense
It all about quarterback Randall Cunningham. Cunningham is having a decent season so far, throwing for ten touchdowns and only throwing five picks. He can also beat you with his legs, having ran for 288 yards and a touchdown as well. He is going to have to keep limiting his turnovers and make the safe throws. He needs to expect his leading receiver Fred Barnett to draw significant coverage and check down to the tight end if he gets in trouble. Other than that, hand the ball off to halfback Ricky Watters and let Watters tire out the Green Bay defense while also keeping Favre and Company off of the field.

On Defense
The defensive pass rush needs to get after quarterback Brett Favre. Their secondary and linebacking corps do not have the talent to cover the number of weapons Favre has at the tight end and wide receiver positions. They won't be able to hold them for long, so that pass rush needs to be there on every down that Favre drops back. If not, this could get ugly quick.

For the Packers to Win
On Offense
Favre needs to ball out. Philadelphia won't pose much of a threat in pass coverage, specifically in the linebacking corps. Tight Ends Keith Jackson and Mark Chmura should be able to beat any coverage that is rolled their way. Favre needs to take his time, don't force any throws, and find his tight ends as much as he can.

On Defense
The Packers need to contain halfback Ricky Watters. Sure, Cunningham is a duel threat with his abilities but Watters is where the Eagles should have the most success. The Packers have shown vulnerability at run defense in past games, so they should expect the Eagles to attack early. Consistently having eight men in the box should stop Watters and contain Cunningham on the ground. The pass defense should be able to do enough to not get burnt deep throughout the game, allowing the offense to simply outscore the Eagles.

Packers Survive Eagles Comeback
By Dan Witherspoon

-------------------------
The running game and defense were late to the party, but they showed up when the Packers needed it most. After nearly squandering a 31-14 lead to the Eagles (3-6), the Packers (7-2) defense shut Cunningham and company out in the fourth quarter as the Packers were successfully able to run the clock out for the win.

The formula followed similar to last week at the Vikings. The Packers came out firing on all cylinders, with Brett Favre throwing a touchdown pass to receiver Terry Mickens on their first drive. After a quick interception by rookie cornerback Craig Newsome on Randall Cunningham, Favre would connect with rookie Antonio Freeman for a 12 yard touchdown pass to take an early 14-0 lead. Freeman (8 rec, 130 yards) had a monster game for the Packers after starting receiver Mark Ingram had to leave with an injury early in the first quarter.

Cunningham and company were only down temporarily, as he and halfback Ricky Watters were moving the ball at will on the Packers in the second quarter. And after Watters himself went out due to injury, rookie halfback Charlie Garner sliced and diced through the Packers defense. Cunningham would throw two touchdowns in the second quarter, one to receiver Calvin Williams and the other to tight end Ed West, to cut the score down to 21-14 with 52 seconds remaining in the half. However, as Favre has done all year, he was able to move the offense at will when it counted and the Packers were able to kick through a last second fieldgoal before the half ended to make it 24-14.

The bad news for the Eagles is that the Packers would receive the second half kickoff and Favre would capitalize, hitting Edgar Bennett on a seven yard swing pass for his fourth touchdown of the game. He would finish the game with 327 yards and a 150.0 passer rating. Charlie Garner would then score two touchdowns, one from five yards out and then another where he juked two Green Bay defensemen out and waltzed in for a 28 yarder to make it 31-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

And then things seemed to change. The Eagles started playing good defense as they shut down the Packers receivers and started getting pressure on Favre. Defensive end William Fuller (2 sacks) would put a lick on Favre which ended the Packers first possession of the quarter. The Packers secondary returned the favor, as they gave Cunningham nowhere to throw the football and forced the Eagles to punt. The Packers would go three and out on their next drive and punter Craig Hentrich would come though with a great punt that went out of bounds at the Philadelphia two yard line. The Eagles were able to move the ball to their own 34 yard line before having to punt the ball back to the Packers with 4:24 left in the game.

After converting a 3rd and 1 with 3:17 remaining, Packers LG Aaron Taylor was flagged for offensive holding which forced the Packers back to their own 35 yard line facing a 3rd and 10. It didn't matter, as Favre connected with tight end Keith Jackson, who found a hole between the linebacker and receiver for 20 yards and a first down. The Packers would then run out the clock.

Defensive Tackle Gilbert Brown-"They were able to make some plays tonight that caught us off guard in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. We were able to hunker down though and do what we needed to do when it counted. A win's a win, and we just have to keep this thing going."

The Packers will leave the confines of Lambeau next Sunday and travel down to Tampa Bay to take on the Buccaneers (3-6).

Re: Restoring Titletown: A Packers Franchise

Packers Preview: Week Eleven
By Dan Witherspoon

-------------------------
This Sunday when the Packers travel to Tampa Bay to take on the Buccaneers, it will be a tale of two teams that are going in opposite directions. The Bucs started out fast with a 3-1 record to open the first quarter of the season before dropping five straight to leave them at 3-6.

Linebacker Derrick Brooks has had a fantastic
rookie season, registering seven sacks.

Even if the Bucs fail to make the playoffs this season (which they probably will) there are some good things to take away. They have quite a linebacking corps with Hardy Nickerson in the middle and rookie stud Derrick Brooks on the outside. Brooks has been a playmaker since day one, already tallying seven sacks this season. They also have a future playmaker at defensive tackle in backup Warren Sapp. If coach Sam Wyche can shore up the offense, they should have a competitive team going into next season. Quarterback Trent Dilfer has compiled a 78.1 rating, with 1,748 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions and is still trying to catch up to speed in the NFL.

Wide receiver Alvin Harper, the big prized free agent acquisition from the Cowboys, was supposed to stretch the defense with his playmaking ability. So far, however, he is only averaging 60 yards a game while hauling in six touchdown catches.

Meanwhile, the Packers are still trailing behind the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers (8-1) by one game as they continue their run. The offense has started out hot the past two games, but have fallen flat in the second half as opposing offenses mount furious comebacks before running out of time. With teams like Dallas and San Francisco, this cannot happen and Coach Holmgren is aware of that.

Coach Holmgren-"Yea, we have had some issues of late finishing out games offensively. Fortunately for us, the defense has been bailing us out as of late. We both sides can play four quarters of football, then nobody will be able to contend with us. We just have to get the job done."

For the Packers to Win
On Offense
Brett Favre, Brett Favre, Brett Favre. With Hardy Nickerson and Derrick Brooks in the front seven, Green Bay will have trouble running the ball with Edgar Bennett and Dorsey Levens. Favre is going to need to spread that Tampa defense out to minimize blitzing. The receivers should be able to make some plays on that Tampa secondary. Tight ends Mark Chmura and Keith Jackson should receive considerably better coverage than against the Eagles.

On Defense
Get to Trent Dilfer. Dilfer is young and immobile as a quarterback. The defensive line is going to have to win their matchups and get pressure on Dilfer, forcing him to make mistakes. Dilfer is known to toss passes up for grabs if pressured, and the Green Bay secondary is good enough to contain the Bucs wideouts. Tight end Jackie Harris could have a field day against a linebacking corps that is susceptible along the seams. Expect a safety help over the top to contain him.

For the Buccaneers to Win
On Offense
They are going to need to run the ball. A lot. Quite simply, the Bucs do not have the scheme nor the talent to win in an offensive shootout with the Packers. The Bucs are going to need to run the ball to keep the possession of the football on their side, limiting Brett Favre and the offense to minimal drive attempts. Halfback Errict Rhett (626 yards, 3.1 avg, 3 TD) is going to have to perform better than he has this season.

On Defense
The pass rush is going to have to get home. The defensive line and and linebacking corps has the depth to put considerable pressure on Favre. The only question is can they can past that good offensive line. If they are successful, it could make Favre lose his patience and make mistakes.
