Re: MLB The Show 18 First Impressions

Saw a good one last night. Batter hit a line drive comebacker that hit the pitcher on the knee, the ball deflected high in the air over to the 1st baseline and while my runner was heading to 1st the catcher ran beside him and caught the ball.

      Kudos SDS

Let me ask you this A&S, what are you thoughts on the fielding? Do you think there is a better balanced/separation between elite/gold glovers and "normal" fielders?
Absolutely. And setting fielder reaction and fielder speed to 3/3 brings out the very best of that, base-runner speed and...the hit variety? Wow man. It is the the secret sauce setting man. Trust me.

I was leading the Pirates 4-2 heading to the bottom of the 9th. We went with Danny Farqhuar to close out the game because I was trying to rest both Rosenthal and Britton. Farqhuar gets Francisco Cervelli to pop out for the first out. He then proceeds to walk Josh Harrison on a missed call by the umpire. Next hitter is rookie Cole Tucker who Farqhuar strikes out on 3 pitches. The Pirates bring in Travis Snider to pinch hit for the pitcher. I decided to roll with Farqhuar instead of getting Britton or Kevin Siegrist, who was warming in the pen. Farqhuar battled Snider for 11 pitches with Snider fouling off some tough pitches. On a 3-2 count I decide to try and catch him off guard by throwing a curveball for the first time in the AB. Unfortunately Farqhuar hangs it and Snider crushes it for a 2 run homerun to tie the game. (I'm pretty sure that ball landed in Canada). I get Siegrist out of the pen to strike out Alen Hanson who came on for an injured Starling Marte to send the game to extra innings.

We played a scoreless 6 up 6 down 10th. In the 11th Stephen Vogt leads off with a double to the right center gap. I replace him with Kolten Wong to run the bases. My initial plan was to have Marwin Gonzalez bunt him to 3rd and take my chances with a pinch hitter and then Tommy Pham at the top of the lineup. Gonzalez takes a strike on a low pitch I thought was out of the zone. After taking a pitch for a ball, he fouls off his second bunt attempt. Down 1-2, Marwin works a 9 pitch AB to draw the walk, putting runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs. I bring in Jon Jay to pinch hit, and the Pirates go get Tony Watson to face him. On the first pitch that Jay sees, he bangs it off the left field wall for a 2 run double! Pirates left Watson in who proceeded to strike out both Pham and Piscotty and got Matt Carpenter to ground out to 2nd.

Up 6-4 I don't screw around and I go get Rosenthal (I don't care if you're tired) to come in and close the game. He strikes out the side using only 11 pitches to clinch a sweep of the Pirates.

        I absolutely love this game!
Amazing synopsis...while reading it I felt like I was in the ball park watching the game unfold!! Great stuff @countryboy!

            Small detail but ...

they've got to get rid of those dirty outfield walls. I could see if it's a rainy game or maybe the Tractor Pull was in town the night before ... or maybe Pigpen is the right fielder?

Just doesn't really seem to work much in their favor is all.
Grichuk from the blue jays swung at 3-0 pitch out of the zone the other day. He proceeded to swing at the 3-1 pitch that was also out of the zone. He then of course, struck out. It would have been loaded bases with no outs and instead they got nothing. Imo it was the real deciding point of the game.

Considering purchasing this one. Does anyone know if you can bat from a pitching camera? Last baseball game I owned was MLB 2k11...here's a video that shows what I used:

^ Yes, you can. SDS has the ball appear very pearly-white and large when you're batting though, so the effect looks kind of weird. You can't disable it, either.

I would love to hit from angle but I don't think I would be able to ignore the opposing catcher setting up behind the plate and signaling pitches. Also good to see you over here would look foward to your thoughts of this year's version of the Show especially since you stated you been away VG baseball for a while.

I did? I only skipped The Show 14.

I may have said I haven't played that much because of work, life, and just catching up with other games when given the opportunity, but I'd always consider myself to be an active baseball gamer.

I love this year's game, especially from a gameplay perspective. There are still dozens of little things even there that I want to see them address, but I am really digging what they have offered us.

As far as your comment regarding signs, I never even thought of that. If they actually go with what the sign says, yeah I wouldn't be able to bear that either.

The opposing catcher doesn’t signal a specific pitch, he puts down 3-5 different signs like with runners on irl.

You can see the pitchers gripe on most behind the back angles though. I use to hit on broadcast view back on '16 but I could never stop myself from peaking at the opposing pitchers gripe.

You’re exactly right. Was watching Tigers-Sox and they were talking about that exact thing coincidentally, and I was like, “ooooohhhh that’s right, it’s not just the signs.”

Nice! That's an automatic buy for me then.

I'm just not a fan of the batter view anymore. Not sure why. Just personal preference.
