Re: MLB 14 The Show PS4: Road to the Show Thread

Sorry about blowing up the thread right now.

I decided to run with 2 more RTTS' since we can transfer them over to the next MLB The Show. It also gives me (some) variety with my players.

My 4th RTTS is a Defensive/Speedy 18 year old CF in the mold of Michael Bourn. His name is Xavier Mays - no relation - and he's just a hair over 6'0" and barely registers at 178 lbs on the scale, throws right and bats from both sides. He had a solid Showcase for the West region which was kicked off with a 3B that scored the leadoff hitter. In the next game he swiped 2 bags and scored once in another West win. In the final game Mays didn't get on base but he delivered solid hits and managed to make every play in CF.

In the draft he went in the 2nd round to the Baltimore Orioles. Mays signed the contract despite Jones playing ahead of him, he figured either Jones would leave in free agency before he was called up or he (Mays) would be traded in the future for a championship piece. Either way he still had to play in the Minors no matter where he went. In his first AA game Mays was the leadoff man and crushed a leadoff 3B just like he did in the Showcase, hopefully he can deliver on his expectations.

My 5th RTTS is my typical power hitting 18 year old 1B. He's known as Glenn McManus and he's a big corn-fed Midwest prospect that checked in at 6'5" 245 lbs, he absolutely crushes the ball (TBH, I added stubbs to him so that he starts off with ungodly power; 90 vs RHP and 80 vs LHP), he bats and throws left. He had an okay Showcase that ended with McManus going in the 3rd to the Cubbies. McManus didn't hesitate to go back to school for one year at JUCO because Chicago already has a "promising" young talent at 1B in Anthony Rizzo. In his 2nd Showcase, McManus did much better and played his way into the 1st round and was selected 13th by the San Francisco Giants, no hesitation to sign.

I was so enthralled with the mountain of a man that is McManus that I already finished his stint in AA. In one month in Richmond, McManus hit at a .464 clip with 22 HR, 44 RBI and 31 Runs and committed 0 errors (I field). Couple this with Brandon Belt hitting under the Mendoza Line and the Giants were given no choice. On May 6, 2014 Glenn McManus made his Major League debut for Los Gigantes. He's struggling a lot more at the MLB level which is to be expected, but he's only played in 5 games. Next he plays in his first home series in San Francisco, hopefully he hits his first HR on his road to the MLB record books.

Takahashi Matsumoto, a native of Tokyo, Japan, continues to adjust to life in the United States. After a rough initial start to the season, he's beginning to find his stroke for the Pensacola Blue Wahoo's.

        Triple-A champs!

Didn't have the greatest post-season but still ended up with the most RBIs and stolen bases so can't complain.

        Very good first season.

That and not being told when the runner on base is going to try for a steal is two things that do need to be fixed if not through a patch then in the next year. I really hate having a runner steal second and how it shifts my focus so I end up missing a nice meatball pitch to hit.

I just ignore the runner. If it's a good pitch to hit I am going to give it a ride, I don't want to pass up that meatball and end up having to connect with a pitch low and away. If I get a hit then the runner advances a lot, and if I don't he should have enough time to get back unless I just hit one a rope to a fielder.

Is it still possible to add or delete a pitch from a pitcher in RTTS? I can't seem to find it..thanks.

As expected, the power and speed combination has begun to show up too. He now has 6 doubles and 3 triples on the year. The discipline was lacking a bit as his strikeout total is now 25, good for fifth on the Fisher Cats. Also, the manual catch glove let him down a bit toward the end of the month when he committed 3 errors in 2 games, one of which should have been the final out of a game (that the Cats later ended up losing).

Also, this happened on the 30th, the last game that he played in May:

It's exactly for THOSE kinds of moments that I'm playing this RTTS in this way.

How are you getting video of the game playback from the PS4 to YouTube? I am able to capture the video and use the new PS4 editing software to make the "movie", but then my only option is to upload it to Facebook.

Here's what I wound up doing. I applied about 8,000 points and built a major-leaguer. This probably saved me from playing about 4 full seasons to build the same. I don't have that much time to game and there's no way I can play nearly 500 - 600 games to get to that level.

So I used those 8,000 stubs to as a "boost ahead 5 years" or so. Its still enjoyable because there is still plenty of room to grow and I am playing in the majors.

Although I'm bummed because I'm now on a (very) losing team whereas before my minor league team was in first place.

It doesn't bother me too much when the runner takes off, but it does make me feel compelled to swing to protect the runner. This happened yesterday and I hit a grounder right at where the 2nd baseman would have been, but he ran to cover the steal at 2nd which opened up the hole. So an easy out turned into a base hit. Interestingly the announcers commented on it nicely.

So my first RTTS for 14 is an SP - Mickey Carvajal, age 19

I did relatively well in my showcase games and emerged with a B potential rating and a "late first round" grade before the draft.

Got picked by the Royals at #18 in the First Round, so for double AA Im on the NW Arkansas Naturals.

                          Through 3 starts, I am 2-0, ERA at 0.39, 22 Ks vs 1 BB in 23.1 IP.

Im using dynamic difficulty and IM currently rated at Veteran +++ I think for pitching. Im doing really well and loving it. I just threw a complete game shutout against Tulsa in my last outing.

My pitches include a 2 seam fastball, a 12-6 curve and a vulcan change, all of which I am going to try and make really, really good pitches. Ill add a slider as my 4th and probably a cutter as my 5th. (Btw, when do you get a chance to do this? Does an option eventually just present itself?

A pitcher in Triple A threw a 147 pitch complete game against us.

                            I wasn't even mad, I was impressed.

I have primary set to SS and secondary set to --. With one guy he started shortstop for the first 10 games or so until he got hurt. When he returned he was at 3B. I was annoyed because that position sees much less action. Then the CPU seemed to rotate me between SS and 3B on different days.

I have another guy who I've played most of my games with who is set as SS and --. In about 50 games he's always played SS.

Maybe I'm just going through the ups and downs of the game, but I'm really having trouble hitting. I got called up to AAA after 4 or 5 AA games, and I was batting around .320 in AAA after maybe 40 games. Since then, I've been struggling a ton. I've tried all combinations of guess pitch and hitting type, but I can't hit with any of them. My player has about 65 on both contacts and 50 on both power ratings. When I do timing hitting, I'll sometimes time a good pitch at the right time but the PCI will be way off for some reason and I'll hit a soft grounder or pop-up. Basically, a lot of it seems like luck. When I do zone, I can't react to the pitch in time and I rely on getting pitches towards the middle (or guessing the pitch correctly). I'm pretty good at taking balls (~65% according to my profile) and swinging at strikes (~80%), but I can't move the zone quickly enough. What control setup does everyone use?
