A-State Makes Miraculous Comeback to Upset K-State

MANHATTAN, Ks. - The Arkansas State Red Wolves would overcome a 17 point deficit in the second half to upset the Kansas State Wildcats 38-37 in the final minute. Arkansas State played one of their better games this season but still struggled a bit with turnovers. Despite the struggles, they played nearly flawlessly on both sides of the ball in the second half in order to win this game.

On the first possession of the game, Layne Hatcher rolls out of the pocket to escape pressure and is able to pick up a first down, but FUMBLES on his way down and it is recovered by Kansas State to put them in great field position. Kansas State capitalizes and scores on the ensuing drive with a 25 yard pass from Will Howard to Chabastin Taylor to make it 7-0. Arkansas State is locked into a third and long on their next drive and Hatcher throws to Jonathan Adams Jr. but it is underthrown and intercepted by Jahron McPherson. Two drives, two turnovers for Arkansas State. This one leads to a Kansas State field goal and puts them up 10-0 early. After starting 0 for 3 on the next drive, Hatcher is able to hit a pair of 17 yard passes to Adams Jr. and Dahu Green. He then finds Brandon Bowling for a 29 yard touchdown pass to bring Arkansas State back into it at 10-7. Arkansas State's defense is able to force an interception by Derrick Bean to put them at the 50 yard line. The Wolves can't take advantage as Hatcher is sacked on a third and long and they are forced to punt it back.

Kansas State drives down the field to start the second quarter and is able to hit another field goal, this one from 45 yards, to make it 13-7. A couple big runs by Hatcher allow Arkansas State to respond with a field goal of their own and make it 13-10. After trading a couple of punts, Kansas State is able to drive down the field and cap it off with a 16 yard touchdown pass from Howard to Brooks to make it 20-10. Arkansas State then fails to convert on third down as T.J. Smith makes an amazing diving bat down to force the Red Wolves to punt. A big play from Kansas State allow them to punch it in with Deuce Vaughn for a 5 yard touchdown to make it 27-10. With a minute left, Hatcher is able to lead the offense down the field including a big 4th down run and then a punch in by Hatcher to make it 27-17 before halftime.

Kansas State doesn't look to slow down as they come out of the half firing on all cylinders and Vaughn scores his second touchdown of the day, this one from 7 yards out to make it 34-17. Hatcher leads the Wolves downfield on a good drive including only their second 3rd down conversion of the game and a nice 9 yard touchdown pass to Bowling to make it 34-24. Arkansas State drives down the field but a couple big misses on throws by Hatcher and they're forced to take a field goal, but Grupe misses! It remains 34-24.

To kick off the fourth quarter, Hatcher is able to lead a perfect drive and cap it off with a 16 yard touchdown run by Hatcher to bring the Wolves within three, 34-31. Anthony Switzer then picks off Howard and returns it to the K-State 8 yard line to give the offense a huge opportunity! Hatcher throws to the corner of the endzone for Reed Tyler but it's intercepted by Lance Robinson! Arkansas State throws away the biggest chance they've had in the game. Kansas State tries to run down the clock and ends the drive with a 45 yard field goal to make it 37-31 with just under three minutes left. Hatcher would get the ball at the Arkansas State 19 yard line and have to drive the length of the field. They would struggle but some big plays including a 4th down and 3rd down conversion would put Arkansas State in position. Hatcher would get sacked on 3rd down to force a 4th and 22. After taking a timeout, Arkansas State draws up a play. Hatcher would roll right and throw down the middle of the field to Roshaaud Paul who would catch it for the first down! But Paul wouldn't be done he would keep running and stiff arm his way into the endzone to tie the game up at 37 with 40 seconds left! Grupe would hit the extra point and make it 38-37! Now the defense needs to make a stand. With 32 seconds left Kansas State would complete two passes short but fail to get into field goal range and Arkansas State would complete the comeback and win 38-37!

HUGE win for the Red Wolves, that one must have felt good! That game-winning score by Paul sounds like just straight determination, like no one on Kansas State was keeping him from the end zone. That Hatcher to Paul connection is looking really nice right now!

Yeah, I had gone into Practice before the season started to sort out the depth chart and Paul ended up being the 4th WR because he dropped a lot of passes and didn't seem to stand out to me. In season he has been incredible and with the three receivers ahead of him being seniors, he will be our #1 next year so the Hatcher to Paul connection should continue to grow and be better.

Yeah the Heisman doesn't get any more normal throughout the year, so don't expect it to. I hope it fixes itself for next year, because I know with mods and updated rosters the Heisman gets kind of screwy year 1.

Re: Bombing Run | A NCAA 14 Coaching Legacy

Arkansas State Recruiting Update

With 69 players and 22 seniors set to graduate, Arkansas State has 23 total scholarships to give out this year. A lot of the seniors graduating are backups, but they are losing a lot of receivers, and a few pieces across the offensive line. New offensive coordinator Kurtis Diaz has said that when recruiting he really wants to build a big, strong offensive line. He wants most of the lineman to be 6'5 or bigger. The only problem with that is he has a 6'0 quarterback in Layne Hatcher who may not be able to see over the line in the future. On the defensive side, the Red Wolves are losing a few big pieces as well, mainly their top two linebackers in Caleb Bonner and Justin Rice. That brings us to our first big recruit.

With only 2-star prestige, Arkansas State doesn't have a lot of options when it comes to bigger recruits. Luckily 4-star recruit, ILB Jermaine Petty (79) had Arkansas State near the top of his list. The inside linebacker is not only rated as one of the top in his state and at his position, but one of the best in the country, coming in at #64 in the SPARQ 100. Currently, Arkansas State is ahead of Georgia Tech and Florida as Petty's top target and Petty will be visiting Arkansas State in their Week 11 battle vs UL-Monroe. You can see his full profile below.

The Red Wolves are also targeting three other 4-star recruits. WR Ryan Rose (74), ATH Andre Gipson (68), and DT Jake Moore (67). Arkansas State are currently in the lead for Rose, the #18 WR out of Chalmette, LA. The 5'11 speedster also has Memphis and Louisiana Tech on his list. The 6'5, 269 Gipson also has Arkansas State way ahead on his list, with Boise State falling behind. However, he has a planned visit with Boise State week 8. Rose and Gipson are both scheduled to visit Arkansas State week 9. Moore, the #14 DT, has Northern Illinois atop of his list with Arkansas State close behind. A-State hopes to get in front when he comes to visit week 11.

Last but not least in this week's edition, Arkansas State had their first commit this week, 1-Star FB Dusty Parrish (62). The #53 FB out of Monahans, TX comes in at 6'2, 234. While he has solid blocking skills it will take some time for him to become complete at the fullback position, a position that HB Ryan Graham has been handling duties at this season.

You can see a full list of current scholarship offers below.
