Re: MLB The Show 21 Arrives on April 20

There were only 3 games I was considering buying in 2021. One got delayed till next year, one I already bought, then I was debating on MLB 21.

I am not moving on to the PS5 until probably fall or winter 2021 at the earliest.

The news of there being no carry over for a year and being invested in my Indians franchise made this an easy decision for me to pass on 21. When I eventually get a PS5 I will just move MLB 20 to that.

I agree with others here that revamped is not necessarily better. I envision some growing pains in the game this year and this will be the first non day 1 or preorder for me since MLB12. I do almost wonder if revamped means less depth to appeal to a bigger audience though.

I have always been positive about this game and knew that one day we would not be able to carry over our saves but it is still a sad day for me.

The features blurb does nothing for me.

It was a fun run for me but MLB20 is the long term answer for me at this point.

Re: MLB The Show 21 Arrives on April 20

Obviously too soon to have any real opinion and hoping for a great game, but my first reaction is that this may not be what I was hoping for.

I really like how MLB 20 looks and performs on PS5. I think it a really good game. I was personally hoping for MLB21 to be a leap to show off the PS5 next gen system and don't think we will be getting that.

The info says PS4 users can play against PS5 users. To me, this means the games are the same.

With the next gen NBA 2k, next Gen Madden, Next Gen Fifa.....you can't play against PS4 players. Those games are different. Being able to play against PS4 users leads me to believe there isn't a true next gen version pf MLB21. My guess is it will look better (similar to how PC gamers with high specs can enable better graphical options) but it will be same game.

Maybe I'm wrong as I'm by no means some tech guru but this is now what I'm expecting. Basically expecting similar graphics to MLB20 with maybe some enhanced grass or dirt effects.

Also concerned with the new gameplay modes but as long as almost our existing options remain I'll be content as it is a solid playing title currently.

Guess we will see. Just don't have that same level excitement I did when the next gen Madden and Next gen 2k were being promoted.

I would suspect because of cross platform that would mean no new animations for next gen. Even though the tech would allow for improvement. Kind of disappointing, but I expected the shallow, graphical "improvements" for 21. Hoping 22 actually tries to look next gen.

I can understand being upset about carry over saves but I dont know how some can be writing off the game from that little bit of info.

The only concrete decision I can make from that info is that it will be a longer wait than I hoped and I can feel more comfortable continuing to invest more time in The Show 20 for now.

This could very well be the end for us old gamers but I want to see more than this before I form any real opinion.

ya i understand their concern but it's sort of jumping the gun. let's wait to see what other information they tell us in this month.

When the game went from ps3 to ps4, were saved rosters/sliders carried over?

There was a mention of a path for upgrade to next gen for the collector edition.

I wonder if that will be a digital version as well and if so do you think you could buy a ps4 version and then have ps5 upgrade on another machine. I find myself using my ps4 pro quite a bit upstairs and if the game is cross platform would be nice to have a digital version on ps5 and ps4.

It could be...but let's take MLBTS 20 as an example.

The base slider setup is essentially the "simulation" style. Lots of ratings impact, lots of randomness.

A "competitive" base might be similar but might reduce the contact/timing (make hitting harder) sliders while decreasing control and increasing the pitch consistency slider (make pitching more dependent on hitting the meter). These four sliders alone would greatly change the game from a "RNG heavy" focus to one significantly biased towards those with good stick skills. They could do other things with respect to throw meter timing and so on. The question mark here is with the number of animations. Do they truncate some of the "pretty" fielding animations for a "competitive" mode to allow for more user fidelity? This could be one potential area where there are "issues" with game style "leakage" across modes.

A "casual" setup could be something like bumping up power, decreasing errors, making the timing window wider and so on.

Obviously, we know nothing right now, it's just idle speculation...

The roster carryover that was in 20 wasn't a thing until 20. In the past you had to start a franchise in the previous game then go into the new game to transfer players over individually.

There is concern by people me included because the writing is on the wall.

I can't speak for others but for me I was very much on the fence about even continuing on and the lack of year to year saves made the decision for me. It cemented what I was on the edge about.

Are we going to be able to have cross gen online franchises? I know in NBA2k21 i cant play online associations with my buddies because I have the Series X, and they do not.

I'm not sure how to feel, to be honest.

On the one hand, I'm excited the game is available on Xbox, both the One and Series models. I have a One S in addition to the PS4, and they're in different areas of the house, so will be nice to have the ability to play The Show on the Xbox.

No carryover saves for the PS4 is a crusher, for sure. I'm entering Year 5 in my Mets franchise started in MLB 18; I've played every pitch of every game in that time. I get that the carryover feature is a luxury and we haven't always had it, but it does sting to realize the option isn't there to move onto the new game with an existing franchise this year.

The multiple gameplay modes - that does give me a little pause as well, as we've seen this not work well in Madden, especially when it comes to patches and how they are tailored for online gaming/modes, but still affect offline and simulation modes. That said, I did like when NBA 2K had this option and feel that game took a turn for the worse in respect to simulation gameplay when the options were removed.

Is it? I mean, many here are jaded...but.....

The decision may very well have boiled-down to two options:

                                1. Do nothing/very little with franchise mode but keep carryovers.
                                2. Overhaul franchise but you have to do away with carryovers for a year.

What if the "new franchise" includes expanded rosters (beyond 90)? The roster size alone may have been enough to necessitate killing-off carryovers for a year - roster expansion will greatly alter every dynamic in the game...carryover saves likely would have been massively "busted". Once that new base is in-place in MLBTS21, it would (in theory) be able to continue in 22 and any franchises from 21 could be moved forward from that point.

If carryovers are gone to never return, then yes, it's bad. I just don't think this will be the case - I don't see the proverbial "writing on the wall" here. SDS even commented in the blog that they understand the popularity of this feature.

I'm going to say this though...I think it would strongly behoove SDS to be up front in their pre-launch materials/streams if they intend for carryovers to return for '22. It might be questionable from a business perspective to do this; but if they want to be a customer-driven service, then I think it would be a classy thing to do.
