Re: Someone Please Save This Game For Me
No, I wasn't using groupie to say they were backing SCEA, I was just joking around with them for talking about the red shirts for so long. Re-read the posts, and note the winkI have tremendous respect for SCEA and this game. It is the best sports game ever made in my opinion. Plus, I don't think there is CPU comeback and believe Brian that it doesn't exist. I respect the differing opinions about this, but I don't personally see comeback AI or faulty game programming.

Re: Someone Please Save This Game For Me
Just played the same game on the schedule 3 times in a row: Yankees (me) @ Marlins (6/21/09 - Father's Day!)...
1st game (Difficulty: All-Star, CPU Comeback: OFF) - I'm up 4-1 in the 8th inning, bring in Veras to start the 8th (I pinch hit for the pitcher in the top of the inning and made sure Veras was properly warmed up). I quickly get 1 out followed by 3 consecutive hits and an error (2 runs in, 2 on), I then bring in Marte (fully warm) who immediately gives up a 3 run HR (on a pitch purposely thrown off the plate). Marlins take the lead 6-4. Heart of my line-up comes up in the 9th, none of which can seem to hit fast balls down the middle beyond the pitchers mound. Ok that's pretty unlikely, but it can happen I guess. After the game, I don't save anything, exit all the way out of the game to the PS3 desktop. Then I re-started The Show and set up the exact same game on the schedule, except this time I knock it down to Veteran...
2nd game (Difficulty: Veteran, CPU Comeback: OFF) - I'm up 2-0 in the 9th (Burnett pitched a gem through 7 2/3, Ramirez got the last out in the 8th). I bring in Mariano to close the game (fully rested and fully warm). He gets the first batter to pop out and then A-Rod overthrows 1st base on a routine grounder (for the second time in the game) to start the madness. Mariano suddenly can't find the strike zone at all and if it even comes near it, it's smashed for a hit. a walk and 3 consecutive hits later, I'm down 3-2 which ends up being the final score. Once again I exit the game without saving anything & re-start it to play the exact same game for a 3rd time. I decide to stay with Veteran...
3rd game (Difficulty: Veteran, CPU Comeback: OFF) - I have a 8th inning rally to overcome a 2-0 deficit and I'm up 3-2 going into the bottom of the inning. I have Bruney & Marte warmed up so I can use a little righty/lefty strategy as I try and set it up for Mo to come on in the 9th. I get 2 quick outs and have 2 strikes on the 3rd hitter. Looks good right?...wrong, amazingly on a tapper back to the mound Marte throws the ball away and allows the hitter to reach (what a phenomenal stroke of bad luck). Next hitter I throw the ball way down out of the zone to try to get him to chase, but as if by magic he is able to golf this ball at his shoe tops for a 435 foot HR. Wow what a surprise, the CPU takes the lead once again.
I understand that in baseball anything can happen on any given day, but there is a point where this stuff just starts to become a little absurd. I laugh when I read people say that a problem doesn't exist, and it's all a figment of some people's imaginations. If that were true, I find it extremely curious as to why this never seemed to be an issue of discussion in past versions of the game, why would so many people (I know, not all) start imagining this all of a sudden? This is the first year that when I am playing, I can immediately tell when the AI "surge" is about to happen, no matter what I throw and no matter who's pitching. In reality this might happen a handful of times in a whole season, I am not exaggerating when I say that I've had well over 20 bazaar games like this already with 09. Yes there are rare times I can eek out of it, but more often than not (and much more often than should be), it becomes a ridiculous barrage that destroys an otherwise fantastic game up until that point. That is where the frustration comes in, it's like this game is a near masterpiece simulation of the MLB most of the time and then something just goes haywire which detracts tremendously from the overall experience.
I am not a newbie to The Show and certainly not to the game of baseball, nor am I immature and feel angry because I can't always win. I have been playing baseball video games for a very long time. I've owned nearly every damn one of them going back to the Atari 2600 (1982 I think). I have been a fan & student of the game since well before that. I played the sport (for real) in organized leagues for over a decade. I am VERY confident that I can tell when it's just me doing things wrong "baseball wise", or if things seem off "program wise". I've played enough games this year (approx 60) to see that something is definitely not right. Frankly, it doesn't make a bit of difference to me whether people agree with me or not. You can sit here and show me statistics & technical specs and formulas on random events forever, none of that can compare to over 70+ hours of playing the game. Believe me, I want desperately to enjoy this game. I did spend $60 on it, plus a good chunk of the last month of my life. Unfortunately, I am at the point where I'm not enjoying it very much at all this year, and certainly not nearly the amount that I did the last couple of years. I am happy that some of you guys are enjoying it, I guess I am just looking for something to save the game for me this year as well.
OK, rant over. Come on and beat up on me now if you wish, after playing this game so much these past few weeks, lord knows I'm used to it.dead on how I feel as I also restarted games to test what going on with the AI pretty much with your same results.
Once again this isnt a shot at SCEA team its just what I also had happening game in and out reguardless of what anyone saysComment

Retirement has its perks but im not embaressed to say I play 10 hours a day .
But my eyesare fried the last week time for a rest .
Maybe this is just a case of when SCEA keeping it too real went wrong ?Last edited by dorismary; 03-31-2009, 11:23 PM.Comment

Dunno. A mod said they were hacked and others think someone jumped the gun on an April fools joke. maybe it's both...lol
BTW, they also changed the little line under your name as well to either "I paid th be pink", or "I didn't pay to be pink."
I think it's hilarious (but I'm admittedly easily amused)

I have two big problems with this years game.
1. I can't tell what kind of pitch is being thrown. I've changed cameras and adjusted pitch speeds... nothing seems to work. This is a very important thing in a baseball game.
2. Pitcher confidence doesn't work against the CPU. They seem to be able to paint the corners with surgeon-like precision with runners on base. And when the manager is able to make several mound visits when they're in a jam, and I have to change my pitcher on the second, that's just unfair.
This game does so many things right, but the things that it does wrong are killing it for me.Last edited by dubplate; 04-01-2009, 12:47 AM.Comment

Re: Someone Please Save This Game For Me
Same old song and dance!! Some of us seeing amazing comebacks some of us completely backing SCEA and not seeing a thing. I am trying to buy Brian's flat out laugh at the thought something might be there. One guy used the term groupie towards those that are backing SCEA. I disagree with that because I think the term groupie stands for a bunch of people who are stupidly in love with some natural quick talent like the jonas bros. However in this case these people have put out a product that takes so much understanding of the game and hard work that most of us drool over the details that make baseball great, and it blindfolds us slightly. SO I think its more of a respect issue that these so called groupies have for what theyve put out. Do I agree or disagree at this point? I have to agree with the developers because of their knowledge of the game and respect i have for them but my 120 plus games played so far say no way somethings wrong. Maybe 120 games isnt enough who knows? There has been teams who have great seasons that are not all that good.Comment

Re: Someone Please Save This Game For Me
On this board there are threads of people talking about how close they got to a no hitter. Compared to that, the three blown leads you described are a much more common streak and should actually happen several times a season for many teams. The game would be broken if this didn't come up.
If we're talking long streaks, if it's not one team in real life it's going to be another. Periodically, you can easily have multiple teams with losing streaks even with no teams having a winning streak. And vice versa. I wouldn't put too much into what happens in one week.
By definition, another person may see the very opposite steak in a few games, and even more people will repeatedly see both. I've played thousands of games and have seen a simple streak like this repeatedly, as well as the exact opposite. In a twist of irony, preventing these natural streaks from happening would be the very nature of comeback code!
Based on these 3 games and your experience, do you feel that if you played 3 or even 6 more games the same blown leads would continue happening repeatedly? Do you feel you can't get blowouts because of a flaw in the game, and that blowout streaks aren't possible? How about for other people? I don't get a sense that you think there's necessarily comeback code, and these examples are easy to test.
Real life teams have lost a dozen games more under less likely and far more ironic circumstances. What matters is all the thousands of other games we'd have to ignore to see this. No newspaper is going to print the thousands of non-streaks that happened, and no one's going to discuss it.
Regarding streaks, several great teams have even failed to win championships for decades, and in real life they will even blame ghosts. Assuming ghosts and their red shirt cousins aren't really responsible, people would still invent them anyways! This answers your question on imagination and why so many people have these theories. If they didn't, this wouldn't be baseball. It wouldn't be fun.
Millions of people have referenced specific curses and ghosts in books, articles, and tv for decades. That's more than the number of posts ever made to this board. So is this because of the strong influence ghosts have on baseball, or rather the importance of imagination and color in baseball?
For anyone reading this, if you're convinced there is definitely hidden comeback code or don't want to hear about whether or not it literally exists, please stop reading right here. Baseball is about statistical mysteries, and there's no need to spoil that.
For those of you still reading, the answer is there is no such hidden comeback code. This is a simple matter of fact, because it either exists or it doesn't. It's one thing to run scientific tests on a chest to determine what's inside, it's another to open it up and look. Both methods when done correctly yield the same result - there is no hidden comeback code.
Some people want to know this, and those are the only people I'm writing this for so please don't take offense at having an answer. I don't want to spoil the mystery for anyone else, but on the other hand there's been some confusion for those want to know. I apologize if you read this by skipping the warning two paragraphs ago, I'm only trying to give an answer for a few people asking.
We all know there's always going to be threads on streaks in baseball. After all, the most unlikely thing in baseball is for nothing unlikely to happen!) in just around 30 appearances? We're not talking about a rookie or a scrub here, this is one of the best closers the game has ever seen, this is just flat out unrealistic. I know you will question my pitch selection & playing ability or the hitters I'm facing, and I don't know how to prove it, but I assure you this is not the problem. I don't mind losing at all when it feels like I should have, or even the occasional late inning upset. When it feels like real baseball it's almost as fun as winning, but when "the ghosts" take over and the game starts playing more like pinball than baseball, well that's not much fun at all. I don't know what else to say, I know that this is like trying to get you acknowledge faults in your own child (or perhaps you can look at it as a super human strength instead), but I'm just telling it like I see it, as a long time supporter & big fan of this little tyke.

Re: Someone Please Save This Game For Me
You mentioned Brian not wanting to say anything wrong about his baby, but can you look "in the mirror" and criticize your own play?
I'm honestly not trying to be an arse here, so don't take me that way, but this reminds me of a lot of the logic that goes into conspiracy theories.
I just finished a normal 5-3 ball game. I didn't have any weird comeback, nor did the Twins. I play at the All Star level, no slider adjustments. I play with the Cubs or Red Sox usually in both Franchise and Exhibition. There are comebacks sometimes as there should be. I just don't see anything unusual. I will keep playing and remain open minded, but I'm just not seeing it.
I really think many of you need to learn how to manage your pitchers better, know their strengths and weaknesses as well as the opposing batter, and think about whether you are doing any patterns.
I have found I get pounded by the CPU when I fall into patterns both on offense and defense. For instance if I always take the first pitch, they start throwing more strikes on the first pitch. If I am always throwing fastballs on my first pitch they start to sit on that. I love how the CPU "thinks" more in this game. I have found mixing it up helps a lot.Comment

Re: Someone Please Save This Game For Me
With all due respect Brian (which is tons), I fully understand the concept of streaks in baseball and the likeliness of the unlikely. The problem is that in this year's game it appears that the "unusual" has BECOME the "usual". I have been playing The Show for 4 adaptations thus far, and of course these types of things would happen once in a while, but never with anywhere near the frequency I have experienced in MLB '09. I'm not just talking about a single week or only 3 games, rather it's more like 20 times that amount. Did the previous year's versions of The Show not work by applying these same principles? I am not saying that there is necessarily "comeback AI" at work, but it does appear that the AI might be a little unrealistically "skilled" at times, even at the lower difficulties (sure, it's supposed to be brutal on Legend & HOF, but not on Veteran). How is it that I have played as the Yankees in this game since MLB '06 at higher difficulty settings, and in all those hundreds & hundreds of games I would estimate that Mariano Rivera would get a dozen blown saves at the most throughout a season (sometimes maybe half that), and this year at a lower difficulty, he already has 10 BS (<-appropriate abbreviation there) in just around 30 appearances? We're not talking about a rookie or a scrub here, this is one of the best closers the game has ever seen, this is just flat out unrealistic. I know you will question my pitch selection & playing ability or the hitters I'm facing, and I don't know how to prove it, but I assure you this is not the problem. I don't mind losing at all when it feels like I should have, or even the occasional late inning unexpected upset.
If you're not pitching well with Mariano Rivera, it's because you're not pitching well with Mariano Rivera. If you pitched better with Rivera in previous games, it means you pitched better with Rivera in previous games. We could start a new discussion about that instead. There's probably an explanation and it might be hard to figure out, but I can easily say it is not comeback code.
If comeback code was why you kept losing games with Rivera, nobody else would be able to close with Rivera or any other closer. Blown saves is like RBIs in that your teammates have a lot of say in what you get, it's a record of achievement and but a weak statistical measure. This is the same reason why a 2.50 ERA legendary starter can have a 11-10 record more than halfway into the season. This kind of real life inconsistency isn't because of a jinx. For Rivera being on the Yankees also helps his blown saves stat in real life, but not if in the game you're not getting real life Yankee offense.
About Rivera, if you think something unnatural is happening other than you're not pitching well enough, what are you seeing? Is he throwing impossible to hit pitches and the hitters are hitting it anyways, or are the pitches not landing where they're supposed to be?Last edited by Brian SCEA; 04-01-2009, 02:42 AM.Comment

Re: Someone Please Save This Game For Me
I just have to figure there are a lot more people NOT seeing any comeback AI....but as it usually goes, the negative is what you hear most because people want to vent/rant. The majority of the people are simply enjoying the game.
I've done my fair share of testing, and I don't buy it that it's reversed or broken or whatever.
And as I've said 100 times before, it's refreshing not leading the league in every offensive and pitching category. I think most people are used to jumping right in and succeeding. I mean, the first time I played 2k9, I had 22 hits and 12 runs () .
Hitting .278 and averaging 4.5 runs per game sounds about right actually, lol. Look at the run differentials per game, winning 4-2 is pretty normal.
I find joy in having to work for my runs and having to work for every pitch. Sure it gets frustrating sometimes, but I'm sure the CPU is equally frustrated whenever I comeback on himComment

Re: Someone Please Save This Game For Me
With all due respect Magoo, how do you know this is not the problem? I understand how you guys feel this way, I do, but I think you guys are just seeing what you want to see. There has become this herd mentality about all of this.
You mentioned Brian not wanting to say anything wrong about his baby, but can you look "in the mirror" and criticize your own play?
I'm honestly not trying to be an arse here, so don't take me that way, but this reminds me of a lot of the logic that goes into conspiracy theories.

If I am always throwing fastballs on my first pitch they start to sit on that. I love how the CPU "thinks" more in this game. I have found mixing it up helps a lot.
because if Pitch selection is his problem, he should be getting shelled on a REGULAR basis, whether it be via comebacks or just blowouts from the get-go.
I guarantee you magoo will say that if the game is close he pitches fine but as soon as he gets the lead the cpu will hit differently. Because that's the problem that A lot of people have seen.
2nd bolded part:
This comeback thing is not in ANY way complaining about the difficulty of the game. It's about the natural feeling. I had a 9-5 record with the phillies in my first season with comeback OFF, so I won , but not one of my wins came with a blowout. not one, and I also did tests where I saved a game at 3-0 played maybe 30 times using Hamels against the Pirates. In 90 percent of my games, I was able to extend the lead to over 4 runs , but as soon as that happens Hamels gets shelled in the next inning to get the score close.
But if the score was close to begin with, I cruised along with Hamels. In 30 plus games playing from the 4th inning and on ( after saving at 3-0) I managed to win by more than 4 runs ONCE and that was because I got 3 run home run top of 9th and they scored 2 runs bottom of 9th and had a bases loaded threat agaisnt Lidge)
I played agaisnt the pirates worst starting pitcher so I could test these games and get leads. But again, in 30 plus games I won by more than 4 runs ONCE, and all those games felt the same mostly, I extended the lead and once that happens, eventually the cpu will crawl back.
Maybe it's not 'comeback code' but it's a ratings boost code, well i guess that's the only way you can implement comeback code right... What I mean by this is when you play the Padres team.
Score 0:0 - you're playing against the worst team in mlb 09.
Score 3:0- you're playing against San Diego's all great's team.
Score 6:0- you're playing against Cooperstown's Mantle and Ruth.
this is what I feel, and I have played this game religiously for 4 years now and I have NEVER felt like this before. I understand there are comebacks, blowouts, streaks and what not, but like magoo said, the FREQUENCY of it all is just problematic.
I respect the hell out of this team because they have provided us with the best product and also a great communication avenue, but when there is a problem that's being experienced by many and I mean MANY loyal and objective customers, I think there is something there.Comment
