Re: MLB The Show 21 Impressions Thread

I feel dirty for saying this, but I'm enjoying the runner starts on 2nd base in extra innings, it really adds a fun strategy element to the game. I was playing against Arizona and went 12 innings with various strategy each inning by me and the CPU, do I bunt the runner over, do I pinch run, etc.. I ran through my whole team I think and ended up losing.

What I like about PPP is when I bring in a new pitcher, it takes me some pitches to settle in which to me feels like real life.

This may sound petty, but in '20 when looking at your roster, the ratings columns were slightly closer together allowing you to see League, Age, OVR, POT, and 40-man. Now you have to scroll over once to see the 40-man column. I know it's not a big deal, but it was convenient being having those columns together.

Still adjusting to the new menu screens. I don't mind the non-white background, but some of the menus don't feel like they are an improvement. Almost feels like they changed them just for the sake of change.

Thankfully, the gameplay is really good.

Yes, good thing the gameplay is holding its own for the most part. It does seem like other areas of the game are taking steps backwards or in a direction that make it harder for the user to get to or see what they want to. And some areas are just broken like the vault situation. Sounds like they may need a new User Interface lead out there.

          I was wondering about that.
Let's say a pitcher starts the game by giving up 4 hits and 2 walks.
Was it simple because of the (bad) luck of the draw or was he starting with reduced internal ratings because that day he did not have it ?

A few impressions after about a week with the game:

--Pin-point pitching is awesome. This mechanic feels more like pitching than any of the others. I can definitely tell how it the window gets a little smaller on higher difficulties and can see how the PAR gets larger. The feeling of snapping off a perfect breaking ball is very rewarding, and on the flip side releasing one too early really feels like I just threw a hanger. I think they matched the difficulty of different pitches pretty well too

--bat sounds are hit or miss (pun intended). I think the perfect-perfect sounds are pretty solid (another pun), but the others do seem a little muted. I dont think it's necessarily worse than last year but it is noticeably different

--fielding is definitely improved especially in the outfield. I've notice bad CPU outfielders taking pour angles to a ball over their head and getting completely turned around. I've also seen good outfielders track down balls in the gap that looks like certain doubles. Ratings definitely make a difference in the outfield this year.

--Stadium creator certainly has a few limitations but it is definitely an awesome addition. It's really easy to spend hours in there tweaking things around. Hopefully night games can still get added this year as that would make them usable in franchise mode, and hopefully the add a search/sort function to the vault.

Overall I'm loving this game. It's a solid improvement over what was an awesome game last year. Nothing ground breaking, but in previous generations it's taken SDS a couple years to make huge leaps and bounds, so hopefully theres more awesome stuff to come in the future.

I don't know that I can definitively say, but my last game with Carlos Martinez starting, (meter pitching) I couldn't hit the accuracy marker with him to save my soul. Make a pitching change and go to Daniel Ponce de Leon and I'm hitting the accuracy marker probably every 7 out of 10 pitches, maybe more. Same with Genesis Cabrera and Giovanny Gallegos who followed.

And the first three games pitching with Martinez, I was fairly dominant against hitters, hitting the mark and pitching to the tune of a sub 2 ERA with 20+ strikeouts.

So can I definitively say its a thing? No...but it certainly feels over the course of a season that there are games when a pitcher just doesn't have it and he's missing his marks constantly.

As far as pitch speed goes the slower the speed the worse I hit lol.

I also like how the pitches change depending on stamina.

I was stretching Soroka as he had a shutout going into the 7th and I had to put away his slider. It had flattened out so bad that it was completely ineffective. I shrunk his arsenal and ended up getting the shutout. I really enjoyed how it played out.

Re: MLB The Show 21 Impressions Thread

I’ve spoken of this for many years...

I think that when the game loads, there are a multitude of things, which for the sake of argument, we shall call “variable stuff”.

I think there are dice-roll tendencies to have a little more/less control of pitches, more/less contact, more/fewer errors or errant throws, and when the game starts, some voodoo algorithm kicks in and has a cause/effect for each game...

I’m not saying a pre determined outcome or non-variable result equation, I’m saying some days your guys have it, and some days they don’t. Which, if indeed true and programmed to give wildly different possible outcomes, is awesome.

You play a game and it’s just a struggle. You can’t hit spots, your guy gives up 6 runs in 2 innings, and he’s just getting run through the grinder.

Restart the game. Play three innings and just hit the confirm restart. Same lineups, same pitchers, look at the ridiculous disparity you get in five, three inning starts and restarts.

It’s no coincidence. And it is glorious.

I don't know why they'd make the change, but I definitely am struggling to sit back on anything this year. I'm seeing pitches real well, still drawing walks fine, not chasing much, I'm just early on everything be it 101 or 81.

I play on legend with max pitch speeds and I am having the opposite experience. On 20 I was early on everything, even 100 mph fastballs, but this year with 21 I can’t catch up to anything except slow breaking balls.

Interesting. Out of curiosity, what console are you on now with 21 and what were you playing 20 on?

I had 20 on a PS4 Pro and have 21 on the Series S. I played 20 on performance mode, but maybe thr Series S has a more consistent frame rate with 21 than the Pro had with 20 so I'm getting less input lag. I really dont know. Same monitor is being used on 21 that I used on 20 as well.

The pitches just don't seem to be jumping on me any. I'll be slightly late here or there when I'm indecisive on some pitches, but I can sit breaking ball and react to a heater. I wasn't capable of doing that last year.

I think it’s a thing. Matt Boyd comes to mind, a guy who for me had a run where his WHIP was ~1.0 for a good ten starts, but then for a run of five starts just wasn’t showing any movement on his pitches, pitches that were consistently in the zone were out of the zone and vice versa.

I remember thinking by the fourth bad start that it was just BS he was performing so poorly and pulled him early as hell, but then when he was stinking it up five starts in a row I just left him in: “it’s your mess you deal with it”.

He recovered, pitched well, and had back-to-back good starts after that.

Short version: yes I think it’s a thing, it’s kinda BS, but can be navigated and managed and it’s ultimately really cool.

20 was on OG PS4 and 21 is on a pro, I probably should have mentioned that.... I’ll play 20 on the pro and tonight and see how it is.

Uhhh ... so something I haven’t complained about in a few years, guess everyone including me has forgotten about it .....

We still don’t have batting practice in franchise.

                              That blows my mind.

Why is batting practice limited to the main menu and the default roster (or at minimum, it can’t be your franchise roster)? Why aren’t there cages? Why isn’t there a pregame batting practice option, in franchise, where I can take practice cuts against my pitching coach, with my current franchise lineup, in the stadium I’m about to play a game, as fans trickle in?

Like a lot of people, I spend hours and hours and hours tweaking my franchise roster. I have zero interest in batting practice outside of the mode, outside of that roster. I do have interest in batting practice within the mode, with that roster; I always have, afaik most of us always have, and they’ve NEVER given it to us.

So I'm not too sure about that trade between the Yankees and A's. Clint Frazier doesn't seem like a big enough return for Matt Olsen. Not only that, they gave up two players to get him.
