Cardinals season ends in Game 5 of the NLDS

    Dodgers 8-11-0
    Cardinals 5-10-1

    LAD wins series 3-2

The Cardinals 2022 season has come to an end. And in this particular NLDS matchup, the road team won every game of the series. So much for competing for home field.

The Cardinals night got off to an ugly start as just 4 pitches into his night, Jack Flaherty would leave the game with an elbow injury. Good news is that he'll be ready for Spring Training in February.

Flaherty gave up a single to Mookie Betts on a 2-1 pitch and that was his night. The Cardinals turned to Max Scherzer who proceeded to walk Gavin Lux on 4 pitches, and then his first pitch to Corey Seager was a line drive double down the right field line plating two. Two batters later, after Bellinger lined out, Will Smith deposited a 1-1 fastball into the left field seats and by the time the first inning concluded, the Dodgers led 4-0.

An inning later, Mookie Betts would send a deep flyball to the center field grass for a solo shot that put the Dodgers up 5-0 and chased Scherzer from the game. Kwang Hyun Kim would enter in the 2nd inning and pitch thru the 5th inning keeping the Dodgers from adding on more. In the bottom of the 5th, pinch hitter Matt Carpenter would single home Tyler O'Neill as the Cards made it 5-1.

Paul Goldschmidt would double home Tommy Edman one inning later and the Cards trailed 5-2. After Arenado struck out, Paul DeJong launched a massive homerun into left center cutting the lead to one, 5-4.

The score would remain 5-4 until the 8th when A.J. Pollock hit a 2 out, 2 strike grand slam off of Hansel Robles to make the score 8-4. The Cards would get one in the bottom of the 8th on a Dylan Carlson pinch hit homerun, but that would be it.

The Cardinals will now turn their attention to the offseason as they look to fill missing pieces that will hopefully build upon a successful 2022 season and defend their NL Central Division crown and hopefully advance them beyond the NLDS.

Goodbye 2022 season, it was a hell of a ride.

    Bring on the Winter Meetings.

          Cardinals 2022 Off-Season Outlook

With the 2022 season in the books, and a successful one although its tough to feel that way after being eliminated, the Cards now turn their attention to the offseason and what they need to do to not only get back to the postseason, but to advance to the World Series.

The Cardinals will have decisions to make once the offseason exclusive contract negotiations begin. Yadier Molina (40) and Matt Carpenter (37) have both announced they are not retiring and would like to play one more season, and both would like to return to the Cardinals. Yadier has noted he will gladly take the backup position and let the Cards have a new everyday backstop for the first time in 18 years. Matt Carpenter nearly retired last year, but he and the Cards agreed to a one year deal over the summer to bring him back. He was serviceable this past year, but its no secret his skills are declining.

After that, what do you do with the other exclusive free agents:

          * indicates QUALIFIED

          Joey Gallo
          Roberto Osuna *
          Starling Marte *
          Max Scherzer *
          Daniel Norris
          Marwin Gonzalez *
          Hansel Robles *
          Sam Freeman (team option)

A few are no brainers. Its no secret that Starling Marte was disappointed to be replaced by Harrison Bader after he went on the injured list that exceeded past the trade deadline and into August. He was also displeased that Bader continued to be the everyday CF upon his return, and then when the Cards wanted to upgrade right field due to Dylan Carlson's inconsistency, the Cards acquired Joey Gallo instead of giving Marte the chance. So don't expect Marte to return.

The other no brainer is the Cards will decline Sam Freeman's team option. He was brought in late last year to help with the depth of the bullpen but he never got out of Memphis and really didn't do well there.

Hansel Robles will likely be allowed to go into free agency. Robles struggled to repeat his 2021 success this past season and the idea of just bringing him back is unlikely.

Max Scherzer will also likely hit the free agent market. The Cards brought him back last year, but MadMax was inconsistent last year and progressively got worse as the season forged on. With the success of Dakota Hudson, Levi Prater, and Carlos Martinez being under contract as well as Jake Odorizzi, I don't think Scherzer will be re-signed during the exclusive period. Maybe late if available at a discount.

Marwin Gonzalez will likely hit the market but expect the Cards to be in on him. I think both the Cards and Gonzalez want to see his market value before they agree to a deal.

Roberto Osuna and Daniel Norris are sure locks to return and the Cards will open up the checkbook to make it happen. Both were instrumental in helping the backend of the bullpen be essentially a lockdown. Now will they want to return? Norris I would say a lock. Osuna..well...he wants to be the closer, period. But the Cards aren't going to take that job away from Alex Reyes, especially after the young arm just won the NL Reliever of the Year award, even with him missing more than a month of action. Osuna will have to again accept being the 8th inning guy along with Norris or he will likely see the market.

Joey Gallo is so intriguing. The Cards acquired him with the idea of a rental because they wanted a left handed power bat. And at the beginning a rental looked to be a bad investment as Gallo struggled. But he find his swing in St.Louis and added additional pop to a lineup that had two 30+ homerun hitters (Arenado and DeJong) and Goldschmidt who missed by one (29) and Tyler O'Neill who hit 20.

But the Cards believe in Dylan Carlson and the young switch hitter continues to get better. So do you have Carlson be a bench player behind Gallo (O'Neill and Bader will definitely start) or do you move Gallo? Do you re-sign Gallo with the idea of trading him? Or, here's an idea, do you move Goldschmidt via trade and put Gallo at first and Carlson in right? Goldy struggled despite hitting 29 homeruns by hitting just .255 and not putting up a homerun or RBI in 5 games of the NLDS. Seems crazy, but if Gallo is moved a left handed power bat is once again missing and where are you going to find it?

It's a very intriguing offseason for the Cards who expect to spend a majority of their budget on their own players via free agent signing and arbitration cases. (Reyes, O'Neill, Bader, Gallegos, Hicks, Gant, Cabrera, Caratini)

          What do the Cardinals do?

Good run CB! Those Dodgers play tough no matter what system you are playing on. It has been a great follow as always.

Thanks man I appreciate the follow.

Yeah I felt good going into Game 5 with Flaherty on the mound, but once he got hurt, everything snowballed quickly. Thought we were getting back in it, but their lineup is potent.

Got some decisions to make in the offseason as to where we go to repeat as NL Central champs and make a deeper postseason run.

The Brewers are good as are the Cubs, though the Cubbies dealt with injuries this past year that really hurt their team.

I don't know if this is coincidence or not:

After making my trades, I put Acuna in CF even though his primary is RF and platooned Pederson/Duvall in RF. Acuna went into a homer drought right around that same time. Decided the other night to stick him back in RF and let Pederson/Duvall platoon in CF. In the three games since making that move, Acuna has four homers. I think he likes RF.

2021 Baltimore Orioles September 23rd-26th Update

                      Overall Record:90-66 (2nd AL East)

Orioles take series from Rangers, still trail New York by a game

The Baltimore Orioles won three out of four against the Texas Rangers in Maryland. Anthony Santander had a homerun in each of the first three games (2 in game two) to include a grand slam in the first inning of the series.

The team as a whole performed well on offense through the series especially early in the games. Thirteen of Baltimore's twenty-five runs in the series came in the first three innings of the games.

Baltimore took the first two games (6-2 and 8-5) before dropping game three 5-7.

In the last game of the series, Baltimore had a 3-0 advantage after the fourth inning. That lead would hold until the top of the 9th win Texas knocked across four runs off of homeruns by David Dahl and Joey Gallo. Tanner Scott was brought into the 9th with two outs and was able to get a strike out.

In the bottom of the inning, Michael Brantley was able to get a single through a Ranger's infield that was playing in to prevent a score from Cedric Mullins who was on third.

In the tenth, Scott was able to hold the Rangers scoreless and on the very first pitch of the bottom of the inning, D.J Stewart sent a fast ball from Demarcus Evans over the right centerfield wall to give the O's the victory and the series.

Three out of four still wasnt enough in regards to the AL East as the Yankees swept the Red Sox and extended their winning streak to six games.

Baltimore will now travel to Boston to take on the Red Sox while the Yankees go on the road for a three game set with Toronto.

big offseason coming up to beat them

my franchise with the cubs is plodding along in the first month. Some exciting games, an epic 7 run come from behind win over the braves was a highlight.

a weird couple of series against the brewers ... the first one, i dominated in every metric but lost the series 2-1. then the next series I won 2-1 with just 3 runs separating us, one decided in the 14th inning when of all people Michael Hermosillo walked the Cubs off with a HR that crept over the LF wall by a whisker.

lord have mercy if we met in the post season haha

I cannot solve Lueur to save my life - twice he's shut me out with 11 SO's both games... then i come out and shell Corbin Burnes in the final game and chase him after 3 innings and up 6-nil.

Cubs tied for first after first month with Brewers with Reds and St Louis just 1 game back.

                          Lineup

                          2B J. Panik -- .289
                          SS N Hoerner .262
                          C W Contraras .299
                          1B G. Polanco .222
                          LF I Happ .246
                          RF J Heyward / Hermosillo .246 & .303
3B T Estrada .356 ( this guy has the smoothest swing in the show, imo)
                          CF M Moniak .215

                          Hendricks 3.08 era
J Montgomery 1.50 - he's become the staff ace, super reliable
                          A Alozlay 2.75
                          Z Davies 4.10
                          A. Mills 5.00

                          K Stewart 3.80

Over the coming months i'll look to trade for a SP so i can match it with brewers and dodgers over a 3 game series. not sure who though... someone who throws strikeouts would be nice

                            2021 Baltimore Orioles September 28th-30th

Overall Record 92-67 (2nd AL East)

Baltimore clinches playoff birth after taking two of three from Boston

The Baltimore Orioles are playoff bound! The only question that remains is if they will be a wild card team or will they win the AL East. The Orioles and Yankees have identical records (92-67) with three games to go in the regular season. New York does hold the tie breaker with a 11-7 advantage in the season series between the two.

For the final three games, Baltimore travels to Toronto to take on the same Blue Jays who just took two of three games from the Yankees while New York returns home for a final three games against Tampa Bay.

                              Good luck!

Pull off the sweep of the Jays hoping the Yanks falter once against the Rays!

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

2021 Baltimore Orioles End Of Regular Season Update

                                Overall Record:94-68 (1st AL EAST)

                                Orioles clinch AL East

Picked by many to be the worst team in baseball for the 2021 season, no one could have predicted that the Orioles would win the AL East. The team showed a tremendous fighting spirit throughout the season and after 162 games, sit atop the division.

The division race between the Orioles and Yankees came down to the very last game of the season. Baltimore fell behind in the fourth inning 2-1 but that fighting spirit came through again as the team scored at least one run in each inning from the 5th to the 8th to take the 9-5 victory.

Still, even with the victory, the Orioles needed help from Tampa Bay or else, the Yankees and Orioles would end the season in a tie. In their game, the Yankees got out to an early 1-0 lead but Tampa showed they have some fight of their own as they would score 6 in the last half of the game while New York could only manage one more run as the game ended in a 6-2 victory for Tampa.

Both the Orioles and Yankees will play in the Postseason but New York will now have to face Minnesota in the wild card game while Baltimore will face the AL Central winner, Cleveland Indians (92-70).

Thanks CB! I credit our victory to your well wishes! I thought I blew it after the first game against Toronto because the Yankees lost their first game against Tampa then I also ended up losing. Luckily, they also lost the third game of their series.

I was under the impression that a tie went to the team with the better record in the season series. Is that not the case? Would there have been a game 163 had we tied?
