Huge signing this early in the season. He seems like a true thumper in the middle of the defense.

If linebacker wasn't such a great need (four seniors leaving at the end of this season) then I really feel like Harris would make a better end. We have a couple more highly touted linebackers on the board so I will wait and see what happens as the season goes on, but the move could definitely happen still.

Oxford, Mississippi -- It took four quarters for Texas to pull away from #23 Ole Miss on what was one rather muddy afternoon this past Saturday inside a packed Vaught Hemingway Stadium.

A gutsy fourth-down call from Texas Head Coach Russell Warner in the fourth quarter saw Longhorns quarterback Tristen Holcombe take a sneak play into the endzone handing his team a ten-point lead with 59 seconds left on the clock.

"We could have kicked the field goal," Warner said after the game. "But that would have put us up by just six points, handing them the ball back with plenty of time to march down the field, score a touchdown and win the game. I had full faith in our offensive line to create the gap, and in Tristen to find it."

It was well established that the Rebels were able to move the ball on the Texas defense with relative ease today, you only have to look at the 413-yards of total offense they put up to tell you that, so the call which could have backfired was a justified one. First-year starter under center for the Rebels Kaden Martin threw for 306 yards and 3 touchdowns on the Longhorns secondary exposing where their flaws will be this season, despite an impressive interception by Longhorns freshman corner Elijah Smith.

The rain also wreaked havoc on both rushing attacks with both teams fumbling the ball. Le'Veon Moss' fumble came with the Longhorns in a scoring position.

"We've got to be better," Texas defensive captain Anthony Hill told reporters. "They exposed us out there today, made us all look like we have never played football before at times. Thankfully our offense bailed us out today."

Texas wasn't exactly "hot" on offense either. Tristen Holcombe looked every bit the true freshman he is in the first quarter, his first four passes were wayward or overthrown and that could be contributed to the fact the Rebels' pass rush was impressive early on. When he eventually settled into the game Holcombe did stand out for the Longhorns and accounted for all but one of the four Texas touchdowns today.

Holcombe finished 16-of-25 passing for 162 yards and one touchdown, he also accounted for 15 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Le'Veon Moss, despite his fumble carried the ball well for the Longhorns late on with the majority of his 96 total yards coming in the fourth quarter. Naeem Philips who was limited to just four touches in the game did find the endzone for the Longhorns, Philips is slowly becoming the go-to-guy for the Texas offense when they get down inside the RedZone.

Next week the Longhorns return home when they play host to Arkansas (0-2, 0-1). The Razorbacks were one of two teams who handed the Longhorns losses in their 2025 National Championship winning season in a 31-27. loss for the then ranked #10 Texas team.

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns secured a second priority target in as many weeks today with inside linebacker Deontay Harris making his public pledge to the Horns on Friday over the Texas A&M Aggies and the LSU Tigers.

Harris is a potential difference-maker on the defensive side of the ball and was a huge priority for Texas just like last week's signee Aaron Harris. The Longhorns are in need of high-caliber linebackers and managed to find that in the No. 2 inside linebacker in the state of Texas. His talent is highly coveted nationally, with 25 offers to choose from. He publicly trimmed the list down to seven teams but took summer visits to just four - Texas A&M, Oklahoma, LSU, and Texas - it is reported that Harris took two unofficial visits to Oklahoma also in the summer.

The 6-foot-3, 234-pound defender who is now at Cleburne High School is listed as an inside linebacker, but will likely play edge at the next level. He is ranked as the No. 134 prospect overall, the No. 4 inside linebacker, and the No. 25 ranked player from Texas, according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

At Cleburne he is a two-sport athlete, also playing Basketball for the Yellow Jackets. During his junior campaign, he won honors in both sports and registered 100 tackles, 13 for a loss, and 4 sacks, he was also on hand for 3 interceptions.

Harris is commitment No. 2 for the 2027 recruiting cycle.

Analysis (by Daniel Seahorn): On tape, Harris shows a good amount of comfort playing in space. He is also good at recognizing the offensive calls (80) and has a good pursuit after the opposing quarterbacks (90). He isn't the best when asked to cover (72 MCV, 63 ZCV, 67 PRS) and that is why we expect him to move outside and become an edge rusher with Texas.

Love the look of those rain games. Glad Holcombe overcame a tough outing and led the team to a win. For his efforts, he finds himself on the Heisman list!

Heading 2 LBs early is huge for you since, like you said, you are losing 4 at season’s end.

So do I, and with the ramped up graphics of the PC they look even better. It was a slow start for Holcombe for sure, but there is just something about this kid that I think is special, maybe it's because Klubnik lacked that scrambling ability I love in my quarterbacks but I really feel like we could have a Heisman winner on our hands with Holcombe.

I think we've been quite fortunate with the way the recruiting class has come about this season, our biggest need being LB and 3 out of the top 4 all having Texas as their No. 1 school in pre-season. Its just a shame we didn't have that season with the cornerbacks!
