In a game where both teams seemed to not want to win, it was the Atlanta Falcons that snuck out of New York with an 18-13 win to improve to 4-0.
It was a sloppy contest that was controlled by big defensive plays, as both teams combined for 6 turnovers and 8 sacks.
The first turnover of the game occurred on the first play from scrimmage as Sam Darnold was intercepted by Isaiah Oliver.
The Falcons jumped out to a 10-0 lead but a fumble by Ito Smith led to a Darnold touchdown pass to Quincy Enunwa.
Julio Jones was unstoppable in this game, finishing with 171 yards on 12 receptions. He also recorded his 900th career catch in the win. However, with 7 minutes left he fumbled the ball after being hit hard by Jamal Adams. Luckily, the Jets wouldn’t capitalize as kicker Matt Coghlin’s kick would hit the goal post.
The Falcons added another field goal with just over 3 minutes left to make it 16-13. On the ensuing drive Keanu Neal forced a fumble and it was recovered by Oliver. However, with just over a minute remaining while trying to run the clock out, Smith would fumble again and it was recovered by the Jets.
With no timeouts left the Jets had one last shot to get into field goal range to tie the game. But on the first play of the drive, Deion Jones ran right through the line and sacked Darnold for a safety, increasing the Falcons lead to 5 and sealing their fourth straight win to start the year.
Running back Qadree Ollison suffered an abdominal tear and will miss the next 6 weeks. Following the game the Falcons signed Alexander Mattison off their practice squad to provide some depth.
