Overall a great game.
Anybody else noticing a lot of double plays? The ground balls seem to happen exactly when the situation warrants it.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread
I posted this in another thread, my biggest issue is on HOF default, I'm hitting home runs at far too high of a pace. For me it seems no matter the ratings of the CPU pitcher, they are making way too many mistake pitches down the heart of the plate. I think from a slider perspective raising CPU pitcher control and consistency will probably help, but haven't tried it yet.
Also if you play MTO, sliders don't help. Other than the game has been fabulous for me.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread
Just finished my first play now game. Right away I thought the game wasn't very bright. I have a 4K HDR TV so I turned on HDR mode and man, it got even darker. I messed around with balanced, faster and sharper but it didn't make any difference. I turned off HDR and the game got brighter. Not sure if this is a bug or whatever but does anyone else notice the game is darker days supposed to be? Every other PS4 game or other console games I play are fine but so far, this game is dark.
I even fired up MLB 17 and 19 and they are both not as dark as 20 is.
I'm still really annoyed that the game calls them the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim when they haven't been called that in years. They are simply the Los Angeles Angels now.
I'm also annoyed that SDS still hasn't put in the Honda Center or train station in the background.
I have no idea how those things keep being ignored year after year. Oh and there were absolutely no clouds in the sky but I was playing in the daytime in April so maybe that has something to do with it.
I did enjoy the game other than that though. Nice new animations and gameplay feels tight. Still trying to figure out if all of the same options in 19 are in 20 regarding how I play the game.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread
I had to come on here and just mention how really good this game is. The frame rate is much much better than last year and I even think better than 18. Playing when it is just so smooth like that adds another level of enjoy-ability. Everything just feels so clean and the pitcher-batter interface just feels much more polished. Faced Kopech last night and he was just bringing 101 mph heat! Was tough but so rewarding to hit off of him. Going to be a very fun year!!! Good job SDS on all the refinements...... especially the frame rate!Comment

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread
Once again this game just gets better and better the more I play it. So many subtle tweaks and changes throughout the gameplay that together as a whole really stand out and separate this year's title from last year's.
And again, '20 offers such a variety of games that it feels "fresh" each time, although granted sample size is considerably small at this point. But I had a game with the Astros where both teams combined to hit 7 homeruns, which was more homeruns hit in the first 5 games I played. I thought it was the patch. Nope..the next 3 games has tallied just a single homerun (I've hit 0). The new mechanics to hitting along with the changes to defense have really opened up the variety even more.
And I am absolutely in love with pitching this year as the swing and miss rate has increased (nothing drastic and nothing given) if you're able to keep hitters off balance and change their vision. I bet, probably hyperbole but bear with me, that I've blown more fastballs by a hitter for a 3rd strike in the handful of games I've played in '20 versus that of '19. Ok...again that's probably an exaggeration but the point still stands.
The only thing right now that I'm keeping an eye on and may submit feedback to SDS, is I think that fielders, even elite fielders, are a step slow in reacting. I'm seeing more seeing eye singles than I feel should be happening and outfielders seem a step slow when tracking down flyballs or balls in the gap. Again, I'm not ready to say that it needs to be tweaked but it has my attention.
Other than that, the gameplay is simply, and as usual, outstanding this year. Kudos to SDS for once again delivering not only a great simulation on the diamond, but also a damn fun game to play.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I don’t know why not having the Honda center in the background would affect your realism of the game. The Stadiums look better than ever to me.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread
Okay, a couple new thoughts with three more test games under my belt-
Up until my last game, I had not won a game (in seven), nor did I have a home run. Well, that all changed at 10:05pm EST last evening.
I have been dabbling with zone hitting, having been a Directional guy for years, but with the new mechanic, I wanted to give it a try.
I have also always used the Offset 2 camera for hitting. But I was struggling so bad, I decided that I would change to a view that gave me a better view from down lower, to combat the filthy change ups that have tortured me each game.
After making that switch, I erupted for six homeruns, and at least five Perfect/Perfect hits, giving me the fuel to make my first win, and really get a better handle on the zone hitting.
The question will be, as CB mentioned above, was that the "Variable Stuff" kind of thing that the game leans towards before the game even starts, as part of the dice-roll advantage and ebb and flow programmed in prior to the first pitch.
I am still under the impression there may be some sort of "tilt" or slant that the game trends towards, and I discussed this last year, by playing one inning test games, keeping pitchers and lineups the same, and seeing the sheer dichotomy between ten restarts. Some games your pitchers was just nails, throwing strikes at his whim, and dotting corners and pitching to an almost un-hittable level. But then, on the restart, he can't find a strike to save his life, and he gives up five hits and three runs. Same with defense. It seems some games, your fielders are destined to have a rough day, and there are multiple errors, and some games, they play cleanly and make spectacular plays, and no rhyme or reason for either.
If this is the case, I love it, as that is how baseball is... some days man... some days...
I hope I have not unlocked the key to zone hitting, as the strategy I employed last night had me hitting everything in sight, and with great contact. If my next 3-5 games show me dominating the system, I can always change back to my old (harder) camera view, and see if that tempers the offense. I like that during my testing phase, I have different avenues to pursue to make the game more or less challenging.
Now, back to impressions:
* Fielding is awesome, and I LOVE that I am hanging on every throw in the infield, but if I concentrate on where on the stick I need to make sure I aim for, more often that not, I am going to make the good throw. Rating totally matter this year, and when the new roster and re-rates make the scene, this will be even more dynamic.
* No hiccups for me on the regular PS4, and very little frame rate issues. Much better than last year.
* Momentum is HUUUGE this year. Don't try and play with the CPU by bluffing to the next base, as you just cannot turn around on a dime this year. Same with the outfielders. If you read the ball wrong, and start heading one way, the time to reset your feet and change direction will kill you. I love this. Plan your route to the ball very carefully, or a triple or worse is headed your way.
* CPU baserunning aggression is awesome this year. At least I have a chance to throw a guy out, and at least I don't know the outcome this year. Last year, if they sent the runner, he was safe.
* Zone hitting makes this a new game for me. I like how each batter, based on ratings, let's you know his strengths, and what he should try to accomplish at the plate, based on those ratings. Trying to power hit with your second baseman with a fly ball marker the size of a pencil point is not good coaching. Move the line, and wait for your big bopper to get up there and try and go for liftoff. Very cool.
* I am seeing new animations every game, and the mo-cap they were able to capture for just the natural movements, and quirks of real baseball is evident. Very much awesome.
* I saw a guy peel off towards right field on a sure front end of a double play. Like, gave himself up and headed out of the baseline. Pretty sure I have never seen that before.
* Perfect/Perfect bat contact sound on the Dolby Home Theatre is just glorious.
* No outfielder crow-hop stutter step that allowed every baserunner to be safe last year. THANK YOU SDS
* Tracking fly balls with the new momentum is scary. Better not sprint and over-run the ball with a mediocre fielder. So good.
* I do not need the score-bug to tell me the pitch speed, as well as see it pop up on the screen with the ball marker on every pitch. At least let me clean screen my defense, and shut that off please.
* Pitches seems to have more "weight". They get to the plate with more pop, and have the appearance of a little more carry and less float.
* Still would like to see the actual ball smaller from the outfield/pitcher cameras. Still looks like a softball. This seems like an easy fix. Spinning seams are cool, but just make the entire sphere smaller.
* I have heard about baserunning issues. I have had none. I have that part of the game down after so many years... this seems to be exactly as it has been for a long time.
* Tag animations are better, and seem quicker. The throws to the plate all seem to be to the first base side, allowing the CPU to slide to the outside and be safe 90% of the close plays. Maybe it is my fault, and I need to aim the stick to 6:30 or 7:00 position, to make the throw go up the third base side. I'll see if I can do that on purpose with analog throws.
* Colors are great. I actually love the colors on the Overcast games.
* I have seen some absolute bombs, and some great bat drop animations.
* I have seen the dreaded "No-Doubt" cam (I still hate it) and have not seen the glorious "pull back full stadium" home run cut away.... I am hoping that is still in there. Golly, I love that view.
* I tried Pulse and Analog Pitching. Too easy, and manipulating. Back to Classic to stay.
*** Triple Asterisk*** No collision detection, and infielders and runners still morph through each other with no respect for the rules of physics and spatial occupancy. It is so go***** lame I have to mention this every year. I had a play at second where the CPU turned a double play, and the annoucer had the gall, the absolute GALL, to say, "Man, that is where guys get hurt. Those collisions can be devastating", and during the replay of the second baseman turning the DP, the runner went RIGHT THROUGH the second baseman's body. If you are seriously going to have a script read about how dangerous collisions can be, but then, in the case of that exact thing happening, in 2020, you have the two players morph through each other, it is just seriously lame. World Series '99 had fielder/fielder as well as fielder/runner collisions. Maybe we see it on PS5, but man oh man.... I have beaten this horse for five years...
So far, my positives outweigh the negatives, and I cannot wait to see what unfolds in my next five game test set. That'll make fifteen, and I'll post the Sliders for the TrueSim guys who played with them last year.

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread
Stealy, I agree with you so much on the weight and feel of the pitches. I faced Michael Kopech last night with the Mets and he was throwing 101. I mean it was humming and then he hit me with a 87 mph changeup... was so out in front. Anything is more fun when challenging like that. Breaks and movement seem much more realistic.
The baserunning does seem slot more aggressive which i love. Guys that should be trying to take the extra base actually do.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread
This game is phenomenal. I'm just doing exhibition games for now, but man, this game is a great upgrade. They didn't need to do much because 19 was a really solid game. I know there are those who find the worst in anything, but as an older gamer (47) this game is a total blast to play. I'm not into bells and whistles, just challenging simulation baseball. SDS deserves a kudos, and once Ridin gets his roster file together we're set for baseball (without the real thing right now).STEELERS INDIANS CELTICS

Mk...Dosent it just feel better in a good way. Its the only game I can literally play for hours. Hit a bomb with Alonso and the sound that came off the bat was phenomenal. Going to enjoy playing a full season this year.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread
- arm throw power from fielders needs toned down a touch. Too many throws that are rockets and I don't see any differentiation at 5. I'm going down to 2 and like that look.
- Fielder speed (infield and outfield) is best at 0. THIS makes the individual attributes come to life.
- baserunning speed needs to come down one notch. At 5 guys are running all over the bases. This is a good thing BUT it just needs toned down a small amount because I saw guys going from 1st to 3rd that wasn't realistic. They're still aggressive, just not overly aggressive.
- still toying with batting power. It's clearly stronger in 20 than 19.
- I wanted to love the new fielding meter, but I HATE it. This is one thing they did a lousy job of implementing. The bar just moves too fast. There's too much you have to do too quickly that allows for accuracy. If you don't nail the green it ALWAYS results in a bad throw, pulling guys off bases or botching clear routine double plays.
- I think the fastball speed has to be one notch higher than the offspeed pitches this year. There is little separation, so I'm going with FB speed at 7 and offspeed pitches at 6.
Still a work in progress. I don't know if I'll release sliders this year. Sometimes it becomes a collective chore when I really just want to enjoy the game.STEELERS INDIANS CELTICS

yes - very much so. Love the sound of the bat. Little things. What I'm seeing regarding sliders that I'm toying with...

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread
I've only got 6 games in franchise so far plus messed around a bit with the showdown stuff but man I'm enjoying this game so much right now. I can't remember the last time I daydreamed about at game at work.
I finally decided to give zone hitting a go from the start this year after always just using timing or pure analog can't remember what it's called. Wish I had done this a long time ago!Texas Rangers/Saints/LSU/Tottenham Hotspur

Re: MLB The Show 20 Impressions Thread
My first impressions:
PROS:- Playability
- Graphics
- Some new accessories
- Great sound quality
- New audios for some names and last names
- New animations
- New game modes (that I've played and actually don't like, I'm happy with franchise and exhibition games)
- New legends (that I don't care, the community has CAPs that are great, I only like legends because the picture and the uniform number allowed)
- Catcher mask colors, bat logo color, can be edited.
- Bat knob can be edited.
- New batting stances
- Realism added to stadium (adds, people, etc)
- New GUI
CONS:- No more classic Louisville Slugger SELECT CUT bat
- No more Franklin PRO CLASSIC batting gloves
- No more classic Adidas ADIZERO AFTERBURNER cleats
- Rosters are still no importable from previous game (MLB The Show 18)
- Even if new names and last names audios are added, we're still missing
some of them (ie: Arenado, Altuve, Acuña... the list is huge) - Nike swoosh in undershirt is gone
- No name-nickname-lastname option (nor adding "jr" at the end)
- No immersion for legends, classics rosters, etc. I would love to have something like that. No immersion at all (some ideas: baggy unis and pants, pants length, classic bat, gloves, batting gloves, cleats... I'd love to create some brands or logos and add them to the accessories)
- Not an easy way to use 2-way players (every player should be a 2-way player). Not pitching stats for position players.
- No option to edit stats, awards, info, pictures, extra data to a edited/created player.
Great improvements, but IMHO, it's too much arcade-styled elements and just a bit of baseball things.Comment
