After an inside pitch from Jason Hammel one of the commentators says: "Please Hammel don't hurt em!" From MC Hammer's album "Hammer don't hurt em". Dating myself big-time but I remember that albums release.

Re: MLB 16 the Show: The Little Things Thread

        Hit Speed.

I didn't think too much of it when I first saw it as kind of a cool little addition to the swing info display, but it goes much deeper than that. With the introduction of Statcast last year to MLB, we actually have another way to compare a batter's power directly with his real life counterpart than just raw HR distance.

        Take a look at this:

Coverage includes audio and video clips, interviews, statistics, schedules and exclusive stories.

As you can see, Stanton owned this category with his hardest shots being 119-120 mph off the bat. This is 100% recreatable in The Show on default sliders, provided you have the right pitch (obviously something hanging works best) and the right timing (it's a slightly pulled swing, not straight on - those generate more power). But you'll notice a clear difference in the hit speed if you try to do this with, say, Billy Hamilton. The potential hit speed is definitely scaled off of a batter's power rating, and it behaves like it's supposed to.

As usual, B Ma has done his homework.

There are two other quirks about this system that I've noticed. One is that the batting power slider will noticeably influence hit speed readings. As an example, I can duplicate Kris Bryant's 111 mph hit speed that he had on his 495 ft blast off the Wrigley scoreboard last year (though I can't match the distance without a Wrigley tailwind), but I can't go much higher. If I max the power slider, suddenly his (seemingly) max hit speed shoots up into Giancarlo 120+ mph territory (though I think it caps somewhere around there, because I can't make Stanton hit 140+ mph or anything insane like that).

The other thing I noticed is about the frequency of these massive shots. It's certainly possible to hit a player's max hit speed on a normal swing - it's just really difficult. Odds are, you'll catch it slightly off the sweet spot, and while you still might hit the ball hard, the hit speed might drop 10-20 mph. So, what's the way to have a better chance of getting the max hit speed? Yep....this is actually going to influence more Power swings out of me in hitter's counts. I tend to think of it as a liability and an almost guaranteed swing and miss (especially on HOF), but this is actual proof of that swing having a positive effect. So, I might give it a shot once in a while if I'm sitting with a 3-0 count and a good hitter at the dish. It's not just about HR's either, after all - those few extra mph generated could be the difference between a line out and a gap double.

Most of my testing on this came out of batting practice mode, with the Bat Control scenario on for guaranteed strikes. I just ignored where it was telling me to hit it and focused on trying to pull, especially the middle and inside pitches as far as I possibly could. Try it for yourself and figure out what your favorite team's players max hit speeds are (remember, they'll be different for lefty and righty pitchers because of different power ratings!). Then, once you're in a game, you'll know if you really hit that ball as well as you possibly could have!

Are there foul tips straight back to the screen behind home plate? If so, do the people in the first few rows flinch?

I haven't noticed this, but it could be my presentation mode that cuts it out if it does happen.

Re: MLB 16 the Show: The Little Things Thread

I have finally got some serious time in with the game tonight and here are the things I have seen. I am only playing RTTS right now.
              Good
Hitting! I can pull the ball! I don't have to be a push hitter any more! I have all ready hit as many homers in 35 games as I had before the all star break! Going to be turning up the difficulty!
I can recognize pitches way easier this year!
The commentary is better, they mention cool stuff.
I feel like what I input actually matters on where I hit the ball! (last year was frustrating in that it seemed like no matter what I did it didn't feel right)
The way you see the hits off the bat is awesome! Feels more real than ever! Reminds me of when I used to play.
More control over my baserunner! It is great! A lot less waiting for some drawn out animation! Changing directions shouldn't be immediate, but, it shouldn't take as long as it has in the past.
No more lollipop throws from the catcher to first when I change my mind on a bad jump stealing!
More control over my fielder as well! Same as above really. (If only I could see the ball right away!)

              Bad
I stopped fielding because I can't see the bat off the ball at SS. Not sure what the issue is, but, I was missing balls left and right. I didn't have that at all in 15. (Figured this out, the grass in 15 had more color to it making the ball "stick out" more. 16 is more like years before 15 and my old eyes can't see the ball on less colorful grass right away....)
Throw from infielder's seem to be taking sharp dives and dying out just before 1B way too often. My SS has 95 arm, unless something has changed and I am doing it wrong now! Pretty sure I didn't have a 95 arm in real life and my throws never dove off like that...pretty sure the first basemen wouldn't appreciate those crazy sinkers coming at him either!
I have noticed some crazy frame rate issues on some ground outs to the SS. (Me batting)

I can all ready see that I am going to play this version of the show a lot more than last years. It just feels better and more responsive when hitting. They made some great changes there! Not sure about the fielding, I had trouble in other years, last year was the best for seeing the ball of the bat for me.
Sorry for writing a book! Pretty excited about The Show right now!

Playing my Red Sox franchise and have a game vs the Rays. David Price vs Chris Archer and on the opening intro, they mention the pitcher matchup by saying "Price vs Archer, former teammates, Student vs Mentor." Thought that was pretty neat

Unfortunately, i think I noticed ALL of the little things this series had to offer several years ago. The game feels so similar to previous editions.

Pitching a rain game in my RttS and noticed that the batters will wipe the rain off their bat and glasses (if wearing them) during the at bat

That opening behind-the-back shot when you start your first RttS AA game. I don't recall seeing that in earlier versions, either way it got me hyped to start my career.

I've noticed anytime I close the roof at Minute Maid or Safeco, it's always sunny out even if I put in the rain or overcast.

Laced a double down the line in right field that rolled into the corner to boot, (opposite field double with a RH hitter) and it was very very close. They went to the replay to show the chalk come up off the grass...yep they got the call right.

                              It was awesome.
