The Nationals finished their first homestand of the year by splitting a two game series with the Phillies and being swept by the Mets. Seven of their first nine games have been against New York, and while they have been competitive in all but one game, they just don't have the experience or firepower to pull out the victory. In fact, the Nats have been close in every game this year except for the 13-2 blowout in Queens. But there are no moral victories, so the club will have to try to build on these first few series and move forward. They will now take to the road with three games in Atlanta and then four games in Pittsburgh before coming back home to face the D-Backs, Giants, and Marlins.
In the last game of the Mets series, breakout rookie Joey Meneses suffered a broken foot diving for a fly ball in right field. He was placed on the 60-day IL and the club will need to look for a solid bat to fill the void he will leave behind.
In other Nationals news, the club called up veteran lefty Sean Doolittle and sent Paulo Espino to Triple-A. The veterans are doing well for the Nats, and Nelson Cruz has already shown the youth the importance of playing hard, having already beaten out throws to first and nearly taking second base on a wild pitch. Even at 42 years old, he gives it his all. The club was wondering just how much he could contribute this year, but so far he is proving his worth on the field and in the clubhouse.
