I’d say it’s more the rise of ‘Ultimate Team’ modes, than lack of competition. We’re at a point now where SDS can excite people by adding some new former players every year, and people will buy for new cards. There’s less motivation than ever to make significant improvements elsewhere. Just put a fresh coat of paint on it sometimes, keep adding cards, and watch the money roll in.

Basically every sports game has gone downhill since gaining a popular UT mode.

People call for competition like the competitor is going to swoop in and go against the huge trend in sports gaming, putting the bulk of their resources where most of us on here would want it, or cause SDS/EA to put their focus back on offline play, but that’s just not the case.

A competitor is going to push their own UT mode just as hard as every other sports game, because that’s what they are financially motivated to do. They might push SDS to try and make DD better to stay ahead, but that’s about it.

After being underwhelmed for a second straight feature preview, I am still very much on the fence here. Like 22, which I decided to buy only after the franchise stream.

Leaning toward the do not buy still as it will take a lot in franchise to get me to buy the game this year. Not sure what to expect. I am curious about their draft changes, but don't want them to be lackluster.

The rule changes and schedule/playoff format change is not enough for me.

I also do not know how I feel about the hitting changes. I want to see a return to how hitting felt in 20, but even 20 has become tiring to me.

I want something to be excited about in the Show. And right now, this is looking to be the first year I don't buy at full price since 2009. If I even buy it at all even on sale.

But I will give them all of the feature premieres to convince me before I decide on a final verdict.

I hate this stretch of pre-release. Because now we likely have to wait 3 weeks for presentation/franchise premiere. Next week is DD and the next week probably would be road to the show.

I am not familiar with DD and all of the cards. But couldn’t they make franchise profitable? I know in NBA 2K the GM options have this tree and you get so many points to unlock a certain feature. Like one was better General manager or negotiator so like you might get a leverage on free agent signings or find trades. Or one direction was like ticket sales. It would be cool if they did something like that.

Totally agree. I hate these modes. To each their own but when one is just concerned with getting people to continuously spend money, clearly that’s all the devs will spend their time on.

We had a good run there after arcade machines faded, and before online/VC took over, where the value for our money was at all time high. But that's over lol.

I never thought I'd see the day I'd be more excited for a golf game and a wrestling game than the Show and full disclosure im not even that overly excited for them either lol

If they could at least bring it to PC I'd be able to live with the deja vu this game brings every year but man oh man I play less and less of this and nothing so far tells me this year will be any different.

I watched the fielding portion and the first two animations were the reach over the wall catch and a second baseman moving to his right and stopping. This game is getting so stale. Im glad some people can enjoy the small updates, but we really have to stop giving these developers a pass.

Agree. If I wasn't on Xbox and have Gamepass I'd keep 21. You PS5 players are getting fleeced . My $70 is going on EA PGA Tour.

This is how you know someone just decided on their talking point one day years ago and never bothered to see if it was actually true.

Of the sports games, The Show is BY FAR the least predatory. They'll gladly take whatever money people want to throw at them, but they release highly-rated cards all year for no cost than maybe an hour or two of playing Moments. Unless you're a weirdo with money to burn, there is really no incentive or push to ever spend extra money in the mode.

It's not an online vs offline thing, it's head-to-head vs solo play and they're prioritizing the head-to-head experience because that's where the players are. It just happens that back in the day that was couch co-op, and now it's 2023 and it's online.

Of course I say this as someone who just plays Franchise and solo DD when I just have a few minutes here and there to play, so what do I know?

Yeah DD has basically no incentive to spend money, it does get annoying seeing that talking point still be so prevalent here. It gets the most attention because that's where the players are. It's unfortunate but its just the reality that the general public prefers UT and online H2H modes, and DD is easily the best of them. I have no problem with it personally, since I do enjoy it myself, I just wish it would stop creeping into other modes like RTTS and MTO and let those modes just be their own thing without tying DD rewards or cards to them.

I don't know that the narrative that the "general public" prefers these modes is entirely accurate. SDS has stated multiple times that RTTS is the most played mode (and that is also true of NBA 2k). What I DO think is accurate is that the large percentage of MLBTS players that interface on the various social media outlets are folks that play DD. Thus, a fair bit of that hype build is geared around the most interactive fan base.

I 100% agree with the bolded. I want them to remove in-game XP entirely from DD (or centralize it strictly to DD) and remove the rewards for other modes. DD should be self-contained to avoid the potential of abuse by players that forces restrictions that negatively impact people who just want to play the other modes.

DD is easily the best Ultimate Team mode out there. I was able to basically grind and get any card I wanted, without spending money. That being said, will probably not pick up 23 and stick to 22. I loved the co-op mode early on last year but having no rewards come from it stopped that. Now, 23 has ranked mode but that's not driving me to pick up 23. I'll just play 22 when I have the itch to play online. Don't feel like grinding basically the same cards all over again.

If they somehow released a co-op franchise, then I would be in, but unlikely.

I don't think p2w is 100% the problem. It's the idea that card collecting, and building these OP teams to beat someone online in order to have "fun," needs to be a part of any sports game ever. It's an addictive element that has nothing to do with the sport or gameplay. It's dumb as ****.

Isn't this just another take on fantasy drafts though? I haven't done one in probably 20 years but I remember being younger and loading up some unrealistic OP team, hitting tons of HRs, and winning World Series just for the hell of it.

The addictive part of this would be winning, right? And it's more often against another person because they usually give more of a challenge/are less predictable than CPU. But again I say this as someone who just plays the CPU in sports games, so my perspective is skewed.

Have they mentioned if the new Ohtani rule is in the game? Where he can both DH and pitch and remain in the game when he is taken out of the game?

Of course we all want better graphics and player models (even those who are too "high and mighty" to want better graphics in a *gasp* videogame).

But even I knew better than that with the soft rollout to current gen and going multi-platform at the same time. You can forget about graphics and player models this generation. That ship sailed, especially with no competition for a SIM baseball game.

But my main issue is user control when fielding (and running the bases). I want TOTAL control. I don't want to just watch animations play out while I get sucked into pre-canned animations that lead to quick-time button press prompts for throwing. But we'll see how it feels soon enough.
