Cardinals drop series to Angels as pitching staff knocked around

The Cardinals (3-3) dropped two games of a three game series with the Angels in St.Louis to begin the week. The Cardinals won on Monday night, but then were outscored 21-3 over the final two games of the series.

The Cardinals pitching staff gave up 21 runs on 26 hits including 9 homeruns over the final two games alone while recording just 9 strikeouts over 18 innings. The worst part is that if was the starting pitching staff that took on the bulk of the beatdown. Gordon Graceffo and Sonny Gray both were knocked out before the 4th inning of their respective starts and combined to give up 16 of the 21 runs over the two games.

One brightspot was Nolan Gorman who continues is swinging a hot bat as he recorded 6 hits over the series including a homerun and 2 doubles.

The Cardinals are on the road for their first road trip of the season as they head to Boston for three with the Red Sox before travelling to Pittsburgh for 3 against the Pirates at PNC Park.

      Cardinals take series in Boston

The Cardinals (5-4) took 2 games of their 3 game series with the Red Sox in Boston over the weekend. The Cardinals have started a trend to open the season where they win a series, lose a series, and then win a series again. Great if you want to play .500 baseball all season.

The Cardinals won the first two games much like the Twins series, but was unable to finish the sweep on Sunday. Erick Fedde was great once again on the mound as he threw 7 innings of 1 run and 5 hit baseball on Friday night. Fedde was helped out by Alec Burleson who collected 3 hits and 3 RBIs which included a two run homerun in the 2nd inning over the Green Monster, that may or may not have been helped by the wind. Burleson also drove home a run in the 6th that put the Cards up 4-1, which would be the final score.

Saturday was a crazy game that featured 11 combined walks and 6 combined homeruns by the two teams as the Cardinals won 8-6 thanks in part to Masyn Winn's grand slam in the 7th which put the Cardinals up 8-5. Ryan Helsley would save the game with a near immaculate inning (10 pitches) as Alex Bregmann fouled off an 0-2 pitch to break up the possibility.

Sunday was Steven Matz on the mound and he was good, but only lasted 5 innings and got little help from the bats as the Cardinals fell 3-2, and again missed out on a sweep by not winning on Sunday. Sunday also featured a scary moment when Nolan Arenado left the game after diving back to 2nd base on a mis-read ball. He would be called out that killed momentum, but he also left the game with a forearm injury.

The Cardinals will now travel to Pittsburgh for their first divisional opponent of the season as they face the Pirates in a 3 game weekend series. Graceffo, Gray, and Fedde are the expected starters.

Nolan Arenado to the 10 Day IL

The Cardinals have placed 3B Nolan Arenado on the 10 Day IL with a forearm strain. Arenado was injured Sunday attempting to dive back to 2nd base in the 4th inning against the Red Sox. The Cardinals, who are without Willson Contreras as well, have recalled 1B Luken Baker from Memphis to fill the vacant roster position. Its likely Baker will man first base and either Brendan Donovan or Nolan Gorman (likely) will man the hot corner for the next week or so.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

        DETROIT TIGERS 2025 SEASON PREVIEW

The Tigers got off to a slow start in 2024,leading to them selling off pieces such as pitchers Jack Flaherty, Andrew Chafin, and hitters Mark Canha, and Carson Kelly. The Tigers were 55-63 on August 10th. Eight games under .500, ten games back in the Wild Card. Their season was all but over.

Then, someone let the Tigers get hot.

The Tigers rode "pitching chaos" to a 31-13 over their final 44 games, and made the playoffs as a Wild Card team. They then swept the Astros in the Wild Card round, before losing to the Guardians 3-2 in the Divisional Series.

Now, entering the 2025 season, expectations are pretty high. The Tigers expect to contend for the A.L. Central division crown. The Tigers brought in Gleyber Torres to play second, shifting Colt Keith to first base. They also brought back Jack Flanerty on a 2 year contract. They made a run at free agent 3B Alex Bregman, but he ultimately decided to sign with the Red Sox. The Tigers also brought in reliever Tommy Kahnle to help shore up the bullpen. Within the division, in the offseason, the Twins pretty much stood pat, with the Royals improving, and the Guardians seemingly regressing. The White Sox remain a dumpster fire.

        STARTING PITCHING
For much of last season, including the playoffs, the Tigers relied on one starting pitcher, then "pitching chaos" in the other games. But, that one starting pitcher, Tarik Skubal, just might be the best pitcher on the planet. Skubal made 31 starts, leading the league in wins (18), Strikeouts (228) and ERA (2.39), and won the Cy Young award.

This year should be a little different though. The Tigers brought back Jack Flaherty in free agency, after dealing him to the eventual World Series winning Dodgers at the trade deadline. After struggling in 2023, Flaherty rebounded well last season, going 13-7 with a 3.17 ERA in 28 starts between the Tigers and Dodgers. Reese Olson went 4-8, but pitched much better than his record, pitching to a 3.53 ERA in 112.1 innings.

Casey Mize had a stellar spring training, to earn a spot in the rotation. Mize, a former #1 overall pick, has struggled since returning form Tommy John surgery, but he showed an uptick in velocity this spring.

In a bit of a surprise, Kenta Maeda was named the fifth starter, over Jackson Jobe. Maeda struggled in his first season as a Tiger, pitching to a 6.09 ERA in 112.1 innings. Maeda is owed $12 million on the last year of his deal, and could be a candidate for release should he struggle.

Jobe doesn't figure to be in the minors for too long. The thinking appears to be to have him pitch a bit more at Toledo, and work on his curve ball, then bring him up when a spot in the rotation opens up, which it surely will.

        CATCHERS
Jake Rogers returns as the primary catcher. Rogers is a great pitch framer, and a pretty good defensive catcher. His offense took a bit of a step back last season, dropping from 21 HR in 2023, to 10 in 2024. In a bit of a surprise, the Tigers opted to send down Dillon Dingler, who served as the backup catcher last year after Carson Kelly was dealt at the deadline. Instead, the Tigers kept non-roster invitee Kyle Dutcher, to serve as the back up catcher. The Tigers rave about Dutcher's bat, saying the ball just jumps off his bat, and he works the count as well as anyone in camp.

        INFIELD
Early in the offseason, the Tigers signed Gleyber Torres, to play 2B, and announced that Colt Keith would move from second, to first base. Torres hit .257, with 15 HR and 63 RBI with the Yankees last season. Keith overcame early struggles, to finish with a .260/.309/.380 slashline.

The left side of the infield has a lot of questions. The Tigers made a run at Alex Bregman, but missed out on him. Jace Jung was expected to win the starting 3B job, but he struggled in Spring Training, and was optioned back to Toledo. Matt Vierling, who was also expected to get a lot of games at third, will begin the season on the I.L. The Tigers will likely utilize a platoon at third, with Zach McKinstry, and Andy Ibanez seeing time there, as well as Kyle Dutcher.

Moving Keith to first base seemingly pushed Spencer Torkelson out of a job. But, he had what was easily his best spring training of his career, and made the team. He'll likely DH against left handed pitchers, and when Kerry Carpenter starts in the outfield.

        OUTFIELD
Parker Meadows will get most of the playing time in Center. Meadows is an outstanding defensive center fielder. And, after returning from the minors (and recovering from an injury) Meadows bat caught fire. His offensive numbers weren't eye popping, but he was a huge catalyst in the Tigers late run to the post season.

Riley Greene will get most of the games in Left. Green was the only Tiger to hit more than 20 home runs, finishing with 24. He was an All Star for the first time in his career. The aforementioned Vierling was expected to get a lot of starts in RF, and he will once he comes off the I.L., but in the mean time, Kerry Carpenter (when he isn't DHing), Wenceel Perez, and Zach McKinstry expect to see time out there.

        COACHING/FRONT OFFICE
Manager A.J. Hinch got a lot of consideration for Manager of the year, though it eventually went to Cleveland's Stephen Vogt. Hinch does a masterful job of putting players in the right situations to succeed. And he always seems to push the right buttons.

The pursuit of Bregman seems to indicate that the Tiger ownership might be willing to open the wallet a little more than in the past few years. This could bode well if the team is in contention near the trade deadline, as money constraints might not hinder the type of acquisition that could put them over the top.

New looks Stros disappoint in home opener

The Houston Astros lost several key players in the 2024-2025 offseason. The list everyone knows of Ryan Pressly, Justin Verlander, Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman send the reigning division champs into 2025 with a lot of uncertainty. New additions of Christian Walker, Isaac Paredes, Brendon Rodgers and possibly Cam Smith look to fill the voids but can they?. Add the fact that Jose Altuve is trying out left field and you certainly have a new looking team in Houston for 2025.

Their first series of the year went about as you could expect as a star studded New York Mets team came into town.

The Mets got to Framber Valdez early first, in the second inning when singles by Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo led to Lindor scoring the first runs scored in the newly named Daikin Park. The Mets got two more in the 3rd inning behind RBI's from Juan Soto and Mark Vientos.

The Astros answered back as they scored two of their own in the 4th inning as the middle of their lineup, Yordan Alvarez, Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes teamed up to make the score 3-2. After that, Kodai Senga settled in and shut the Astros scoring down for the remainder of his outing (6.0 innings/7 H/2 R/0 BB/7 SO. Framber pitched into the seventh but gave up another run before he was pulled with the score at 4-2. He had a final line of 7.0 IP/9 H/4 R/1 BB/6 SO.

Luis Garcia pitched the eighth and allowed three runs to bring the final deficit to 7-2.

Sean Manaea was great for the Mets in game two as they were even more dominate despite the final score of 10-6. He held the Astros hitters hitless through four innings before they got their first hit when Christian Walker hit a single down the third baseline. At that point however, it was already 8-0 after the Mets completely shelled Hunter Brown who lasted just 3.2 innings and really, that was too long.

The Astros did manage to avoid the sweep as they won game three 7-2 behind a strong showing by Ronel Blanco (6.0 IP/8 H/3 R/0 BB/7 SO).

There is still a lot to learn about where Houston will be at the end of the 2025 season. Next, they will welcome Justin Verlander and the San Francisco Giants (1-2) to town. Verlander is not a projected starter for the series as he pitched San Fran's last game, a 6-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

Ughh Antonio Senzatela, they dropped him far too low, at 59. Especially given the such extremely small sample size of statistics he's provided the last two years. Instead of lowering his main attributes, they should have lowered his Durability rating by half. Looking at his IRL spring training, I'd say he's better than he was three years ago, not worse.

Cardinals drop series to Pirates in Pittsburgh and fall back to .500

The Cardinals (6-6) dropped the series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates to begin the week. The Cardinals are now back at .500 and are currently last in the NL Central.

Gordon Graceffo got the ball to begin the series, and once again proved ineffective on the mound as the Pirates lit him up for 6 runs on 10 hits in 4 innings. The bullpen kept the Buccos scoreless the rest of the way, but the offense could only put up a single run and fell 6-1.

Tuesday night it was Sonny Gray seeking his first win of the season and it appeared he was on his way after leaving after 7 innings with a 5-2 lead. Unfortunately, Andre Pallante was unable to get a single out and gave up 4 runs to blow the win for Gray and ultimately the game as the Cards fell 7-5.

Wednesday afternoon it was Erick Fedde back on the mound seeking his 3rd win of the year. Fedde would go 7 innings allowing a run on just 4 hits with 5 strikeouts as the bats put up 7 runs, led by Alec Burleson and his 4 RBI afternoon, for the 7-1 win and avoiding the sweep.

The Cardinals are off on Thursday as they return to home to face the Phillies for a 3 game weekend series.

Mets open the season with 6 on the road and finish 3-3

The Mets kicked off the campaign in interesting fashion after a spring training that saw David Peterson and Tylor Megill sent to the minors to start the season.

The Mets first stop was 3 games in Houston. The First game saw a pitchers duel between Senga and Valdez. It was 1-1 till the 8th when Jose Siri and Lindor both hit long balls and the Mets took game 1. Game two the Mets had a lead mid way through the game despite a rocky first inning from Manea. However with a 2 run lead the bullpen gave up 9 runs over the last 4 innings for an 11-6 loss. The final game saw Clay Holmes throwing lights out over 6 innings and the Bats came alive including 4 homeruns, including Juan Soto first as a Met and they win the series with a 7-1 win.

The final trip on the 6 game road trip to open the season saw the Mets head to Miami to face the division opponent Marlins. The first game of the series looked like the Mets left the bats in Houston as Marlins pitcher Valente Bellozo threw a complete game shutout allowing only 4 hits and a Marlins 2-0 win. The Mets got even in game 2 as Paul Blackburn was solid through 5. McNeil, Siri and Soto all went deep and the Mets got even with a 7-3 win. The rubber match saw the Mets bullpen again blow a lead late. After the Mets jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the top of the 7th the bullpen once again imploded. Brazoban, and Minter game up 4 runs, Stanek gave up another two in the 8th and the Mets lose the game 8-6 and the series and end the road trip 3-3.

So far McNeil, Soto have been very good, Siri has been the MVP of the 6 games. he is 11 for 18 with 3 homeruns and 7 rbis and 2 stolen bases.

The Mets bullpen has been a nuclear bomb

Next up the Mets head home for the home opener and 6 against the Blue Jays and Marlins.

Disappointing opening weekend in San Diego as the teams split a 4 game series. The Padres ended up getting shut out by Chris Sale in the home opener 1-0 when the Braves scored a on botched ground ball to 1B Luis Arraez that could have been an inning ending double play however Arraez misplayed it and was only able to get the out at first. Game 2 saw a different store where Dylan Cease pitched extraordinary to the tune of 6 IP, 1R, 12K's. The Padres got out to a 4-1 lead however unable to keep it as they gave up 5 answered. The Padres were able to tie it however lost in the 10th inning 6-5. San Diego had a chance to tie it however Xander Bogaerts was thrown out at home plate trying to tag up to end the game.

Padres were able to bounce back in Game 3 by winning 4-2 following an 8 inning start by Yu Darvish who gave up 2 ER while striking out 7. Manny Machado hit his first Home Run of the year in the win. In Game 4 San Diego got their revenge pounding ATL 9-0. Luis Arraez and Xander Bogaerts lead the way going 3-5 with 3 RBI and 2-4 4 RBI Respectively.

Jackson Merrill is struggling to start his sophomore season as he's 0-15 so far through 4 games with 2 RBI via sac flys.

Next up is 3 home games vs The Cleveland Guardians.

Cubs win series against Dbacks and A's

After the 0-2 start the Cubs win back to back series and are 5-4. Kyle Tucker has been as good as advertised with 5HR and 13RBI. Carson Kelly and Justin Turner have been very effective at the plate early on as well.

Pitching has been an issue out of the gate. Steele has been roughed up in 2 starts and Imanaga hasnt been that great either. The back end of the bullpen has been solid and we are hitting our way to wins!

Up next is a 6 game homestand first up is the Padres followed by Texas.

Start of the Road to The Show for 4 guys!

                          Larry Walker – 6’3 – 235 - RF
                          Potential B – 54 overall

After a strong showing at the High School Senior Day and Playoffs, Walker impressed a lot of scouts at the combine. Even if he committed to the Cal State Fullerton University, Walker went into the draft not looking to get to college.

With the 16th pick in the second round of the 2025 draft, the Colorado Rockies made Walker a happy guy. The Pride of Maple Ridge, B.C. will start his career with the Yard Goats, looking to improve on his skills. A B potential, he will start his career with Hartford in AA.

                          Rickey Henderson – 5’10 – 180 – LF
                          Potential B – 52 overall

Upon receiving offers from some college, Rickey was up to himself: “Rickey won’t go to college, you know. Rickey’s too big for college, Rickey’s already in The Show, people are just not aware of it!”

Then went the draft where the Athletics drafted him 28th in the second round. While asked what he was thinking about the fact he would play in Sacramento if called up in the major, Rickey had that smile: “Ricky doesn’t think there should be an if in your question, Ricky will play in Sacramento!”

                          Frank Thomas – 6’5 – 240 – 1B
                          Potential A – 54 overall

While playing at the Chase Field for the first time in the combine, he belted two HR’s over 460 yards. Jaws dropped and you couldn’t ear a sound in that stadium, except silence. “It was empty, there’s the reason you didn’t heard anything!” said Thomas with a little grin.

Drafted by the Cincinnati Reds 2nd in the 1st round, Thomas was asked what he would do, decision wise. “I don’t think I’m up to the task yet for AA, so I’ll have to think about what’s best for me. I need to work on many aspects of my game to make it to the big league.” He then committed to the Tennessee Volunteers where he will do that for the next 3 years.

                          Kirby Puckett – 5’8 – 184 – CF
                          Potential A – 52 overall

One scout said that he was doing everything right and he was the perfect teammate. Puckett just did it all throughout the State Championship and the combine. He was drafted in the second round by the Los Angeles Angels, he was emotional before entering the big stage.

Looking to continue being the best he can be, Puckett was humble when saying he was going to Vanderbilt. “I will take everything that this college can give me, and I hope that I can make them proud of giving me that scholarship.”

                          Next in line :
                          2B - Ryne Sandberg
                          SS - Ozzie Smith
                          RF - Ichiro Suzuki
                          3B - Cal Ripken Jr.

                            New save, new me!

I present to you: The 2025 Seattle Mariners

                            Rotation
                            1. George Kirby
                            2. Luis Castillo
                            3. Logan Gilbert
                            4. Bryan Woo
                            5. Bryce Miller

The key piece of the whole club probably. When you look how young 4 of the 5 are you can assume that this won't change too quickly. It will be very interesting to see if one of them can challenge Skubal for the Cy Young this season, there should be multiple candidates in that clubhouse.

                            Lineup
                            1. Victor Robles
                            2. Julio Rodriguez
                            3. Cal Raleigh
                            4. Randy Arozarena
                            5. Luke Raley
                            6. Donovan Solano (playing 3rd every day)
                            7. Rowdy Tellez (DH, alternating with Dylan Moore)
                            8. Jorge Polanco
                            9. J.P. Crawford

I know we like to talk about how bad the offense of the Mariners is, but honestly there is a lot of potential. J-Rod and Cal Raleigh are probably the best hitters in their position. Robles had a great bounce back season last year, if he continues that he is a very good leadoff guy. Arozarena already showed it at the highest level.
If even one of Polanco or Crawford can bounce back from their injury plagued season the offense should have enough weapons to win a lot of games with that pitching staff behind them. Plus many of them are very good defenders for their positions as well.

                            Series Recap: The Athletics
                            Game 1: W 6-2
                            Game 2: W 6-2
                            Game 3: L 1-2
                            Game 4: W 11-1

The Pink Gorilla Games high performer of the series: Julio Rodriguez: 7 hits, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 4 stolen bases

It was a very strong performance across the board. The outlier in game 3 was a weird one, because the offense was there but commited quite a few mistakes on the baserunning department. 2 Mariners were tagged at the homeplate alone, Julio and Raley were caught stealing. The As needed extra innings as well to steal the game from the Mariners.

Of the pitchers George Kirby was the biggest standout with 12Ks in 6.1 innings pitched.

Very strong start, but let's see if the offense is still there with the Tigers coming up, who should make it a lot tougher.

Pink Gorilla high performer? Is this a you thing or is this something in the presentation package?

Re: MLB The Show 25 Franchise Discussion

The Marlins finished the month of April with a 15-16 record 4 games back of the division leading Phillies. The month has gone better than expected with the offense providing enough to keep the team in games as well as the starting rotation. The bullpen definitely has been the weakest spot but hopefully recent call ups will fix that.

Some bright spots in the lineup:
                                Griffin Conine .324 5 HR 23 RBI
                                Jesus Sanchez .337 4 HR 14 RBI
                                Jonah Bride .314 4 HR 17 RBI
Derek Hill .353 2 HR 9 RBI - Mainly hitting against lefties

Some bright spots in the rotation/bullpen:
                                Sandy Alcantara 2-3 2.23 ERA
                                Ryan Weathers 4-1 2.76 ERA
                                George Soriano 2-0 17 IP 1.04 ERA
                                Andrew Nardi 1-0 19 IP 0.95 ERA

Guys that need to step up:
                                Connor Norby .223 4 HR 15 RBI
                                Calvin Faucher 1-2 11 IP 5.56 ERA

                                Injuries:
Liam Hicks broken hand 60 day
Xavier Edwards Fractured wrist 60 day

                                Transactions:
Graham Pauley called up from Triple A
Declan Cronin was optioned and Ronny Henriquez was called up
Joe Mack was called up from Triple A
Optioned Janson Junk and called up Xzavion Curry

Going forward we'll see if the team starts to fade.
