END OF MONTH REPORT - APRIL

The Red's have had an eventful month of up's and downs. The first two weeks of the season resulted in being swept by the Padres at home to open the Season, as well as Kansas City. To close out the month, the Red's lost 3 out of the final 5 games, including a series loss to the team with the worst record in baseball, the Cardinals.

It looks as though the team has adjusted to their new manager Dave Roberts, and his Run-Run-Run philosophy, as the Red's lead the Major Leagues with 83 stolen bases. The team that sits behind them, the Rangers, have 24.

The Reds are dead-last in the Majors in the home run category with only 14 on the season. Struggling to draw walks, yet again another last place category, the Reds have offset the problem by striking out the least in the league.

Heres how the Red's are looking after the first month of the season:

      Prospect/Minors Watch:
SP Sean Newcomb: The Red's top prospect continues to impress. Newcomb sports a 3-1 record through 37 innings, 25 strikeouts and a 2.68 ERA. Newcomb will continue to refine his game at AAA, as a call-up is not likely until after the All-Star break.

SP Brady Rodgers: The sole pitching representitive for the Red's in last years future game, Rodgers has not made the leap scouts had hoped he would this season. Rodgers record sits at 0-1 at the end of April. Coupled with a 4.06 ERA, Rodgers is going to need to figure it out quick if he wants a future in the Majors.

      SP Paul Carew:
The 2016 draftee is lighting it up in AA. As the Ace of the staff, Carew has pitched himself to a 4-0 record through 37.2 innings of ball. Carew has 27 Strikeouts to go along with a 2.39 ERA. A move to AAA might be in short order.

CP Jeff Lopez: Another 2016 draftee, the 22 year old Lopez is showing well at AA. 8/9 in Save chances, with a loss. Lopez is averaging just under 1 strikeout per inning at AA.

2B Rafeal Sierra: Yet another 2016 draftee, the 20 year old infielder is having mixed results at AAA. The average, .239, is shocking as scouts raved about his ability to make contact. On the other hand, Sierra has 4 homeruns and 12 rbi batting in the 2 hole.

3B Kaleb Cowart: Cowart continues to press the issue that he belongs in the majors. a .351 batting average and the ability to push across runs may force the Reds hand sooner than later.

C Carson Kelly: The 22 year old backstop will most likely spend the majority of the season at the AAA level. The Reds are committed to Kelly as the future of the Catching position, but still want him to work on his offensive profile. Kelly is doing his part, hitting .286/2hr/13rbi.

CF Clint Frazier: Frazier is progressing as expected, but does not look to be a serious candidate for the majors until next season. This bodes well for Frazier, as A.J. Pollock and Josh Hamilton are free agents next year.

1B/C Tommy Joseph: Joseph looks to be blocked at the majors due to A.J. Reed and Nick Hundley. 7HR & 18RBI through the month of April have Joseph being looked at most heavily by teams scouting the Reds for trades.

      Injuries

The Red's have suffered no injuries to the major league roster as of yet. The minor leagues on the other hand, have been plauged. The most notable injury to date has been one of the Red's top 15 prospects, LF Derek Fisher. Fisher will be out 1-2 months due to a broken foot suffered while running out an infield single.

Red's Open May With A Bang

The Red's turned the page on the calendar, and Stephen Strasburg is hoping the bat's have turned the page on the lack-luster run support he received in April. The Red's absolutely took it to the visiting Astros, in a 8-2 victory in front of the home crowd.

Strasburg was dominate as usual, going the distance and giving the bullpen a day off. Strasburg earned his 3rd victory of the season, allowing 5 hits (1 homerun) and striking out 13.

After a quiet showing with the bats in April, the Reds woke up and brought the boom. Josh Hamilton hit a 3 run HR in the bottom of the First, Boog Powell hit a solo shot followed by a 3 run HR from A.J. Pollock later in the 7th inning, capped off by a solo hr from Nick Hundley in the 8th. Stephen Strasburg even joined the party, going 2-3 with a run scored.

        NEXT UP
The Red's will look to secure a series victory, before traveling to Chicago for 4 games, and Atlanta for 3.
Pitching Matchups for Reds v Astros:
        Chris Tillman (2-1 2.53) vs Jamie Garcia (1-2 4.05)
        Tom Koehler (1-4 5.60) vs Chad Billingsley (1-1 4.38)

Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

          Chapman's Crazy Season

Aroldis Chapman is doing it again. He's becoming one of the Sox most valuable pitchers despite working from the bullpen.

He's not working quite as much as last season where he racked up 94 innings, but he's still 4th on the team in pitching WAR at 1.43. Perhaps even more impressive because he's not producing the same workload. He's packing more dominance in there to make up for it.

And if the workload does increase, he might be in line for a ridiculous total for a reliever.

So far, Chapman is producing a 0.57 ERA (0.63 FIP). His per 9 inning rates are 15.3 K/9, 3.1 BB/9, 4.8 H/9, and 0 HR/9. That's right, he's yet to allow even one long ball so far.

          Herrera, New Closer?

The other prominent back-of-the-bullpen man is Kelvin Herrera. So far, the move from mid relief to closer has proven beneficial for him.

He's 11 of 12 in save chances and has a 3.05 ERA, but, once again FIP likes him much better, checking at 1.40 for a huge difference.

This success has put Familia's future with the team in some jeopardy in the views of many analysts. He might be a trade piece come July to a team that wants some help at closer.

          Oz-Rod, When?

So far, the existing pitchers are making it easy for Ozzie Rodriguez to take an instant foothold in the rotation. Julio Urias' first outing since last season was about as bad as last season's outings.

Urias will get more outings, but if they are too much like this first one, then Alex Reyes might want to keep his phone handy because he'll get the call next.

Meanwhile, Jared Weaver has suffered through a couple poorer outings, though overall his numbers are decent enough, 7-4, 3.63 ERA though his FIP is a meager 4.30. His WAR is actually lower than Chapman's, which is pretty sad considering Weaver has three times the number of innings.
"Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18

            RUMOR MILL

Entering May, the rumors are already starting to pick up across the league. Reports are that if the Cardinals can't crawl out of the cellar, J.D. Martinez may very well be traded.

On the Reds side of things, things get a little more interesting. Amid Tom Koehlers season long struggles, fans and analysts have suggested a trade or a demotion is in order. Speaking to a source within the Reds front office, Koehlers spot in the rotation is safe, at least for the time being. The Reds are holding out hope that at the very least Koehler rebuilds some value prior to making a move.

In the minors, the Reds have veteran Bud Norris, the high upside/high injury Jarod Parker, and 2016 draftee Paul Carew performing well. So if Koehler is in fact moved his replacement will come from within.

Sources close to GM Joe Smith have some startling news if the rumors prove to be true. Our unnamed source has stated that Smith is exploring the possibility of moving veteran third baseman Justin Turner. Turner has proved to be a stable defender and a great presence in the Reds lineup. Smith is said to have no plans at retaining Turner, as Pollock will be looking for a payday & big time free agents such as Jake Arrieta & Bryce Harper are said to be targets.

With Turner looking likely to be moved at some point this season, the Reds are said to have tabbed internal option & third base prospect Kaleb Cowart to fill the void. Cowart has a plus glove, and a good hit tool. At 24 years old, The hope is Cowart will be able to join a young core that includes Dansby Swanson & A.J. Reed.

In the short term, it appears the veteran 1st baseman is on his way to being designated for assignment. Johnson played a big role splitting time with Justin Morneau and boasted a .320+ average as a platoon partner last season. This year, that is simply just not the case. Johnson's batting average is getting closer and closer to his body weight. With Kelly Johnson producing with his bat at AAA the leashe seems to have tightened. The Reds are said to value johnsons defensivel versatility, and he would bring a much needed left handed bat to Dave Roberts bench.

              Maeda Sidelined After Sox
              10-3 Win vs Royals

The Sox won one by pulling away late in the rain, but it came at a price as a key starter will go down for a while.

Maeda was diagnosed with a stress fracture after the game. He wasn't particularly sharp and this might have been why. There's little likelihood of permanent damage and no break detected, but trainers will shut Maeda down for 4-8 weeks just to be safe and ensure full healing.

Maeda hasn't been great, per se, but he's been very solid and his numbers pretty much mirror what they were last season. His ERA is again 3.50, his WHIP again in the 1.20 range, and his record is similar, 10-5 this year vs 11-7 last year.

The Sox signed Mark Buehrle, and he will start in the Sox next game as the series continues with the Royals.

Surprised he didn't retire! Never the less, good crafty vet - could plug in some long relief / spot starts once meada is back. Good pickup kb.

I'm having such a hard time figuring out what to do with Justin Turner. On one hand he's the 3rd highest rated offensive player on my roster. On the other hand, he's on the wrong side of 30 and not good enough to warrant a QO at seasons end. Cowart can and will replace him, just don't know what to send him off for. The O's have offered Zach Britton or Tomy Watson for Turner & Koehler - but I'm set in the pen. It's sad when you win the World Series, and are in second place - but looking to trade a cog for prospects, all while still contending.

If you're not sure what to get back in trade and don't see any deals that could help a pressing need - maybe just hold on to him? I know you don't just want to lose him for nothing, but better to keep him around than to trade him in a deal you only halfheartedly want to make.

First thing would be to see what your biggest needs are. Even if you can't get an ideal fit, getting an if-and-maybe prospect that has some hope in that area or something like that could work.

If your Justin Turner looks like the one I'm seeing, I'm thinking he'd be a nice bench bat to keep around at the least. Does yours have 90/84 Contact ratings with 50's Power ratings?

Mid 80's on contact, mid 50's on power. He's rated an 83 before his morale boost, so he's more than serviceable. The issue is I don't want Cowart to rot in the minors, and I for sure will not retain Turner in the offseason. Thinking of shipping him for a low/mid 60's corner of with B potential and a young low potential power arm.

Losing my #5 hitter will hurt, but sandwiched in between Josh Hamilton/A.J. Reed, I think Cowart would provide a little less offense, with a little better defense. The corner Of prospect could help since I have an injured Derek fisher and Guerrero in the minors, josh Hamilton not being resigned, and the chance of retaining Pollock & signing Harper this offseason a crapshoot.

(Worst/best thing about a fantasy draft franchise for me is having players that aren't my favorites; I.e. Astros, and having to make those long term - non fan decisions that will effect the team long term.)

Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

Alright so I have been away from the Fantasy franchise for a bit (playing my Cubbies Franchise) and now that I look back on the team I don't want to use them anymore so I drafted over again Using the Padres.

                      CF Clint Frazier (33rd)

Im not sure how the team is set up for being in San Diego but we will see how it goes.

I have enough pitching that if injuries happen I have another whole rotation waiting in Triple-A.

Dansby Swanson is about ready to be up in the majors so I may end up trading away Profar and have either Russell or Swanson play at 2nd, Rodgers is still a few years away so it isnt known if he will be good or a bust yet

If Mallex Smith doesn't work out in CF Clint Frazier may be the answer

Gave up a good deal of prospect in those trades as well

I love Yelich as well didn't think he would last another round or two so I took him second, It was a tough choice between Stanton, Springer or Marte

                              DeShields Gives Sox a Scare
ACL Injury Eerily Similar to Last Year's

DeShields, Jr. might be developing some knee issues in his young career. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, he immediately grabbed the back of his left knee and pounding the dirt in agony.

The training staff raced out to tend to their player and had to help him off the field. That really got everyone scared.

Fortunately, though, the damage was much less than the pain and it was more a strain than the complete tear that he suffered last season. Still, he will have to miss weeks with the injury, and with Buxton still on the mend and Smith already up for that injury, the Sox outfield depth is getting thin.

The team had waived Brett Eibner to remove him from the 40-man roster earlier that day, so the stopgap option of last year was not available.

The thought of signing an old face in Coco Crisp was palatable...until they got the offer from his agent. Rumors are that it was for $3 million per year. Rajai Davis wanted similar money. Peter Bourjos was thought to be the next option, but instead, the Sox pulled Yusniel Diaz from AA to give him a cup of coffee in relief of DeShields.

Diaz is similar to Mallex Smith with the biggest difference being defensive refinement. Mallex is far more comfortable and natural in the field. Diaz relies on his raw speed to make up for his lack of instincts and quick first step.

Bonifacio will likely stay in his reserve role as he can provide time off for too many positions. That will allow the 19-year-old Yusniel to get full time action for the 3-4 weeks he'll be on the roster.

The Sox are currently enjoying a 8 1/2 game lead as July begins. Throughout most of the first half, the Red Sox have enjoyed this advantage in part due to their record in the division. The team is 18-9 (.667) against their rivals, 30-22 (.576) outside the division.

The team's record is currently 48-31. The team ERA is decent at 3.70, but the offense is again leading the way.

                                Development News and Notes:

Scouts are becoming more impressed with SS Jorge Mateo this year as he's adding quite a few doubles, already matching his last season total, to his offense. The grades for Mateo are gradually creeping up offensively.

Meanwhile, scouts are becoming less impressed with LF Miguel Sano...and it's hard to see why. Last season, they were gushing over him as he put up a .340/.393/.674 line. This year, Sano is at .329/.396/.629. Slugging is lower, but it's not as though he's fallen off.

No shortage of praise for 3B Joey Gallo (again) as he puts up.....a similar line to Sano (.312/.381/.632).

SP/RP Dylan Bundy (AAA) has been doing far better this year, and evaluators have taken notice. They are impressed with his ability to strike hitters out this year and manage contact better so that he gives up a few less hits on balls in play.

SP Ken Kojima (AA) is slowly coming along, but he is making progress. The command continues to be as advertised, though there's still some questions about how he'll do once he reaches the high minors.

RF Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. (AA) has shown some worrying signs to scouts recently. They are not enamored with his lowish batting average, just .240 in AA, and they aren't sure he'll ever become a natural power hitter against LHP. He seems more tentative against southpaws.

The same is being said about C Gary Sanchez (AAA). In fact, scouts are starting to question if he's really a sure starter at the catcher position. "He might get it one day, almost by default, assuming he'll grow at least a little more. But he's going to be someone they constantly look to upgrade, " one scout spoke.
