Nope the influence you choose effects the type of swing you take. There are bonuses and negatives of each swing type. Refer to earlier in the thread I've written a ton about it. (I think it starts on page 4)

Directional is more about picking a swing before the pitch and waiting for the ball to come to you.

In Franchise mode, How do you change the starter? I'm a bit overwhelmed with how much you can do in this game haha.

I have this rookie LF that's 18 years old and a 77 OVR i think. I want to player lock on him for the season, but I THINK I can only select from starters?

Before the game, right after you choose to play a screen should come up with your lineup. You should easily be able to press x on the player you want to sub out and then choose a player from the bench to sub in.

During the game you can either do it from the pause screen, or I believe down on the dpad, press substitutions and follow the same process.

I'm at work right now so remembering the exact buttons and stuff is a bit tough for me, but I'm pretty sure that is the process.

Can I change it before I decide to play a game though? Like in the roster menu?

Idk I'd you play Madden, but I'm looking for something like a depth chart. Where I could sit a 99 OVR starter for a lesser overall. As a way to create game suspensions or resting players.

Ya you should be able to go to where all your rosters and things are in the main franchise menu, and there should be a lineup option. Click it and you can set your 4 different lineups that will be your default for each game depending if you have a DH or not, and if you face a RHP or LHP.

Oh. Oh. Oh. Ok I did see that! so let me ask this question then.

If the 99 OVR left fielder is in the batting line up and I swap him for a 77 OVR left fielder. Will the 77 OVR left fielder now be in the outfield during the game?

Is that how baseball works? Your line up is basically your starters on the bases, outfield, catcher , etc?

Yes, whoever you sub him in for is the position he will take. You can also interchange positions of the players in your starting lineup by using the square button I believe instead of x.

                          PITCHING

Interested to see what strategies you guys take when you are pitching against the CPU, especially if it's a mismatch.

When you are pitching against a dangerous hitter what is your approach? vs a guy that you consider a "sure out" more times than not?

How do you change your approach when you're ahead in the count? Behind?

Curious to see how strategies change for each batter / situation.

I also have noticed that I have a tendency to throw too many strikes, which more times than not leads to too maybe balls being left over the plate. Any advice? Thanks

Similarly to the above post, how do you all pitch to contact/induce ground balls/avoid constant fouling off?

Re: MLB The Show 17 Teach Me/Strategies Thread

Pitching is a bit hard to convey. I think everyone has their own strategy that could work. I'll try to keep my strat basic and transferable between the pitching interfaces.

                              1. Work the corners: Staying out of the middle is key, but the better the hitter the more important it is to work the corners. Remember you don't always have to be in the strike zone to work a corner.

                              2. Mix it up: Both location and pitch should be a mystery to the batter. But remember, sometimes the same pitch in the same location IS mixing it up.

                              3. Read the batter: Look at their stance. What parts of the plate will they have to adjust the most in order to reach. Watch their swing. Did they manage to adjust? Were they early? Late? Use this info to further keep the hitter off balance.

                              4. When in doubt, a slider running away out of the zone is always a powerful strikeout pitch.

                              5. When a batter is looking for a fastball, the changeup is the most powerful pitch in the game.

                              6. If they keep fouling off, keep going further out of the zone.

                              7. Sometimes you can make the perfect pitch in the perfect location and still get burned. Don't let this unsettle you. All that matters is that your pitcher hit his spot. You can't blame them (or yourself) for the result. Don't let bloops get to you either. This can be a mental game. You made a great pitch and kept the hitter off balance. You just had some bad luck. Part of the game.

                              8. If your pitcher starts out strong and seems sharp, hitting his spots, etc that's a good time to pound the strikezone and keep that pitch count down. If they're struggling, labouring, fighting, you might want to do a few more setup pitches, and just aim for 5 innings. Reading you're own pitcher's body language and results can help you manage, but be cognizant enough to recognize if they manage to "hit their stride".

                              9. My most important piece of advice: Trust your gut. Don't overthink an at bat up their. You need to be in the batters head, not your own. "Because I want to." Is as good a reason as any to throw a pitch.

i have been playing this game avidly since release and I'm ok at pitching (on all star) but not so good at batting.

here's the thing, I'm a bit too good for beginner, i just tee off...but move me up to rookie and i'm just about good enough, but not quite. i get on base, i get hits, but inevitably I almost always lose due to the lack of runs.

i'm playing as the indians so it's not the team I'm using

can anyone recommend a slider setting(s) or another settings change so I could get like a setting between beginner and rookie to play on for a while?
