Don't you play the games because you like playing baseball?

Tiger Woods on the PC had a points system whereby you could compete in tourneys and then afterwards assign your player skills points for driving, irons, putting, etc. The simple truth is a system like that bears no relationship to reality. Can a PGA pro for example suddenly hit the ball 50 yards longer just because he happened to came in 3th in the U.S. Open the week before?

Gamers today are almost psychotic about gaming realism: they want real players with real faces, real teams, real stadiums, real coaches, real assessories... So again, as I said already, why then would you want to implement a player development system that bears no relationship to reality and to how players develop? And BTW, doesn't the game already have a player development system? You make it sound like there isn't one at all.

Im really hoping they can find a way to add, or be allowed to add, salary editing. If MLB The Show cant use real player salaries then find a way to allow us to make their salaries real. I can not stand building a team based off of these ridiculous made up salaries. This is a baseball sim and money is a huge part of baseball. If 2K could have salary editing then why can MLB The Show not?

You guys make it sound like I'm saying that if a guy hits .350 for a month make him go up 10 points. I'm talking about very gradual improvements that could add up over the course of a couple years. I can't be that far off-base cuz there are some people agreeing with me.

It would be nice to be able to think "I'm doing good with this young guy so he's gonna improve" instead of being like "well I have this 20 year old with A potential, boy it would be nice if he got better". Why have it determined by blind luck instead of something the player can do / control?

Obviously nothing is perfect, no matter what system is chosen there will be people who like it and people who dis-like it. But if you want a game that has constant progression (which is what keeps people playing, sense of accomplishment) a human based way to actually have control over your teams progression or regression would definitely help this game I feel.

There is no way you will ever justify to me that whether I go 2-160 or I go 160-2, my team's progression should be 100% unaffected and completely the same no matter what the actual playing human does because that really minimizes the feeling of importance I get from playing the game.

Sounds like what you want is what EA does with all their sports games -- they fudge things on the realism side in order to make their games more fun and more appealing to the casual gaming crowd. I understand all that and I know that less simulation and realism can often mean more fun. But I'd say that's not what MLB The Show has ever been about. The Show is designed and developed for knowledgable, adult gamers and baseball fanatics. The target consumer group for the Show is probably 10-15 years older than that of EA's games. I hear what you're saying, but I'd suggest you won't see a player development system like until EA starts developing Triple Play again.

I get your point, for the record though I'm 28 years old and a retired pro-gamer from Starcraft / Starcraft 2. I traveled the country playing a video game for 10 years so I'm not really a casual gamer and I am a sports fanatic too (I played college basketball).

I'll rest my case and let the thread continue in another direction instead of beating this topic to death, just wanted some people's input to see if I was in the norm or not in feeling this way.

Either way, I won't be playing The Show if no matter what I do, my franchise is blindly run by randomization rolls of potential / age.

Just like with my Wil Myers right now. He's on a 34-game hit streak that started from a hot September in the prior season. If it used that to progress him, his starting over .400 now would feel less special because he'd get bumped up. Right now, he's a 2nd-year player on a great start and trying to keep his streak going, with still his good-but-not-great ratings. It's more of an accomplishment for me that I've kept it going with only a decent amount of growth.

I wouldn't want to see what Longoria's ratings would be under a performance/XP buy system with the season he had for me in my last season. .360 AVG, 40 HR despite missing a lot of time early, hit .440 vs LHP. The thought is a bit scary
I'm completely against a XP system where you can change it but I'm curious on how the game would work when players get hot\cold? To me, hitters go through so many streaks during the season that I would like to see it reflected on their ratings. If I hit .100 with Mike Trout for 2 years in a row, will his ratings actually go down?

In your example, Myers is on a 34 game hitting streak, what is causing that streak? Is he actually locked in and playing as a 90 overall hitter for those 34 games instead of his normal 82? Are you more focused when hitting with him because you want to keep the streak going? Maybe its been told from the devs before, but how does it handle hot/cold streaks?

If I have a 22 year old AAA who has been consistently mashing on pitchers the last 2 years, I want to see his development grow accordingly. Maybe it's changed because I haven't played much of the game lately, but it always seemed that progression was too hard coded to "Age + Potential" and not dynamic enough based on performance.

I feel like the game is going to look amazing and also play great. My main concern is presentation. I hope they get rid of the entire commentary staff and get some new guys to give this game a fresh new feeling and excitement.

There's really no XP-type system that makes any sense from a simulation perspective, for a couple of reasons. First, it's not the player on the field who is on a 34-game hitting streak, it's the User who is swinging the bat who is responsible for his player's and team's performance. Playing any sports game has a lot to do with User psychology. I for example hit much better using lefty batters, plus I can't hit left-handed pitching for the life of me, from either side of the plate. Again, it's not the player who is on that hit streak, it's me. So essentially you're rewarding players who I just happen to have a much easier time hitting with (lefty batters with high contact ratings vs lefty pitchers), while punishing all other batters on my team.

Second, why hasn't Joe Girardi spent a crapload of Intelligence and Honesty points on A-Rod, or assigned Jeter the Man Of Steel and Core 4 Save Us! traits? Because that's not how reality or simulation gaming works.

Like I said before I don't like XP system at all, but when it comes down to what is simulation I think we have differing opinions.

I want a game that is ratings driven and you want a game that is user driven.

I don't know what that means, sorry. I'm not interested in any system where the User earns and assigns XP points to increase players' abilities. So that would make me non-user driven... using your terminology.

Cool, just noticed that. My older brother had an APBA baseball board game back in the 60s and I always remember it because it had the Seattle Pilots. As a kid I thought that was such a great name for a team.

I hate an XP system and would absolutely hate if that was added. I'm not sure where this conversation is going, I think we both want realism, just have different opinions on how to get there.

Well, his streak ended at 35...right when he got the "Hot" label this season! From what I can tell, hot/cold streaks go by the player's last 10 games or so (maybe 4 or 5 starts/appearances for pitchers). I don't know what the criteria is, but I just played game 11 so after game 10, he got the hot streak label...and then went 0-for-4 LOL (granted it was mostly against Verlander)

In September last season, he was smacking the ball all over the place, and was hot for most of it.

I don't know if there's any bonus/penalty to hot or cold streaks. There might be, but it's not to the point where you can't play well or poorly still and reverse whatever streak.

I wouldn't want his ratings to change because his "true talent" hasn't really changed, but a temporary change to represent a period of being locked in or pressing/anxious/just "off", I can live with.

But - really, performance doesn't really improve players in reality, imo. Ability is part of performance, but so is a lot of other things (namely the other players both on your team and the other team and the randomness of the game of baseball). If a guy puts up a .130 BABIP over a stretch because 7 of the 10 line drives he's hit have been robbed on great plays, is he really showing any lack of hitting skills or a decline in making good contact? If those 10 line drives came on his last 20 balls in play, I'd say he's ripping the ball and getting woefully unlucky.

I wouldn't think he's losing the ability to make contact with authority.

But I still want a much more personal control of my baserunner, and hopefully they can incorporate a seamless switch between baserunners as well so we can control whichever runner we want during a play.

You can do that. You point the left thumbstick at the runner you want yo control, and then press the corresponding base you want him to go to. Ex a sac fly would be left stick, left and 'X'. To score a runner from second on a single it would left stick up and 'X'
