Re: MLB The Show 21 Franchise Discussion Thread

Finally back after a long hiatus . I will be trying to take the Marlins to the promise land.

To start off the offseason I made all the trades the Marlins made at the deadline. Only one difference was acquiring Anthony Kay in the Corey Dickerson trade instead of Andrew Mcinvale.

The Marlins then signed Yasiel Puig to a 2YR 15M deal with a club option. The Marlins weren't done though signing Roberto Osuna to a 1YR deal worth 9M. The Marlins are definitely gambling on two players to return to form and hopefully they will, given both players history.

    Marlins 2021 Opening day lineup:
    CF: Magneuris Sierra/Monte Harrison
    SS: Miguel Rojas
    3B: Brian Anderson
    1B: Jesus Aguilar
    DH: Garrett Cooper
    2B: Jazz Chisholm
    RF: Yasiel Puig
    C: Jorge Alfaro
    LF: Lewis Brinson

    Bench:
    C/RF: Alex Jackson
    2B/SS: Joe Panik
    3B/2B/SS/OF: Jon Berti
    C: Sandy Leon
    OF: Monte Harrison

    Rotation:
    Pablo Lopez
    Sandy Alcantara
    Trevor Rogers
    Sixto Sanchez
    Jesus Luzardo

    Bullpen:
    LRP: Elieser Hernandez
    LRP: Ross Detwiler
    MRP: Austin Pruitt
    MRP: Jake Fishman
    MRP: Anthony Bass
    SU: Dylan Floro
    CL: Roberto Osuna

    Prospects:
    SP: Edward Cabrera
    SP: Max Meyer
CL: Al Mitcheltree - Game Generated A Potential player picked up in Free Agency
    SS: Jose Devers
    RF: JJ Bleday

Opening the season at home against the Rays for 3 and then the Cardinals for 3.

Will be using the extra inning rule, playing every game with quick counts. Ill be doing updates at the completion of every home and away series.

      Cardinals get swept by Cubs

The Cardinals (51-33) were swept in Wrigley by the Cubs. The Cardinals now find themselves a half game behind the Brewers in the Central.

This was an ugly series as the bats didn't make the trip. The Cardinals scored one run in the entire series on just 8 hits. They fanned 25 times as a team over the series.

Not much to talk about, just pack up head home and hope for better results.

Next up is a 4 game series with the Mets then a 3 game series with the Pirates to get to the all-star break.

Braves agree to take back Miller

Nearly a month after the Braves acquired Joc Pederson, the Cubs had second thoughts on one of the prospects involved in the deal. So the Braves agreed to take back infielder Jalen Miller and send outfielder Jacob Pearson to the Cubs instead. While Miller is more major-league ready, most scouts think Pearson has the higher upside. Miller returns to Gwinnett, where he had spent the entire season before being dealt to the Cubs.

Cardinals sign Mark Canha to a one year deal

The Cardinals signed 33 year old IF/OF Mark Canha to a one year $5M deal. Canha was a free agent that hit .273 with 16 homeruns and 50 RBI's last year with the A's. He surprisingly went unsigned this offseason as no one would meet his asking price and he wouldn't come off that number.

Now as we are mid-way through July, Canha has decided that he wants to play baseball, for a contending team and the Cardinals are happy to oblige.

Canha will serve much like Carpenter as a bench role that can start when needed. He'll likely be the DH when the Cards need it and face left handed pitching. He can spell the corner outfield and corner infield positions.

Canha comes aboard at the right time hopefully as the Cards offense continues to struggle.

There was an open spot on the 40 man roster so no subsequent move was needed in that regard.

Braves stay hot, win seventh straight
The All-Star break didn't cool off the Braves, who completed a three-game series sweep of the Rays with a 10-3 win. It was Atlanta's seventh straight win and the fourth time during the streak they hit double figures in runs scored. They had scored in double digits just six times all season prior to the streak.

More good news for the Braves. Felix Peña, who had a rough debut in the series opener, struck out the side in the ninth.

The Braves now get a test with the San Diego Padres coming to Truist Park for three days.

Braves, Red Sox stay active on trade front
A day after re-acquiring Jalen Miller, the Braves shipped him back out. Atlanta acquired utility man Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer from Washington in exchange for Donovan Solano and Miller in a rare intra-division trade.

Solano, acquired from the Giants earlier in the season, was unhappy with his lack of playing time. Harrison is a defensive upgrade who brings more positional flexibility to the club. The Braves took back Mercer's $1M salary to offset some of the monetary difference between Solano and Harrison. All three players are free agents at the end of the year.

Solano takes over as the every day second baseman for Washington. The Nats are well out of the divisional race, but are still hoping to grab a wild-card spot. They also pick up a prospect in Miller, who could see time with the big-league club next year.

Meanwhile, Boston continued to overhaul its outfield. A few days after getting Starling Marte, the Red Sox acquired David Peralta from Arizona for a minor-league reliever. Peralta hit .262 with 14 homers for the D-Backs. He'll supplant Hunter Renfroe in right field. Although he had 15 homers, Renfroe was hitting just .202 on the season.

The Sox also bolstered their bullpen, getting Andrew Chafin from the Cubs. Chafin had a 2.82 ERA in 44.2 innings for Chicago. The Cubs get back a low-level starting pitching prospect.

Cardinals drop 3 of 4 to Mets, have lost 7 of last 10

The Cardinals (52-36) lost 3 games of their 4 game against the Mets and have now lost 7 of their last 10 games. The Cardinals are now a full 2 games behind the Brewers in the Central.

In Chicago the bats didn't make the trip, for this 4 game homestand against the Mets, pitching apparently missed the flight back.

The Cardinals gave up a whopping 56 runs in this 4 game series, which averages to 14 runs given up per game. The Cards gave up 15 homeruns in this series. Francisco Lindor went 16 for 21 in the series with 5 homeruns, 6 doubles, a triple and 14 RBI's, including 8 in the series opener after hitting a grand slam, a bases clearing double, and a RBI triple. He missed the cycle by not getting a single.

To say it was ugly would be a vast understatement.

The Cardinals will welcome the Pirates to town this weekend for the final 3 games before the All-Star Break. Hopefully the Cards can end the first half of the season on a positive, but judging by their last 10, that appears to be a tall task.

Cardinals acquire Victor Caratini from Padres

The Cardinals and Padres have struck a deal that will send 28 year old backstop Victor Caratini to the Cardinals in exchange for OF prospect Connor Capel.

This deal was a bit of a shocker for the Cards to make as Capel had been the starting center fielder since Starling Marte's injury and was doing quite well (.296 avg, .401 OBP, 3 HR 12 RBI's)

But the Cards were in need of an improvement at backup to Molina (or possibly replacement should Molina's struggles continue) and Andrew Knizner wasn't it at the moment. Add to that , the deepest part of the organization is arguably the outfield (starting pitching is deep as well), so the Cards decided the parting of ways with Capel was worth the return of Caratini. Caratini has hit .252 with 1 HR and 20 RBI's in his backup role at San Diego.

Andrew Knizner was optioned to Memphis where he will be the everyday catcher while top catching prospect Ivan Herrera will be sent to Springfield for everyday duties once he's activated from the 10 Day IL.

Toussaint pitched pretty well for me out of the rotation, so that's nice. I was really expecting him to get lit up. He did have 3 wild pitches, but that's on me for even trying a splitter with men on base (I'm on Xbox, so splitters are really dicey for me).

Quick update for the 2022 Cardinals season. Currently, we just made it into July. We're 51-25 and rolling right now. Had a rough stretch in June including a 7 game losing streak in early June. Recovered however, against some bad teams. It's been a slugfest in the first 3 games of the series against the Rockies at Coors.

Sitting with a 6 game lead in the division. One small/not small note. I ended up trading away Trevor Story to the Boston Red Sox for Xander Bogaerts. I was frustrated with the production that I was getting out of Story, and believing this is an 'all in' season for this team, I decided to make a drastic move. So far, it has paid off, as Xander has hit 7 HRs and 20 RBI since coming over from the Red Sox at the beginning of June.

Cardinals lose Mark Canha for the season

And just like that, it was over. Mark Canha, who the Cardinals signed less than a week ago is out for the season after dislocating his ankle Saturday afternoon against the Pirates. He was running out a single and apparently mis-stepped on the first base bag and suffered the injury.

Canha was 3 for 11 with 1 homerun and 2 RBI's in his limited time with the Cards.

The Cardinals have not yet made a corresponding move, and may not until after the All-Star Break.

                              Martínez (oblique) exits early

SP Carlos Martínez exited Thursday's start in the 2nd inning with tightness in his right oblique. Martínez completed his warm up pitches in the 2nd inning but only threw two pitches in the inning before walking off the mound with head athletic trainer Adam Olsen. Martínez is the third Cardinal starter this month to exit a start due to injury. Fortunately only one of those injuries has caused IL time (Kim, finger)

Adam Wainwright was pulled after 4 innings back on May 6th but was able to make his next scheduled start. The Cardinals admit they were taking extra precautions with Martínez given the current state of the Cardinals rotation. They have two off days coming up next week which will help manager Mike Schildt spread out his arms if he opts to rest Martínez and skip his turn in the rotation.

The Cardinals rotation for this weekend series at SD and upcoming series vs. PIT:

                              5/14 @ SD- Mikolas (1-3) 2.06 ERA vs Musgrove (3-1) 5.19 ERA

                              5/15 @ SD- Oviedo (1-0) 1.29 ERA vs. Clevinger (3-2) 3.49 ERA

                              5/16 @ SD- Flaherty (1-2) 3.09 ERA vs. Darvish (4-2) 1.90 ERA

                              5/17 Off Day

                              5/18 vs PIT Wainwright (4-1) 3.74 ERA vs Anderson (1-3) 4.95 ERA

                              5/19 vs PIT TBA

Cardinals sweep Pirates to end the first half of the season

The Cardinals (55-36) swept the Pirates over the weekend to end the first half of the season on a positive note and currently trail the Brewers by 1.5 games in the Central. They are tied with the Mets and Braves for the top wildcard spot.

The Cardinals looked like the Cardinals that we saw back in April and May as they hit the ball well, quieted the oppositions bats, and played outstanding defense. The Cardinals will now hope to build on this momentum when the second half of the season begins on Friday in San Francisco.

The Cards will use these few off days to look over their roster (lost Canha for season) and determine who to call up and determine what holes need to be plugged via trades to ensure they are legit contenders to play October baseball.
