Re: MLB 11 "Road To The Show" thread

So I made it into the All-Star Game as the starting center fielder.
Now end of July leading the league in hits, batting average and tied with Brett Gardner for lead in stolen bases with 47. Yeah, I still have a higher OBP than anyone else in the top 5 and still have the fewest attempts of all of them, but at least the game is keeping up with this stupid quota thing and letting my guy lead. As usual in every single year in all 3 of my RttS games, Ellsbury and Crawford in Boston are top 2 in Gold Glove for outfielders regardless of fielding percentage, assists or putouts or anything else. Funny how that keeps happening. Not sure how I can win a Gold Glove. Anybody know what the game takes into account for this?

it doesn't show up on your calendar but if you hit play next appearance you should get a pop up for the Futures game if you are a starter you'll see the starting lineup, if you come in from the bullpen or pinch hit you should see the same pop up for those... only other explanation I can think of why you didn't play in the game is that the coach never put you in, or if you made the team but didn't save your franchise and then when you played again you didn't make it

RTTS: Your pitchers pitches

Those of you playing as a pitcher, what do you throw and which do you find to be most effective?

Currently my RHP throws:

Fastball - Tops out at 98, usually in the 95-98 range.
Cut Fastball - Tops out at 96, 93-96.
Sinker - Tops out at 94, 91-93
Slider - Hit 90, mostly 87-89
Change-up - Hits 87, ranges from 83-87

The change-up has been a pretty effective strikeout pitch, and I only recently adapted the slider (dropped the sweeping curve). They've all been decent strikeout pitches actually.

I'm thinking of dropping my sinker for a 2-seamer, any thoughts on this? Anyone have a preference? My only issue with the sinker (which is at about 97) is that it is getting pretty close in velocity to my change-up (which is at 84 or so) and I figure the 2-seamer would be as hard as the cutter.

1st Year Stats: .278 3 HR 36 RBI's in AA

2nd Year so Far: .386 4 HR 40 RBI's so far in AAA..

Not sure if the stats are correct but it's pretty close to that.. Gotta get my Power up, not sure why I'm not hitting any HR's.

Finished up my first year in the majors, my second in RTTS. I won Rookie of the Year with a 11-4 record. I was out of the running but a strong September gave me a good finish.I progressed to a MLB Ace role, and the Reds ofeered me a 7 year deal after the season at 3.9 million a year. I negotiated down to 4 years, but the Reds wouldn't give me the 3 year deal I wanted. I eventually let them contract renew; I can get better terms next year.

Re: MLB 11 "Road To The Show" thread

So, here's the comparison of my two RTTS guys that have finished their first season. Allen is a righty batting 3B/LF for the Braves, stayed in AA the whole season, starting at 3B from about mid-May or so through the season and usually was batting cleanup. Ryan is a switch-hitting SS/IF for the Astros, called up to AAA in late July, was officially "backup", but played pretty much every day since he was the only SS primary on the roster. He batted leadoff most of the time he was in the lineup.

First, how they did:

Allen
Code:
.207/.222/.309, 376 AB in 96 games, 21 R, 42 RBI, 17 2B, 7 HR, 8 BB, 114 K, 87 assists, 47 putouts, 13 errors (.912 fielding)
Ryan
AA -
Code:
.265/.281/.332, 328 AB in 75 games, 23 R, 25 RBI, 10 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR, 2 SB, 17 CS, 6 BB, 77 K, 162 assists, 66 putouts, 25 errors (.901 fielding)
AAA -
Code:
.272/.284/.335, 224 AB in 51 games, 14 R, 27 RBI, 6 2B, 4 3B, 0 HR, 10 SB, 7 CS, 4 BB, 50 K, 124 assists, 75 putouts, 5 errors (.975 fielding)
AAA playoffs
Code:
.362/.362/.532, 47 AB in 10 games, 5 R, 9 RBI, 4 2B, 2 3B, 0 HR, 3 SB, 1 CS, 0 BB, 11 K, 28 assists, 5 putouts, 1 error (.971 fielding)
The AAA playoffs numbers are included in the AAA totals as well.

And then their final ratings (interesting for comparison):

CvL: Allen 51, Ryan 51
CvR: Allen 41, Ryan 55
PvL: Allen 52, Ryan 37
PvR: Allen 46, Ryan 40
Clutch: Allen 47, Ryan 42
Bunt: Allen 0, Ryan 35
DBunt: Allen 0, Ryan 31
Vision: Allen 50, Ryan 43
Disc: Allen 52, Ryan 43
Dur: Allen 61, Ryan 59
Spd: Allen 45, Ryan 67
BR Abl: Allen 39, Ryan 52
BR Agg: Allen 17, Ryan 33
Arm: Allen 50, Ryan 45
Acc: Allen 41, Ryan 44
Fld: Allen 42, Ryan 57
Reac: Allen 52, Ryan 56

I did not spend any money on stat increases, and I'm curious whether these stats are anywhere similar to any of your position players after your first year.

As you can see, I had a lot of trouble trying to draw walks. I think I need to move up to A-S batting, just to get some pitching that is willing to walk me. And it took me about a half-season to figure out stealing on Ryan (and to raise his attributes to a point where he was successful).

Ryan has a contract for AAA starter for 2012 and Allen is a AAA backup for 2012. And now I think I will spend money on each, to raise Ryan's speed and Allen's contact & power.

Re: RTTS: Your pitchers pitches

If it matters, my pitcher is half way through first season and is a starting pitcher.

4seam (94-97)
Splitter (86-89)
Slider (82-85)
Circle Change (85-88)

I am a left handed pitcher so for Right Handed batters I typically try to pick up an early 2 strikes by painting corners with 4seam. Once I have 2 strikes on right handes I like to go Circle Change low and away as it breaks away from the batter, splitter in the dirt or high fastball in on the hands and out of the strike zone.

For lefties, the same applies for the most part accept I usually throw slider low and away as my strikeout pitch as it sweeps outside of zone and below the knees on a righty.

I am considering picking up a fifth pitch but not sure what to grab. Was thinking 2 seam or cut fast ball.

I also have a Closing Pitcher in RTTS. He has 3 pitches 100+ 4seam, Slider and Regular Changeup. Paint corners and blow it past batters then slider changeup for strikeout.

Re: RTTS: Your pitchers pitches

I'm a RHP Starting Pitcher who features:

Two Seam Fastball - 85-89 MPH
Circle Change - 77-79 MPH
Cutter - 83-87 MPH

I wanted to develop a pitcher who could cover both sides of the plate. For instance, the two-seam fastball and circle change have identical flight patterns (down and in on righties), which I use to neutralize right-handed batters. The cutter, on the other hand, is used to jam lefties or at least get them thinking I'm going inside wit hthe hard stuff and beat them on a changeup dipping away.

So far it has worked well, I'm about a fourth of the way through the season with the Reading Phillies and have cracked the starting rotation. I'm 3-0 (1-0 when I've started) with a 2.93 ERA and 24 K in 30 innings.

Anyone have a suggestion of which pitch I should select for my fourth? I want to get my 2SFB up to around 94, so maybe another hard biting pitch like a slider, even though I already feature a cutter? Or should I go with something on the slow side like a curveball? I really want my circle change to be my strikeout pitch though...

I like having the slider. It's good against RHB and if they don't chase it, it sets up something hard and in pretty well. Had the sweeping curve prior to that, but really didn't think it was that effective. I often left in hanging and had trouble controlling it, plus batters didn't seem to chase it too often.

My lefty SP uses a 4-seam, slider, circle-change, and 2-seam (and will likely add a cutter or splitter). I heavily use the circle-change vs RHB and slider vs LHB, but will mix in the opposite on occasion (for sliders vs RHB either burying them inside or going outside for backdoor - do NOT miss with this towards the middle of the plate, even if you keep it low).

My righty CP uses a 4-seam, slider, and 2-seam. He'll probably add a splitter or straight change, or possibly a cutter (since it's the popular thing, and dang effective).

And I want to try a fastball/curve guy, just see if the Doc Gooden/Kerry Woods style can still be effective. Oswalt is another fastball/curve guy, although he's got a good slider and change as well.
