The Nationals wrapped up their ten game homestand with a come from behind win in the 10th, taking one of four from the Phillies. They only managed to go 3-7 on the homestand, but rookie Joey Meneses has come on hot in the last few games. He drove in four runs and hit his first home run, and looks to be ready to go after missing most of the season thus far. Cesar Hernandez and Victor Robles are also coming up with key hits, and look to be turning their rough seasons around.

The Nationals are 24-50, last in the division and 14th in the NL. They will have a day off before going to Baltimore for two gaem, followed by another day off and then three in Arlington against the Rangers before returning home to face the Pirates to end the month of June.

      2023 Arizona Diamondbacks 06/01-06/04

Overall Record:39-21 (2nd NL West, 3.0 behind Dodgers)

D-Backs start June off right with sweep of Nationals

The Washington Nationals are not very good. They currently sit last in their division and Juan Soto is really their only offensive threat. They do have a young potential star in Brady House who can compliment Soto but with the team's lack of wins, will Soto resign after his contract runs out this year?

Arizona started the series handing former Diamondback Patrick Corbin his 100th loss of his career. Corbin started the game off looking like he was determined to not let his former team give him that loss. He did not allow a hit to Diamondback hitters in the first two innings. That came unraveled in a big way in the third inning after he walked the bases loaded which led to Ketel Marte hitting his second grandslam of the season. Arizona would end up winning that game 7-2.

As mentioned earlier, Washington didnt have much offense throughout the series, losing game two 2-1 and three 3-0. They did score five runs in the third game but that came after Arizona opened up a big lead that eventually ended in a 11-5 victory.

Marte had another homerun in game four of the series. That homer put him at 19 for the year which pushed him past team mate Carson Kelly and others for the number one spot in the NL and MLB as a whole. He also leads the majors in RBI's (62) and is closing in on another team mate, Daulton Varsho for the NL batting average lead (Varsho .346/Marte .332).

Buddy Kennedy also increased his hitting streak to twenty games during this series and is in a race with the Dodgers Freddie Freeman to see who can last longer. Kennedy currently has 20 while Freeman is sitting at 18.

Arizona will look to continue the strong start of the month as they travel to San Diego to face the Padres (30-29) who have struggled since Arizona swept them in mid May

Collin McHugh has absolutely fallen apart on me. After having a 1.31 era in his first 68 2/3 innings, he has allowed 9 er in 2 innings in his last 3 appearances. He's only given up 19 earned runs all season, and almost half of those have been in the last week. I am now tied for the league lead with 24 blown saves after having only 21 in all of last season.

Riley's historic night powers Braves to Game 3 win

Austin Riley homered three times, including a sixth-inning grand slam, and set a World Series record with eight RBIs as the Braves powered past the Yankees 15-5 in Game 3 of the 2022 World Series.

            Atlanta leads the series 2-1.

Riley joined Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, Albert Pujols and Pablo Sandoval as the only players to homer three times in a World Series game.

Marcell Ozuna also homered for the Braves, who had 17 hits in the win. Giancarlo Stanton homered twice for New York, but it was nowhere near enough.

Jose Berrios got the win, allowing three runs in 7 innings of work. German Marquez took the loss, getting tagged for seven runs in 2.1 innings.

Ian Anderson faces Deivi Garcia in Game 4 at Yankee Stadium.

Braves a win away from World Series repeat

A Braves offense that struggled for most of the postseason has found its groove at Yankee Stadium.

Atlanta took Game 4 of the World Series, 13-4, to move to within a game of repeating as World Series champions. Travis d'Arnaud broke a four-all tie in the fourth inning with a bases-clearing three-run double. An inning later, Ronald Acuna blasted a three-run homer to highlight a five-run inning to blow the game open. The Braves tallied 17 hits for the second night in a row.

Ace Mike Soroka will try to close things out in Game 5.

                Sept 16-18: FLAGSTAFF (77-72) @ EL PASO (74-75)
Stadium: Southwest University Park (Capacity: 9,323)

                September 16: Hops 5, Blue Rocks 0
                September 17: Blue Rocks 5, Hops 4
                September 18: Blue Rocks 3, Hops 1

El Paso, TX (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops dropped two of three in El Paso to close out their road trip. The two losses have sunk the Hops four games back in the Wild Card chase with just 13 games left in the season.

The Hops opened the series with a 5-0 victory on Friday afternoon. Ryan Pressley tossed a complete game five-hit shutout to pick up his 11th win on the season.

Pressley would get all the run support that he would need in the third inning when Leandro Lugo doubled home Arturo Mardones. The Hops would then hit three solo home runs in the fourth to blow this one open as Rodney Millar (41), Josh Ortega (24) and Forrest Owen (15) all homered. Millar would add an RBI single in the fifth to make it 5-0.

The story was the starting pitching of Ryan Pressley. Pressley (11-11) tossed the complete game, allowing just five hits and striking out five while issuing no walks. He only threw 104 pitches as he threw his third complete game on the year.

The Hops have now won eight of nine and are just three games out of the second ML Wild Card spot. They are also a season high seven games over .500.

On Saturday afternoon, the Blue Rocks rebounded with a 5-4 victory over the Hops. Josh Hawks went 2 for 4 with a big two-run home run to help lead El Paso to the victory.

Flagstaff would jump out to a 2-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings on a Rodney Millar solo home run and Leandro Lugo RBI single. But the Blue Rocks would respond. Brandon Gayle tripled and scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the third to get them on the board. Casey Moore homered in the fourth to tie the game and Josh Hawk hit a two-run shot off of Sam Herzog in the fifth to make it 4-2.

The Hops would cut that lead to one in the sixth on an Emmitt Hampton solo home run.

El Paso would get a huge insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a Gregory two-out RBI single. That ended up being so big because Rodney Millar led off the ninth with a solo home run to left, his second of the game and 43rd on the season. The Hops would then get two runners on with only one out before closer Sam Lopez got Forrest Owen to strikeout and Arturo Mardones to fly out to deep center to end the ball game.

Sam Herzog (10-7) took the loss. He only lasted 4 2/3, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits. He struck out three and walked none. Rookie Russell Fluty pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out three and walked one.

Alfonzo Murillo (7-4) picked up the win for El Paso. He pitched six innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out four. Sam Lopez picked up his 39th save despite giving up a run and getting himself into a jam that he worked out of.

Josh Hawk, with his two RBI in the game, now has 113 on the season, second in the Mountain League.

In the finale, the Hops had no answers for Luis Corella and dropped a 3-1 decision. Corella (11-13) went 6.2 innings, allowing just the one run on four hits while striking out four.

El Paso (74-75) would grab the lead in the third inning on a solo home run from Jorge Mosquera, his 8th on the year, and an RBI single from Shuheii Takahashi. Takahashi would also add a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning for some insurance.

Flagstaff’s only run came on a Rodney Millar solo home run in the seventh. It tied him atop the Mountain League with his 44th on the season.

John Benitez (4-7) would take the loss despite a decent outing. He pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits.

The Hops (77-72) will return home for their final home stand on the season as they will host Salt Lake (69-80) and St George (80-70).

Around the League: Roswell opened up a huge weekend series atop the ML Central with a 6-2 victory over first place Santa Fe. Roswell is without slugger and MVP candidate Blake Pacinelli who is out into late October with a broken arm. Pacinelli is second in the ML in batting average (.321), fifth in home runs (34) and fourth in RBIs (98). Both Long Beach and Las Vegas won in extra innings atop the DL West. The Nuggets beat rival Henderson 8-7 on an Enrique Lima three-run home run after the Silver Knight shad taken a two run lead in the top half of the tenth. The Surf Dawgs defeated Salt River 8-7 as Kyle Carroll homered in the tenth.

Long Beach’s struggles continue as they blew a 3-1 lead late and lost on a walk off home run from Rickey Grant as Salt River rallied for a 4-3 victory. The Surf Dawg loss combined with another Las Vegas victory now leaves Long Beach 3 1/2 games back of the Nuggets. Roswell has now taken the first three games from Santa Fe to take the lead in the ML Central by 1/2 game over the Silver Bullets after a 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Phoenix moved to within a game of first place Surprise as they shutout Goodyear 2-0 behind seven shutout innings from Fletcher Fluty. Meanwhile, Surprise lost 1-0 to Glendale to bunch up the race in the DL Central.

Long Beach defeated Salt River 6-5 and Las Vegas lost 7-6 in extra innings to Henderson to close the gap to just 2 1/2 games in the DL West. Long Beach and Las Vegas will play each other six times in the final 13 games.

Santa Fe scored three times in the top of the ninth to salvage the series finale with Roswell, 5-4. The win moved the Silver Bullets back into first place in the ML Central.

Rodney Millar is once again red-hot and is tied for the ML lead with 44 home runs.

BRAVES REPEAT AS WORLD SERIES CHAMPS!

The World Series trophy is staying in Atlanta as for the second year in a row the Braves defeated the Yankees in five games.

Freddie Freeman and Marcell Ozuna hit back-to-back home runs to start the fifth inning, and light-hitting Kevin Kiermaier capped the inning with a three-run homer to lead the Braves past the Yankees 8-4 in Game 5 of the World Series.

Joc Pederson was named World Series MVP after hitting .500 with three homers and six RBIs over the five games. A curious decision though since Marcell Ozuna homered in all five games en route to batting .409 with five homers and nine RBIs.

After the first two games of the series, the Braves were hitting just .220 as a team over the entire postseason. The Braves raised their team average to .263 after taking all three games at Yankee Stadium.

Games weren't quite as intense as last year. We didn't hit much until those games at Yankee Stadium. But we did hit a lot of homers. The three-peat is going to be a challenge since we're going to lose a fair amount of talent. But looking forward to getting 2023 started.

I've got to figure out what to do with Ozuna. I want to move him, but it doesn't really make sense in context of my franchise. He hit .284 with 40 homers and 105 RBIs this season. And he had a monster playoff and World Series. Still not sure how he didn't win the World Series MVP.

I'v been looking forward to season 3 for a long time. I'm going to have to rely more on youngsters and role players this coming season. It's going to be fun.

I keep telling myself to slow burn through the offseason over Thanksgiving, but I'll probably have it done by the end of the weekend.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

The contracts for Snitker and my farm director (I forget who he was) expired. And I fired my hitting coach since we were near the bottom of the league in batting average. I want to be less reliant on home runs next season. I've made offers to fill all three positions. I'd like to upgrade from Snitker, but hard to justify doing that coming off back-to-back World Series titles, so we made him a pretty generous offer to return. We'll see if he takes it.

When I traded for Berrios, I figured I could re-sign him for around $20M a year. But he's dead set on getting $31M a year. While I've got some money to spend, I can't justify that for a #3 starter, especially while I'm looking to extend my top two guys (Soroka and Fried).

Edit: A couple of other notes. The Dodgers parted ways with Dave Roberts. Pujols retired and went straight into the HOF. Charlie Morton retired as well.
