Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

    2016 Offseason Begins

    Notable Team Retirements:
    SP Bartolo Colon
    SP R.A. Dickey
    RF Ichiro Suzuki (HOF Inductee - .311, 116 HR, 756 RBI, 3028 H, 514 SB)
    C A.J. Pierzynski

    Exclusive Period:
RF Mark Trumbo extended for 3 years/13 M.
    P Juinchi Tazawa extended for 4 years/14 M.
    P Aroldis Chapman extended for 5 years/45 M.
CF Delino DeShields, Jr. extended for 6 years/43.6 M.
    3B Joey Gallo extended for 6 years/79 M.
    P Hansel Robles extended for 5 years/8.5 M.

Gallo and DeShields, Jr. are cases where the team is paying more than they need to now for some cost certainty during the arbitration years and for one year of free agency eligibility. Gallo's next contract, in particular, will probably be very expensive if he develops as everyone seems to think, and that would likely start in arbitration as well.

Robles approached the team for a long term deal and the two sides came to an agreement on a number that would get it done.

Extending Chapman, Tazawa and Trumbo were priorities and those goals were accomplished. Chapman reportedly relented on being the "official" closer. The team expects to use him pretty much the same way as they did this season.

    Arbitration Offers:
    P Jeurys Familia
    P Kelvin Herrera
    P Taijuan Walker
    C Mark Zunino
    3B Juan Francisco

    Notable non-tenders so far
    SP Tanner Roark
    1B Chris Carter

    Coaching Changes:
Erich Flowers was hired as new hitting coach. He focuses on helping hitters develop a more direct path to the ball, even at the expense of power.

Charles Parra was hired as new farm director. With the pitching prospects struggling and a Ken Kojima entering the system, the team felt having a director that works the most on how pitchers use their repertoire more effectively was necessary.

    Other Notable Extensions:
    Astros extend P Wade Davis for 6 years/57 M.
Pirates extend RF Jose Bautista for 1 year/12 M.
Braves extend CF Carlos Gomez for 5 years/98.5 M.
Indians exercised their option on Manny Parra.
Giants extend RF Hunter Pence for 4 years/49.6 M.

      Free Agency Begins

Notable Free Agents: (Q = Qualifying Offer Made)
      SP Stephen Strasburg (Q)
      1B Edwin Encarnacion
      CP Francisco Rodriguez
      3B Justin Turner
      3B Yunel Escobar
      SS Alcides Escobar
      CF Austin Jackson
      SS Alexei Ramirez
      RF Franklin Gutierrez
      RF Shane Victorino
      RF Emilio Bonifacio
      C Kurt Suzuki
      SS Jimmy Rollins

Of the notable names, the Red Sox are rumored to be "highly interested" in Bonifacio and Suzuki. The team is also reportedly pondering bringing in James Loney, though some doubt the Sox would really go from Chris Carter to James Loney.

      Trade Rumors:

Another possible trade target was identified at 1B, Daniel Murphy of the Brewers. Murphy display surprising power last season, banging out 24 home runs. The Sox wouldn't expect a repeat of those numbers, but he's a excellent contact hitter and has versatility.

There are conflicting reports about the Sox approaching the Mariners about Stephen Piscotty. One source says those rumors are "false and without merit". Another says that talks, while short-lived, did occur. The reason for the rapid break-off was the Mariners including SP Kodi Medeiros in the package. "That's not happening - it's a non-starter, " the source was quoted as saying.

Piscotti @ 1B would look real nice in that lineup. Hope you find a creative way to get him, could be "the" move of the offseason for a title defense.

Yeah - it might have to happen closer to spring training if it is to happen at all. The thing about a team like this, hardly anyone is technically under contract (renewable, but until they sign a tender, I can't deal them).

So if I wanted to deal for Piscotty, I'd have to try to entice someone to sign "early"...and then I don't know if they'd even want that player.

Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

After a red-hot 4-1 start to the season, my Mets have cooled off considerably. As I type this at work - bored out of my mind nonetheless - we're sitting awfully average at 5-5.

Our offense averaged 5.1 runs per game during our impressive five game run, but has since slowed to a crawl; we're at or around (I think) 2.3 runs per game since last weekend's series against Philadelphia. A nagging elbow injury to star left fielder Orlando Cepeda (.290/1 hr/ 8 rbi) has a lot to do with our sharp decline; or perhaps its my inability to not strike out twelve times a game.

Francisco Lindor has picked up the slack offensively and is currently leading in average, home runs, runs batted in and runs. Ageless Willie Stargell, in all his '79 glory, has also hit well for average, but only has one home run and four runs driven in. The rest of the lineup has been meh, though youngin's Byron Buxton, Nomar Mazara and Joey Gallo have all found a home in our cheesy lineup.

Pitching wise, it's the trio of current Mets - the Dark Knight, Thor and Big Sexy (Kevin Na... Bartolo Colon) that have been the anchor(s) of our staff. Rich Hill has been decent while Carlos Rodon looks like he'd rather swim with my turtle in the tank next to my television than give a decent effort every fifth day. The bullpen has been eh; Koji Uehara has been dreadful (I'm thinking about making Jumbo D...iaz and his 99 mile per hour heater our seventh inning guy but haven't the guts to do such a foolish thing).

All-in-all, I'm having a blast fooling around with this team. Here's to me finishing the 162 game season!

              That Was Fast
              Strasburg Signs Mega-Deal

The Reds didn't waste any time. They went gung ho after Stephen Strasburg and wowed the young ace into signing a contract in just the 3rd day unrestricted free agency.

The total damage was 6 years at $130 million.

Strasburg was just 8-7 with a 3.66 ERA, so the Reds are making a big bet on him making a bounce bag to ace-level performance.

Strasburg might only be a #3 starter as he joins Jose Fernandez and Cole Hamels in Cincy.

              Dodgers Land K-Rod

The Dodgers picked up closer Francisco Rodriguez for one year at about seven million. Rodriguez had a fine season last year, posting a 2.02 ERA and with a one-year deal, not too much concern over his age, having turned 35.

              Edwin Encarnacion Heads to Philly

So far, the trend has been for the more prominent free agents to head to the NL, and the Phillies kept that going by throwing $32 M at Edwin Encarnacion in a 3-year contract.

The 34-year-old swung a power bat by connecting on 38 home runs and finishing one tick shy of .300 in batting average.

Encarnacion may well move across the diamond from 1B to 3B as he would make a big upgrade over Trevor Plouffe, the current Phils third baseman.

              Cubs Pick up Austin Jackson

In one of the more "tame" deals, money-wise, the Cubs picked up 2 years of Austin Jackson for about $8 million in total.

Jackson looks to fill a more reserve role for the Cubs as their outfield might be in place. He probably has the best defense of the major league outfielders on the team.

              Pirates Upgrade Shortstop

Once again, a prominent free agent choose an NL team. This time, the Pirates picked up Alcides Escobar for 4 years/$24 M.

Escobar figures to be the sure starter at shortstop for the Bucs as Asdrubal Cabrera as fallen down in the last season.

Escobar batted .267 with a HR and 30 RBI, but the big deal with him is his defense - very high quality fielder.

Red Sox Get Piscotty in Trade

The rumors must have been true as the Sox made a move to pick up Stephen Piscotty with the arbitration deadline looming. The team made a 1-for-1 deal by sending Jose Berrios to the Mariners in return.

Berrios was one of the "big four" pitching prospects, but, with Urias, Fulmer, and Reyes still around, the depth is still there if needed.

Piscotty is another who hit a surprising amount of home runs, picking up 25. He also hit for a surprisingly low batting average, just .263.

This move pretty much ensures Carter will not be offered arbitration and given his outright release.

Red Sox Snubbed by Wellington Castillo,
              Land Bonifacio

Seeing an opportunity to grab a catcher, if only for a depth/platoon role, the Red Sox made an offer on Wellington Castillo, who was not given arbitration by his former club. However, yet again, the NL team won out as Castillo chose the Cubs over the Red Sox.

To make it worse, the Tigers picked up Robinson Chirinos as well. In two days, the catchers were refused arbitration and both signed to new clubs...neither of them the Red Sox.

The Red Sox did pick up Emilio Bonifacio, perhaps only because they were the only team interested in his services. Bonifacio will make the roster, probably listed as an infielder instead of an outfielder, and should provide very useful depth.

Red Sox Start December by Rejecting
                  Trade Offer on Sano

Perhaps AL teams will try to trade to improve their rosters. If so, the Indians made the first shot in that direction by trying to pry Miguel Sano from the Red Sox.

"Talk about a short phone call, " an unnamed source spoke.

Transcripts of the call were provided (no, we didn't ask how 'he' got them):

Indians: Hello, we'd like to inquire about a trade.
Red Sox: Okay, what did you have in mind?
Indians: We'd be interested in bringing in Miguel Sano and-
                  Red Sox: No, thanks.
Indians: We can make an attractive-
                  Red Sox: Sorry, not interested.
                  *Call ends*

No information was available on what the Indians might have offered. I don't think anyone had time to find out.

                  Cubs Sign Tanner Roark

                  These Cubs.

They are continuing to stalk the free agent market. Now they picked up Red Sox cast off Tanner Roark for 3 years/$8.2 million.

Roark might be competing for a bottom of the rotation slot, though, if his performance for the Red Sox was any indication, long relief might be better...and might be where the Cubs want him.

                  Diamondbacks Grab Carter

And of course, it's an NL team raiding the market. Carter will head out west to play in the desert for the Diamondbacks, earning $3.2 million over 2 years in the process.

This is an interesting move. The Diamondbacks have Freddie Freeman already at 1B. Left field is occupied by Yasmany Tomas, and it doesn't figure that Carter would displace him.

That leaves right field. Dominic Brown might have fallen off enough for Carter to make his way over there, though, defensively, that's hard to imagine. Though, it's also hard to imagine Carter as a bench player.

Sox Extend Daric Barton and Tomas Telis

Looks like Barton will be the defensive depth at 1B. He signed a small contract to stay on the roster and it appears the veteran will get the chance to play in the majors. Barton's bat is questionable, but the glove is not.

Perhaps resigned to the fact that they won't be able to upgrade the catcher position in free agency, the team extended Tomas Telis and has said he'll get the opportunity to compete in Spring Training. With the organization having lost all confidence in Gary Sanchez, that "competition" will be more a "don't screw it up, kid, and you have the job" affair. Zunino is the de facto starter, so Telis can secure the backup slot.

Red Sox Select Ariel Pena in Rule 5 Draft

The Red Sox took SP Ariel Pena in the Rule 5 Draft, citing a need to refill the starting pitching depth as well as find someone who could take the long relief role.

Pena should be able to at least get his share of strikeouts and not be too terrible in giving up hits when the ball does find the bat. Command is the big issue and probably what has held him back to this point, but this is a low-risk move and fills a need.

Sox To Trade Interests: Bring Catchers

The Sox are getting hit with trade offers already and the Winter Meetings have not even begun. To that end, the organization has formally told everyone "bring catchers if you're serious".

"That's the last major piece we want to address right now. We want to help the catcher position, so if there's any interests out there, that's the best place to start, " a team official spoke.

                  Winter Meetings Goals

The team is mostly looking for starting pitching depth from here on out in the market. It's likely that the organization will try to bring in a veteran or two to round out the starting rotation depth, especially given the injury misfortunes of last season.

                      KB,

Are you playing single team franchise like me and letting all the chips fall where they may? Or are you doing 30 teams and handling and orchestrating all this. Just curious. If that is a single team off-season....I am pumped. That is great player movement/offseason.

Are you playing single team franchise like me and letting all the chips fall where they may? Or are you doing 30 teams and handling and orchestrating all this.

Single team only, chips gleefully fell where they wanted.

The only thing I MIGHT do is move players' primary positions. Like in the case of EE, maybe move him to 3B since that seems to be why he was signed. Same for Carter to RF for the D-Backs.

                            B]BIG RED[/B]

The Red's have been baseball's hottest team this season, arriving at the All-Star break at 60-30. After losing 3 out of 4 (3 in a row) to the Cubs in late April, the Reds went on a historic run. A 24 game winning streak was run off, before taking a series loss against the Mariners.

The Red's have faced their share of adversity, with Jose Bautista missing 59 Games. Justin Morneau missed key time, prompting the lefties only Chris Johnson to fill in for almost 2 weeks. Strasburg has been injured twice, luckily only being pulled from a start due to finger blisters. Boog Powell, in only his 2nd game in the majors after being called up to replace the injured Jose Bautista, was lost to injury for 45 days. Upon his medical clearance, Powell was sent back to AAA.

The local media, who were originally unimpressed with the Red's acquisition of Utility Man Phil Gosselin, have fallen in love with the scrappy righty. Manager Freddie Benavides is on the record saying "Our GM was correct when he said Phil wasn't the biggest acquisition possible. What Phil has done, starting in place of Jose & now spending time all around the diamond, has been instrumental to our success this season. I am really hoping a deal gets done in the off season, we would love to see Phil continue his career in Cincinnati.

Sources close to the team have continued to state that despite their strong showings; Justin Morneau, John Axford & Brandon McCarthy are likely to be moved, for prospects. One rival GM was quoted as saying "When you're 60-30, its not conventional to trade away your starting first baseman, and a bullpen arm with a 2.13 era. That being said, there's a reason they are 60-30 and our team is not". If a deal is made, do not expect any type of block-buster prospect in return.

                              TRADE ALERT

The rumors are no longer rumors! Prior to the start of the All Stat Game a trade was swung.

The Reds sent SP Brandon McCarthy, RP John Axford & 1B Justin Morneau to the New York Yankees in return for SP Zach Goodley, RP Brandon Cunniff & RP Robbie Ross.

GM Smith had this to say about the trade, "I know it seems a bit unconventional to trade veterans that are performing this way when you have a season going the way our season has been. With the economics we face in this market, we always need to be looking towards the future. The money freed up from sending Morneau & McCarthy to New York may allow us to be more competitive and successful during free agency & retaining our own guys."

This is a deal that certainly will benefit the Yankees, as Morneau becomes the starter at 1st for another contender. Brandon McCarthy will slot in as the #4 starter, and John Axford will help the Yankees form a formidable bullpen if he can keep up his early season sucuess. Axford, Giles & Familia will look to shorten the games for the Yanks.

On the Reds side of the trade, there was a lot more movement. Top Prospect Michael Fulmer was called up from AAA and will be pitching in the 5th slot in the rotation. Rumor has it he will make a few starts, before being moved to the bullpen to stay fresh for the post season.
Another top prospect, A.J. Reed has been called up from AAA and will be playing first base, batting 5th. The 5 hole should allow Reed to be successful as he will be sandwiched between Jose Bautista & Justin Turner in the lineup.
Brad Hand will serve in the bullpen until further notice.

ASG Simulated: NL wins 2-1 on Ian Kinsler rbi single in bottom of the ninth.

The Reds have started the second half off on a good note. A 4-1 victory followed by a 3-0 against the Brewers. AJ Reed looks impressive, hitting a pinch hit single for his first major league hit. In the second game of the series AJ Reed made his first start, and connected on a curveball in his first at bat for a 435 ft hr to right center. Solo hr's seem to be the flavor of the week. AJ pollock has hit 1, Jose Bautista 3, and AJ Reed 1 in the first two games after the break. The Reds look to sweep the series with Rich Hill towing the rubber vs Madison Bumgarner.

                                TRADE
The Phillies (48-44) acquired 2B Joe Panik from the Indians (40-51). SP Carlos Carrasco & CF Leonys Martin were sent to the Indians in exchange for the steady hitting second baseman.
