Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

    An update on my franchise:

Currently im a week after the AS game in my second season. Record is 51-51 and im 3.5 games out of the last wild card spot. 10 behind Sea for the ALW.

    Current lineup:
    2B Altuve .265 5HR 47RBI
    C Castro .266 21 58
    1B Carter .298 22 83
    DH Singleton .244 17 55
    RF Springer .265 7 38
    CF Venable .271 11 48
    3B Dominguez .227 12 58
    LF Pressley .315 2 20
    SS Gonzalez .280 6 28
I traded Dexter Fowler and a drafted 3B prospect with good contact to the Padres for Will Venable right before I begin typing this, so I haven't played one game with him yet.

Pressley was hurt for the first 3 months but came back racking. Grossman was hurt for 3 months also, and now is back platooning with Pressley. The have solidified the LF spot. Its blocking Joc Pederson's call up and delaying his service time. Springer is underachieving but has spurts of getting hot. I think I'm going to shop him after the next season if he has not started to perform consistently. Fowler started off hot. He was somewhere near .335 the first couple months, but when I traded him he had fallen to .272, 12hr, and 51RBI. It's not bad numbers. I just think I could find better at a lot cheaper cost. And Fowler was already in my dog house. After turning down a 2mil raise to 4mil in the offseason, he won arbitration and was awarded 7.7mil. Will Venable is hitting .271, 11HR, and 48RBI while getting 2.1mil for the next 2 yrs, while adding more speed.

    Pitching rotation looks like:
    J. Cosart
    A. Cobb
    M. Appel
    B. Oberholtzer
    P. Clemens

    LRP
    Feldman
    White

    MRP
    Sipp
    Valdes
    Stoffel

    SU
    Bastardo
    Fields

    CP
    Hunter

Oberholtzer made the all star game with a 10-5 record and 1.09 WHIP. I called Appel up right after the AS game and in his first start he went 7IP, 0 runs, and 9k. Im about to play his second start now. I was not going to bring Appel up off we were not in contention going into the AS break, but we were only 4 games behind the Angles. Cobb and Cosart have a 6-7, and 5-4 record respectively. They both were hurt for a few months during the first half of the season but still not performing as they should. Oberholtzer and Clemons over achieving have saved my season so far. Hopefuly Appel can help me make the push. My bullpen sucks. They seem to always give up runs in tight games, so i might make one more trade for a reliever. Hunter is decent my but future closer is still Foltynewicz down in AAA.

Pretty much why I can't even bring myself to run a franchise. I can live with crazy trades and even poor free agent signings (like a NL team with 3 star 3B players), however it totally kills it when guys retire 34-36 years old as if scripted. Algorithms need to be reworked for this. Base it on skill level, injury history, performance...happiness, whatever. It would be nice to see a "retirement" meeter, or make it an interaction with the player...

In an extremely tight race for the playoffs, the Blue Jays battled from 15 games under .500 to miss the playoffs by only 2 games and sit only 4 games out of first place. Some of our pitchers really came through for us but Edwin Encarnacion really came through at 35 years old, putting up the second best numbers of his career and even came in a very CLOSE second place for MVP.

I expected to sign him for 3 more years but nope, retirement. Id' believe that, except for the fact that about 5 more players around 34-36 retired after putting up amazing numbers that same year. One pitcher (whom I can't remember at the moment) actually won 18 games, pitched 1.16 ERA and struck out 200+ decided to call it quits at 34. Meanwhile, Juan Pierre retires at 41 years old when he hasn't seen the major leagues in over 4 years...

I love playing this game and used to love building my own teams, but when I'm afraid to sign guys over the age of 30 years old, it really kills it for me. I would LOVE to get back into franchise again (I'm using OOTP to quell this feeling for now), but can't get past seeing this BS every year. How do those of you who play Franchise get around it?

Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

Finally finished out the regular season while also securing the best record in baseball with the LA Dodgers (96-66). It was a interesting season that saw major peaks and valleys where one month we would be well below .500 then the following month we couldn't be beaten. The pitching carried the team as Clayton Kershaw would not only win back to back Cy Young Award's but was also the NL MVP while being the only 20 game winner in baseball. Offensively Joe Pederson won NL ROY, I didn't think he would as Oscar Taveras was raking but a late season injury allowed Pederson to catch and surpass him in the voting. Heading into the playoffs the rotation is set with Clayton Kershaw, Cliff Lee, Zack Greinke, Josh Beckett and Hyun-Jin Ryu with the pen coming to life once Chris Withrow started getting his control and Paco Rodriguez continuing his masterful season. Kenley Jansen has been a bit shaky at times (8 blown saves) but was rock solid in September so hopefully that's a sign of things to come once the postseason rolls around. On to the stats, standings and awards....

STANDINGS - The end of the season was crazy. There was a 3 way tie for the second wild card spot between San Diego, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. I have no idea how it was decided but first Milwaukee played Cincinnati and Milwaukee won the game 5-3 then Milwaukee played San Diego the following day and won 2-1 thus giving them the second wild card spot.

Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

I didn't feel as though I had a shot to compete with the Astros in year 2 so I decided to sim to the end of the year and try to build my team for next year. I didn't see any FA's worth pursuing so I stuck with my team which is pretty young but improving.

            Opening day lineup:
            1. CF Delino De Shields
            2. SS Carlos Correa
            3. RF George Springer
            4. 1B Jon Singleton
            5. 3B Matt Dominguez
            6. DH Domingo Santana
            7. C Oliver Villafuerte (#3 pick in a draft for me and he's 22 76 OVR...great bat)
            8. LF Bubba Starling
            9. 2B Marwin Gonzalez

            Rotation
            1. Jared Cosart
            2. Mike Foltynewicz
            3. Olberholtzer
            4. Mark Appel
            5. Vincent Velasquez

Bullpen is ok with Shae Simmons as my closer.

Overall I think I have a shot to make a playoff run. I need somebody to step up and be a good DH. Santana gets the first attempt but I am not too confident in his ability. I have a couple bats in the farm system that I can call up if needed.

            Game 1 of 2016, year 3:
            Astros def Twins 3-2
Cosart throws 6 solid innings of 2-run ball and the unlikely hero Delino De Shields hits his first MLB HR in the 7th inning to put the Stros up 3-2. Bullpen slams the door. Springer also hit a HR in the game and scored twice.

Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

Just started the 2015 season with my cardinals. In 2014 we ended up winning the Wild Card Game, only to lose in the next series to the Diamonbacks 3 games to 1. Didn't make any major signings in the off season, signing Jed Lowrie and Emilio Bonifacio to 2 year deals for both of them. I let Jay, Descalso, and Ellis all walk.

My 2015 Lineup and Pitching Rotation:

              LINEUP:

              Carpenter 3B
              Taveras RF
              Holliday LF
              Craig 1B
              Molina C
              Bourjous CF
              Peralta SS
              Wong 2B

              BENCH:
              Jed Lowrie SS
              Ed Easley C
              Stephen Piscotty RF
              Emilio Bonifacio CF
              Matt Adams 1B

              PITCHING ROTATION:

              Wainwright
              Wacha
              Miller
              Lynn
              Garcia

              BULLPEN:
              Kelly LRP
              Gonzalez LRP
              Santos MRP
              Siegrest MRP
              Manness MRP
              Martinez SU
              Rosenthal Cl

              Notable Prospect:

Javier Baez is currently in Triple-A.

In spring training I traded for him:

              Alexander Reyes 90 POT SP
              Alejandro Quintana 94 POT C
              Alan Cortes 89 POT LF

We are 10-5 and lead the AL Central by 2.5. But half of our team is playing terrible. We cant get consistent hitting to save our lives. Pitching has been great at least.

We lead the majors in shutouts with 3, 4th in ERA, 3rd in hits allowed, 3rd in runs allowed, and 3rd in HR allowed. And that's with Jeremy Guthrie, Bruce Chen and Danny Duffy all having an ERA over 5. Duffy has been complete garbage with an ERA of 10.45. Allowing 12 runs in 10.1 innings. Chen has been almost as bad with an ERA of 7.43 allowing 11 runs in 13.1. And Guthrie somehow has 3 wins with an ERA of 5.06. Allowing 12 runs in 21.1 innings. Yordano Ventura went his first 2 games without giving up a run. He has an ERA of 1.23 through 22 innings with 24 K's. James Shields has yet to get a win despite 3 quality starts with an ERA of 1.35 with 25 K's in 20 innings. In the pen, Louis Coleman, Aaron Crow, Tim Collins and Kelvin Herrera have combined for 18.2 innings pitched, 8 hits allowed, 4 walks allowed, 14 K's and no earned runs. Luke Hochevar has been just as good with 9.1 innings pitched, 10 K's and an ERA of 0.96.

As for hitting. For every 1 player that is doing good. 3 more are terrible. In 9 games Norichika Aoki leads the team with a .355 AVG. with 7 RBI. Jarrod Dyson has been starting vs RHP so he hasn't gotten as many at bats. As for Dyson he is 2nd on the team with a .311 AVG with an OBP of .436 and 5 SB. Alex Gordon leads the team with 12 RBI and Mike Moustakas leads the team with 3 HR. Lorenzo Cain has been dog ****. 6 hits in 46 at bats for a .130 AVG. He is now benched in Favor of a Gordon, Dyson Aoki outfield. Just as bad has been Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler. Both hitting under .175 with a combined 10 RBI. Salvador Perez and Omar Infante are both hitting .196. Perez did just go 4-6 though so hopefully he can get things together.

Everything considered we are in 1st place. And that is all that matters.

Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

I've been doing a Royals franchise and so far I'm 43-34 in my first season and holding onto 1st place in the AL Central. Alex Gordon is leading the All-Star balloting in LF with a .323 average and 15 HRs. He's absolutely dominating and he's far and away my best hitter thus far in the season. I had him leading off up until a week or so ago in game, but I've had to move him down to 3rd because Hosmer has been in an incredible slump the last 1-2 months with his average dipping down to around .265. I also lost Sal Perez and Dyson for an extended period of time to DL stints. Sal having torn his groin (ouch) and Dyson did something to his foot. Both were out for 2-3 months. Trust me when I say this: Platooning Francisco Pena and Brett Hayes at catcher has been a nightmare.

I've been using dynamic difficulty and it's been great for hitting, however I think I've hit the limit of it working on pitching. I've been sitting at Legend pitching difficulty for awhile now and predictably it's been difficult, but it's starting to become very frustrating recently. I'm having trouble striking out guys, the CPU fouls off 10 pitches an AB and my relievers are getting shelled due to some sort of comeback AI I've been seeing.... most likely due to it being on Legend.

Tonight I'm going to adjust the sliders back to HoF to get myself a more realistic feel. I'm doing surprisingly well on Legend, but it's just frustrating when you make a perfect pitch just off the outside corner and the CPU just spits on it on an 0-2 count....then they proceed to work the count for 8-10 pitches.

Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

Currently at the June draft for my Marlins.

The team has fallen to fourth place in the NL East, behind the 1st place METS (yeah, the Mets).

The Marlins are at 27-33, 10 1/2 games out. The Mets lead with a 37-22 record. Nats in second at 33-25.

Offense is still the issue. The Marlins so far are looking at another 3-runs-per-game sort of season, scoring 202 in their 60 games (3.3 R/G).

Stanton continues to struggle for any rhythm. He leads the team in home runs...with 11. He's batting just .216 as his slow first half continues.

He has plenty of company. Garrett Jones has returned from his injury...only to fall into a slump. He's down to .185 with just 7 extra base hits. Saltalamacchia has a .291 OBP, and, perhaps in the "enough said" department, Stanton is the only regular over .700 OPS.

Greg Dobbs has seen more time and has actually kept hitting. He's at a .312 average with an .859 OPS. Rookie CF Jake Marisnick is holding his own with a slightly expanded role, batting .273, but with little power.

Pitching has kept things from being completely dismal. Team ERA is at 3.73 and has allowed 4.18 R/9. Doesn't look impressive, but it's mostly due to a couple suckers on the staff.

Jose Fernandez looks unstoppable again this year, sporting a 1.79 ERA and a 7-1 mark. Rookie Andrew Heaney is looking sharp. He's 4-2 with a 2.35 ERA in 53 innings. Eovaldi's record looks horrible (1-7), but he has a 3.39 ERA. Hand (3-7, 4.87) and Alvarez (2-5, 6.13) don't inspire confidence and are likely to be replaced in the rotation.

The lack of leads is putting a damper on the fine season Steve Cishek is having. He's posting a 2.35 ERA in 23 innings. He's gone 12-for-14 in save opportunities.

Marmol has slowed down some, which is troubling as he's been the go-to arm in the bullpen. His ERA is up 3.86, though he's still racking up the K's. He has 47 in only 37 1/3 innings of work. Carter Capps has stayed strong so far, checking in with a 3-0, 2.41 line so far.

On the farm, SP Tyler Kolek continues to look impressive. He has an even 3.00 ERA for the Suns and is picking up the kind of strikeouts you expect from a pure power arm. The Zephyrs SP Angel Sanchez and Jared Rogers are both looking like they want a shot at the majors. However, the first shot will go to Anthony Desclafani as he's shown good development and has the most MLB-ready stuff. Sanchez and/or Rogers would likely be next, either to replace Desclafani or someone else.

                        Draft Results:

The Marlins had a productive draft, though the bottom half is filled with "if-and-maybe" type prospects.

1st round: SP Damian Boeve. This kid has the makings of being a power arm. He features a strong four-seam fastball, a nasty splitter and cutter, and a developing slider. His movement is already projecting out as plus-plus. He'll need to learn to harness it and continue building strength in his arm, but he's got all the signs you want in a prospect.

2nd round: LF Matt Baldwin. Matt gained the Marlins attention with his speed initially. He's a plus base stealer already with similar raw speed. His defense projects to be average - probably not a Gold Glove winner, but he'll do the job, aided by his speed. At the plate, he's a work in progress. Power shows flashes, but his swing is too inconsistent and he falls into bad habits when he's in a slump. Still, a solid outfield prospect.

3rd round: SP Jeff Bolton. This kid right here is your classic finesse lefty. Alternates a two-seamer and a sinker along with a 3/4 curve and a circle changes that sometimes acts like a mini-screwball. Control and command is the name of his game and none of his pitches are straight, which is good because he'll probably top out at 88 MPH, at best. Questions abound as to this kid's ability to fool hitters with his stuff, but, for now, no reason to think he can't figure it out.

4th round: 2B Malcolm Franco. Not the most flashy kid ever and doesn't project to big things, but he could be an average major league player in the future. At the plate, he's got a decent swing that should make contact with major league pitching. Won't have much power, but will have enough to reach the gaps on occasion. Defense might be his ticket to the bigs, though. Already borderline to a plus defender, he'll probably improve from here to be a force in the field.

5th round: SP Quinn Williams. This kid is hard to figure out. His problems are readily apparent - his pitches flatten out too much. Combine that with him having just three right now, and it's clear to see why he'll fall into ruts and get pounded more than you want to see. However, you also see him work low in the zone, his stuff has a downward plane when it does move, preventing from serving up home runs with his hits, he locates well, and somehow changes speeds and location enough to get strikeouts. All will hinge on if he can figure out how to get consistent movement and keep from falling apart when things go against him.

6th round: RP Jude Sherman. Relievers are always hard to project, and Jude is no exception. If it's possible for a pitcher to have too much movement, Jude succeeds. His sinker and slider just have such natural movement that he can't figure out how to start his pitches so they end up where he wants. That's his problem in a nutshell. Every other issue he has stems from that. He's 18, so you don't want to pan him completely, but...don't get your hopes up.

7th round: RP Marlon Hamby. Similar to Jude in every respect, though Marlon is a little more developed with his location and overall stuff. One big red flag has been his collegiate history of meltdowns, both on and off the field. That had a lot of scouts, myself included, questioning his maturity of character. That could make him a distraction, even a cancer, in the clubhouse and he'll lack the tenacity and will to thrive in pressure situations - not good in any player, but especially in a reliever as that's how the good ones prove their worth, succeeding under fire.

The Astros travel to Arizona to face the Diamondbacks in this inter league matchup between two top teams in their respective league. The Astros, fresh off a dramatic late-game comeback against the Angels, may need a blessing from the baseball gods once again.

I suggest using TNKs sliders. But changing the Hitting difficulty to Legend (believe that what i have it on could be HoF) pitching to HoF.

Finally had a big offensive game in my Astros franchise...

                              Year 1 - simmed
Year 2 - played half the season and simmed the rest after out of contention
                              Year 3 - Current 7-4 (started 4-0, lost 4, won 3)

My offense was struggling big time to start the first 10 games. I was hitting under .200 as a team and my controller was in danger of being shattered on the ground. Hitting in this game can be extremely frustrating to say the least.

                              Game #11 @ the Angels

16 runs on 20 hits! Amazingly I hit 10 doubles and 2 HR's (both Dominguez). My team BA is now .221 but at least I have some confidence at the plate and can hopefully get it to a respectable level. It felt amazing to absolutely hammer the Angels in that game after my struggles. Dominguez went 4-6 with 2 HR, 1 2B, 4 RBI and leads the team with a .351 avg 4 HR 11 RBI in 11 games.

People might remember my Bubba Starling trade of last season...well here are his stats through 11 games:

                              ABs - 39
                              Hits - 2 (1 2B!)
RBI - 4 (had 3 in that 16 run game)
                              Bavg - .051
                              OBP - .075 (1 BB vs 17 K's)

I don't know if there could possibly be a worse start to a season lol

When Show first game out on PS4, I posted on franchise progress topic on how I was off to the best start in show history for me. I was going to post lineup card, stats sheet etc but got too lazy. It takes a bit of time to do that, and it impresses me the people here that go into so much detail about their franchise.

So now Aug 6th 2014 playing every game. My Dbacks are sitting at 65-48 and the Dodgers are 65-49 0.5 behind Padres at 58-54 6.5 GB.

Not a bad record but starting to feel effects of long season. I started with almost 9 game lead in NL West now down to 0.5. Not an easy division to play in. I traded Daniel Hudson for De Aza from Whitesox, but other then trade in the minors that is it. I did not have alot to work with being the Dbacks.
