Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

Well, the franchise progress thread is dead and gone and I just had a terrific game in my O's franchise.

I'm playing at Kansas City in the 2nd weekend in May, my(mostly me) team is pretty bad. But I've go Uehara going against Greinke. It is a classic pitchers duel. Greinke threw 5.1 inning of no hit ball, Koji was just as strong. Koji came out after 6.1 innings giving up three hits, and Albers finished the 7th. Greinke went 7 innings only allowing 1 hit. In the 8th I bring in my only lefty (Not including the closer) He haddles the top of their line-up

Well the game goes into extras. I manage to get runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 10th and Kyle Farnsworth comes in with 1 out and Adam Jones up, he gases Adam and Nick Markakis. Brian Roberts comes up in the 11th. (he is batting 7th because he is hitting .197 on the year) Well he takes Farnsworth deep on a 3-1 fastball. I bring in George Sherill to lock it down and after giving up a double he manages to strike out 2 and gets a soft grounder to Roberts to end it.

It was one of the more fun games that I've played. I was frustrated that I couldn't get to Grienke, but Uehara was just as strong. It was one of the few games that my bullpen gave me quality innings and I got a timely hit from a struggling Roberts who despite hitting under .200 hit his 7th HR in 37 games. Too bad I'm only 14-23 at that point.

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions

I am sick and tired of the first basemen in RTTS going way too far into the hole and fielding balls the second baseman is supposed to get and then firing the ball to me on the mound. I barely have time to register that I might need to cover first base before the ball is thrown to me. The first basemen need to stay closer to the bag and let the second basemen get those balls. I'm also getting tired of balls being hit to 2nd and Short and having the infielder run to his cutoff position before he even attempts to make a play on the grounder. Oh and one more thing...cant any third basemen dive and make a play down the line anymore??

Another thing that needs to be addressed are how many good players end up on the Red Sox and Yankees and the other East Coast teams. I swear no matter if I'm using my RTTS pitcher or my hitter... the Red Sox end up with Pujols, Youkilis, and Ortiz at first and three other stud outfielders. The "lesser" teams need to re-sign their stud players more often and not let them go to the higher payroll teams. My third baseman was traded to the Orioles and while they arent a great team, they do have some good parts to work with...until Nick Markakis left to play for the Royals and the Orioles replaced him with Chad Tracy. The front office logic for RTTS is bad.

        Too cool....
Indians (me) vs. Rays. We're tied at 1-1, bottom of the sixth. Two men on, one out. Up comes Crawford. The catcher signals to intentionally walk him to load em up. Then, there's a meeting on the mound. All done by the cpu, not me!
Next pitch, Lee throws a knucklecurve and gets the DP groundout to end the inning. Never had I seen the CPU "take over" and call a play like that!

Oh, I ended up winning the game on a walkoff by Garko, 3-2 final.

Its really hard to hit... my first game I struck out like 15 times... How do you hit in this game? I have a really hard time hitting even a 4 seam down the middle? any suggestions
After not posting here since I guess 2014, I found that my signature had an old slider set for FIFA 15... super awkward...

Raise some of the hitting sliders, and lower the Pitch Speed slider. That helped me out a lot.

Man, the Yankees kill me in franchise mode. I'm in the midst of the May series at Yankee stadium. I've faced CC, Chen and AJ every time I play them! I've managed to go 1-5 against me. I am currently losing to CC again 5-0 in a game in which I had been holding my own so far, but the wheels came off in the 4th. I'm having fun, but damn do the Yanks have a 4th and 5th starter? When this series is done I will have seen thier 1-3 starters 9 times in 9 games.

My only win was a 2-1 walk-off victory beating Mo Rivera.

Re: MLB 09: The Show - Impressions, DUMB AI ?

sometimes i just dont get it. it seems like the AI takes a day off here and there.

i was beating the CPU by 3 runs. so i bring in my closer in the top of the 9th. i throw a first pitch fastball on the outer half of the plate and the CPU swings and pops it up. next batter swings and grounds out on the first pitch to him. i couldnt believe that down by 3 runs the CPU would swing on the first pitch. so on the next batter, i throw a changeup right down the middle, and he swings at it. is that crazy to you? it is to me.

ill tell you, i know we all love this game more than 2k's game but, inside edge is something that should be brought over to this game because its logic is really dim-witted.

its true that if the CPU had comeback and beaten me that id be upset about it, but thats happened before so, i wouldnt complain about it.

Happened to me to, I was up 5-1, top of the ninth, and the Rays go down 1-2-3, all first pitch swings.(Groundout, popup, groundout, respectfully)

I'm not complaining though. I figure the CPU gets "desperate" in those situations. I'd rather have that than the comebacks...

i agree with you but, what im saying is that there is no way in hell that, even if the first 2 guys swing at the first pitch, theres no chance at all that the 3rd guy would. id bet your life on it. XD

                        ^^^^Whatever.
I've yet to see any dust at all. I'm usually concentrating on the pitcher's release.

In real life, I'm not looking at the ground, I'm looking at the pitcher. You may wanna try that.

                        Otherwise, bye.

This has now happened numerous times where the game turns against me late in the game and my team can't even make simple throws

I'm playing the Dodgers...it's 3-2 me...top of the 9th, kemp leads off..i strike him out with lidge, then manny is up...get him to ground out to second on a 2-2 pitch, then I have a good battle with ethier...he doubles to right center, fine that happens.

james loney steps to the plate, man on second, 2 out, 1-2 count to loney I get him to ground easily to second base, ballgame should be over...but no, chase utley...decides he is going to try and back hand the ball even though it's only a foot to his right...and then proceeds to over throw howard's head by 10 feet into the stands...so the dodgers have no tied the game...the very next batter..***ssell martin, grounds to the right of howard, with loney on second....howard dives, makes the play...proceeds to stand up...and throw the ball over lidge's head from not even 10 feet away from the base and into the stands

now, i understand things happen in baseball, but this is atleast the third time in my franchise that absurd throwing errors have completely cost me a game in the ninth inning, and I needed to vent somewhere or it was going to cost me a controller

I had to turn the throwing errors down. They were a little excessive I thought. On top of that, there seems to be only one type of bad throw and that is always six feet over the head of the first baseman. I have yet to see a throw that takes the fielder off the bag or any variation of throwing error one might see in a real game. The flip side to this is that I have yet to see a first baseman fail to dig a bad throw out of the dirt. Gaming the system, I usually will throw on the run since it makes the throw low rather than high and let the gold glove first basemen scoop it up.

The off line throws happen when you throw on the run. Keep trying to "game the system", and you will see a lot of them.

I think if you turn up fielding Errors you see the balls in the dirt getting away from the first baseman. There aren't enough regular fielding errors for the Human, but with the Cubs, I had 2 balls in the dirt get passed my 1b in the same game. I see it about once every 5 to 10 games.
