Re: MLB The Show 22 Franchise Discussion Thread

The Nationals finished their first homestand of the year by splitting a two game series with the Phillies and being swept by the Mets. Seven of their first nine games have been against New York, and while they have been competitive in all but one game, they just don't have the experience or firepower to pull out the victory. In fact, the Nats have been close in every game this year except for the 13-2 blowout in Queens. But there are no moral victories, so the club will have to try to build on these first few series and move forward. They will now take to the road with three games in Atlanta and then four games in Pittsburgh before coming back home to face the D-Backs, Giants, and Marlins.

In the last game of the Mets series, breakout rookie Joey Meneses suffered a broken foot diving for a fly ball in right field. He was placed on the 60-day IL and the club will need to look for a solid bat to fill the void he will leave behind.

In other Nationals news, the club called up veteran lefty Sean Doolittle and sent Paulo Espino to Triple-A. The veterans are doing well for the Nats, and Nelson Cruz has already shown the youth the importance of playing hard, having already beaten out throws to first and nearly taking second base on a wild pitch. Even at 42 years old, he gives it his all. The club was wondering just how much he could contribute this year, but so far he is proving his worth on the field and in the clubhouse.

      Cardinals sweep Braves in St.Louis

The Cardinals (51-36) swept the Braves to begin the month of July and extend their lead in the Central Division. With the sweep the Cardinals are now 5 games clear of the Brewers as we get closer to the All-Star Break.

This series sweep has to boost the confidence of both the hitters and pitchers as the Braves have a stacked lineup and good pitching staff. The Cardinals pitching staff only allowed 5 runs in the entire series while the offense put up 20 runs.

About the only concern coming out of the series has to be the fact that Nolan Arenado continues his season long slump. Arenado, coming off an injury that saw him all but 5 games of the 2023 season, is hitting just .228 with an OBP of under .300 at the moment. His power numbers aren't bad with 13 homeruns, but only 43 RBIs.

The Cardinals are off on Thursday as they will be home this weekend and welcome the Boston Red Sox to town for a 3 game series. Then the Cards will travel to Baltimore for a 3 game series with the Orioles and then Milwaukee for a 3 game series with the Brewers to take us into the All-Star Break.

Padres acquire Bryan Reynolds from Pirates

The Padres have just made their lineup even more potent as they have acquired OF Bryan Reynolds from the Pirates in exchange for C Luis Campusano and RHP Peter Kendall.

The Padres will add Reynolds to a lineup that consists of Matt Chapman, Fernando Tatis, Manny Machado, Austin Meadows, and Cedric Mullins.

The Pirates get back a catching prospect after they oddly traded away Henry Davis in the offseason. Campusano will be the every day catcher it appears. Peter Kendall was a 1st Round draft pick 2 years ago and is a highly regarded prospect who will likely be on the Pirates big league roster at September call ups or no later than next year.

The trade deadline/season is always an interesting time in the baseball season.

Had a nail biter of an NLCS between the Braves and the Dodgers. After I had trouble closing out the Cardinals, had similar issues with the Dodgers. Took a split of the first 2 games in LA, then won the next two at home in Atlanta to have a 3-1 lead. But then lost Games 5 and 6 to face a winner take all Game 7. Took a 1-0 lead in the 4th in what was a great pitchers duel between Strider (6 innings, 0 runs, 1 hit, 3 walks, 3 k) and Kershaw (5.2 innings, 2 runs, 6 hits, 1 walk, 3 k). Eventually got up to a 4-0 lead. Minter struggle a little in the 8th, but Jansen came in with the bases loaded to strike out Edwin Rios, then finished off the 4 out save to send me to the World Series (at Dodger Stadium no less).

Austin Riley really struggled in the NLDS and Games 1 and 2, going 4 for 26 with 2 walks, no RBI, and no extra base hits for an OPS of .368. But he went off in Games 3-7, hitting 4 HR, 2 Doubles, and having 8 RBI. Spencer Strider was electric. After a lackluster start in Game 2 of the NLDS where he only lasted 3 innings, in his starts in Game 5 of the NLDS and Games 3 and 7 of the NLCS, he has pitched 18 2/3 innings, allowing 0 runs on just 5 hits and 7 walks. He's truly become my ace.

Now I'm heading to World Series to face the Astros for a World Series rematch (fun fact, there hasn't been one of those since 1978).

            July 28-31: COLORADO SPRINGS (59-47) @ FLAGSTAFF (53-54)
            Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,486)

            July 28: Snow Sox 2, Hops 1
            July 29: Hops 7, Snow Sox 5
            July 30: Hops 4, Snow Sox 1
            July 31: Snow Sox 7, Hops 5 (10)

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Hops split a huge four game series with first place Colorado Springs over the weekend. The split leaves them 6 1/2 games back as the calendar turns to August.

In the opener of a huge series, the Snow Sox got a great pitching performance from Mike Stoneridge as they edged the Hops 2-1. Stoneridge pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed just the single run on seven hits while striking out two.

The Snow Sox would grab the lead in the third on a Mike Rock sacrifice fly to center that scored Miguel Gonzalez. They would increase the lead to 2-0 in the sixth on a solo home run from Juan Caceras.

Flagstaff would get one back in the seventh on a Forrest Owen RBI single with two outs that cut the lead to 2-1. But the Colorado Springs bullpen did work with closer Jeff Cabrera striking out the side in the ninth to pick up his 29th save.

John Benitez (0-3) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing the two runs on seven hits. He struck out two and walked one. He pitched well enough to get a better result, but the red-hot Hops bats were cooled off on Thursday evening, managing just eight hits.

On a rainy Friday evening the Hops defeated the Snow Sox 7-5 to even this huge series. Rodney Millar blasted his league leading 31st home run to help pace the offense.

The Hops would jump on Jack Withenshaw immediately in this one, scoring four in the bottom of the first inning. Designated hitter Shoe-Lace O’Tying came up big with a two-run single to get the Hops going. Rodney Millar then blasted his 31st home run on the season. The two-run shot gave the Hops a 4-0 lead.

The Snow Sox would get one back in the top of the second as back-to-back doubles from Primo and Austin would push across their first run. But the Hops responded with two of their own as O’Tying hit an RBI double and Donnie Roland followed with an RBI single to make it 6-1 Hops.

Back-to-back doubles by the Snow Sox to open the third cut the lead to 6-2. Then in the sixth, Mike Rock lead off with a single to chase starter Angelo Chacin. Spanos came on a promptly gave up a two-run home run to Juan Caceras, his 19th on the year, to cut the lead to 6-4.

James Dudeck would open the seventh with a solo home run off of Oliver Benedict to cut it to a one-run game. But Aldo Osuna and Vic Miller locked it down from there to secure the win. It was Miller’s 25th save on the season.

Angleo Chacin (2-1) was credited with the win. He pitched five plus innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out six and did not issue a walk.

On Saturday evening it was the Shoe-Lace O’Tying show…again. He tossed a complete game two-hitter as the Hops defeated the Snow Sox 4-1 to get back to .500.

O’Tying (8-4) gave up a leadoff single to Mike Lowe to start the game, and a solo home run to Donnell Marcus in the fifth inning. He struck out a career high 12 and walked just one. He is truly a duel threat as his bat has been red-hot lately too.

The Hops would grab a 1-0 lead in the second on a Rodney Millar sacrifice fly.

After Marcus tied the game in the fifth, the Hops would retake the lead in the sixth inning when Oscar Aleman grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Robbie Westbrook.

The Hops would manufacture two more runs in the seventh as Forrest Owen walked with the bases loaded and then Rodney Millar scored on a Robbie Westbrook fielder’s choice.

The teams combined for just eight hits in a briskly played game. Randy Wilson (3-3) took the loss for Colorado Springs out of the bullpen after starter Randy Wolf left after five innings in a tie ball game.

In the finale, the Snow Sox rallied with four runs in the top of the tenth, and then held on as they won 7-5. Eric Lowe hit a two-run home run in the tenth, going 2 for 5 with two RBIs to help lead first place Colorado Springs.

Hank Hammond gave the Snow Sox a 2-0 lead in the second with a two-run home run to right. It was his fourth on the year. Robbie Westbrook would hit a three-run shot in the third to put the Hops up 3-2. A sacrifice fly from Jay in the fourth tied the game at 3-3.

This game featured ML Cy Young leader Sam Gonzalez for the Snow Sox and Ryan Pressley for the Hops, two of the best in the Mountain League. Gonzalez (15-3) wasn’t his best, allowing three runs on four hits through six innings of work.. He struck out six and walked three. Pressley worked seven innings for the Hops, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out nine and walked two.

In the tenth, Mike Lowe hit a two-run hoe run off of Oliver Benedict. Aldo Osuna would come on and gave up two runs on back-to-back-to-back doubles from Sam Conley, Mike Rock and Juan Primo to make it 7-3. The Hops would make it interesting as Arturo Mardones hit a solo home run and then they loaded the bases with one out, but could only manage a fielder’s choice from Robbie Westbrook to cut the lead to 7-5. Roberto Geronimo would fly out to deep right to end the game.

Thad Velazquez picked up the win with Jeff Cabrera picking up his 30th save.

The Hops (53-54) will now hit the road with another big four game series with second place St. George (55-52) beginning tomorrow evening. They will visit Prescott to close out the road trip.

Around the League: Tucson’s Steven Pina tossed a complete game one-hitter as the Roadrunners beat the Jack Rabbits 4-0. Pina (8-7) struck out ten and walked three. Fort Worth’s Jose Lema tossed a complete game two-hit shutout of Amarillo as the Kings stomped the Honey Hunters 10-0. Lema (8-7) struck out five, but walked four as he picked up his eighth win on the season.

Long Beach scored five times in the top of the 11th to win in Las Vegas 6-2. The Surf Dawgs’ Steve Willis went seven innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven and walking two. Amarillo hits four home runs as they pounded first-place Fort Worth 11-0. Paul Stanley (7-9) tossed a complete game, four-hitter, striking out seven and walking one for the Honey Hunters.

Salt River’s Aaron Henderson hit two home runs and drove in five as the Rafters outlasted the Desert Dogs 12-10. The teams combined to hit nine home runs in the game.

Long Beach took three of four from Las Vegas to stretch their lead in the DL West to 4 1/2 games.

Fort Worth’s Gabriel Carmona (10-3) tossed a complete game one-hitter as the Kings bested Amarillo 1-0.

Trades: Chandler has acquired third baseman Eduardo Contreras (78 OVR, B) from El Paso for starting pitcher Lee Romero (79 OVR, B).

Tucson traded reliever Ray Howard (84 OVR, B) to the Mariachis in exchange for 24-year-old closer Jose Jaquez (71 OVR, B) 24-year-old and first baseman Connor O’Doul (62 OVR, C).

Cardinals drop series to Red Sox in St.Louis

The Cardinals (52-38) dropped two games of a 3 game series with the Red Sox in St.Louis over the weekend. The Cardinals still maintain a 6 game lead over the struggling Brewers.

The Cardinals lost the first two games of the series as the bullpen was unable to hold late leads. Zach Thompson blew up on Friday night giving up 4 runs in the 8th to lose the game and then on Saturday, Giovanny Gallegos blew his first save of the season (was a perfect 23 for 23) by giving up 3 runs in the 9th. The Cards avoided the sweep when Reid Detmers pitched a gem going 8 innings with 10 strikeouts and no runs allowed.

The Cardinals are off on Monday as they travel to Baltimore for a 3 game series with the Orioles. They will then travel to Milwaukee for a 3 game series with the Brewers to close out the first half of the season.

                      2023 Arizona Diamondbacks 04/24-04/27

                      Overall Record:15-10 (2nd NL West)

D-Backs split two game series with Mets

The regular season series between the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets is already over. The two teams faced off seven times in April with the Mets taking the series 4-3.

The latest four game series saw Arizona win the first game after an early offensive explosion (11 runs in the first three innings) with seemingly every batter homering off of New York's starter, James Paxton who was pulled in the third inning. New York would mount a comeback but it wasn't enough to overcome that early offensive barrage by Arizona who won with a final score of 12-7.

The Mets took the series lead with wins in the second and third game of the set. The game three victory came in the 10th inning off a Christian Vasquez RBI single that knocked in New York's ghost runner. That game was Edwin Diaz's first blown save of the season.

Game four was a pitchers duel between Max Scherzer and Corbin Martin that ended in a 3-1 victory for Arizona after Ketel Marte hit a go ahead two run shot in the top of the 9th. Diaz was then able to come in and get the save.

Arizona will have a day off before returning home to face the Chicago Cubs to end the first month of the season.

Re: MLB The Show 22 Franchise Discussion Thread

My inability to close out a series finally caught up to me. After taking a 3-1 lead against the Houston Astros, my offense disappeared, and I only managed 3 runs across games 5-7, including just 7 hits combined in Games 6 and 7 in Atlanta.

Both teams got hit hard by injury. The Astros were missing Alex Bregman coming into the postseason. In Game 2, they lost Framber Valdez. In Game 4, they lost Jose Altuve and I lost Eddie Rosario (although Eddie was able to at least play in Game 7). In Game 5, diving back to 1B on a pickoff, Ronald Acuña tore his ACL (I flipped a coin and it was decided that it was the other knee and that he'd be out 8-10 months instead of a year). And then in Game 6, a 90 minute rain delay wiped out Soroka's start, forcing me to heavily rely on my bullpen (they left Garcia in, and even though his energy was gone because of the delay, he still dominated; his motion just kills my timing).

Yordan Alvarez won World Series MVP after also being the AL MVP. Dude was impossible to pitch to in games 5-7, going 8 for 11 with 2 hr, 2 doubles, and 5 rbi. Even when I tried pitching around him, he drilled a double or a single off the wall.

It's a disappointing finish. My pitching let me down at the end of the year (especially Max Fried and AJ Minter, who were good all season and really struggled in the postseason). Losing Acuña was a huge blow. Even missing the last 2 1/2 games, he led in postseason hits with 26 (he was very close to the record, although he didn't hit a HR). My lineup went cold at the wrong time. Contreras was excellent in September and then in the NLDS and NLCS, but didn't hit well in the World Series.

Hopefully I'll be able to reload and make another run at it. I've already extended Riley, Swanson, Harris, and Contreras, so I've got the core locked up for a while. Losing Acuña for most of the season hurts, and I'm going to have to find a way to address that. With my IF all locked up long term, I'm planning on moving Vaughn Grissom to the OF, and that will hopefully help.

The Nationals finished their seven game road trip with a record of 2-5, being swept by the Braves and splitting the four game set against the Pirates. They return to DC for ten games against the D-Backs, Giants, and Marlins. It's a much more favorable schedule than they've seen so far, and they are hoping to pick up a few wins to improve on a dismal 4-12 record. They will start the homestand coming off of their best offensive output of the year, scoring 8 runs against the Pirates in a game where Stephen Strasburg struggled.

In terms of team notes, the club called up their #9 prospect Donovan Casey to fill in for the injured Joey Meneses. He is not in the Top 100 prospects list, and his first two games saw him struggling at the plate, but he adjusted quickly and picked up 3 RBIs in his last game.

MacKenzie Gore will make his fourth career start to open up the homestand, and will be looking for his first win. He is 0-3 with a 7.90 ERA, but the numbers don't tell the full story. He has been mostly solid but has gotten into trouble when teams see him in their second or third at bats. Consistency will be key for him, and his ceiling remains very high.

The Nationals pitching has been solid all year, albeit not dominant. If the Nationals can find some more offense, they will be able to be a team capable of competing in every game, which is just what the organization is looking for in this rebuilding year.

Cardinals drop series to Orioles in Baltimore

The Cardinals (53-40) dropped a road series to the Orioles in Baltimore as the first half of the season nears the end. The Cardinals still find themselves 5.5 games up on the Brewers as the two teams prepare to meet for a 3 game series in Milwaukee to close out the first half, and then a 3 game series in St.Louis to open the second half.

The Cardinals won the series opener on Tuesday in a slugfest. The Cards and O's combined for 8 homeruns, 24 hits, and 18 runs as the Cards won 11-7. Jack Flaherty was lit up giving up 6 earned runs in 5 innings of work. John Means made his Cardinal debut against his former club in his former ballpark but lost a 3-1 decision as the Cards bats went dormant. A 2 run double in the 6th off the bat of Ryan Mountcastle would prove to be the difference. The Cards had chances in the 8th and 9th, but failed to score. Thursday's finale saw Miles Mikolas crash and burn as he lasted just 2.1 innings giving up 8 runs on 10 hits. The O's would end up winning 10-4 over the Cardinals.

The Cardinals are back on the road this weekend in Milwaukee for a pivotal 3 game series with the Brewers to close out the first half of the season. The Cards are up 5.5 games and can either extend this thing to a bigger cushion or let things get tight heading into the All-Star break.

Cardinals drop series to Brewers in Milwaukee as Cards limp into All-Star Break

The Cardinals (54-42) lost two games of their three game series with the Brewers in Milwaukee over the weekend. The Brewers move a game closer to 4.5 back of the Cards heading into the mid-summer break.

The Brewers won Friday night as Dakota Hudson was good but the bullpen was bad as was the offense. Once again, Hudson lost a game giving up just 1 ER as the bullpen allowed 3 more in a 4-1 loss. The Cards would bounce back Saturday as for the 2nd straight start, Reid Detmers would pitch an absolute gem going 7 innings allowing zero runs on 3 hits and striking out 6. The bullpen preserved the victory pitching a perfect 8th and 9th as the Cards won 5-0. On Sunday, Jack Flaherty would get beat up again, this time giving up 5 runs over just 4 innings of work which saw him issue 4 walks. The offense was stagnant, again, as the Cards fell 7-0.

The All-Star break couldn't get here fast enough as the Cards have struggled the past couple of series. The Cardinals will open the 2nd half of the season at home versus the Brewers.

Druw Jones stars in Futures Game as American League defeats National League

The American League Futures defeated the National League Futures 5-1 on Sunday at Angel Stadium in Los Angeles. Top prospect Druw Jones (Rays) was the star of the game going 4 for 4 with a homerun, 2 doubles and 4 RBIs.

The Cardinals were represented by 2 players. Jordan Walker (3B) and Gary Coveliski (2B). Walker went 1 for 2 with a double and Coveliski went 0 for 1 with a walk and strikeout.

Angel Stadium will now get ready to play host to the 2024 All-Star Game on Tuesday evening.
