Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

Bud Norris pitched lights out in his debut, striking out 8 in 5 innings and earning the victory in a 5-1 game against Seattle. The Indians (35-23) are off to play the Angels (33-27) in a matchup of division leaders. Fans of offense will surely enjoy this series.
    Pitching Matchups
    Rick Porcello (6-3 5.33) vs Doug Fister (7-3 2.49)
    Steven Matz (8-2 3.91) vs Kyle Gibson (4-6 4.07)
    Michael Fulmer (7-4 3.78) vs Tanner Roark (2-4 3.23)

    Big Bats
The Angels have a formidable lineup from top to bottom. Jason Kipnis, Adam Jones, Josh Donaldson, Giancarlo Stanton, Mitch Moreland, Trevor Story & Alex Gordon suit up as the first 7 batters for the Angels. ERA's are sure to climb for both teams.

A 1-0 victory - only 2 hits from the Angels, as Andrew Miller & co shut down the Angels from the 7th inning on. Maybe the pitching is coming along finally

Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

        Spoiler

        Diamondbacks Claim Familia

Familia will get a second life in the desert as he hopes to help the DBacks get it going.

What is interesting is he'll face a similar situation. The Diamondbacks have Zach Britton established as their closer. He racked up 32 saves and a 2.88 ERA. It will be interesting to see Familia's usage.

        Brewers Grab Zunino

Mike Zunino will also head to the NL. The Brewers picked him up, presumably, to compete for the second catcher job at the majors. Right now, Zunino is still in their AAA system, but that figures to change sooner than later. Austin Hedge is on the roster as backup catcher, but he batted just .200 in 111 ABs, so it's hard to imagine he has a stranglehold.

        Blue Jays Extend Donaldson

Canada will remain the home of his big bat as he signs a deal covering 3 years and worth $62 million over that span.

Sox and Walker Come to Terms

Part of the Sale salary savings shows up right here as the team was able to give their young starter a long-term contract. Walker will get $47.5 million over the next 5 years.

        Phillies Win Jose Bautista Fight

Several teams lined up to give Jose Bautista a one-year contract. The values remained tightly compacted, giving the aging star a choice of several similar deals.

In the end, he settled on the Phillies.

The Phillies needed a right fielder, and now they have their man, at least for a year.

Bautista, 37, batted .265 with 27 HR and 80 RBI last season. Scouts think he'll have plenty left in the tank for the coming season.

        Giants Trade for DeShields, Jr.

Of the members of the outfield up for trade discussion, DeShields Jr never really entered the minds of most.

However, the Giants came with an offer of SP prospect Brent Honeywell and reliever Carter Capps, and that was enough to get the deal done. The Sox also sent RF prospect Maurice Smith in the deal.

"That seems a bit low, but DeShields does have two back-to-back seasons of suffering a long-term injury. That probably depressed his trade value. The Sox also got another arm to try to improve the bullpen, " a local analyst spoke.

Capps posted a strong 2.05 ERA in 61 innings of work as the Red Sox look for someone who can provide help to Chapman in the bullpen. Capps looks like he could be that man, and those stats back up the idea.

DeShields, Jr will probably move to LF for the time being. Billy Hamilton is entrenched in CF and Hunter Pence is a favorite in RF. LF has no one established, so that makes for a good spot.

DeShields Jr batted .254 with 8 HR, 34 RBI and 28 SB, and he should provide nearly flawless defense.

Meanwhile, this clears the path for Mallex Smith to join the outfield, likely in right field for synergy with the Hernandez platoon strategy. It may also take the target off Sano's back as the outfield settles nicely into place with a Sano/Buxton/Smith trio and Kike Hernandez and Mark Trumbo as depth/platoon starters.

        Rule 5 Draft Results

Not much to tell here. There was exactly one pick made in the draft. The Astros selected SP Nick Kingham from the White Sox.

Kingham could be the team's 5th starter, though there are other candidates as well. Evidently, the Astros liked Kingham's profile more than their existing candidates.

I agree. Capps has nasty swing and miss stuff. Very good in the setup role or as a closer.

Re: Official MLB The Show 16 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread

Made it through May in my Padres Franchise and my team is absolutely dominating. We are on a 10 game win streak that we closed the month with and that brings our record to a MLB best 40-13! The pitching has been lethal and all 5 of my starters are on hot streaks. 4 out of the last 9 games our starter has thrown a CG SHO after we only threw 1 in the first 44 games. Two of these SHO were thrown by Rookie sensation Julio Urias who has really come into his own over his last 4 starts. as a team we are 9th in Avg., 2nd in Runs, T-1st in HR and we lead MLB in team ERA. My pitching has been so dominant I am contemplating increasing my difficulty, but I refuse to do it mid-season so I will continue on with HOF for the remainder of the year and if I feel it needs to be harder I will up it. Here are the players stats(I didn't include all of my bench players and I only put my big three relievers):

Yeah, though I think I'll try him in the middle at first because that's where we need the most help. Chapman/Tazawa is still a good set-up combo. MR has Robles who SHOULD be better, but...and Kalita, who might not make the team, although it's likely.

I think a Capps -> Chapman -> Herrera could make the game a 6 inning game if they are on.

I find myself using Miller more and more often in the 6th or 7th to get me out of a jam. Still have Rodney/Smith to bridge the gap after Miller and Dan Jennings (the man who has a .215 baa but a 6era ) if a tough lefty shows up.

Colby Rasmus Powers Royals To A Critical Game 3 Win For The Royals 7-5. The Series now sits 2-1 In Favor Of The Red Birds.

Colby Rasmus was having a banner post season through the ALDS and ALCS. Then he went into a tailspin. We are talking a snowball like descent whiffing 6 of his last 7 AB's. That was until the 6th inning of game 3 in KC vs The Cardinals. NL ROTY Kenta Madea was staked to a 3-2 lead. He had men on 2nd and 3rd with one out and Chris Colabello on deck. A mound visit and discussion took place and according to Manager Mike Matheny, Madea wanted to go right at Rasmus who had already struck out 2 times and looked lost at the dish this entire series. Madea got what he wanted. On his first pitch to Rasmus he went high and inside and left it up too good as Colby smashed a 400 ft bomb into RC for a 3R HR. The crowd went crazy and the Cardinals were not able to over come it. They did load the bases though in the top of the 9th and were able to push across one run to make the Royal faithful sweat it out. But the door was shut and the Royals climbed back into the series with a 7-5 win. David Price (4-1) earned his 4th win in the post season. Not particularly sharp, he was able to scatter 4 runs over 7 innings. Greg Bird continued his march to post season history as he doubled and cranked out a mammoth 444 ft bomb to finish with 2 RBI's and going 3-4. He raised his average to an incredible .403 in the post season as he has been tearing the cover off the ball.

Tonight Carlos Rodon takes the ball to face Taiwan Walker who has struggled mightily this post season. It's a tale of 2 pitchers as Rodon has been nothing short of Ace material this post season while Walker has looked like a 5th starter at best. The Red Birds look to take control of the series with a win tonight. If the Royals can win 2 in a row we have a best of 3 series moving forward with two of those game to be played in St Louis including a winner take all game 7 if necessary. The All-Star Win in the bottom of the 9th by the NL now looms large for The Red Birds pursuit of their first WS win in "The Matheny Manifesto"!

Wow - that should be interesting.

If he throws a baseball like he threw a football...he might be a 2B or LF

I wonder what will happen if Melissa Mayeux (currently 16 and on the official MLB prospect list and can be signed by teams) makes it to professional ball, even as a minor leaguer. Will we see female players in next year's Show?

Supposedly he's looking to play LF. I guess he was pretty good in HS

                              Winter Meetings
Sano at Eye of Rumors...and a Trade Offer

Much of the buzz surrounding the Winter Meetings was the possibility of a young budding star like Miguel Sano being moved. The Sox have been a hard-to-describe team this offseason, so other GMs weren't quite sure how to approach the Sox.

The Twins came forward with an offer to bring Sano back to the Twin Cities.

The offer reportedly included Michael Fulmer, a top 50 prospect heading into 2018 according to Baseball America.

The Sox refused the offer and when asked about maybe a counter offer, a Sox official said "Twins don't have the talent. Period."

                              Aybar Joins Jays

Erick Aybar signed a 1-year contact worth $3.6 million to play for Toronto.

The Jays already have Didi Gregorius, so it's interesting to see them pursue Aybar. The reasoning for this may become clear later on.

                              O's Trade for Adrian Gonzalez

The O's continue to make an effort for an improved offense this coming season by adding power-hitting Adrian Gonzalez from the Braves.

Gonzalez had a bit of a down year last season, picking up just 17 HR, though he did bat .286 with a .343 OBP. The power seems to be there still, so the low HR total is a bit of a mystery.

Greg Bird played 1B last season, and he hit 25 HR but batted in the .240's and scouts have soured some on Bird's upside. Perhaps Adrian Gonzalez will take some pressure off Bird in the lineup and the young slugger might can learn from Gonzalez's experience.

                              Tigers Offer on Sano

The Tigers are the latest team to try to pry Sano away from Boston. This offer centered around decent veteran 2B Jonathon Schoop and a backup-level catcher.

"Not even close, " one analyst spoke, "Did they really think that was going to do it? No prospect? No tempting upgrade elsewhere? Someone worse than Russell and a backup catcher? Tigers, please.

                              Rangers Acquire C Hedges

Austin Hedges joins the Rangers after being traded in a deal that sent SP Jameson Taillon to the Brewers.

Hedges is mostly noted for his strong defense behind the plate. Normally, that would slot him in "nice to have depth" category, but Alex Avila is horrible at the plate, so Hedges will have a chance to win the starting job.

Brewers pick up 26-year-old former prospect Jameson Taillon. Jameson has gone from good prospect to project-with-upside as his development has been slow thus far.

                              Piscotty Extends

Stephen Piscotty came to terms with the club on a long-term deal. The details are rumored to be 5 years at about $27 million in total value.

Piscotty's first year in Fenway was excellent. He batted .326 with nearly a .400 OBP and 17 HR.

They Lost but Don't Feel Bad for Them
                              Arbitration "Losers" Still Make Bank

Don't shed any tears for Jose Fernandez. He "lost" his arbitration case vs. the Reds. However, he'll still make 7 figures, getting an $11 million contract award from the arbitrator. That's the highest figured award this arbitration session.

Another "loser" who still got paid is Manny Machado. He's losing case still netted him over $7 million, the fourth highest arbitration contract this offseason. He fell behind two winners, Matt Harvey ($8.6 million) and Xander Bogaerts ($8.1 million).

                              Welcome to Spring 2018!
