TRADE NEWS: Padres Welcome Angel Perez

May 6, 2021 - Thursday may have been an off day for the Swingin' Friars on the field but not for the front office. Late Thursday evening San Diego acquired third-basemen Angel Perez and sent veteran shortstop Keith Cook to the Cincinnati Reds. The teams also swapped minor league prospects with the Padres receiving lefty pitcher Greg Duke and the Reds taking outfielder Jonathan Jimenez.

Perez - "I'm excited to join one of the top defensive teams in the league. Change is always hard but that's how you grow as a person and a player. I'm good friends with catcher Pedro Pena and he has nothing but good things to say about the Padres organization, it's going to be a great move."

The Padres were looking to acquire a natural third-base player to back-up Willy Benavides. Angel Perez (.289, 6 RBI, 4 SB in 45 at bats) may not seem like much of an upgrade but the front office and manager Brandon Albrecht believe that both Benavides and Perez will push each other and both will benefit. With the departure of Cook the Padres do lose a bit of speed on the base paths but the GM felt that moving the struggling Cook (.133, 3 SB, 4 RBI in 45 at Bats) now was a perfect time before his value dropped and to shake up the largely unchanged team.

Cook - "The last 4 years in San Diego have been great but that chapters done now. Right now I'm just focused on getting back on track and playing at the level I know I'm capable of."

Thursday also saw the signing of 18 year old outfielder Tristan Severino. With the departure of Jimenez in the Cook trade the Padres needed an outfielder for their AA affiliate. Severino was a late round draft pick by the Cubs but ultimately was unable to make the cut prior to the start of the season. Scouts noted Severino's presence at the plate and that he thrives when behind in the count but has a pedestrian arm that could hold him back. The Padres view Tristan as a diamond in the rough and at the very least holds the tools necessary to play at the higher levels of the minor leagues.

Miguel Ortega was out to put another notch in his belt for Cy Young candidacy. He succeeded. Ortega was on point, leading the Washington Eagles (86-61) to a 10-2 win over the Atlanta Mallards (61-85), keeping their first place lead in the NL East. Washington scored one run in every inning but the second before putting up a 3-spot in the ninth.

      W: Miguel Ortega (15-6, 2.61 ERA) 8.0IP, 2 ER, 10 K
      L: Jordan English (1-5, 13.50 ERA) 5.0IP, 4 ER, 4 K

      WSH: Joel Nooan: 2-4, 3 RBI (17), R (11), 2 2B (8)
      WSH: Ryan Little: 2-3, 2 HR (13), 2 RBI (52), 2 R (49), BB (61)
ATL: Seth Floyd: 2-4, RBI (31), SB (18)

With the season nearing its end, every game is crucial for Sacramento (80-74). That's why this 14-5 beating of Tacoma (62-92) was so key. It brought them within 0.5 GB of the Gamblers for the NL West lead. They jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first before ever making an out thanks to two RBI hits and a mammoth two-run homer. A nine-run 4th made it 14-0 and they held on despite some bullpen issues.

        W: Cole Hughes (1-0, 4.50 ERA) 6.0IP, 2 ER, 2 K
        L: Zheng-Zhong Soon (7-18, 4.37 ERA) 2.0IP, 5 ER, K

        SAC: Colt Snow: 2-4, 2 RBI (99), 2 R (89)
        SAC: Mitch Drew: 2-4, 2 HR (36), 5 RBI (92), 2 R (92), BB (81)
        TAC: Robert Gardner: 2-4, HR (17), 2 RBI (55), R (45), 2B (10)

Re: MLB The Show 20: Fictional Franchise Progress Thread

20 days out from the 2021 MLB draft and here are the standings. My Padres just had to be in the most competitive division of the early season. Everybody is at .500 or better.

          Around the NL West
          • As he enters the prime of his career 27 year old shortstop Dylan Netzel is only getting better and the Padres couldn't be happier. Netzel has played in all but one of San Diego's 44 games this season and carries a .294 batting average, 17 RBI, 15 doubles, 4 triples and 7 stolen baseballs.
          • A year removed from winning the World Series the Giants find themselves in last which partly comes down to missing ace pitcher Tadahito Takatsu. In the first game of the season Takatsu was pulled after giving up 6 runs in 3.2 innings then went down with an shoulder injury after only 1.8 innings of his second game. His 2 month absence was noticeable. However the 29 year old Japan native makes his return in the Giants next game.
          • Division leading Rockies owe their early season success to the off season addition of center-fielder Paul Keys. Keys is an early MVP, Hank Aaron and Gold Glove favorite with a .384 BA, 13 HR, 38 RBI and 1.000 fielding % through 41 games. Despite Keys and the Rockies early season successes all is not well. All-Star centerfielder Miguel Ramirez finds himself coming off the bench seemingly iced out since the arrival of Keys. Ramirez is set to become a free agent at seasons end.
          • The Dodgers look to have a future star in left field in the form of rookie Cole Sexton. Sexton signed with L.A. in the off season after starting his career with the Texas Rangers. Sexton played 19 games last year in his MLB debut. So far this year Cole is batting .360 with 4 homeruns and 12 RBIs in 38 games and is an early season contender for Rookie of the Year.
          • The Diamondbacks so far are the surprise of the year. After winning only 68 games last year they find themselves in second place with no signs of slowing down. Some of that success comes from veteran pitcher Al Parker. After suffering only the second losing record of his career in 2020, this year the 36 year old has sprung back to life. In his first 9 appearances Parker has a 6-1 record, 2.75 ERA, 53 K's and a 1.08 Whip.

Re: MLB The Show 20: Fictional Franchise Progress Thread

I have to put this in here, even though I'm just getting rolling on my Braves franchise with the updated roster.

Gavyn Cook has had himself a first week for the ages. He's got 2 8 RBI games, 18 RBI in 19 ABs and 5 HR, while platooning vs. LHP or helping spell in the OF on days when Lee needs a rest.

I know he'll regress toward the mean over time, but he's been out-of-this-world explosive in the first several games, helping us get to 6-1 to start the season off.

Talk about a playoff atmosphere. Division rivals Montreal Dragons (82-74) battled the Boston Bisons (82-74) with a Wild Card spot on the line and the season winding down. Boston rode a dominant performance from their ace, Milo Cabrera, to a 5-1 win.

              W: Milo Cabrera (15-6, 2.76 ERA) 8.0IP, 0 ER, 12 K
              L: Edwin Rodriguez (12-12, 3.84 ERA) 5.2IP, 2 ER, 5 K

BOS: Angel Perez 1-4, 2 RBI
              BOS: Bennett O'Neil 3-4, RBI (37), 2 R (44), 2 2B (16)
              MON: Frankie Fernandez 1-4, HR (25), RBI (81), R (72)

Winding up the regular season in my Cubs franchise. 5 games left, Playing at Pittsburgh with the Pirates 1 loss away from being eliminated from the playoffs altogether. Cubs up 5-3 in the bottom of the 8th and Bryce Lewis goes up and steals a game tying Home Run away from the Pirates! The Cubs win 5-3 and end all hopes for the Bucs! Cubs sitting pretty with 105 wins.

Quick update: 13 games in and we're off to a torrid 12-1 start, courtesy of a monster offensive start filled with power production up and down the lineup.

Jaylen Poole, who'd been lights-out in the first 2 starts, had a rough 3rd outing and tweaked his shoulder, putting him on the shelf for 1-2 months. That INJ made me realize how thin the pitching below the 26 man is. Furmiank has been tapped to fill the role, and we're just going to hope to heck that we get stellar starts out of Cabrera and Dent every time out and that we get lots of offense the rest of the way through the rotation.

So along with playing some of the minor league games I've really been trying to be a bit more hands on with the farm syste in general and so far it seems to be going good. Both El Paso (26-15) and Amarillo (24-17) are in first place and have guys looking like potential all-stars and picks for the MLB Futures game. Also have 3 players in the top 25 on the prospect list: (14) Bo Sparks/1B, (23) Salomon Chappell/RF and (24) Deon Parks/SP. Kris Dodson start for me in right last year but I sent him down and he has been raking but looks like he is cooling off a touch. If he stays relatively hot though I believe I can get some good value for him in a trade.

I don't monitor the teams daily but I try and be aware of hot and cold streaks and shuffle the line up if necessary outside of the games I play. Sent a couple AA guys down because they were really struggling and a couple changes due to injury. My goal is to make most changes during the respective all-star breaks of the minor league teams. I'm trying not to move people too often so they can level out from the ups and downs over the course a season and really get a chance to improve.

With two games left in the season, Columbus (87-74) moved to within 1 game of first in their division, while maintaining their 1 game lead on the second Wild Card spot. They were in a fight with New York (75-86) from the start, falling behind 3-2 in the third and then being tied at 4 in the 5th. However, two solo homers in the 5th and a three-run 8th blew the game open to a 9-4 win for the Bombers.

May 24th, 2021 - The rise of Salomon Chappell came to an abrupt halt last night. In the top of the 7th, while diving for a shallow ball hit to right center Chappell landed awkwardly on his left leg and needed to be helped off the field. Team doctors hoped it was a severe bruise but an MRI revealed a much worse outcome a fractured shin. Chappell is expected to miss the next 1-2 months. Prior to last nights injury Salomon was having another spectacular outing going 3 for 3 and clearing the wall to put his team ahead. The Padres first round pick in the 2020 draft was on fire up to this point. Through 34 games this season the right fielder had posted a .355 BA, 7 HR, 24 RBI and 6 SB and was a lock to get to the Texas League All-Star game. The Padres organization is monitoring the situation closely as they wish Chappell a speedy recovery and hope this won't hamper his development in the long term.

The second Wild Card spot has been decided! The Boston Bisons went up 1-0 after Bryce Lewis singled, stole a base, and scored on a Clinton Lake RBI double. However, they quickly fell behind 3-1 in the 2nd after pitcher Corey Kensing blooped in a two-run single. Montreal went up 4-1 but Boston put up two in the 5th. They added a tying run in the sixth, before breaking it open with a three-run 7th to take a 7-4 lead. Montreal got one back in the 8th but that was it.
