Re: MLB The Show 18 First Impressions

An update to my earlier review and Sounds of the Show. I was incorrect in the amount of space that was lost. It was 1G of space and it was a "team player” decision by the SOTS team at SDS. Please read below. And I am very happy to report the “reverb” and “volume” fixes are on the way!

Sounds of The Show - we lost 1G of space this cycle. That really stinks after getting more for 17. So I had to make some choices and it really was not hard to do in that regard since I play in the AL with my proper Yankees Franchise (carried over from 17). All teams on my schedule will be fully loaded with walkups, stadium sounds and vendor yells. I was able to fit all of that. But they need to patch the volume and reverb. It is too low. I know they have been made aware of this by Cujomatty and Lowlight and I am sure they will adjust it. But losing that extra space was a bummer and hopefully we get it back for 19.

"Edit" I also want to point out the team that works specially on the SOTS was asked to cut back by 1G to help the online team get some more stability and you know baseball is a team sport....and they are being team players. I know they will fight next cycle to get back that 1G of space and it is confirmed that SOTS will be patched for “Reverb” and overall “Volume” being improved!!

      That's great news.

For somebody who is going to expand his SOTS throughout the rest of the league, can you help inform me exactly how much space we do have and can add? If I added all of the NL teams, would I be able to fit them all? Thanks.

Yes you can fit then plus your interleague AL teams.

I guess I missed the part about you saying we lost 1GB of space, then. Was that crucial for us? Or are you saying that you reduced the sizes of the files or something to compensate?

So what exactly does that mean? Are we back to only 500 slots? No multiple sound themes?

Re: MLB The Show 18 First Impressions

Found a 1996 roster set while browsing to find v1.5 for OSFM. Gosh, it's so much fun.

Played a game as ATL vs. NYY and had an absolute blast. Andruw hit 2 HRs, I made a couple of mistakes with Smoltz to be down 2-3. Andy Petitte was dealing until the 8th when the MGR pulled him and I was able to get ahead until my bullpen gave up a tying HR in the bottom half so the 9th inning was so stressful to try and get a run (which I did).

This game is just so much fun, I'm glad I got it. The gameplay (which is the core of the game), is so enjoyable. I don't find like I'm getting cheesed, I make a mistake and it gets hammered and I do the same to the AI.

We have enough room to make it work well...just not the full monty like last cycle. But I am confident on 19 we will get back that 1GB, read my reply below to the approach I take in setting up my SOTS.

                - So what I did to compensate for the loss of space (it was not a huge hit but enough where I can't fit every teams walks ups and stadium sounds) was cut out all the pitcher walk ups for A.L. teams (since they only hit in Interleague games so no biggie). I kept Closer walk out music though. I also cut out a lot of the team Yells and jeers as it is repetitive for each team file. I did keep 3 team cheers for every squad and all batter walkups. I also cut out most of the pitcher walk ups for the NL except number 1 and 2 starters and closers. I also since I primarily play in the AL (Yankees Franchise) only did SOTS of my entire schedule. So I have every A.L and N.L teams on my schedule batter walk ups, stadium sounds, between inning music, three main team cheers, I have a vendor yells file I kept from MLB 16 which has dozens of those as well as umpire trash talking yells as well. For the MLB Network package I let that theme music play between innings. For theme 1 I use the regional broadcast music between innings, and for theme two I use the stadium music in between innings. I get three different broadcasts doing this. The copy and paste function is also excellent and makes setting up theme 1 and 2 a lot quicker.

                - That is by non other than OS's Baumy. He has also uploaded 1997 and will eventually get his 1998 40 man up. He is also working on 1995 and 1999. He makes great rosters. Check out the Classic Roster Thread.....tons of great stuff coming this cycle. 1987 Full Minors, PjSnell's OS All-Time Roster, Bostongahden's great teams, Don Croppers Classic 60's 70's and 80's...ton's of fun to be had.

When making the SOTS regular season packs we are using a lower compression which cuts the size of the packs in almost half. Lowlight and myself couldn’t hear any difference in fidelity and we are confident we can get all sounds for all teams under the 5gig limit.

With SOTS working as it should (I also did a bit of editing of the tracks I used) it really makes the presentation near perfect. Gameplay is just superb.

I do see a returning problem though. A couple (maybe a few) years ago the pitchers would just reach straight down between their legs on balls hit to their right, or left, making no attempt at fielding them. Appears that may be back as I've yet to see a pitcher stab a relatively hard hit ball, or even mimic that he's reaching to the left or right to even try. Yes, pitchers certainly can't field all of them, but some yes. I've got 8 full franchises games in (as well as several play now games). No problem with dribblers in front of them, and I don't expect them to grab rockets, but certainly some. Maybe I'll have to experiment with REACTION and FIELDING of pitchers to see if that is a remedy. This goes for the CPU and my pitchers (I play on auto field/manual throw).

We'll see, but overall SDS has outdone themselves.

It makes the spectacular plays feel, well spectacular and more exciting and jaw dropping since they happen less frequently.

I had a play in Fenway where Randall Grichuk jumped up against the Green Monster to rob Mookie Betts of a sure fire double. Next game Blake Swihart hits one almost to exactly the same place and too my surprise, delight and frustration, he couldn't make the play this time.
This is the kind of stuff that I hope they DON'T patch out of the game because of people complaining that every ball within 5 miles should be caught by any outfielder or infielder lol
