Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

I finished my first series earlier today and we opened up at home against the divisional rival LA Dodgers. It seems that all the teams in my division drafted strong, I did notice that it seems some teams focused more on pitching early and others more on position players.

We absolutely dominated in the first two games. There was two great pitching matchups. Kershaw vs deGrom and Martinez vs Cole. Kershaw took a no hitter into the 7th after a batter had reached in the 6th on an error to break up the perfect game. He ended up giving up 3 hits without walking a batter and finishing the complete game shutout for the opening day victory 6-0. Gallo, Story and Schoop homered. Game two was more great pitching and Long ball action from the Padres. Martinez went 8 strong, surrendering 2 runs, while striking out 11 and not walking a batter to pick up the easy 9-2 victory. Rookie Nomar(NOMAHHHHH) Mazara hit his first career HR, but Chris Davis stole the show. After hitting a single in his first AB, he went yard in his next 3 ABs. This is the first time that I have had a player hit 3 HR in a game since I bumped the difficulty up to HOF. This is why I chose the most powerful LH hitter with my third pick in the draft after choosing the most powerful RH hitter with my second pick in the draft(Stanton). Hopefully these two will be battling for the HR title by years end.

Game 3 the bats went quiet. It was a pitchers duel between Lackey and Odirizzi. Scoreless into the 8th and they pick up the first run of the game on a squeeze play. 1-0 Bottom 9th and I get runners on the corners with 1 out and Stanton comes up. All I keep saying in my head is don't swing at a low pitch, don't swing at a low pitch. What do I do? Swing at a ball down out of the zone and hit a tailor-made double play ball to SS. The get the force at second and then launch the ball into the stands. Run scores and we go into the 10th tied 1-1. After Andrew Miller pitched a scoreless top half of the 10th, they brought in LH reliever Tyler Lyons to pitch the bottom half. First pitch, to the first batter LH Joey Gallo and he hung a slider right over the plate and Gallo crushed it right down the line just inside the foul pole for a walk off HR to complete the sweep.

So we completed the sweep and dominated out scoring them 17-3 in the process. With my strong pitching staff and our ability to hit the long ball this team is going to be a lot of fun to play with. It's gonna be the games where we don't go yard that will be interesting with the lack of explosive speed to help play small ball and manufacture runs.

      Boston Claims Veteran Jered Weaver

The Sox had thought about making a trade offer to Weaver, but decided to hold off and plan to use Reyes as 5th starter.

Well, the Angels put Weaver on waivers as they did not want him on the active roster out of Spring Training. The Red Sox saw him on the wire and put in a claim. That claim went through and the crafty 34-year-old joins the rotation.

Weaver becomes the new fifth starter and the team optioned Alex Reyes back to Pawtucket where he'll join Urias and Fulmer in the rotation there.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the team put IF Sean Jamieson on waivers.

        Trade Deadline

In a move signifying a "win-now" mentality, the Reds (67-37) struck a deal with the Marlins (52-52 5.5GB). The Reds acquired Luke Hochevar in exchange for Shea Simmons & Ross Stripling.

Hochevar has been having a fine year for Miami, pitching to a 2.51 era and averaging just over 1 strikeout per inning. The hope is that Hochevar will shorten games in conjunction with Andrew Miller, Hunter Strickland & Greg Holland.

Simmons & Stripling both have upside, but were blocked at the major league level. Miami fans will be pleased that both players come with club control past this year, unlike Hochevar.

        *
Phenom Michael Fulmer goes up against Matt Harvey in the series finale against the Padres. Fulmer will look to continue his dominance as he goes up against the Dark Knight.

Harper Wins 2016 HR Derby 23-10 over JD Martinez!

Harper belted more HR's in 3 rounds then anyone as well as launching a 490 foot bomb!

All-Star weekend is upon us in "The Matheny Manifesto" and the HR derby was a blast. Bryce Harper destroyed his competition in each round. He made quick work of Giancarlo Stanton (who leads the MLB with 30 HR's at the break) crushing him 21-9. He started the round hitting 5 straight including a mammoth 490 shot. He then faced Josh Donaldson and again disposed of another victim 17-10. JD Martinez then made it to the finals in dramatic fashion winning each of is 2 rounds by just one HR vs Manny Machado and Nolan Arenado. (14-13) and 17-16 respectively.

Bryce then crushed him in a runaway 23-10.

The Red Birds have 4 players in the mid season classic with Bryce, Starling Marte and pitchers Danny Salazar and Dellin Betantes.

A full All-Star game update and mid season report is forth coming.

Enjoy your 4th of July fantasy owners!

Are there specific players that give you guys fits?

My pitching nemesis is Steven Wright, followed closely by Chris Heston. J.D. Martinez absolutely kills me (and the computer) it's gotten to the point I walk him almost EVERY time he comes to the plate a la Barry Bonds.

Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

For pitchers, Jared Cosart continues to give me problems. Still don't know what it is - ball coming of his hand, can't pick up his delivery...no idea.

Wright used to bother me, but the O's have him in my franchise, so I see him more than a few times and I think that's helped me. Also helps to have Dickey so I see more knuckleballs when he pitches. Even though I don't hit against them, I can see the timing and get used to how it moves.

For hitters - pretty much any fast guy with decent contact/vision. Kiermeier, Burns, Blanco, etc. These guys if you make too good a pitch, it seems the AI knows how to hit it for a swinging bunt that turns into a hit. But then if you make too bad a pitch, he'll lashed it for at least a double. And if at Fenway, they seem to aim for Pesky's Pole.

Edit: Darren O'Day! Can't stand his delivery. Every chance I get, I try to get him just so I don't have to face him.

As far as pitchers go, RA Dickey has been my nemesis for YEARS. Hate facing him. In my other franchise(Cubs) I played the Reds at Wrigley and in Cincy and both times I faced Descalafini(sp?) and he pitched 2 CG 2-hit SHO vs a potent Cubs lineup. Couldn't get to him for some reason.

A random player that has stood out to me the last few years in Jonathan Lucroy. That guy has has like 3-5 hit games against me prob a dozen times the last few years and he goes yard vs me fairly often given his average power.

In the older version of the game Jose Molina on the Rays used to kill me and he wasn't even a strong offensive catcher. The guy would hit like 3 home runs in a series vs me it was crazy.

I've noticed the best thing to do against Wright (or I guess any knuckleballer) is RUN RUN RUN. I guess knuckle ball and hit and run to try and get it going. Still frustrating. & idk what it is about Chris Heston he pitches like he's CY Young whenever I face him!

That and nail everything else he throws.

He'll either have to just throw knuckleballs and you can start to time them, or he'll throw the other stuff with less "confidence", which tends to play to the hitter's advantage.

And run up pitch counts. Not only do you see more pitches so your eyes get more chances to see the pitch and adjust to it, even knuckleballers can throw only so many pitches.

Not trying to tell anyone how to run there franchise.....

                      BUT

If you have an outfield issue in the near term or are looking for a cheap young of, I HIGHLY recommend gettin CF Boog Powell.
*hes got a VERY smooth swing, and has decent speed (low 70's) reminds me a lot of Brett Gardner the swing type. He's a Cf/LF for good reason. Arm is weak initially, and has low power. Even with the low power I'd say he's capable of 15-20 hrs due to that swing being so sweet.

It's far too early to really be worrying about this, but that's never stopped Bostonians from worrying about their team.

One source of angst is (again) Jeurys Familia. He nearly gave up a 3-run lead for the second time in seven games. The two runs he gave up won't be charged to him in ERA as both Stephen Piscotty and Joey Gallo made terrible errors that gave the Rays basically five outs in the 9th.

"Sometimes you have to keep his head calm and get him refocused. It might seem like high maintenance, but isn't that my job as pitching coach, " Mark Redmond commented.

While Redmond might have a point, the closer is usually one you want to have a relatively steady presence on the mound. Being emotional and fired up is one thing, but you don't want someone who panics, loses focus or is flustered easily.

And while it's just been 4 2/3 innings for him, so very very small sample, he's given up 5 runs in that span. The ERA isn't disasterous because three have been unearned. That argues that the defense has been a problem, but he also didn't pick up his teammates and keep the opposition from taking advantage.

Familia is probably "safe", however, as there's not really much the Red Sox can do to make any change, or even threaten at one. Most the team could do is move some arms around. Herrera would be the most likely candidate as he has the best stuff outside of Chapman (who is not moving). If you believe sabermetrics, he pitched better than his 4 ERA indicated.

"That would be a move that made sense if they were making a change. I still don't see it happening unless the wheels really come off for Familia. He's more streaky than you might want in a closer, but it's not gotten that bad, yet, " One analyst commented.

                          Sano Injured By Beanball
Rays Bean Sano After Second Home Run

The Yankees are the penultimate rival for the Red Sox. Bad blood spanning decades and fierce battles throughout baseball history.

The Rays might be moving up to Archrival status after what went down in the Sox 5-1 win last night.

Sano had hit his second home run of the game that put the Sox ahead 4-1 at the time. Abad, now pitching, faced Sano for his 4th AB. The first pitch was a fastball that nearly got Sano in the head. Fortunately, he got his shoulder up in time and it glanced high off his shoulder.

In the heat and adrenaline of the moment, Sano didn't realize he had suffered an injury, unrelated to where he got hit. At the time, he was contemplating charging the mound (with the bat still in his hand!) as he slowly wandered down the first base line. He pointed the bat at Abad and had some choice words before finally tossing the bat down in disgust.

Meanwhile, it turns out he pulled his hamstring on the desperate attempt to hit the deck on the beanball. He's expected to need a couple to three weeks to fully recover, so all told it could have been far worse. Instead, a brief stint on the DL is all that will be needed.

Chapman, who's been quick to defend his teammates in situations like this, said after the game, "They [The Rays] better hope I don't pitch tomorrow. They better hope Fin [Brandon Finnegan] shuts them out or they hit us so hard I won't get brought in, but it if it's that bad, I might ask to come in just to stand up for Migs [Miguel Sano]. And if I don't, I'm telling someone who's going in to throw one up and in tight just for me."

Sox will finish the series with the Rays today and will be looking for the sweep.

                          No Winker...He's Hurt Too

Replacing Sano will not be Jesse Winker. He broke his foot in an early season game at Pawtucket and will be out 2-3 months. Instead, Alex Guerrero will get the call. He'll play LF vs LHP. Mark Trumbo will slide into LF vs RHP in addition to his DH duties.

The Padres finished up April with a record of 16-8, winning 6 of the last 7 games. They are currently in 1st place in the NL West and have the 2nd best record in baseball behind the Chicago Cubs. As a team we have the following numbers so far: .244 Avg.(22nd), 100 runs(14th), 44 HR(1), 2.05 ERA(1).

                            Team Leaders:
                            Avg: Mazara .325, Story .310, Gomez .291
                            HR: Davis/Gomez 8, Story/Schoop 6
                            RBI: Davis 18, Story 14, Gomez 13
                            Runs: Gomez/Mazara 14, Davis/Story 13
                            SB: Gomez 8, Ichiro 6, Story 2
                            Wins: Kershaw 4, Martinez/Finnegan 3
                            IP: Kershaw 41.0, Lackey 36.0, Martinez 34.1
                            K: Martinez 39, Kershaw 36, Lackey 23
                            ERA: Kershaw 1.10, Martinez 1.31, Finnegan 2.03
                            Holds: Rodney 3, Miller 2
                            Saves: Betances 9/9

So far we've been relying a lot on the long ball and world class pitching to win games. Team batting AVG and OB % are way too low, but since we have put the ball in the seats more than any other team and have had tremendous pitching, including leading the major league in shutouts(5), we have been winning lots of games this far. Starting pitching has been tremendous and the back end of the bullpen: Rodney, Miller and Betances have been lights out. Each of the big three relievers allowed only 1 run a piece in April and are striking batters out at a furious pace. I'm very happy with the decision to make Betances the closer as he has not disappointed.

After a tremendous start, Chris Davis has cooled off a lot and his AVG. is down to .230 and his HR pace has slowed. Stanton had a terrible month, he did hit 2 HR in the last 3 games though to finish the month with 4. Contreras has been fine behind the plate, but his offense has been non-existent for the first month. We'll be expecting better production from those players here in May. Gomez, Story, Mazara, Schoop and some clutch hits by Joey Gallo have been carrying the offense for a majority of the month.

Cant wait to see what May has in store for the Padres!

                              Hey y'all.

As my Reds franchise keeps trucking along, I have started to get the ball rolling on creating a full roster of 90's-2005 players that will be uploaded into the vault once complete.

I started by taking a 2001 roster, with I think 25-30 guys on each team. Since then I've been scouring the player vault / roster vault (96 & 98) and will be exporting players than dumping them into the master file. I am hoping to have 40-50 players in each team if feasible, than upload generic ml from the normal roster to balance it out. I will be doing some editing to players ages and stats (generally dropping them down a little). Once completed I will upload it into the vault if anyone is interested in using it for a fantasy draft.

Almost 3/4 done importing the 95-05ish guys. Got a few I'm gonna have to creat it seems. Such as Grady Siezmore, Michael Bourn, Hunter Pence, David Wright, Jose Reyes, Erik Bedard. If there are ANY players you guys would like to see added in from that time period please let me know asap.

At the moment, there are probably 200-300 in here, so I may already have them in the roster. Pretty excited to get this finished.

As I said, I poached a lot of this roster from the vaults...but it has been time consuming. I will be dropping the age/skills of some of the imported players so there will be opportunities for a Rick ankiel top prospect in the minors, while you can start a veteran Mark McLemore type.

                                Thanks
