    Re: Community Day 2013 - Gameplay - Questions/Concerns/Inquiries

Speeding up infielder throwing animations in certain situations is a must. When there is a runner on 2nd, and the batter bunts or hit a weak grounder, you throw the runner out at first but the first basemen no matter how early you preload the throw to home will always get stuck in the after putout animation and never throw with urgency when the runner should NEVER score from second on a bunt or simple grounder. First basemen animation/logic needs to bet better, this has been an issue for years.

Second thing is the PCI. It is called the plate coverage indicator for a reason. If the PCI never even remotely touches where the ball is pitched, the bat should never contact the ball. Center swingers shouldnt be rewarded because the PCI doesnt work like its supposed to.

It actually does work the way it's supposed to. A lot of people get this confused a little. The PCI placement affects your player's ability to get a hit depending on their contact ratings and plate coverage ratings.

      It's not a true 1:1 bat placement.

For example, if you move it UP and the pitch is LOW, and you are using a Miguel Cabrera or Mike Trout (for example), you will most likely still make contact. Of course, your chances of getting a hit are lower though.

Likewise, if you do the same thing with an Adam Dunn, your chances of swinging and missing are much higher and your PCI placement is much more critical.

Personally I like the way it's set up. It's like a dice roll.

When a pitch is thrown, lots of variables play into your ability to get a hit. Timing, Difficulty Level, Player Ratings and Attributes, Game Sliders, Pitcher Ratings and Attribute (including Confidence), hot/cold zones, type of pitch thrown. PCI placement is just one of those factors. Aim well, your chances are better to work in your favor. Sometimes, you can have a pitch in your hot zone, time it perfectly, place the PCI square on, and still get an out. Other times, you can totally mess it up but bloop one through.

Just think of it as a dice roll and a game of statistics. The more things in yuor rfavor, the better chances you have of a successful result.

So whats the point of making the PCI itself smaller or larger based on player skill and rating? That alone should should be enough. A great hitter like Cabrera or a great contact hitter like Jeter should have bigger PCIs, and they do, which should allow them to make more contact. That should be enough.

When you put an inicator on screen (or in analysis box) and it directly related to PLATE COVERAGE, no matter who the hitter is if his plate coverage is nowhere near the pitched ball, should be no contact. If people fond hitting hard, its supposed to be, in fact its the single hardest thing to do in all of sports. That said, there is already a "timing only" mode for those that laxk the skill to use actual bat placement.

Because by making it smaller/bigger, it makes it harder/easier to place the PCI to square the ball solidly.

It's a "Place Coverage Indicator". Not "this represents the barrel of the bat" (which would be miniscule on your screen). It's still ratings driven. You just now have the ability to sway the ratings in your favor or to the pitcher's favor. Simple as that.

Timing Only still uses the PCI. The CPU just does it for you (which is still ratings based).

Dead center of each batters PCI should be the barrel of the bat. When the pitch is a foot away from any part.of the PCI, no contact should be made. Just the way i feel. PCI size is already determined by player ratings, user skill and bat placement should be as important if not more. Otherwise we arent playing the game, cpu stats just play out without considering user skill or play.

But User skill and bat placement are important...they sway the statistics. If you're constantly missing the PCI, you will not get consistently great results.

Anyway...I agree that they should add a more true system like you are talking about. I'm just trying to explain how the PCI works. It's not they way you want it, but it does work the way it was intended to.

Hopefully we get another option in the future.

Judging from the pre-release demo, players getting thrown out at 1st has been solved. That one ball of Gardiner's bat was absolute magic.

Don't know if they'll add this for '13 but for '14 I'd love to be able to manually argue over calls with my manager. There's something about making your manager get booted on occasion in the reg. season that adds realism.

Have they fixed the issue with the 1st baseman covering 2nd base on doubles?

I'm actually glad the whole PCI system works the way it does, instead of some direct, proportionate, "the bat goes here" system. Aside from the immense difficulty, there's also the fact that the analog stick isn't particularly made for pinpointing exact coordinates on your screen. What if the pitch was 2 inches below the center of the zone, 1 inch to the right, and breaking away? What on earth would you do with your analog stick if you had to position the bat perfectly?

I don't know about you, but I have some pretty big hands. If I was supposed to have analog angles and tilts down to the centimeter just to play the game, I'd quit on the first day.

When the PS Move is improved so that it controls your swing location and angle in real time (ie: the player swings how you swing), then I'd be fine with some sort of 1-for-1 system where an indicator represented the actual bat, and no behind the scenes interference existed. But ONLY in some sort of live-swing system would that ever work, imo.

(Of course hypothetically it would also work with a visual touch screen or something crazy like that. Anything that allows us to immediately input an exact location to swing, rather than trying to adapt to the admittedly ridiculous conversion between a small, circular analog stick and a large, square strike zone.)

I'd also like to see the elimination of outfielders going from a slow jog into warp-speed to catch a fly ball.

Outfielder depth also needs to be looked at. I've mentioned it before but the outfielders play too shallow, especially against power hitters.

correct me if im wrong, but on double cuts isnt the first baseman supposed to trail the runner and cover second base?

For the most part yes, depends who is on base and where the ball is hit. Here is a good breakdown on the setups:

What is a double cut, and proper baseball positioning for double cuts and relay plays. Includes diagrams for various situations.

Interesting... When I play 1B the general rule I use/was taught is to trail the batter if he has a chance for a triple, to backdoor him at 2nd in case he changes his mind halfway through.

It's not an "issue." That's the correct double cut assignment for the 1B.

Will we have option to "call for ball" this year? So when two players are running towards the ball, we can call off the CPU player, instead of having both a CPU and user controlled player standing there, not knowing which one will actually catch it.
