    Twelve In A Row

The Reds have stretched their win streak to 12 games. The last two games were 9-0 & 3-0 complete game shut outs by the #4 & #5 starters Brandon McCarthy & Logan Verrett. The streak began back in April, after losing 3 out of 4 (three in a row) to the division rival Cubs. Strausburg takes the mound in game 3 of this 4 game series against Madison Bungarner.

      Call Off the Dogs, Already
      Sox Romp 15-3

Hopefully, the Red Sox dogs won't be tired after this one. They certainly did a lot of barking, driving the Padres pitching staff mad in the process.

Joey Gallo started it. He opened the flood gates with a 3-run double off the left-center field portion of the Monster. That sort of woke up the bats and the parade continued to the tune of 6 runs in the second inning.

Between the 3rd and 7th, the Sox scored just twice as Tommy Milone restored order. The Padres pecked a few runs across against Maeda in the meantime and it was an 9-3 score after five innings.

Maeda settled back down to keep the Padres from having hope. Then the Sox struck for six more in the bottom of the 8th. With the score 11-3, Matty V implored the Sox to "call off the dogs, already". The Sox did...4 runs later.

Hopefully, they didn't get a series' worth of runs in one go.

        Three more good ones kb!!!

I've got some time off of work...so I'll be binging a bit...really liking these reds. Winning streak continues...hopping to break the record of wins, not gonna jinx it though. Gonna keep playing til my eyes bleed and/or I have to return to work. Looking at an ASG update if I can wait that long.

          Padres Play Prevent...And Lose
Sano Bloops Walk-Off Single in 10 innings

No 15-run explosion in this one. In fact, Cliff Lee had the Sox offense neutered through five innings. They scored a run in the first...and for a while that was it.

Taijuan Walker struggled a bit and had to labor through the early innings just to keep the Sox in it. He was able to do it, showing good fortitude for a young pitcher. No panic, and eventually, his stuff came around. Still, though, The Sox were down 3-1 halfway through the game.

Chris Carter turned that around. He hit a sky high fly ball over the Monster in a classic "only in Fenway" home run. That gave the Sox a 4-3 lead.

That lead would hold up until the 7th. The Padres got a man to third went Bednar tripled with one out. Former teammate Kolten Wong was at the plate. Walker threw a tough curve low and away, but Wong rolled it over to second base to bring in the tying run.

The bullpens both were strong. Henderson threw 2 shutout innings and then Garcia a scoreless 9th. Meanwhile Robles and Chapman matched zeroes and the game went to extras. Sox had a chance in the 9th. Mateo beat out a drag bunt with two out. Mallex Smith pinch hit for Ichiro. Mateo attempted to steal second, but was called out on a bang-bang play to end the 9th. The boos rained down as the Padres trotted off the field.

Herrera pitched a flawless 10th. The Sox got Mallex Smith, pinch hitting for Ichiro, on with a single. Smith also tried to steal and made it successfully. Trumbo, however, struck out looking. Smith took off for third but Carter bounced out to the pitcher.

Sano came up to the plate and the Padres played deep, expecting Sano to hit one out there, even on a fly out. Well, Sano got a poor hit off...and that paid off. The blooper dropped in front of Span, despite his charging hard and Smith was already past the plate when it dropped. Red Sox would win and take a 2-0 lead.

Yoan Moncada Get's The Phone Call He Has Been Waiting For His Whole Life

Yoan Moncada, The Cardinals second best prospect in the system (Jacob Herzberg SS/CF is their top one and already on the big club) has been called up and expects to stay with the Red Birds for the remainder of the season. He made his MLB debut vs the Pirates last night starting at second base in a 6-3 win going 0-4. He will be platooning with veteran starter Brock Holt moving forward vs lefties. Jacob Herzberg in the meantime will continue to be a Johnny on the spot SS/OF off the bench and PR as he has flourished in that role all season long. 39 year old OF Reed Johnson was designated for assignment with Moncada's call up. Yoan had been hitting .256 with 4 HR's and 34 RBI's. GM Michael Sword felt it was time to give him the call and be with the 1st place Red Birds. Brock Holt has been solid all season long at 2B but has made 8 errors through 81 games. Holt has also been getting fatigued more as the season has worn on and he is needed in other area's as a OF and 3B fill in from time to time to give others day's off. The Red Birds are going into maintenance mode and looking to get on a routine rotation of giving guys like Lindor, Franco, Marte and Harper some days off as those players have had limited time off and in the case of Lindor he has battled a couple of injuries. Harper finally had his first day off in the series finale vs the Brewers, but ended up delivering a PH walk off single to win it!

The Cardinals have extended their NL Central lead to 3.5 games as they took game 1/3 vs their division rivals in The Pirates. Yordano Ventura picked up his 10th win and now 2 Red Bird starters sit at 10-3 in Ventura and Salazar. Dee Gordon went yard though in the first inning as the Pirates raced to a 3-0 lead. But Harper, Greg Bird and Franco drove in a combined 4 runs en route to a 6-3 win. Betantes earned his 26th save and bounced back after serving up a 3R HR to former Cardinals Catcher Alex Avilia as the Brewers shocked the Cards in extra's in their series finale to win that one 6-3 and break the Cardinals 5 game winning streak. Kevin Quakenbush was saddled with the loss though, as he exited the game with 1st and second occupied. Quakenbush has been a huge disappointment thus far. He actually was pitching really well in this one but with two outs he issued a single and a walk. He is very much in danger of being sent down if he can't get it together after the All-Star break.

Betances was brought in to face Avila (who was traded earlier in the season as part of the 3 player package that netted Catcher Salvador Perez) with 2 outs and 2 on. It was a shocking HR and Avila reached down in the strike zone and lifted a bomb to RC for the walk off win in the 10th inning. All 3 games in that series were decided with walk offs in extra innings!! Marte and Harper walked it off for two Cardinals wins. Then Avila got a little revenge against his former team in shocking fashion. Betances came in with a sub .65 ERA!

Game 2 vs the Bucko's is tonight. After this 3 game set the Cardinals head out on the road to beautiful Miller park for another 3 game set vs The Brewers. Then we will be at the All-Star break. As promised a detailed update will be forth coming!

I must say I am having so much fun with this franchise I am heavily considering doing the same with Madden 17 this year and doing a single team fantasy draft CFM. I just feel so invested when I hand select my own team like this. Really loving this Cards chise and I have played every inning of every game. Just awesome.

              Carter's Redemption?
Sox Go Up 3-0 After Carter Tees Off

Chris Carter has been suffering since July. His power bat has been making powerful breezes for the fans instead of power long balls, and he's just been a scape goat the whole time.

If the Sox score, it was in spite of Carter. If the Sox don't, it's because of Carter.

Even in this game, Carter was wearing it. He made a stupid error, struck out with the bases loaded...a continuation of a poor postseason and poor second half.

He got a chance to redeem himself in the 7th. With the game in doubt still at 4-1, Carter delivered a 3-run home run on the first pitch he saw from Machi, the reliever brought in to face him. The Padres seemed to WANT to pitch to Carter. They bypassed Gallo despite having the lefty-on-lefty match up that Gallo still is trying to master. No, they pitch around Gallo, bring Carter up with 2 on and bring in a RH reliever.

              That backfired.

Later, Carter would start a back-to-back-to-back HR parade.

"This felt good, " Carter spoke, all smiles for once, "I might have burnt too many bridges around here, but this feels good for me. I can still hit in this league."

The Sox are on the verge of another World Championship. Predictions of the offense going off have been largely true. Sox will need one more win to complete the campaign with total victory.

                  Fister Flawless
No Sweep as Padres Show Fight

Doug Fister was the victim in that 15-run explosion in Game 1. Well, he got revenge here, completely shutting down the Boston bats.

The Sox were held to 5 hits on the day as they could not figure out how to get good wood on Fister's offerings all night long. They could hardly get the ball off the ground at all.

It wasn't for lack of good approach at the plate. While the team did strike out seven times, they worked four walks and forced 113 pitches out of Fister in just 8 innings. But it never came around this time.

Sale was inconsistent again. He was holding the game close at 2-0, but then he gave up a 2-run bomb to Swihart that really put the dagger in. With the way the BoSox bats were swinging...2 runs down was bad enough.

Sox will try to regroup behind Kenta Maeda as they look to come home to Boston...not for game six but for a ticker tape parade.

Yeah, they got there with smoke and mirrors I guess. Every series they won went the distance.

Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

Howdy guys and gals! We just finished up our second series of the year in Denver and I'm here to give a little recap of the weekend's events. Make sure to check out my dynasty blog as well: http://www.operationsports.com/forum...franchise.html

                    Game 4

After these three games, I've realized just how much I hate Coors Field. The outfield is huge and guarantees extra base hits and little pop flys can get out for a home run. Having a stadium a mile high is just a recipe for disaster. This game was one of those.

We jumped out to an early 6-0 lead off the back of four doubles and a 2 run home run by Nick Castellanos, yet we still figured out how to blow the game. In Coors Field, no lead is safe. Kevin Gausman struggled in his first start of the year as he had trouble commanding his fastball. When you don't have fastball command in Coors, you're going to have a bad day. So the Rockies came back and scored 9 unanswered runs. Yup, 9. Gausman was pulled early, so we went to Chad Qualls who struggled (and left with a minor injury), and David Hernandez struggled as well. The deathblow? A Darwin Barney pinch-hit three run home run. Jeez.... Nothing was working and we had to take our licks.

Jurickson Profar hit a pinch-hit two run home run in 9th to make it a one run game, but it was already too late. When you score 8 runs, you should win every time, yet that wasn't the case today.

Also, Jake Thompson, the highly touted former-Philadelphia prospect, made his first career start, but it really wasn't one to write home about.

                    Game 5

Fresh off the disappointing loss the day before, it was good to see the team respond like they did. Once again, we started quick with Jurickson Profar, and Bryce Harper hitting back-to-back home runs to start the game and then scored three more capped by a Jon Lester (yes, actually Jon Lester!) RBI 2B. Harper's home run was the 100th of his career.

Speaking of Lester, since we had an off-day on the Thursday before the series started, we decided to move Archie Bradley back to start on Monday so Lester and Teheran could start on normal rest. Lester ran himself into trouble a few times, but escaped only a savvy veteran like himself could get out of. After Lester left, we gave the ball to Brett Cecil and Jeremy Jeffress and they came in and slammed the door.

Kyle Skipworth recorded his first Major League hit and Michael Conforto gave us an injury scare when he had to leave the game in the 5th inning after getting hit by a pitch in the elbow. He's day-to-day.

OH! And Ryan Zimmerman recorded hit first two hits of the year to raise his average to .095

                    Game 6

David Price shut us down. That's really all I can say. He was masterful all game. He could of gone the distance, but he took a grounder off the knee and had to leave the game. Not only that, the two runs that were attributed to him were a product of the bullpen stinking. Hmm, seems like a familiar theme for both teams.

Julio Teheran pitched better than the line indicates. He gave up three runs in the bottom of the first, and then carved up the Rockies for the next four until he ran back into trouble in the 6th. Personally, I think it was just a product of Coors Field. While their bats came to actually play in Coors Field, ours were cooled by the cold Rocky Mountain air (punctuated by Jake Marisick going 0-4 4Ks) and we left with another series loss in our back pocket. Onto Philadelphia!

                    Random Thoughts

                    * I am still concerned about our lineup being too left-handed heavy. Price, Skaggs, Keuchel, Matt Moore, and Chris Sale are all in our division and make me wonder if we need to go out and get a right-handed bat.

                    * We need Archie Bradley top pitch well in Philadelphia to right the ship. If he can get a win, we should be favored to win the series with Homer Bailey and Jon Lester also pitching in this 4 game series.

                    * The Minor League season started! I'm excited to see the progress of some of our top prospects this year and I hope they'll find their way onto the big league roster soon. A lot of our top guys are younger and starting the year in Class A, so we have to be patient.

                    * The Minnesota Twins started the year off 0-5. Their fans didn't have much to root for. Well, that was until Sunday when former Marlin Jose Fernandez twirled his first career No-Hitter against the Kansas City Royals. He struck out 10 Royals while walking two. It may be the first of many by the Young Phenom.

Kenta Maeda was savior, then fell into a prolonged rut that last much of the second half. He looked more average than great.

However, once the playoffs started, he was back to being a savior. The bats eventually worked, but Maeda was throwing zeroes, waiting for that to happen.

Sano got the first big hit, a 3-run home run that turned a 1-0 score into a 4-0 score.

Maeda stayed strong until the 7th when he gave up a couple runs. The score then was 5-2 and still not a certainty.

In the 8th, Mateo led the inning off with a triple...and it looked like he would get stranded there. Buxton struck out. Ichiro got an infield single, but with the infield in, Mateo could not try to score, even with his speed. Trumbo popped up. That brought up Russell. He was 0-for-4 with 3 strikeouts, but that turned into a 1-for-5 as he shot a double into the left-center field gap. Mateo waltzed home and Ichiro's 42-year-old legs kept running and he scored.

That would do it. Boston won 7-2 with Chapman, fittingly, taking the inning-and-change, something he's done all year long.

The rest is best summed up in pictures.

A joyous mob scene as the Sox celebrate their victory.

Ichiro's reaction to the final out. Perhaps this is the perfect
ending to his amazing career? Or will the allure of a title defense draw him
                      in for one more year?

                          Thanks

I'm curious how the offseason will go, too.

I'll get that going soon, probably later tonight when I advance to winter.

A heads up teaser on the Reds....Stephen Strausburg is pitching lights out - at this point only 1 loss on the season and a whip fluctuating around .85-1.05. Dansby Swanson (who was picked in the 22nd rd) is leading the national league early in the Rookie of the Year voting. Sitting in the 8 hole, Swanson has leveled off since his ridiculous avg of the first few weeks of the season, and has his batting avg hovering in the .295-.305 range. Batting in front of the pitcher, Swanson has gotten his fair share of IBB, and has shown discipline at the plate to draw walks on his own.

                              *Reds Future Outlook*
1B prospect A.J. Reed is not busting down the doors, and Justin Morneau is still hitting close to .300 against righties.

The scouting department has received word from ownership and GM Smith that a priority during the draft will be a 3B/1B that has above average contact, to the point of being capeable of either starting at 3B next season (in the event of Justin Turner bolting via free agency) or atleast filling Chris Johnsons role of 3B/1B backup-pinch hitter-spell A.J. Reed.

The local media has been reporting that in his first season as GM, Joe Smith has made it clear to the owner / franchise of his intentions. With the ridiculous start out of the gate, Smith knows a high draft pick is not likely in years to come. With that in mind, players such as Justin Turner, Jose Bautista & Justin Morneua are not projected to return next year.

Turner & Bautista are both pending free agents, and Turner at the very least is expected to garner a Qualifiying Offer. Morneau is a different story.... With 3 years left on his deal, and A.J. Reed in AAA there have been rumblings that Morneau may be a perfect candidate to be traded prior to the deadline. No sure fire return has been speculated on.

Chris Tillman has been pitching like a true #2, but the cost conscious Reds are slightly hesitant to hold on to him for nothing more than a comp pick. Brandon McCarthy has been serviceable as the #4 starter, but also comes with a hefty price tag and a dicey health history. Both pitchers are said to be available for the right price, or maybe even packaged with Morneau to a contender (in the AL preferably). The performance of top prospects Michael Fulmer, Sean Newcomb & Brady Rodgers - as well as Ross Stripling - look to allow the Reds the opportunity to deal from a position of strength to improve the organization.

Another possibility is dealing the surprisingly lights out RP John Axford with Morneau for a prospect, and pushing Michael Fulmer into the Pen and easing him into the Majors - while giving the Reds a 3rd innings eater on a team that features the injury prone Strausburg/McCarthy & effective but unproven Logan Verrett.

**Full update to come during AS Break**

*feed back from you guys regarding the availability & preferred method of movement of Tillman/McCarthy/Axford/Morneau will be welcomed. No trades will be made until after the AS break on our end.

                                Boston Offseason Hot Stove

The champs have been crowned and the playing season is over. The 2016 baseball year is still alive as the offseason is about to begin.

For the Red Sox, not all is rosy despite being the kings of the hill. The team was still just a 91-win team that was maddeningly inconsistent all year long, and the team has a few decisions to make, though overall, they might be in stable shape...for now...given the youth on the squad.

Here's what the rumor mill has been chewing on as the offseason nears it's official beginning:

-The Sox will be serious about trying to find a replacement for Chris Carter. "Defensive first baseman" might be something of an oxymoron in some circles, but the Sox will be looking for one, according to sources. Carter's defensive misplays have sometimes cost the team and his bat waxes and wanes a bit too much for comfort.

The problem might be...who will be targets? There aren't a lot of defensive first baseman and those that are gifted on defense and know first base are likely to be expensive targets via trade. Stephen Piscotty would seem to be the perfect choice, but the Mariners would likely want a lot...if they dealt at all.

Carter as a DH would be a good idea...but Schwarber is there and while he can play catcher...his defense is not very good.

Carter is eligible for arbitration, so if a replacement isn't found by the November deadline, the Sox might have to deal with it...or deal Carter after he gets his new contract.

-There's a lot of angst over what to do about Buxton. Optimism is trying to hold hope for an Ichiro return, but realism dictates expecting the opposite. That would slide Buxton as a possible starter, though Mallex Smith would also compete for the position (assuming DeShields, Jr. returns - if he retires due to injury, this scenario is moot). If Buxton loses, and he might, what does the team do with him?

His lack of offense is just getting to be a bit annoying, but what does he have left to learn in AAA? Also, is he really worse than Mallex Smith?

-Chapman and Tazawa will both be up for free agency along with Mark Trumbo. The team won't be shy about paying for them, though it will be interesting if the players see it that way. None of them will likely get a qualifying offer, but will all probably get offers during the exclusive period.

If the relievers depart, the bullpen will be in a dire state. Chapman was one of the best pitchers on the team in general, let alone bullpen. Tazawa was a good help and made a nice bridge and support for Chapman in the late innings. There's pretty much no one in the minors that's really major league material, even if the team had to move Robles and Herrera back.

Trumbo wouldn't seem to be a priority on a team with power to burn. He wasn't even starting anywhere. However, he saw action as a PH against lefty relievers and was starter in the vsLHP lineup. He did everything asked of him with pretty good success, so the team will make a serious offer to resign him.

-The catcher position needs help, especially if Pierzynski calls it a career. Sanchez is not ready and Zunino was a bit better...but an upgrade is likely wanted. The team doesn't even want a position battle here, but someone to displace both.

-Tanner Roark will probably not see 2017 with the team. One team source called the Roark acquisition a "failure". Roark might be used as a chip to bring in a catcher or that replacement at 1B.

Following along with that line, the rotation will likely be lacking depth again. Dickey is done, Colon probably too. Roark is not in the plans it seems. And there would be the matter of 5th starter. Rumors are that Alex Reyes is not a part of that plan, and Urias might not be either after his poor debut. Carson Fulmer and Jose Berrios would be next up...and that doesn't seem any better.

                                Prospects Not Going to Help

For a team with youth, there's a surprising lack of prospect expected to make any noise next spring.

The best prospects in the system are still a ways off and very raw, which also means anything could happen to them, good or bad, between now and two or three years from now. SP Kodi Medeiros, assuming he returns from his rehab unscathed, and SS Lucius Fox are two that fit this bill.

The "older" prospects? Not much here. Among those, Jesse Winker probably is the closest to pushing for a bench spot. His bat is coming along, so DH depth and PH specialist could be roles he assumes soon. Making the roster out of Spring Training is possible, but later on, perhaps by the All-Star Break, is more likely and probable.

Avery Romero has already made it up and got a ring for his efforts, and he's about the best infield prospect on the team. At the minimum, he's already a solid contact hitter and plays passable defense. Mallex Smith followed the same path, and earned points for his competitiveness, and will be contending for right field against Bryon Buxton.

The "big four" pitcher prospects, Urias, Berrios, Fulmer, Reyes, were all disappointing. Fulmer is the one who gets the pass since he had the least exposure to the majors. The others? Reyes was the "best" with his incredibly mediocre and inconsistent performances. He was either decent or bad. Not a good mix. Two of them will likely fill spots (5th starter and long relief) unless the Sox can bring in better options during the offseason.

Kodi Medeiros was on a fast-moving trajectory before the injury. If that resumes, he could be a dark horse as he would likely be fast-tracked given the organization situation. Ken Kojima will enter the system, and while he seems a couple years off, he is like Medeiros in that a rapid development could greatly speed his move up the system.

In the bullpen...let's just say when Dylan Bundy is your best option, you don't have any prospects in the bullpen. Bundy should be decent, but he wasn't even that.
