Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

Pheww!!! Been a while since I posted here. Gaming hasn't been too much of a priority for a long time but have been playing The Show pretty regularly the last couple months.

After a long layoff I came back to my Rangers franchise and played pretty well getting back into the swing of things building and held a 4 game lead over the Astros for first place.

But over the last 11 games we've really struggled offensively. In those 11 games we've gone 4-7 and have only scored more than 1 run in an inning 3 times and in the last 82 innings we've only put a crooked number up once. Also in that stretch we've been in double digits in strikeouts in 8 of those 11 games with a high of 16.

Somehow we've held on to 1.5 game lead as the Astros haven't been much better. Only in the middle of June so still a long ways to go.

Hope everyone has been doing well and enjoying The Show!!

Cardinals place Dylan Carlson on 60 Day IL

The Cardinals have lost yet another key contributor to the team as they have placed OF Dylan Carlson on the 60 Day IL due to a broken wrist.

Carlson suffered the injury last night in Pittsburgh as he crashed into the wall making a catch on a ball hit by Ke’Bryan Hayes.

Carlson was hitting .258 with 5 homers and 32 RBI on the year. He also has flashed the leather this year in both left field and center field.

Connor Capel was recalled from Memphis to fulfill the vacant roster spot. It’s expected he will hold the spot until Jose Adolis Garcia returns from the IL in a week.

Cardinals have a decision to make as trade deadline is a month away

The trade deadline is about a month away (33 days actually) and the Cardinals have a decision to make in the coming weeks as to whether they will be buyers, sellers, or stand pat and ride out the season.

The Cardinals are currently 41-43 on the season and trail the Brewers by 10 games in the Central division and trail in the wildcard standings by 7 1/2 games behind division rivals Cubs and Reds.

On paper, the Cardinals have/had the roster to compete for the pennant. On the field, they are struggling to stay out of the Central division basement. The Cardinals have never found their groove this year and just can't seem to get any better than 1 game above .500 on the season. And now with injuries (Juan Fabregas out for the year, Patrick Wisdom out until September, Dylan Carlson out until August/September) the Cardinals just seem to be running out of steam, and its only June.

If the Cardinals buy into the fact that they can turn things around after the break and get back into the races, then they could be buyers at the deadline where they would likely seek outfield depth due to injuries and bullpen depth. They play enough games against the Brewers, Cubs, and Reds that its not impossible they climb back into the races and they have enough prospects to get quality help.

If the Cardinals decide to concede the race, then they have players that could bring back a healthy dose of prospects to make a run next year. Possible trade candidates for the Cardinals:

        * Carlos Martinez (final year)
        * Carson Kelly (final year_
        * Harrison Bader (3 years of team control left)
        * Ozzie Albies (4 years left on contract)
        * Trevor Rosenthal (actually has 3 years left on contract)

Any of these 5 players would easily bring back quality prospects, that the Cardinals could put with the young core they have and easily make a run next year.

If the Cardinals stand pat, then they could still look to make a run with the bodies they have and hope to get lucky enough to reach the postseason, or be in the race in September when they hopefully get healthy again. This team has the talent to win the pennant, but again, they just can't seem to get going in the right direction.

The Cardinals have 33 days until deadline and plenty of time to re-evaluate where they are in the standings when the deadline is closer, but for now the Cardinals front office is weighing its options, even with a month until the deadline.

Tough decision to make. Give it 2 weeks and see where you're at and develop a plan from there.

Cardinals go 14-13 in June, 43-44 overall

The Cardinals finished the month of June with a 14-13 record to improve their overall record to 43-44, which puts them 4th in the Central and 10 games behind the Brewers. They are currently 7 games behind the Cubs and Reds in the wildcard race.

The Cardinals continue to deal with two issues that have been prevalent all season long, injuries and inconsistent bullpen.

June saw the Cardinals lose Jack Flaherty for a few starts, Patrick Wisdom and Dylan Carlson until September.

It also saw Mike Matheny make a change in the closer role with Trevor Rosenthal being replaced by Roberto Osuna. They DFA'd Andrew Miller and optioned both Jordan Hicks and Mike Mayers to Memphis due to inconsistency.

The bright spot for the Cardinals has been the reunion with both Stephen Piscotty and Paul DeJong. Piscotty is hitting .293 overall and has provided a spark in the #5 spot in the lineup helping the Cardinals offense generate runs.

Paul DeJong has taken over the everyday 3rd base duties after the injury to Wisdom and is hitting .271 with 5 homeruns and 18 RBI's. He's also been solid defensively.

The Cardinals will head into the final weekend before the All-Star Break by finishing up a 4 game series in Pittsburgh on Thursday, and then travelling to Chicago to face the Cubs in a 3 game weekend series that could go a long way into how the Cardinals approach the trade deadline.

Offensive woes continued for the Rangers over the New Years break as we ran into a buzz saw in Fenway and lost 3 out of 4 to the Red Sox.

We bounced back and took our frustration out on the Reds in game 1 of a 3 game series. Winning 9-4 and hitting 5 bombs with 2 coming from Rougned Odor who's having breakout season and currently 3rd in the batting title race.

Somehow we still have a 1.5 game lead in the AL West.

Cardinals listening to offers for Ozzie Albies

The Cardinals are reportedly open to hearing offers on 26 year old Ozzie Albies.

Albies who came to the Cardinals in a trade with the Twins 2 seasons ago, has struggled offensively in his time in St.Louis. He was also the center of a heated trading of words between himself and manager Mike Matheny that season he was acquired, but things seemed to be better last year when the Cardinals signed him to a long term deal. But now, it appears that Albies could be on his way to the 4th team of his young career.

Albies is currently hitting just .215 for the Cardinals with 10 homeruns and 40 RBI's. His glove work is impeccable, but his offensive struggles, especially his high strikeout percentage (21.4%) has manager Mike Matheny and now the front office considering that this experiment just isn't going to work out for either side.

While Albies is still owed $54M over 3 years ($18M per year), there will be no shortage of interested trade partners for the 26 year old's services.

Whether this is the start of the Cardinals moving players to acquire younger prospects, or if this is simply a move made out of the thought process that things just aren't working out with Albies in St.Louis remains to be seen.

The Cardinals have a big 3 game series with the Cubs this weekend where they could potentially get themselves back into the playoff chase.

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

With 2 games to go before we head into July the Yankees sit at 60-25, 1st place in the East by 7.5 games over the Red Sox. In our latest stretch of games we took 2 out of 3 from the Royals and swept Seattle in 3. After we knocked Boston down with a 3 game sweep at Fenway it’s been taking them a bit to get back up as they dropped 3 of 4 to Texas and 2 of 3 to Tampa. All at Fenway. You hate to see it.

Over the past few games, the rival Rays struck a deal with the Cubs.
Rays Trade: RP Diego Castillo and SS Andrew Velazquez
                  Cubs Trade: SS Addison Russell.

We already have Brandon Crawford in the AL East as a Blue Jay. Not too excited to see another great defensive SS coming over.

Edwin Encarnacion is now due back in just 2-3 weeks. We called up Troy Tulowitzki to replace him on the roster and he’s been awful at the plate in the limited action he’s seen but he’ll likely remain on the roster until EE’s return.

                  Top performing Yankees:
                  Aaron Judge: 315/380/759/1.139. 39 HR’s and 85 RBI’s.
                  Miguel Andujar: 339/391/657/1.048. 21 HR’s and 74 RBI’s.
Jordan Montgomery: 2.74 ERA, 1.22 WHIP
James Paxton 3.13 ERA, 1.14 WHIP.
Sean Doolittle 1.26 ERA, 0.84 WHIP.
Andrew Miller 1.77 ERA, 0.89 WHIP.

Next up, 3 games at home vs Toronto to take us into July. Then a big 4 game series with the Red Sox coming to town to close out a huge first half for us and take us into the All Star Break. Those 4 games could already play a key role in deciding the division. If we play well again, we could open up a double digit division lead.

                  News:
Division Leads Getting Out Of Hand All Across MLB:
The Yankees lead is 7.5 games, Astros lead the West by 10.5, Braves lead the East by 8.5 games, and Cubs lead the Central by 8 games,

Very Weak AL Central: The Indians have been running this division for a while now, but they’ve crumbled this season with a 37-45 record yet sit just 3.5 games behind first place. And no has stepped up as not a single Central team has a winning record. The last place Tigers are only 5.5 games out. None of these teams deserve to play in October, but unfortunately one of them has to.

Cardinals sweep Cubs for 5th straight win

The Cardinals swept the Cubs over the final weekend before the All-Star Break to win their 5th straight and move to within 4 games of the 2nd wildcard position.

The Cardinals did it with offense as they scored a whopping 33 runs in this series (12, 10, 11 respectively), and their pitching was on point, especially the bullpen which pitched 8 total innings of 3 hit, 1 run baseball.

This series win, and winning 5 straight, puts the Cardinals in a better mindset heading to the break as they are now in discussion for the playoffs and changes the front office's approach to the trade deadline.

The Cardinals will open up the 2nd half of the season at home versus the Rockies.

                    July schedule:

                    3 vs COL

Nolan Gorman and Ryan Helsley selected to Futures Game

3B Nolan Gorman and starting RHP Ryan Helsley have been selected to play in the Futures Game on Sunday in Tampa Bay, the site of the 2024 All-Star Game.

Nolan Gorman who was promoted from AA Springfield to AAA Memphis in mid May is hitting .366 with 8 homeruns and 47 RBI's in that time frame. Gorman is expected to be the replacement for Patrick Wisdom at 3B. Wisdom has one year left on his contract and Cardinals are hoping to get Gorman to play a full season at the AAA level before calling him up to the Show.

Ryan Helsley has pitched at Memphis all season and is 10-3 with a 3.21 ERA and a WHIP of 1.09. Helsley is also second in strikeouts in the Pacific Coast League with 118. Helsley is expected to get a crack at the rotation next Spring as the Cardinals expect some vacancies. He may even get a call to pitch out the bullpen this year if things continue to be unstable in that area.

My Reds keep battling. We were 15 games under .500 in June and engineered some deals that helped get us on-track. Lead by NL MVP (and Triple Crown winner) Scooter Gennett, we tied with the Cubs for first in the NL Central, lost game 163, played the Phils in the WC and won. Well, it keeps on going.

After winning a tough 5 game series vs the Dodgers in the NLDS, we faced the Cubs in the NLCS. It was a hard fought series with 4 of 5 games decided by 2 runs or less, but we prevailed in a 4-1 series win.

Our next task, facing the mighty Houston Astros in the World Series. Houston knocked off the upstart Oakland A's in 6 games and we will now do battle for all the marbles. Game 1 will feature the Reds Madison Bumgarner vs Gerritt Cole.
Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.

Game 1 was a battle. We worked Gerritt Cole really hard, drawing 5 walks and ratcheting his pitch count up early and often but were unable to deliver a knockout blow. The Astros countered with a couple of solid innings and we lost game 1 5-2.

Game 2 started off well. Scooter hit a solo shot in the first inning. But after a masterful first 4 innings by Marcus Stroman, the Astros started hitting us hard. My usually stout bullpen was shaky but kept it close. We were down 6-3 in the 9th, Suarez hit a 2 run shot to draw us to within a run but our rally came up short in a 6-5 loss.

The series shifts back to Cincy for game 3 as we hope to hold serve at home with Verlander going for the 'Stros (not an easy task). This is a team that always responded well to adversity this season, so I think we still have a chance to rebound - but things are looking a bit bleak right now.

The 2020 season has reached the All Star Break. The Dodgers (65-25) currently sit at first in the NL West with a 14 game lead on the Rockies (51-39) and the best record in baseball. They look to be on pace to win an 8th straight Division Title, hopefully this year culminating in a World Series win after falling in 7 games to Angels in 2019. Pitching continues to be the Dodgers major strength while the bench players are a major weakness when filling in. With the Trade Deadline looming the front office is looking to move Joc Pederson, but has turned down trade offers from both the Giants and the Padres.

Currently division leaders are Red Sox (64-28), Indians (55-36), Angels (59-35), Phillies (53-36) and Cubs (55-36).

The American League won the All Star Game by a score of 9-1. Selections for the Dodgers included C. Kershaw, K. Jansen, M. Chapman, C. Seager, C. Bellinger and M. Muncy.

Three Dodgers prospects were selected as starters in the Futures Game:
                              1B- Eric McCarty
                              C- Crash Davis
                              3B- Landon Casey

Five Prospects were selected to represent the Dodgers with the Pacific Coast League All Stars:
                              CF- A. Verdugo
                              SS- G. Lux
                              C- C. Moore
                              SP- J. Hubbard
                              CP- C. Murillo

                              Rotation:
                              C. Kershaw, 9-3, 2.07
                              C. Stern, 11-3, 2.80
                              W. Buehler, 5-2, 2.50
                              R. Stripling, 10-2, 2.80
                              J. Urias, 9-3, 2.89

                              Pen:
                              Y. Sierra, 7-4, 3.43

Re: MLB The Show 19 Franchise Discussion Thread

After being swept in the World Series by the Astros, my Reds moved into the 2019-2020 offseason.

Much of our "offseason" building actually occurred during the regular season as many of the moves we made were forward-thinking and focused more on the future rather than a "win now". Frankly speaking, the goal for 2019 was to compete for the playoffs, but we not only did that, but got hot enough to carry momentum through the playoffs.

So, with the majority of the starting lineup and pitching staff in good shape, we had the following goals:

                                1. Improve the catching situation.
                                2. Improve the bench
                                3. Find a lefty starter to fill the number 5 spot
                                4. Find a lefty reliever (while we have 2 good ones now, I prefer having 3 in the bullpen)

So, this is what we did (I'm not in front of system, so I have no numbers):

                                1. Signed Tyler Flowers to be our starting catcher. Yasmani Grandal was a tempting target, but we wanted to be budget-conscious and Flowers represented a solid, if unspectacular, upgrade. Last year's starter, Yan Gomes, will be relegated to bench duty.
                                2. We made hay in filling our bench. We signed Josh Harrison, Jedd Gyorko, Kevin Pillar, and Ronald Torreyes all to short-term deals. Harrison will serve as a utility IF, Gyroko as a power righty off the bench who can fill in several spots (and may platoon a bit with Votto/Scooter), and Pillar will platoon in LF with Scott Schebler and serve as a solid defensive replacement. Torreyes may spend some time in the minors, depending on whether or not we keep a young Rule 5 pick on the roster. The bench will also be complemented by holdover lefty slugger Daniel Palka, who hit 20 HRs in limited duty last season. While the bench consists of a lot of aging vets, they give us a chance to develop a number of younger prospects in 2020.
                                3. While not a need, I wanted to have another lefty starter to pair with Madison Bumgarner. We snagged former Colorado SP Tyler Anderson to a 1 year deal. He had a solid 2019 in Coors field and I think he could be a solid number 5 for us.
                                4. I love having good lefties in the bullpen and we're in great shape with Amir Garrett and Jose Alvarado already in the bullpen. But, we overpayed slightly in negotiating a deal with Baltimore to acquire lefty flamethrower Tanner Scott.

We still have a lot of financial flexibility to make deals, if needed, but this is a team I feel pretty good about.

The projected 26 man roster looks like this (subject to change based on ST)

                                C - Tyler Flowers
                                1B - Joey Votto
2B - Scooter Gennett (who will be defending his Triple Crown)
                                3B - Eugenio Suarez
                                SS - Brandon Crawford
                                LF - Scott Schebler
CF - Floyd Ivey (I use SDS rosters and he was a AAA guy in the one I used...Ivey is a contact-hitting CF with very good speed/fielding)
                                RF - Randall Grichuk

I Bash Righties - Daniel Palka
I Bash Lefties - Jedd Gyorko
                                (F)utility IF - Josh Harrison
Defensive OF - Kevin Pillar (he'll also platoon with Schebler)
                                Backup C - Yan Gomes
26th man - up for grabs, but it WILL be a position player

                                SP - Madison Bumgarner
                                SP - Luis Castillo
                                SP - Marcus Stroman
                                SP - Tanner Roark
                                SP - Tyler Anderson

LRP - Yonny Chirinos (I use Yonny for a lot of purposes - he'll see ~150 IP)
                                MRP - Tanner Scott
                                MRP - Kyle Barraclough
                                MRP - Jose Alvarado
                                SU - Amir Garrett
                                SU - Ryne Stanek
                                CL - Craig Kimbrel

So, this is not a "sexy" team by any means, but I think we're good enough (on paper) to get back to the playoffs. We're going to again be a station-to-station team, with only Ivey representing a significant speed threat. We'd had hoped to get a faster backup OF than Pillar but the handful of those available were quite one-dimensional and Pillar checked a lot of other boxes for us. I also tried to find left-handed basher that could actually be OK in the OF, but none met the power potential of Palka, so we're going to have to live with his abysmal defense if he plays the field.

I also spent a fair bit of time evaluating our minor league system and grabbing some low-cost guys that might be able to play roles ("D" potential guys in their late 20s can be excellent bargains to fill out AAA and allow prospects to develop down in AA).

---From a "gamer" perspective, this was an off-season that really allowed me to scratch that "I want to be a GM and tinker" itch while staying true to the core of this roster and allowing me to follow storylines. I think we all have a tendency of making a bunch of "splashy" moves (and I did that in Year 1) but it can also be immersion-breaking as you can quickly lose that continuity of storylines. I don't need to "look up stats" to see what 2/3 of my roster did last year...I already know...because I was right there with them through every single pitch.

I'm still debating about starting year 2 now or waiting for MLB20 to drop....but I have a feeling I am going to just start it and carry it over whenever the game launches.
