May 6, 2021 - Thursday may have been an off day for the Swingin' Friars on the field but not for the front office. Late Thursday evening San Diego acquired third-basemen Angel Perez and sent veteran shortstop Keith Cook to the Cincinnati Reds. The teams also swapped minor league prospects with the Padres receiving lefty pitcher Greg Duke and the Reds taking outfielder Jonathan Jimenez.
Perez - "I'm excited to join one of the top defensive teams in the league. Change is always hard but that's how you grow as a person and a player. I'm good friends with catcher Pedro Pena and he has nothing but good things to say about the Padres organization, it's going to be a great move."
The Padres were looking to acquire a natural third-base player to back-up Willy Benavides. Angel Perez (.289, 6 RBI, 4 SB in 45 at bats) may not seem like much of an upgrade but the front office and manager Brandon Albrecht believe that both Benavides and Perez will push each other and both will benefit. With the departure of Cook the Padres do lose a bit of speed on the base paths but the GM felt that moving the struggling Cook (.133, 3 SB, 4 RBI in 45 at Bats) now was a perfect time before his value dropped and to shake up the largely unchanged team.
Cook - "The last 4 years in San Diego have been great but that chapters done now. Right now I'm just focused on getting back on track and playing at the level I know I'm capable of."
Thursday also saw the signing of 18 year old outfielder Tristan Severino. With the departure of Jimenez in the Cook trade the Padres needed an outfielder for their AA affiliate. Severino was a late round draft pick by the Cubs but ultimately was unable to make the cut prior to the start of the season. Scouts noted Severino's presence at the plate and that he thrives when behind in the count but has a pedestrian arm that could hold him back. The Padres view Tristan as a diamond in the rough and at the very least holds the tools necessary to play at the higher levels of the minor leagues.
