The Jays can't seem to get hot. They win a couple and loose a couple. Sitting at 56-52 on the year, they just received a split against Kansas City in 4 very hard fought competitive games. They sit 1 game back of a wild card sport. However, that spot sees 3 teams tied for for it (Astros, Mariners, Tigers)
They are currently in a 1-1 tie with the Twins. After loosing a late heartbreaker 3-2 in game one they came back with a vengeance winning game two 7-4.
The team signed Michael Bourne to a 1 year deal before the Kansas series. The Jays were looking for speed off of the bench and he was released from the Braves after going .234 with 2 steals before getting injured. Ryan Rua was sent to AAA in a corresponding move as he is only hitting .198 in limited bench action.
Bourne played game 4 of the Kansas series going 1-3 with a home run and a sacrifice bunt. He also stated game 1 of the Twins series, but broke his forearm sliding to 2nd on a SB attempt, which ended that experiment.
The Jays were forced to recall Josh Hamilton from AAA to fill his spot. He has played 6 games at 1B for AAA hitting .212 with 1 homer and no errors. The Jays have their power bats requiring rests after a long patch with no breaks so his bat will be needed short term. In his first game back he went 1-4 with 2 outs being warning track fly outs. He also replaced Encarnacion at 1b for the final 3 innings and looked decent.
The Jays may keep Hamilton up if he produces and roll with him, Almonte, Susac, and Goins off of the bench. If he struggles he will likely head back to AAA. One named linked to the Jays is Evan Gattis. He is buried on that Astros roster and hasn't played much going .234 with 5 HR in limited action this year. His LHB would be a nice compliment to Vogelbach at 1b and has the ability to play LF and C. The Astros were inquiring about SP Miguel Gonzalez. He is currently in AAA with a 2-1/3.58 line. He did well in the big leagues for Toronto in limited action going 1-2 with a 3.89 ERA before the team acquired Andrew Cashner. It was told they offered Gattis and a low level prospect for Gonzalez. The team is reportedly looking to see how Hamilton fares in the next couple of weeks before looking at any potential additions.
Will the Jays finally break out and get back into a wild card spot?? Stay Tuned!
