      Cardinals sweep Rockies in St.Louis

The Cardinals (4-2) swept the Rockies in a game series in St.Louis to begin the week. The Cardinals have now won 4 straight as they take an early lead in the NL Central Division.

Max Scherzer made his Cardinals debut on Monday and pitched 6 innings giving up 1 run on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. Gio Urshela continued to swing a hot bat going 3 for 3 with a RBI. Harrison Bader came up big with a 3 run homerun that helped propel the Cards to a 5-1 win.

Matthew Liberatore got the ball on Tuesday night in his first start this year after earning a rotation spot in the Spring. Liberatore went 6.1 innings giving up 3 runs on 7 hits, but did earn the victory as the offense exploded for 8 runs on 11 hits in an 8-3 win.

Jack Flaherty who earned a loss in his season opening start, would rebound a pitch a complete game shutout to earn his first victory of the year. Flaherty gave up just 3 hits and struck out 12 in route to his complete game shutout. The Cards offense was all Dylan Carlson who went 4 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

The Cardinals will take their first road trip of the 2025 season as they travel to Milwaukee for a 4 game series with the Brewers.

41 games into year 2 with my Braves, and it's been an up and down first quarter of the season. Currently riding a 9-2 stretch to get to 22-19, 2 games behind the 1st place Mets. My pitching really struggled in April, but has (for the most part) flipped the script so far in May. 2 weeks away from getting Mad Fried back, and I should get Ian Anderson back around 2 weeks after that. Anderson, however, may have lost his spot in the rotation. Kyle Muller has been fantastic in 8 starts this year, going 3-0 with a 2.25 era. The flip side is Tyler Matzek. The former postseason hero, coming off a solid 2022 (3.31 era) got sent to the minors, after allowing a .520 OBP to start the season.

Offensively, Dansby Swanson and Matt Olson both started the year on fire before cooling off. Even so, Matt Olson is leading the league in HR with 15. Austin Riley, on the other hand, has struggled mightily, hitting .180/.231/.307 with just 3 HR so far. Adam Duvall has a .986 ops in a platoon with Daulton Varsho. The plan was for them to continue to platoon in LF when Acuña returned, but Drew Waters is making his case to be the everyday LF by hitting .316/.404/.539 so far. He's hit well enough that Vaughn Grissom got sent down to Triple A to get more consistent playtime, as Waters has claimed that spot on the lineup.

Some surprises around the league: at the quarter mark, Nolan Gorman is the favorite for NL MVP (1.038 ops and 13 HR so far). Mark Melancon, who is a 69 ovr, is 18/18 in saves and hasn't allowed an earned run yet. He also just recently cleared 300 career saves. The Marlins (coming off 71 wins) are 1 gb of the Wild Card. The DBacks (coming off 76 wins) are 25-15 and in 1st place. The Tigers (who won just 58 games last year) are just 2 games back in the Central at 21-18. The A's are epically bad, being led on offense by 2 players drafted in 2022 to an 11-30 record; on pace for 118 losses.

Cardinals sweep Brewers for 8th straight win

The Cardinals (8-2) kept the momentum going with a 4 game sweep of the Brewers in Milwaukee over the weekend and have now won 8 straight games.

Madison Bumgarner got the ball Thursday night and was solid going 6.2 innings allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits with 7 strikeouts. The offense jumped out early scoring 6 runs in the top of the 1st and never looked back in route to a 11-3 win.

On Friday, Reid Detmers made his second straight quality start going 7.1 innings as he earned his 2nd victory of the season. Detmers would earn 11 strikeouts while allowing just one run. Tyler O'Neill was big with the bat recording 3 hits including a homerun with 5 RBIs on the day. The Cards won 7-2.

Saturday saw Max Scherzer toss an 8 inning masterpiece. Mad Max struck out a whopping 15 hitters in 8 innings giving up no runs on just 3 hits. He was pullled in the bottom of the 9th after 122 pitches. Giovanny Gallegos preserved the 2-0 win striking out the side. The lone offense was off the bat of Harrison Bader, a 2 run triple in the 7th.

Sunday Matthew Liberatore got the ball and struggled thru 5 innings. 4 runs on 8 hits and just one striketout. He would get the no decisionas the offense rallied late with 7 runs in the final 3 innings to earn the 8-6 victory.

The Cardinals will now travel to the Bronx for a 3 game series with the reloaded Yankees.

A Trip Around the Bases of the League

1st) Bryce Harper recorded his 1000th RBI of his career over the weekend

2nd) Vlad Guerrero Jr hit the 200th homerun of his young career

3rd) Austin Riley of the Braves now has a hitting streak of 18 games.

Home) The Twins have lost 4 straight games. Why on they on the list? They've been shutout all 4 games and have a total of 7 hits in those 4 games.

Was four outs away from a no-hitter with Soroka in Game 1 of the Division Series. Nimmo broke it up with a clean double.

Our pitching and hit home runs philosophy is working well so far, as we're up 2-0 in the series over the Mets.

Cardinals sweep Yankees in the Bronx

The Cardinals (11-2) swept the Yankees in a 3 game series in the Bronx and have now won 11 straight games. The Cardinals lead in the central is now 3 games over the Reds.

Jack Flaherty got the sweep started on Monday with a gem of a performance going 7 innings allowing no runs on just 3 hits with 6 strikeouts. Edmundo Sosa and Bader provided the offense as Sosa drove in 1 run on 2 hits, while Bader drove in 2 on 2 hits. Giovanny Gallegos earned his 4th save of the year as Cards won 3-0.

Madison Bumgarner would impove to 2-1 on the year as he went 6.2 innings giving up one run on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts. Paul Goldschmidt would break out of his season long slump, at least hopefully, as he went 3 for 4 on the day. Edman, Carlson, Sosa, Herrera, and Sierra each recorded one RBI in the 5-1 Cardinals victory.

Reid Detmers would improve to 3-0 as he tossed a complete game shutout against the Bronx bombers. Detmers would scatter 5 hits and only recorded 3 strikeouts but he continues to miss the big part of the bat. Tyler O'Neill would deliver a 2 run double in the 5th and Sierra, Sosa, and Goldy would add one RBI each as the Cards cruised to a 5-0 win.

The Cardinals return home for a 4 game weekend series with the Reds.

I hope it comes to that! There are definitely some pieces already in place, and I may have just drafted a few more. My first round pick has a potential of 94 (starting pitcher) and I have a third baseman with a potential rating of 87. Of course they might be busts but that's the fun of drafts!

Max Fried is the most snake bitten (no pun intended) dude for me. Opening Day, had to leave after 2 pitches due to injury. Makes his next start, only gets through 4 outs, and is on the IL with another injury. Comes off the IL on Memorial Day against the Diamondbacks, second batter in the 2nd inning hits him with a comebacker and he's injured again. 53 games into the season, he's made 3 starts and pitched 3 total innings. Unreal.

I’ve created 12 teams so far but think I’d like to change some stadium choices after seeing some stadiums in the vault.

Apologies for interrupting the franchise talk.

You can change stadiums at any time even after you start the franchise. Uniforms have to be done before the season starts and then in the offseason you can "relocate" a team (basically just change their uniforms).

I created the 30 teams but have been working on some uniform updates for the 2023 season on a bunch of teams. I have been doing some minor edits to my stadiums, but those immediately update during the season.

                        Hope this helps!

                          August 25-28: FLAGSTAFF (67-65) @ FORT WORTH (73-59)
Stadium: Globe Life Field (Capacity: 40,300)

                          August 25: Hops 6, Kings 3
                          August 26: Hops 5, Kings 0
                          August 27: Kings 8, Hops 7 (12)
                          August 28: Hops 7, Kings 6

Arlington, TX (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops took three of four from the ML East leading Fort Worth Kings to keep their playoff hopes alive. This was a thrilling series with two of the wins coming in the final at bat as the Hops opened up a ten game road trip winning three of four.

The Hops would take the opener 6-3 behind a five-run fourth inning. Robbie Westbrook helped pace the offense, going 1 for 3 with a double, walk, RBI and a stolen base.

The Hops would grab the lea din the third on an Art Mason RBI single. They would then break the game open in the fourth, scoring five times on six base hits. Robbie Westbrook doubled home Oscar Aleman. Roberto Geronimo singled home Rodney Millar. Forrest Owen singled home Westbrook. Art Mason singled home Roberto Geronimo and Isaac Nettles hit a sacrifice fly that scored Forrest Owen.

The Kings would get one back in the bottom half on an RBI ground out from Park. Randy Klaus hit a long solo home run to left in the sixth, it was his 36th on the season to cut the lead to 6-2. Cal Velasco would add an RBI single in the eighth off of reliever Peter Gorzelski to trim the lead to three.

Vic Miller came on to close out the game, picking up his 33rd save as he struck out two.

John Benitez (3-4) earned the win with a strong seven innings of work. He allowed two runs on just six hits. He struck out two and did not issue a walk.

Jose Lema (9-10) took the loss for Fort Worth. He only lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out three.

The Hops hit into three double plays in the game. Robbie Westbrook stole his 38th base on the season and Roberto Geronimo stole his 28th in the win.

The Hops took Friday evenings game 5-0 behind a great pitching performance from Angelo Chacin. Chacin worked five innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three and walking two.

Offensively, the Hops would score four times in the fourth inning. Josh Ortega lined an RBI double to score Shoe-Lace O’Tying to give Flagstaff the lead. Robbie Westbrook then singled home Ortega. After loading the bases with none out, sacrifice flies from Forrest Owen and Arturo Mardones made it 4-0.

Rodney Millar would add an RBI single in the eighth to make it 5-0.

But the story was the Hops pitching. On a rany evening with the roof closed in Arlington, the Hops used three pitchers to silence the Kings bats. Angelo Chacin (5-2) earned the win, but Mark Wirth and Samuel Espinoza pitched the final four innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five.

Alexi Mora (0-1) took the loss for the Kings. He only went 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while striking out three and walking two in his 2022 debut.

On Saturday evening the Kings rallied from four down to stun the Hops 8-7 in extra innings. ML MVP candidate Randy Klaus homered three times including a walk off home run in the twelfth inning to win it for the Kings.

Randy Klaus went 4 for 6 with three home runs and a double, driving in five runs as Fort Worth moved back into first place in the ML East with the walk off victory.

This was a matchup of two of the best pitchers in the Mountain League with Gabriel Cardona going for Fort Worth and Shoe-Lace O’Tying taking the rubber for Flagstaff, and each was decent in this one. But it came down to the bullpens and they were not great.

The Hops would score two in the top of the sixth thanks to Rodney Millar’s 38th home run on the year. That put the Hops up 3-1. Randy Klaus responded with a solo home run in the bottom half and Woodson would hit a sacrifice fly to tie the ball game.

Flagstaff would score four in the top of the seventh to seemingly put this one away. Forrest Owen had an RBI single. Art Mason grounded out to score Donnie Roland. Emmitt Hampton lined a single to left to score Art Madon and Rodney Millar doubled to center to score Hampton.

But manager Bud Black sent O’Tying back out in the seventh. He gave up a walk and single before getting lifted for Oliver Benedict. Benedict’s first pitch was hit a very long way by Randy Klaus. The three-run home run cut the lead to 7-6.

Closer Vic Miller would then serve up a solo home run to Roy Graham to lead off the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. It was Miller’s fifth blown save on the season.

Then with two-outs in the 12th, Randy Klaus homered off of Adrian Spanos to end it. It was his third of the game and league leading 39th in the season. He also leads the Mountain League with 107 RBIs.

Manager Bud Black after the game admitted that he probably should have pulled O’Tying when up by four in the seventh but the youngster convinced him that he had three more outs left in his arm.

To make matters worse, designated hitter and outfielder Oscar Aleman suffered a fractured hand base running in the game and will likely miss the rest of the season. Aleman was hitting (.303) with 22 home runs and 68 RBIs. Bud Black said that Shoe-Lace O’Tying will likely move into the DH role but the club will make a roster move also.

The finale was another thriller as Isaac Nettles hit a two-out, three-run home run in the ninth to put Flagstaff back in front and they would hold on for a 7-6 victory to take three of four in the Metroplex.

Flagstaff (67-65) led 3-0 in the seventh with Ryan Pressley cruising on the mound. But he would fall apart after recording the first two outs. Harris doubled to center and Newman singled him home to get the Kings on the board. Roy Graham would then hit a two-run home run to tie the game. It was his second huge home run in two games and just his fourth on the season. Mikey Fisher would then hit an opposite field homer to put the Kings up 4-3!

The Hops would respond to tie it as Grant Mitchell grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that allowed Phillip Choi to score.

But in the bottom of the eighth, Randy Klaus singled off of Aldo Osuna with two outs and Chris Carlisle blasted a two-run home run into the seats in right to give Fort Worth a 6-4 lead.

That setup Isaac Nettles to be the hero in the ninth. After Robbie Westbrook doubled and Roberto Geronimo walked, Josh Ortega and Phillip Choi both struck out against closer Gregg Fierro. Isaac Nettles worked the count to 2-2 and then hit a hanging slider into the seats in right. It was his first home run on the season and gave Flagstaff the shocking 7-6 lead.

Vic Miller came on after blowing a ninth inning lead last night. He sent down the Kings in order to earn his 34th save and help Flagstaff win this huge series to open the road trip.

The Hops will have Monday off as they travel to Lubbock for a three game series with West Texas (65-67) beginning on Tuesday.

Around the League: Las Vegas got seven strong innings from Roger Frawley (9-5) as they slipped by Salt River 2-1. Frawley struck out nine and walked one, scattering just four hits and allowing one earned run in the win.

The Phoenix Firebirds remain red hot as they scored three in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Prescott, 6-4. Mason Ortiz blasted a three run homer to walk it off to help the Firebirds to their fifth straight win and move a season high eight games over .500.

Top pick in the IBL draft Matt Campbell (8-11) tossed a complete game two-hitter, striking out six, as the San Diego Seals shutout the Mesa Solar Sox 4-0. Campbell lowered his ERA to 3.61.

Steve Heupel homered and drove in four and Brian Valenzuela hit a grand slam as Gilbert defeated Yuma 9-2. Armando Bermudez (12-4) got the win, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six as he leads the Desert League with a 2.12 ERA.

Alright CB, the 2022 NLCS is set. Braves vs. Cardinals.

We completely shut down the potent Mets lineup in the NLDS, allowing just nine hits in the three-game sweep. Mike Soroka was four outs from a no-hitter, and he had the worst performance of our starters. Soroka ended up allowing a run on two hits in his 7.2 innings of work. Max Fried and Jose Berrios each pitched six shutout innings.

We hit nine home runs to power the offense. Ozzie Albies, Freddie Freeman and Travis d'Arnaud had two homers apiece.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, took out the Padres in five. Jack Flaherty was 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in the series, getting the win in the deciding game.

                            Scheduled pitching matchups
Game 1: Soroka vs. Zac Gallen
Game 2: Fried vs. Miles Mikolas
                            Game 3: Berrios vs. Flaherty
Game 4: Ian Anderson vs. Kwang Hyun Kim

Both ALDSs went five games. We'll get an ALCS rematch of 2021 with the Yankees facing the White Sox. But Chicago has home-field advantage this time around.

We split our 4 game series with the Reds as they ended our 11 game winning streak. We then proceeded to drop 2 of 3 to the Cubs. We are now in Atlanta for a 3 game series with the Braves.

Injuries have struck as we lost Harrison Bader until mid-June with a torn hamstring. Gio Urshela was also injured and placed on IR due to a wrist sprain.

Its crazy to think that we are 14-6 and leading the NL Central by 4 games considering that the middle of our lineup is terrible, along with Tommy Edman at the top of the lineup.

                              Current averages:

                              Edman: .098
                              Goldy: .176
                              Arenado: .197
                              O'Neill: .165

Dylan Carlson and Gio Urshela have been the most consistent in the lineup as they are both in the Top 10 in the NL in average (Carlson .389 and Urshela .345) Bader while only hitting .298 has been consistent as well as he was getting on base at .400+ clip.

Our pitching has been fairly solid thru the first 20 games or so. Liberatore has struggled his last two starts and Alex Reyes and Genesis Caberera have been shaky in the pen, but all in all, pitching is helping carry the club right now.
