Game 2 - LA Dodgers (0-1) at SD Padres (1-0)

It took all of two games this season for the Padres to give the home sellout crowd a heart-attack in the late innings. Aaron Sanchez was cruising along into the bottom of the 7th inning holding the Dodgers to only 2 runs on 2 hits, but after a leadoff BB, followed by a WP and then a single to tie the game-up, then left in the game with 2 outs, a wild pitch on a 3-2 change-up that puts LA up 4-3. Sanchez final line was 7.2 IP 3H 4R 4 ER 3 BB 9K's and two wild pitches.

After Fernando Rodney manages a 1-2-3 9th inning the Padres top of line-up is set to bat in the bottom of the 9th against LA's sinker ball closer Jeurys Familia. But lead-off batter Devon Travis takes an 0-1 fastball over the wall in center to tie the game up at 4. Joc Pederson then singles off the first pitch he see's and is replaced with speedster Jerrod Dyson. Dyson steals 2nd base but Carlos Correa is erased on a nasty slider. The next batter Kris Bryant and with 1-out and a smashes an 0-1 slider up the middle scoring Dyson easily for the walk-off 5-4 win.

"I was looking for something middle-in to put a good swing on. I managed to not miss my pitch." -- Kris Bryant

Game 3 is set for 6:10 local time with the Dodgers Michael Pineda (0-0) taking on San Diego's Brandon Finnegan (0-0).

"I just wanted to get on base. I saw a pitch-up and put a good swing on it. Lucky for me it went over the wall." -- Devon Travis

Game 3 - LA Dodgers (0-2) at SD Padres (2-0)

The Padres were looking to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 1984 (http://www.baseball-reference.com/te...e-scores.shtml). Young lefty Brandon Finnegan would be in tough against the hard throwing Michael Pineda. Both hurlers kept things close with both allowing only one run through 4 innings of play. The Dodgers would take the lead in the top of the 5th on a 2-out ground ball off the bat of Buster Posey that eats up Kris Bryant at 3B and allows Mookie Betts to score giving LA a 2-1 lead.

Howie Kendrick leads off the 8th inning for the Padres with a single up the middle knocking Pineda out of the game. Jake Diekman is summoned to the mound and has Devon Travis sacrifice bunt the pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson into scoring position. Carlos Correa comes up and promptly destroys a 1-1 slider into the left centerfield bleachers for a mammoth 477foot two-run HR to give the Padres a 3-2 lead. Roberto Osuna slammed the door shut with a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first save of the season.

"He hung the slider and I'll admit I got all of it." -- Carlos Correa

San Diego enjoys a day off to travel to Colorado to face the 2-1 Rockies on the first road trip of the season. Probable starter for the Padres is Bartolo Colon (0-0) while getting the home opener nod for the Rockies is Mat Latos (0-0).

"We are off to a great start. But it is a long season so we won't be planning any parades just yet." -- SD Padre Manager, Andy Green

        Wake Up Call?
Red Sox Feel Humiliated After Recent Losses

"Baseball has a way of knowing when you're getting too full of yourself and a knack for hitting you over the head with a 2x4 in response, " manager John Farrel spoke.

This came after the second of a pair of losses to start a 4-game home-and-away interleague series with the Phillies.

"It's pretty embarrassing, really, " Addison Russell commented, "I mean. To lose to that team?"

So what's so bad about losing to the Phillies?

They came into the series at 10-32. That is not a misprint. 10-32.

The Red Sox were nearly 20 games better than them in the standings. In May. Yet the Sox came out flat with the bats in game one and might have gotten skunked in game two if the Phillies weren't so terrible as to nearly blow an eleven run lead. In three innings. Yeah. The Red Sox went down 11-0...to a 10-32 team...and were down 11-0 through six innings. The Phillies ended up winning 11-10.

If that wasn't the low point for Julio Urias, the Red Sox should be really scared about him. He gave up 8 runs (6 earned) in just four innings. To the worst team in baseball. His ERA is now over six, and that leash might have gone from short to suffocating.

The Red Sox will try to salvage some pride in the back half of this series at Fenway.

Game 4 - SD Padres (3-0) at Colorado Rockies (2-1)

Mat Latos was in fine form for the Rockies in the sold out home opener. He manage to keep the Padres off the scoreboard through 6.1 IP while striking out 9 batters in leading the Rockies to the 4-0 win. San Diego bats were baffled all game long as they whiffed a season high 13 times in the loss. Andre Either provided the bulk of the offense with an RBI triple in the 4th inning and an RBI single in the Rockies 3-run 8th inning. Bartolo Colon went a solid 7 innings in the loss.

"It felt great to pitch like that in front of a packed house. " -- Mat Latos

Game 2 of the 3 game series has young Padres lefty Daniel Norris (0-0) taking on the Rockies Charlie Morton (0-0).

"I took advantage of good hitting counts and went with the pitches instead of forcing a swing on them. " -- Andre Eithier

Game 5 - SD Padres (3-1) at Colorado Rockies (3-1)

A cold and rainy night in the Colorado mountains cooled off bats for another night. The humidor has been in full effect as so far neither team has homered at Coors Field this series. Charlie Morton out duels Daniel Morris with a 5 hit complete game to give Colorado their 3rd straight win.

A four hit 3-run 6th inning gave the Rockies a 3-1 lead. Morton would shut the door the rest of the way finishing the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 4th career complete game and his first since 2011.

"I just got in a good rhythm today. I had the confidence to throw any pitch at any time for a strike. When a pitcher has that going for him, he's hard to beat." -- Charlie Morton

The final game of the 3 game set is likely to be another pitching duel between the Padres Adam Wainwright (1-0, 1.00) taking on the Rockies ace Jake Arrieta (1-0, 0.00).

Game 6 - SD Padres (3-2) at Colorado Rockies (4-1)

Both teams aces faced off in the final game of the 3 game series where the Rockies had so far enjoyed home field advantage taking the first two games and looking for the sweep. Jake Arrieta and Adam Wainwright were both dealing through the first 5 innings of play keeping things scoreless. Freddie Freeman manages to get the visiting Padres on the board first with a 2-out single to left scoring Jerrod Dyson for the 1-0 lead. But in the bottom of the 6th the Rockies answered right back when Jake Lamb hit an opposite field wall scraper on a 2-1 cutter to tie things up at 1-1.

Jake Arrieta's pitch count forces him out of the game after 7 strong innings, his final line is 7.0 IP 3H 1R 1ER 2BB 9K, leaving him with a no-decision. Adam Wainwright was also finished after the 7th inning, his final line is 7.0 IP 7H 1R 1ER 0BB 3K, but given a chance to grab the win if the Padres can do damage in the 8th.

"I was looking for a first pitch fastball and something up and in. I got all of it. " -- Freddie Freeman

Well damage was done as Freddie Freeman hits the first pitch he sees with 2-outs and Jerrod Dyson on third (Dyson had stolen 2nd and 3rd in the inning, giving him 4 SB's in the game), deep over the wall in right field to give the Padres the 3-1 lead.

Antonio Bastardo handled business in the 8th and Roberto Osuna came in for a 1-2-3 ninth inning to grab his 2nd save of the season.

"I kept the boys in it and they rewarded me with some late inning runs. We just don't quit. " -- Adam Wainwright

The Padres are off to Philadelphia for a 4-game series vs the NL East leading Phillies. Aaron Sanchez (0-0, 4.70) takes on lefty Drew Pomeranz (1-0, 2.25).

Game 7 - SD Padres (4-2) at Philadelphia Phillies (5-1)

Padres bats explode for 8 runs on 11 hits in an 8-1 pounding of the Phillies. Trouble started early and often for the Phillies Drew Pomeranz walking 2 batters in the first inning and allowing 2 early runs. Philadelphia managed to get a run back in the bottom of the first but Aaron Sanchez settled down and threw a brilliant 7 innings of 3 hit ball including a career high 9 strikeouts to record his first win of the season.

"I settled down after the first inning. Mark (Wieters) called a great game. We were on the same page all game long." -- Aaron Sanchez

The Padres broke the game wide open in the 5th bringing 8 men to the plate, with the final knockout blow being a 2-run HR to left center off the bat of Mark Wieters. That homerun took Pomeranz out of the game before he could manage an out in the 5th. His final line, 4.0 IP 6H 5R 5ER 5BB 1K dropping his record to 1-1 on the season, and raising his ERA to 5.25.

"It was one of those games where everything was working for us." -- Mark Wieters

Game 2 of the 4-game set features the Padres Brandon Finnegan (0-0, 1.50) and the Phillies Taijuan Walker (0-1, 2.57). Both searching for their first wins of the season.

Game 8 - SD Padres (5-2) at Philadelphia Phillies (5-2)

San Diego's hot hitting continued in Game 2 of the 4 game series grabbing 6 runs on 12 hits, while also managing to take 7 walks in the 6-4 win. Ryan Flaherty got his first start of the year filling in at shortstop for Carlos Correa who was given the night off. Flaherty took full advantage of the start. He smashes a 404 ft HR into the second deck in right field in the 2nd inning to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. He homered again in the 4th inning going opposite field off of Taijuan Walker and finished the day 2 for 4 at the plate with 2 HR's and 2 RBI's.

"Great win for us tonight. Just glad I can contribute when I get my chance at some playing time. " -- Ryan Flaherty

Game 3 of the series features the Padres Bartolo Colon (0-1, 3.86) taking on Derek Holland (1-0, 4.05).

Notes: Jarrod Dyson is now 6 for 6 in stolen bases and is tied for the NL lead with Dee Gordon of SF (both with 6 SB's). Roberto Osuna is now 3 for 3 on save opportunities and is tied for the league lead with 3 others. Game 9 - SD Padres (6-2) at Philadelphia Phillies (5-3)

Control problems continued to plague the Phillies in Game 3 of the series leading to a combined 7 walks for the pitching staff contributing to a 3-0 loss. On the other end of the spectrum Bartolo Colon pitched an absolute gem of a game for the Padres going the distance on a 6 hit complete game shutout. His last complete game shutout was Sept. 5, 2015 where he beat the Marlins 7-0.

"He had great control today. It was a joy to watch." -- Andy Green, Padres Manager

Kris Bryant continued torching the Phillies in the series finishing the day 3 for 5, with a 2B, a HR and an RBI, raising his team leading batting average to .457 on the year. His 2nd HR of the season came in the 5th off a hanging curve ball that he absolutely tattooed off the left field foul pole to increase San Diego's lead to 2-0.

"He (Holland) threw me a bit of a hanging curve in my first at-bat. I went up looking for the curve this time. I got a bit excited and jumped on it, luckily it stayed fair. -- Kris Byrant.

The final game of the 4 game set is an afternoon affair ("getaway day"), where Daniel Norris (0-1, 3.86) tries for the Padres sweep with the Phillies starting Anibal Sanchez (1-0, 1.29) looking to salvage at least one game for the home squad.

Game 10 - SD Padres (7-2) at Philadelphia Phillies (5-4)

The Padres continue their strong play scoring 5 runs from 3 HR's mixed with a complete game 3 hit 1 run performance from young lefty Daniel Norris for a 5-1 win, and a 4-game series sweep in Philly. Ryan Flaherty stole player of the game honours from Daniel Norris. In at first base to give Freddie Freeman a day off and he again takes advantage of what little playing time he has gotten by hitting 2 HR's, a solo shot to RF in the 3rd off of Annibal Sanchez, and then a 3-run HR to RF off of rookie left-hander Andy Oliver. Flaherty finishes the day 2 for 4 with 2 HR's and 4 RBI's. He currently leads the Padres in HR's this season with 4, despite only appearing in 4 games (starting in 2 of them).

"What can i say? When you're hot, you're hot" -- Ryan Flaherty

The Padres complete the first road trip of the season going 5-2 and are currently riding a 5-game winning streak. Game 11 - Arizona Diamondbacks (3-7) at San Diego Padres (8-2)

The Padres are handed their first home loss and snap a 5-game winning streak as the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks sneak past San Diego 3-2. Red hot Padre Ryan Flaherty homered for the 3rd time in two days (his 5th of the year) in the bottom of the 3rd inning to tie the game at 1-1.

But it was rookie shortstop Trevor Story who was the difference on this day as he destroys an 2-2 fastball that caught too much of the plate and with a man on was deposited over the centerfield wall. The 2-run HR gave the D-Backs a 3-2 lead in the 7th. Arizona's pen shut the door the rest of the way and rookie Edwin Diaz managed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to grab his 2nd save of the year.

Finally made it through June in my Padres Franchise and we are still cruising along with the best record in MLB(59-20) finishing June at 19-7. Mike Trout is the GOAT, playing at a ridiculous level. The three headed monster at the back of the bullpen has been lights out as well with Betances shutting the door a perfect 35/35 times this season. I know it's only ~ the halfway mark and there is a lot more baseball to be played, but I have a few players who might be able to challenge some all time records by seasons end if they stay healthy and continue at this pace. Game 12 - Arizona Diamondbacks (4-7) at San Diego Padres (8-3)

Jarrod Dyson provided all of the offense needed for the Padres as he scores in the 3rd inning on a wild-pitch after tripling to right center field. Then in the 5th inning he leads off with a solo homer to left center off of Jordan Zimmerman, giving San Diego a 2-0 lead through 5 innings of play.

Aaron Sanchez managed to put together another solid outing on the mound, shutting out the D-Backs through 8 innings, with only 1 walk and 8 strikeouts grabbing his 2nd win of the season. Roberto Osuna came in for his 4th save in 4 save opportunities with an uneventful 1-2-3 ninth inning.

"Aaron (Sanchez) set us up for a great result. I need to just come in and execute. I did that today." -- Roberto Osuna

The rubber match of the 3 game series goes Sunday afternoon with the Padres Brandon Finnegan (1-0, 3.27) taking on the Diamondbacks Jaime Garcia (0-0, 3.29).

                              Boston Lands Studs to Bookend
                              Draft Class

Boston struck prospect gold at the back of the draft, but here's the picks in order:

1st round - David Campillo, C, 19, Cuba - David is all promise and dreams but scouts think those dreams could be big. Defensively, David has the foundations for being a strong receiver with a mediocre arm. However, with the ceiling so high, it's hard to say that's all he could become. With the bat, he's raw like most teenagers, but very well rounded for what he is, suggesting that he could mature with few holes showing up along the way.
Consensus Potential Grade: 97/99, Perennial All-Star+

2nd round - Chris Vaccaro, SP, 21, Cuba - Chris is mostly pure stuff right now, which is what drew interest from teams that scouted him. He has good mid-90's velocity with touching upper 90's. He mixes speeds well, but struggles with location and keeping deception in mind. He doesn't adjust as fast as the hitters, causing him to struggle in later trips through lineups. Movement is a concern as well, but not bad enough to hinder progress.
Consensus Potential Grade: 85/99, 2nd-3rd Starter

3rd round - Julian Santiago, 1B, 21, Dominican Republic - Julian was drafted officially out of the DR but played some college ball in NCAA. That time in college might have refined him enough to get looks from teams. He's still somewhat underdeveloped for a college prospect but it could have been worse. He's got a good body, 6' 4", 220 lbs, but still has some injury issues. Played around the infield in winter ball, but will be anchored at 1B in the majors in all likelihood. If his frame develops power as thought, he might be a DH in the making as well. Then, he could focus solely on hitting development.
Consensus Potential Grade: 86/99, Starting 1B/DH

4th round - Franklin Tackett, LF, 21, UCLA - Franklin fell down some boards as reports of "shortcuts" he took to rise in the UCLA ranks might have taught too many bad habits for reaching high in MLB. Boston took a shot anyway based on his tools, but might find that the consensus was right in this case. Hitting lefties and throwing arm - that's there and what earned him playing time at UCLA. Unfortunately, he never got much action against RHB. That along with what he had to do to succeed at college might cast his future as a starter in doubt.
Consensus Potential Grade: 79/99, Possible starting OF

5th round - Jeff Lopez, RF, 21, Venezuela - Jeff has developed nicely and might be a starter-level player already. He's shown good range in the outfield, looking fluid and natural in RF. He's got the arm as well. At the plate, he has an average knowledge of the strike zone and a stroke that could point to a .300 hitter. Power-wise, he could mature in to a power threat and should be a doubles threat at least, especially at Fenway. He may even leg out a few triples with some good bounces. Overall, a very solid pick, especially this late.
Consensus Potential Grade: 86/99, Starting RF, possible All-Star

6th Round - Emil Pinto, SP, 20, Illinois - This Fighting Illini might be the steal of the draft according to a lot of analysts and scouts. One team's GM high in the order hoped Boston would sleep on Emil in the late 6th as he planned to "make his career" by drafting Pinto in the last round. Emil doesn't have a blazing fastball. It's good enough, but the draw is his nasty breaking stuff. He features a forkball, change, and curve - all with late, sharp break. He doesn't induce K's, he induces terrible contact and keeps his defense involved. Command of that movement has been an issue, and some teams are scared of his low whiff rate while in the NCAA system. Most scouts, though, see big things ahead for this finesse pitcher.
Consensus Potential Grade: 97/99, Perennial All-Star/Cy Young contender.

Game 13 - Arizona Diamondbacks (4-8) at San Diego Padres (9-3)

Padres let a game get away from them in a big way allowing 2-runs in the 9th and 5 runs in the 10th for a disappointing 8-3 loss at home on Sunday afternoon. Sand Diego wastes a great pitching performance from Brandon Finnegan as he took a no-hitter into the 7th inning but was forced to leave the game with a high pitch count, his line 6.0 IP 2H 1 R 0 ER 2 BB 9 K's in the no-decision.

Roberto Osuna blows his first save of the season giving up 2 runs in the 9th forcing the game into extra innings at 3-3. He then fails to record an out in the 8th getting tagged with 2 more runs when Jeremy Jeffress gives up a 3-run HR to Arizona shortstop Trevor Story solidifying the loss.

"It good we have an off-day to regroup and rest after that one. Those are losses we don't want to repeat." -- Andy Green, San Diego Padres Manager.

The Padres enjoy an off-day on Monday in preparation of hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates for a 3-game set. Game 1 will have the Padres Bartolo Colon (1-1, 1.69) take on the Pirates Jered Weaver (2-0, 1.62).
