Bautista's season could have potentially been a flash in the pan since he hadn't done anything prior to that and he was aging, Verlander had been a consistent mid to high 3 ERA guy with 170+ K since he came up.
There was that one Romero-esque year.

OK, I'll try a different comp.... How about Zack Grienke? (I'll spoiler this time)

What do you think I could get for Wright? I'm interested in sending him to KC, since they're close to contending and Wright would be a great veteran presence for them. Any chance I could get Moustakas/Myers and someone else (maybe a young B or C arm) for David?

Wright's stats are: .315 BA, 23 HR, 97 RBI, 14 SB, 4 Errors (Golden Glove Winner)

I recently signed him to a 5 year deal (club option for 6th) worth around 16.5 million per year.
I'm a huge fan of Wright, but I don't think KC would want him... their main focus is pitching and they like Moose.

If he's signed he's that much more valuable... I think the Angels would be a good fit, but they don't have enough to give you... what about Atlanta? They've said that they would take a 3B/OF to replace Chipper, they don't care about where they play Prado.

No, no, I'm open to a lot of stuff.... EDIT: WOW that sounded impeccably awkward.

OK, I have an idea that hasn't been used in MONTHS....

35, want to go to the arb thread?

If you go there, I'd be little to no help lol. One, I'm so tired I'm gonna pass out any second now. Two, while I wouldn't pull the trigger on a Verlander deal (or on the other scenario you pointed out either, I'm a sell-high GM...not sell low in a contract year and pray lol) I can see it happening if it was a GM not named 35. IMO, Nicolino would probably have to be included for Detroit to really think about it because JJ is a major downstep from Verlander and other the other prospects/players being included in the deal wouldn't make me jump out of my shoes and deal my ace.

There's a difference though... the Royals aren't a perennial playoff contender. Verlander was very good, sometimes great, every year he's been in the bigs, aside from '08. I feel like the Tigers would want to test things out with Verlander to raise his value or keep him for the playoffs. What if he responds next season like he did in '09? Why are the Tigers in a rush to sell him at his lowest value when he could turn things around? They could get an even better package from someone desperate for SP at the deadline...
It's not like he's 35 and it's not really known if he will ever have a good season again. Verlander has been a good/great consistent starter for most of his career so wouldn't you think the GM would assume he would turn things around and try to get a higher value for him?

He's at the tail end of his prime, man, 31 is getting up there.

They're not in a rush, if you look at my offer, I just blew them away IMO.

The trades you have been offering are fair. It's just the realism of it that I don't see matching up. I think that is where 35 is coming from too.

I figure that it'd be realistic if they were blown away, though.

31 isn't too bad for a pitcher. Look at Roy Halladay's numbers after he turned 31.

Pitchers also tend to have lengthier careers, especially ones with superior command.

Chris Carpenter? Roy Oswalt? Those are just current ones I can think of... there are plenty in past seasons that pitched well in their mid-late 30's.

You could definitely put Verlander in the same conversation as those pitchers. Maybe not after the seasons he had in your franchise, but a pitcher can still have plenty of life after 31. (especially when they are as consistent as Verlander)

It's aside from the point. Just saying it would be much more realistic for the Tigers to wait until the deadline. Playoff contention, very likely to turn it around, very likely to get higher value, could find a team desperate for SP and get an even better deal.... ect..
