Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

With a little over a week left in the regular season the Yankees find themselves with a record of 88-67, good for the second wild card spot. The wild card is our only hope now as we were eliminated from contention in the AL East days ago as Boston clinched the division. We currently possess the second wild card spot and a 2 game lead over the 86-69 Seattle Mariners. We trail Houston for the top wild card spot by two games. Toronto is hanging in there but are more then likely done being 5 games out with such little baseball left.

So far in September we swept Tampa, got swept by a Toronto in 3, somehow lost 2 of 3 to the White Sox, and got swept in 3 by the Angels. Luckily we got it together in time to play Seattle at Safeco as we managed to sweep them in 3 in their own ballpark in a crucial series. Then we took 3 out of 4 from Tampa at the Trop.

That huge skid vs Toronto, Chicago, and LA is what sunk us in the division, Boston seized the opportunity and pulled away with the division. Luckily Seattle has slowed down now losing 7 of their last 10.

As for the rest of the playoff picture, the Indians clinched the Central weeks ago, the Angels have clinched a postseason appearance and hold a 4 game lead over Houston for the West. They’ve caught fire at the right time with a 9-1 record in their last 10, including a huge 3 game sweep of the rival Astros.

In the NL East the Nationals are still fighting off the Phillies, they hold a 2 game lead over Philly. The Cubs likely have the Central locked up, they hold a 5 game lead over St Louis. The Dodgers have clinched the NL West.

Not much last minute drama in the division races but the NL Wild Card still has plenty to offer. The Phillies and Giants occupy the spots with Philly holding a one game lead over SF for the top spot. The Rockies and Cardinals are right behind them fighting for October baseball both being just 1 game back. The Mets remain alive on the fringe of the race trailing by 4.5 games, with having to catch and pass at least 3 teams in such a small amount of time, the odds certainly aren’t in their favor.

We end the season with off a 4 game series vs Boston then a 3 game series vs Tampa, all at home. The Rays have been a great punching bag for us this month, we hold a 5-1 record against them this month. Though the Red Sox have already clinched the East they still have home field advantage left to play for with the Angels only trailing them by 2 wins. They will surely also be hungry to ensure their arch rival doesn’t get home field advantage in the wild card game if not potentially bounce them from the playoff picture as well.

Rumors have started to emerge that Don Mattingly could possibly be managing for his job as Yankees manager despite being only in the first season of a 3 year contract. It’s thought that failure to reach the postseason will not be tolerated. Falling short of the postseason a year after winning 107 games and the WS would certainly be a devastating outcome. A wild card appearance is expected to be enough to save Mattingly’s job for at least one more season.

Injuries continue to shake up Cardinals roster

With Sam Freeman (shoulder) and Jack Flaherty (back) already on the DL, the Cardinals added two more. Dean Kiekhefer (back issues) and Carlos Martinez (broken forearm) were both added to the DL as the Cardinals have now placed 4 of their opening day 25 man roster onto the DL in the first 8 games. Dean Kiekhefer was added after complaining of back pain. He was placed on the 10 Day DL. Carlos Martinez was drilled by a comebacker that broke his right forearm and has landed him on the 60 Day DL. The Cardinals do not expect Martinez back until around the All-Star Break. The Cardinals are 2-6 on the season and are currently on a 4 game losing streak. These injuries and shaking up the roster this early will only make getting back to winning and consistency more difficult.

Joe Kelly was recalled from Memphis to fill the void in the bullpen. Kyle Funkhouser had his contract selected and was added to the 25 man roster to take Carlos Martinez's rotation spot. When Flaherty returns its expected that Funkhouser will be optioned back to Memphis.

Sam Freeman is back...Joe Kelly optioned to Memphis

Sam Freeman has been activated from the 10 Day DL after landing there due to shoulder pain. In a corresponding move, Joe Kelly was optioned back to Memphis since he has already cleared waivers. Freeman struggled early this season, but the hope is that he will return to his old form now that he's rested his arm/shoulder. The Cardinals need him back in the pen as they only had Tyler Lyons as a left handed option.

Joe Kelly will be back in Memphis where he is accepting a new role, closer. With Zack Burdi being demoted to Springfield due to lack of production (0 for 3 in save opportunities with all 3 resulting in loses), the Redbirds needed someone they could rely on. So Joe Kelly will get the opportunity.

Cardinals look to right the ship here as they are currently 3-7 on the young season. They just snapped a 4 game losing streak, but lost to the Brewers in the first game of a 3 game series. Cardinals are playing inconsistent baseball right now.

People knock franchise mode for a variety of reasons, but man, you have to give credit to the developers for making this mode playable for multiple years. I'm amazed at how differently my games played have turned out from Year 1 to Year 2, with almost the same roster. Guys that were on fire Year 1 have been mired in slumps in Year 2, while those that were just meh have blossomed into All-Star-caliber players. The same holds true for the CPU-controlled teams.

That variety helps keeps the games feel fresh. You never know what's going to unfold out on the virtual diamond, and I love that about this game.

I agree. Won the WS and 107 games year 1 in my Yankees franchise and in year 2 with basically the same roster except it’s Harper instead of Machado in year 2, the team is struggling to make the wild card.

The regular season has concluded, now it’s on to October. The Yankees managed to hold off the Seattle Mariners so they are now on to the Wild Card game. We finished with a record of 93-69.

                  NL Wild Card:

                  Phillies 90-72.

                  Playoff Preview:

NL Wild Card Game Phillies @ Giants.
Jake Arrieta (2.64 ERA) Vs Johnny Cueto (2.43 ERA).

                  ALDS Indians Vs Angels.
Indians and Angels will face off in a rematch of last year’s ALDS. Indians will be looking for revenge after being swept in that series.

                  ALDS: Red Sox Vs TBD

                  NLDS Nationals @ Cubs.
No Harper, no problem. Nats are back in the postseason fresh off another division title. Can they finally get over the hump? Cubs should face a great challenge vs a stacked Nationals rotation featuring Scherzer, Strasburg, Keuchel, Gonzalez, and Eovaldi.

                  NLDS: Dodgers Vs TBD.

Finally, The AL Wild Card Game.
Yankees Vs Astros. A rematch of last seasons ALDS. These two collide again, could certainly say it’s a rivalry at this point. A bunch of recent history with these two squads, a WC game several years ago that Houston won, an ALCS matchup that Houston won in 7, an ALDS matchup that the Yankees won in 5, now they meet again.

The Yankees barely managed to capture home field advantage for this one.

Luis Severino Vs Gerrit Cole @ Yankee Stadium.
Severino takes the mound as the Yankees try to keep their title defense alive. It was a bit of a tough decision, was tempted to go with Wacha.

                  Astros Lineup:
                  1 2B Jose Altuve
                  2 LF Michael Brantley
                  3 SS Carlos Correa
                  4 CF George Springer
                  5 3B Alex Bregman
                  6 RF Josh Reddick
                  7 C JT Realmuto
                  8 1B Jonathan Singleton
                  9 DH Jake Marisnick

                  Astros Bullpen:
                  LRP Collin McHugh
                  MRP Brad Peacock
                  MRP Hector Rondon
                  MRP Buddy Boshers
                  SU Chris Devenski
                  SU Will Harris
                  CP Ken Giles

Side note, on the second to last day of the season we claimed SP Eduardo Rodriguez off waivers from the Red Sox. They DFA’d him then placed him on waivers. His season has been shortened due to injury, holding him to only 64 IP. He hasn’t been that effective when healthy pitching to a 4.22 ERA. He did pitch to a 3.60 ERA in a full season with Boston in 2018 though. Jumped at the chance to acquire him for nothing when they placed him on waivers.

He’s a 25 year old lefty, definitely still has potential. 83 OVR. He’s under contract for the next 2 seasons at 4M per year. Not bad at all. He has been added to the playoff roster, RP Sean Gilmartin has been left off.

                    STANDINGS
                    Spoiler

                    OVERVIEW
The White Sox look poised to defend their 2022 World Series victory as this years team is out performing last years team.

With one month to go in the regular season, the Sox would have to have a historical melt down while the Indians would have to have a near flawless October in order for the Sox to not win the AL Central crown.

Michael Conforto (.270 AVG/38 HR/104 RBI) is having a career year and currently leads the AL mvp race with team mate and last years winner Rhys Hoskins (.312 AVG/38 HR/87 RBI) in third place. In between them is the 28 year old second baseman Willie Calhoun (.281 AVG/35 HR/102 RBI) of the Texas Rangers.

The Cy Young is also White Sox heavy with Stephen Gonsalves (14-4/2.77 ERA/161 SO) leading the way with fellow White Sox Carlos Martinez (14-7/3.23 ERA/173 SO) in second. Third place belongs to the Blue Jay's Chris Sale (13-7/2.93 ERA/173 SO) who has won the award the past two seasons.

Casey Gillaspie (30 YO 84 OVR 1B) was called up to the major league team in mid July while Enrique Cruz (25 YO 78 OVR 1B) was sent down to AAA. Gillaspie has performed well since being called up and has helped to defensively as well (71 fielding VS 58 fielding). Cruz is likely still the 1B for the future but the club felt like he could improve a bit more while the team got what they could out of Gillaspie.

September will see the Sox look to solidify themselves as the #1 seed throughout the playoffs.

                    PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
Michael Conforto 30 year old 89 OVR LF

                    Career Stats
                    954 Games played/550 Runs/899 Hits/221 HR/585 RBI/.265 AVG

Michael Conforto came over to the White Sox in 2018 via a trade. Since he has joined the team, he has struggled with injuries. This led him to play in under 100 games in 19,20 and 21.

This year has been different however and with a month left in the season, he already has a career high in home runs (38) and RBI (104) his average is also above his career average. He leads the AL mvp race although he has hit a bit of a slump recently.

Conforto joins other team stars (Rhys Hoskins and Yoan Moncada) as free agents in the upcoming off season. It will most definitely be a tall task to bring all of them back. The White Six will have an interesting offseason for sure. But before that, they are looking to win their second World Series in a row.

Our bullpen continues to be a sore spot on this team, something I never would've guessed at the start of the season. Through 12 games, the bullpen has accounted for 6 blown saves. The only two guys that I can really count on are Jordan Walden and John Brebbia, both guys at the end of last season, and during the offseason, I didn't know, in Walden's case expect, would be on the team for the 2021 season. But thankfully they are here and doing their best to patch up a bullpen that is leaking runs and leads everywhere.

Kyle Funkhouser made his MLB debut starting for injured Jack Flaherty and it was horrendous. Funkhouser only lasted 3 innings, giving up 5 runs on 9 hits and walking 6. Thankfully double plays got him out of serious jams in all three innings. Funkhouser has since been optioned back to Memphis. Now I'm second guessing letting Alex Reyes go.

We are 3-9 thru 12 games and already 6 games out of first as the Cubs are hot. I honestly didn't expect this as I thought we would be a team that consistently wins 7 out of 10 games. We have yet to win a series and were just swept by the Brewers who were expected to finish last in the Central this year. So far this year we are 1-5 against them.

I know teams go through slumps, but damn this is a rough start to a season that coming in I thought we would have a better than good chance to win the NL pennant. Right now, we are tied with the Reds for last in the division.

150 more games to turn things around.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

I'm 60 games into the Braves dynasty I rebooted back in August, so I'm a bit behind. But we're 37-23 and tied for first with the Nats in the East. The Mets are lurking 6.5 GB.

Freeman has cooled off a tad, but still has a league-leading 21 HRs and 47 RBIs.

I wanted to add a backup 1B/corner OF to the bench. Tried to sign Logan Morrison and Lucas Duda, but I couldn't get them to bite. Finally acquired Eric Thames from the Brewers. So far, so good. In just two games, he's hitting 4-for-6 with three homers and six RBIs. The plan now is to platoon him with Lane Adams in left (Acuna doesn't exist in my universe).

One oddity: I just finished up a series with the Nats and now start one with the Padres. Joe Ross started the final game for Washington. Tyson Ross starts the first game for San Diego.

                            2018 Oakland A’s Fantasy Franchise

                            7/16: ALL STAR BREAK

We head to the break going strong with an 8-2 road trip to bring our record to a MLB best 65-32 including a 17.0 game lead in the AL West. The rest of the division has been pretty terrible so without a catastrophic collapse we should be cruising the rest of the way and be able to focus our efforts towards solidifying our playoff roster.

Krush Davis heads to the break batting .310, 55 HR, 99 RBI. He leads the way in MVP voting and received the highest amount of votes for the All-Star game. Bellinger having a massive year as well, .318(2nd AL), 40 HR(2nd AL), 96 RBI(2nd AL) and 2nd in MVP race. Harper is at .289, 34 HR(3rd AL), 70 RBI(T-6th AL). Ohtani is batting .304, 16 HR, 27 RBI and 18 SB in just under half the ABs of my other stars. I usually bat him first when I start him at DH or I use him to pinch hit.

As far as pitching goes Ohtani leads the league in wins(13-5, 2.99 ERA) and leads the league in Ks(190). He leads the AL in the Cy young race and also for ROY, Michael Kopech is 2nd(12-2, 2.57 ERA). Jordan Hicks leads the league with 36 saves, despite blowing 6, which is a little concerning. Hopefully he can tighten things back up as we head towards the final 3rd of the season.

Well, the Yankees season is officially over as they fell to the Astros 6-4 in the wild card game. Can’t believe it.

It started off very well and I was feeling pretty good about our chances as after 2 innings we were up 2-0 off a Stanton base hit RBI and a Didi solo HR. In the 3rd Realmuto got the Astros on the board with a solo shot. What lost us the game was the 5th inning. Astros had runners on second and third 1 out. Pulled Sevy and Siegrist entered the game and the pitch he threw, a fastball, was launched into the seats by Jake Marisnick. 3 run HR. 4-2 Astros. Houston added on another in the 7th. Correa hit a solo HR in the 8th. 6-2 Astros. Things were looking bleak.

Then Judge and Stanton hit back to back solo shots off Hector Rondon in the bottom of the 8th energizing the stadium and giving us hope. Chapman tossed a scoreless frame in the 9th to send us to the bottom half. 6-4 Astros.

One last chance. Cruz and Didi quickly went down. Gleyber Torres up with the season on the line. He managed to draw a walk off Astros closer Ken Giles to bring the tying run to the plate in Miguel Andujar, Harper looming on deck as the winning run. Unfortunately their would be no late game heroics tonight. Andujar struck out on a high outside 3-2 count slider that painted the black from Giles.

Game over, season over, as Houston advances to the ALDS to take on the Boston Red Sox. Time to begin preparing for the offseason and decide Mattingly’s fate.

Game 3 Nationals Win 8-9 scoring 2 runs in 9th.

                              Game 2 Cubs Win 9-5.

                              Cubs sweep series 4-0.

Pretty much the expected result. On paper the Cubs are a much superior team and are stacked with talent. The Cubs squad brings a lot more postseason experience to the table then Philly.

Schwarber launches a 2 run bomb in the 3rd putting Chicago up 4-0. LA scores 1 in the 4th.
4-1 Cubs. Schwarber doubles in the 7th putting Chicago up 7-1 leaving the Angel stadium crowd silenced and shocked. Ian Happ adds more cushion in the 9th hitting a solo shot. 8-1 Cubs.

2 outs in the 9th runner on first, Calhoun at bat for LA. Calhoun hits it hard and deep to center! Almora goes back and makes the catch! Cubs Win it in 7 games!

The Cubs are your 2019 World Series Champions! Well done by Chicago, lost in 7 in 2018 and got back there the next year and got the job done.

Won the first game of the Rays series yesterday 1-0 with a Walk-Off-Hit from Aledmys Diaz in the 9th inning which brought home pinch runner Victor Victor. My only both hits of the game came in the 9th and were enough to win the game.
The Yankees continue to struggle and are now 2-8 through the last 10 games.
