Re: MLB The Show 23 Impressions (Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5)

This game feels very polished this year. I’m enjoying the new sounds and thank God they addressed the base running. Played one game online and was hitting balls dead center on the pci and only hit one HR. I’m seeing a ton of hit variations which is great. My only complaint is the graphics. During the presentation the graphics has a lot of jaggies and almost low resolution. This game feels a lot smoother than last year’s. I hope they focus on giving us some next gen graphics next year. The grass still looks like ps3 grass and at this point this shouldn’t be this bad.

      2. The fans need an upgrade, not only graphically because they stand out like a sore thumb, but they also need more variety. It is like they have same 4 or 5 people, with 3 of them literally sitting right next to or close to each other. It is like you are looking at twins and triplets everywhere.

      3. Not a fan of Negro Leagues being stuck behind a story mode. I have zero interest in story modes in sports games. Should just allowed them to be played in exhibition.

      4. Not a fan of WBC being in diamond dynasty mode only either. That is another mode I have zero interest in playing.

      5. Hair models look weird on some players, this has always been a thing with this series I noticed.

So you have 2 things that is basically the highlight of the new game to grab casuals attention to this years game stuck behind modes that a casual will have no desire to play. That would have been like FIFA putting World Cup available in ultimate team only. I just don't understand that logic.

Other then that, MLB The Show 23 is MLB The Show. Mindless fun to me. Graphically I can't really tell the difference between this and the last 4 or 5 games. Game look good, but yet it don't have that next gen look about it like the other sports games do. Hell even WWE 2K23 have a next gen look about it.

To me if they fix the hair models, the grass color, dirt color and the fans, it would improve the game greatly graphically. Also they need to change up the back ground stuff. Like it is always the same birds and number of birds flying in the same direction in the sky behind the pitcher. Same style and color of airplane landing. Commentary while improved, still feels disconnected with what is actually happening.

Got it on Game Pass, so it fills my casual baseball fan needs. Now if you paying $70 for it, unless you are a diehard baseball fan, I wouldn't recommend full price. Especially if you own 22, 21 or 20. Honestly you can say that about all sports games, none of them really warrant a full price yearly buy unless that is your favorite sport. I'm still waiting for MLB The Show to give me that next gen feel, so far it still haven't.

I think the biggest problem with the grass is it looks extremely fake and like carpet. The game looks sharp in 4K but the textures are low resolution as well. When you use strike zone 2 hitting view you can easily notice by looking at the players’s arms. Like you mentioned the fans look really bad. Gameplay wise it’s the best in a long time but visually looks no different than the last 4-5 mlb the show games.

After a handful of innings this morning before work my initial reactions is: This doesn't look next gen. LOL yeah I knew it wouldn't but having not played '22 and this being third year on next gen consoles, I expected a bit more. To me, it doesn't look like a $70 next gen title. Maybe it's time for these games to quit supporting old tech or make two completely different games.

I do really like the regional sports networks, the presentation and the UI changes from '21. Of course commentary is still a step back from '21. I'm sure it's better then '22 but as I said never played it. Do love the negro league story mode. Would have liked to seen those teams be able to be used in exhibition mode though.

For example if the count came up 2-1, it would only add 2 pitches to your pitch count. If it came up 3-2, it would only add 4 pitches, etc.. just to keep pitch counts down/more realistic.

But now it's just adding every pitch to the count - ie. if it comes up 3-2, it's adding 5 pitches to your pitch count.
This is correct. Idk if it's a bug or something they "fixed" but really broke? Hopefully, it will be a bug and they can patch it. I like playing every pitch but after a while you've heard and seen everything. Been using QC since it was introduced, and imo the best feature they've ever added, even over y2y saves. If this is how it's supposed to be now then every pitch is what I'll do.

Anyone else not seeing enough homeruns by the cpu? Too many singles, with at least 75%+ of all hard hit balls being a hard hit single or a line out? The ball just doesn't have any lift for cpu hitting. User hitting is perfectly fine however.

I'm seeing a lot of jaggy text if it's on a red background on my PS5, like in the score bug. There's a chance it could just be my TV settings, but I've never seen anything like this before with any other content on the TV.

Enjoying the changes to commentary this year.

Nice to hear Boog talk about how a player has done lately while he's up to bat.

My first positive impression is this is definitely the best bat sounds we’ve gotten. I think they did a much better job matching the loudness of the sound to how hard or soft you hit the ball.

Visually, there’s a couple things holding this game back A LOT, and that’s shadows and grass/dirt.

Grass just genuinely looks awful and there isn’t a better way to put it. Some grass looks straight neon green. The other issue with both grass and dirt is the contrast in colors compared to light dirt/dark dirt and the way the grass is cut. In real life, grass patterns are obviously noticeable from up high but they shouldn’t look so polarizingly opposite from the light grass to the dark. It makes everything look painted on.

My other issue is shadows. I think they use shadows as a crutch to trick us in to thinking there’s more detail in the players than there actually is. It’s not that the shadows are wrong, it’s that they’re incredibly too dark. Give me shadows but don’t make them practically pitch black.

This franchise is so disappointing now. It's very far behind every other sports franchise. It's like they only care about the presentation of the game more than the actual gameplay.

Makes no sense that a game like Madden can render 22 high quality assets that look great at once but The Show can't render like 2-4 comparable assets we can see at a time.

Just watching the players move feels old. RTTS is so garbage. They're still using that whack narrator. I think they've been using the same voice they've always used since the inception of the mode lol.

Once you get pass the Negro Leagues, the game doesn't have much else new to offer. No idea how people can still gladly pay full price for this game.

Another thing to add, this game desperately needs new animations for in between pitches. We’ve been watching the same “batter adjusts helmet and shrugs shoulders” and “pitcher adjusting cap and adjusting shoulders” animations for about 12 years now.

Maybe this was already known, but it seems like the true two-way player logic didn’t make its way into RTTS. When I pitch, I’m not DHing.

I am sincerely hoping it is patched/fixed. I don't have enough time to play video games to spend 45 to 60 minutes on each game.. and the quick counts (the way it was in previous versions) is the best way I can end up getting realistic pitch counts/walk totals ...

But yeah playing it as they have it now, it's really not optimal having everyone reach 90 to 100 pitches by the 4th or 5th inning.

I am really enjoying The Show 23. This is my first year playing on XBSX (Gamepass) instead of PS5. The game is so polished. I played on veteran the past few years but I am getting smoked now, but I am having fun and adjusting. Started a quick franchise with the Braves and playing spring training. An underrated plus for me is the soundtrack. NBA2Ks soundtrack is an aggravating ADHD fueled mess that I mute. The Show just flows smooth and easy. That's great for me as I see myself playing a lot this year.
